'This is a shameless decision': Uddhav Thackeray moves India SC over 'real Shiv Sena' verdict

Acharya Satyendra Das, the chief priest at Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya, reacted to Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray’s remarks that he has not been invited to the consecration ceremony of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya saying the invitations have been extended only to the “devotees of Lord Ram”.

"Invitations are only extended to those who are devotees of Lord Ram. It is totally wrong to say that the BJP is fighting in the name of Lord Ram, our PM is respected everywhere. He has done immense work under his tenure. This is not politics. This is his devotion," the chief priest of Ram Temple said.

The consecration ceremony of Ayodhya's Ram Mandir will be held over seven days, starting on January 16 according to temple officials. On the final day, January 22, after the morning puja, the deity of Ram Lalla will be consecrated in 'Mrigashira Nakshatra' in the afternoon.

The chief priest’s reaction came in response to Uddhav Thackeray’s allegations on the BJP-ruled central government that the saffron party is ‘politicising’ the consecration ceremony of Lord Ram ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. The Shiv Sena UBT chief said that the inauguration function shouldn't be politicised or centred upon a certain party.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut, was also criticised by Acharya Satyendra Das for his derogatory remark that “BJP is now left to announce Lord Ram as their candidate”.

“Sanjay Raut has so much pain that even he can’t express that, they were the ones who used to fight elections in the name of Lord Ram. Those who believed in Lord Ram are in power, what nonsense is he talking about? He is insulting Lord Ram,” the priest said.

In the middle of the continuing dispute over the extension of invitations for the January 22 opening ceremony of the Ayodhya Ram Temple, Thackeray asserted that he was not sent an invitation. However, he said that he does not need an invitation to visit the temple and can go to Ayodhya anytime he wants.

Uddhav Thackeray: Speaker must decide on disqualification of 16 MLAs soon

Eknath Shinde has been sworn in as the Western Indian State's new Chief Minister. The swearing-in comes after days of political turmoil in Maharashtra. Just yesterday, Uddhav Thackeray stepped down from the Chief Minister's post, this was after the country's Supreme Court refused to stay the floor test.

Relief for Shinde, Lessons for Uddhav: What next in Maharashtra post SC verdict?

Supreme Court of India on Thursday (May 11) refused to grant relief to the Uddhav Thackeray camp in the former Shiv Sena chief’s battle against Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of the western Indian state of Maharashtra. Shinde, once a prominent figure in Shiv Sena under Uddhav Thackeray, revolted against him last year. He found support from a large number of Shiv Sena's Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs). Thackeray subsequently resigned and Shinde became chief minister with the support of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has already ruled that the Shinde faction can use the name Shiv Sena and the famous 'bow and arrow' symbol of the party.

"Relief could have been provided if he [Thackeray] had not resigned and faced the floor test. Governor should not have called for the trust vote but because Uddhav Thackeray resigned, Governor was justified in calling Eknath Shinde in forming the government," said Supreme Court on Thursday.

In a unanimous verdict on a batch of pleas related to the political crisis that led to the fall of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government led by Thackeray following a revolt by the Eknath Shinde faction, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and comprising Justices MR Shah, Krishna Murari, Hima Kohli and PS Narasimha said that it could not quash the resignation tendered by Thackeray.

It made clear that had Thackeray not resigned, the Supreme Court could have reinstated him but the court can't quash a resignation.

The Supreme Court on March 17 had reserved its verdict. The bench noted that the petitioners argued for restoring the status quo ante, however, Thackeray did not face the floor test.

Former Maharashtra governor erred, says Supreme Court

The top court held that the Maharashtra Governor erred in concluding that Uddhav Thackeray had lost the majority in the House.

The bench said the lack of security to MLAs (Eknath Shinde faction) is not a reason to conclude that a government has fallen and it was nothing, but an extraneous reason to be relied upon by the Governor.

The top court said the Governor had no objective material to doubt the confidence of the Maha Vikas Aghadi government and to call for a floor test.

The bench noted that Devendra Fadanvis and independent MLAs also didn't move a no confidence motion and the Governor's exercise of discretion was not in accordance with the law.

The bench said neither the Constitution nor the law empowers the Governor to enter the political arena and play a role either in inter-party or intra-party disputes.

The apex court also referred the 2016 Nabam Rebia verdict by a five-judge constitution bench, which relates to the power of speaker on disqualification of MLAs, to a larger bench of seven judges.

The court pronounced its judgment on the political crisis in Maharashtra in connection with the rebellion by Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde and other MLAs, leading to the fall of Maha Vikas Aghadi government led by Uddhav Thackeray.

Maharashtra crisis: Uddhav Thackeray resigned as CM, cannot reinstate him, says Supreme Court

On Saturday, Tamil cinema's superstar Rajinikanth met former Maharashtra chief minister and Shiv Sena leader Uddhav Thackeray along with his family at his Mumbai residence Matoshree. Uddhav's son Aditya Thackeray shared a picture of their supposedly "apolitical meet" with Rajinikanth on Instagram.

He captioned the photo, "An absolute delight to have Rajnikantji at Matoshri once again." The photo featuring Uddhav with his wife Reshmi, and his two sons Aditya and Tejas shows Thalaiva being welcomed by a bouquet of flowers.

Sources say that this was a completely "apolitical meet". And, that Rajinikanth shares a cordial relationship with Uddhav and his family. Since Rajinikanth is in Mumbai for some work commitments, he decided to pay a courtesy visit to Matoshree before leaving the city.

In a huge blow to former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has ruled that Eknath Shinde faction would be now known as the party 'Shiv Sena'. The Election Commission on Friday recognised the Eknath Shinde-led faction as the real Shiv Sena and ordered allocation of the 'bow and arrow' poll symbol to it. In a 78-page order on the protracted battle for control of the organisation, the Commission allowed the Uddhav Thackeray faction to keep the "flaming torch" poll symbol allocated to it till the completion of the assembly bypolls in the state.
Sheetal Mhatre, the spokesperson of the Shinde faction, took to Twitter to share her happiness. शिवसेना जिंदाबाद.. हिंदुहृदयसम्राट शिवसेनाप्रमुख बाळासाहेब ठाकरे साहेबांचा विजय असो शिवसेना आणि धनुष्यबाण दोन्ही मिळाले 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 — sheetal mhatre (@sheetalmhatre1) February 17, 2023 × The tweet in Marathi roughly translates to 'Glory to Shiv Sena, Glory to Balasaheb Thackeray. We got Shiv Sena as well as the bow and arrow symbol'. Sanjay Raut, an Uddhav Thackeray faction leader and Member of Parliament, however, levelled the allegation that the 'script' of handing over Shiv Sena to Eknath Shinde had been ready and that corruption and bribery played a large part in what had happened. — Sanjay Raut (@rautsanjay61) February 17, 2023 × The Shiv Sena (UBT) leader further said that the Election Commission of India's decision to recognise the Eknath Shinde faction as the real Shiv Sena was a "murder of democracy" and added that his party will "go to the people". Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy CM of Maharashtra and BJP leader, took to Twitter as well to congratulate Shinde. (With inputs from agencies)

Big blow to Uddhav Thackeray: Eknath Shinde faction is real 'Shiv Sena', rules election commission

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray fired several party leaders on Monday for anti-party activities, including senior Shiv Sena leader Anandrao Vithoba Adsul and former Maharashtra minister Ramdas Kadam. This comes as the battle between the top leaders of the party continues to determine its direction. However, the current state chief minister, Eknath Shinde, who has asserted that his group is the "genuine" Shiv Sena, chose both of the leaders without delay.

Vijay Shivtare, a former state minister, was expelled from the party on Saturday, and Thackeray cited anti-party conduct as the reason. While CM Shinde has been re-appointing ousted MLAs and leaders to their previous positions, Thackeray has continued his recent wave of dismissals.

Notably, the Supreme Court will hear a number of applications from both sides on the disqualification of MLAs on Wednesday, July 20.Ramdas Kadam quit on Monday, saying he had been "insulted" repeatedly when Thackeray was chief minister, dealing a blow to the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena.

Kadam submitted his resignation as "Shiv Sena leader" in a letter to Thackeray, the organization's leader. The 2019 post-election collaboration between the Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Congress, which Kadam claimed was a violation of the ideas of late Sena founder Bal Thackeray, caused Kadam great distress, he wrote in his letter.

Eknath Shinde, a Shiv Sena MLA, and 39 other lawmakers rebelled against the party last month.
In a letter to the Assembly Secretary Rajendra Bhagwat, Koshiyari called for a special session at 11 am “with the only agenda of a trust vote” against the chief minister.

"The proceedings of the House shall be telecast live and appropriate arrangements for the same shall be made," the letter said.

Rebel Shiv Sena leader Eknath Shinde on Wednesday said that he will reach Mumbai on Thursday for a floor test against the beleaguered Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government. Shinde, along with the other rebels MLAs and Independents, is currently camping in Guwahati.

The call for a floor test came a day after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis met the governor on Tuesday night and requested him to ask the Thackeray-led government to prove its majority in the Assembly, claiming that the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress coalition dispensation seemed to be in minority as 39 Sena MLAs who belong to the Shinde faction have said they do not support it.

Representatives from the Thackeray faction had asked the Deputy Speaker to disqualify 16 MLAs including Shinde, after which the rebel camp approached the Supreme Court, calling the move illegal.

The court gave the rebel Sena MLAs time until July 12 to respond to notices for their possible disqualification.

But the governor has asked Thackeray to prove majority much before the date by which the rebels have been asked to respond.

Maharashtra governor asks CM Uddhav Thackeray to prove majority in floor test on Thursday

The Supreme Court is due to hear the plea of Maharashtra Shiv Sena MLA Eknath Shinde on disqualification notice against him and 15 rebel MLAs. The notice has been served by Maharashtra Assembly Deputy Speaker Narhari Zirwal. The matter will come up for hearing around 12:30 pm on Monday (June 27). A vacation bench of Justices Surya Kant and JB Pardiwala will hear the cases.

There are two petitions, one from Shinde and the other by rebel MLAs. The petitions challenge the disqualification notice and appointment of Ajay Chaudhary as leader of the legislative party. The move to disqualify has been termed by the rebel camp as 'illegal and unconstitutional'. The petition seeks a stay on the disqualification notice.

The rebel camp has sought directions to the deputy speaker to not take action on the notice

The Shinde camp claimed the move was illegal since disqualification can happen only for matters in the assembly and not for skipping a party meeting.

The Eknath Shinde camp has also challenged the appointment of Ajay Choudhary as the Shiv Sena Legislature Party leader by the Thackeray camp. They have also asked the court to direct the Maharashtra government to provide security to their families.

Shinde and a sizeable chunk of Shiv Sena's strength in the assembly are camping in a hotel in Guwahati, thousands of kilometres away from Shiv Sena's power base.

Shinde in his plea stated that the Deputy Speaker has lost his position as the MVA government has been reduced to a minority and in such a situation, he has no authority to invoke provisions of the Members of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly (Disqualification on Ground of Defection) Rules, 1986, and send notices to him and 15 other MLAs, which form part of the breakaway group of 38 Sena legislators.

Shinde in his petition said, "It is common knowledge that the current government in Maharashtra, led by the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance, has lost the majority in the House as 38 of the members of the Shiv Sena Legislature Party have withdrawn their support thus bringing it below the majority in the House. However, the MVA government continues to misuse the office of the deputy speaker to ensure that they remain in power by whatever means."

The richest state in India with country's financial capital Mumbai as its capital is witnessing a major tug-of-war that may even result in Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray's government collapsing. Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday discussed setting up of oxygen generation plants, upgrading the number of beds and other medical facilities, besides availability of Remdesivir injections in a meeting held with members of the state COVID-19 task force.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday discussed setting up of oxygen generation plants, upgrading the number of beds and other medical facilities, besides availability of Remdesivir injections in a meeting held with members of the state COVID-19 task force. He once again underlined the need to break the coronavirus transmission chain by imposing a lockdown and said a standard operating procedure (SoP) will be prepared after holding consultations. Thackeray said he will once again request Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide additional doses of COVID-19 vaccines to Maharashtra. He also called for expediting the vaccination process and completing vaccination of all health workers in the state, the Chief Minister's Office said in a statement. The CM said asymptomatic people are spreading coronavirus among the rest. "Unnecessarily negligent people are putting the lives of others to risk. 12th anniversary of 26/11: Mumbai remembers martyrs, victims with flowers & tears

Asserting that their stand against Pakistan sponsored terrorism, two prominent Members of European Parliament (MEP) wrote to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan, condemning Islamabad for not yet having brought to justice those who orchestrated the 2008 Mumbai terror attack.
In a letter to Khan on November 24, Polish MEP Ryszard Czarnecki and Italian MEP Fulvio Martusciello requested to know what action has Pakistan "taken against Lashkar-e-Taiba, the terrorist organisation, based in Pakistan, known to have carried out the multiple shooting and bombing attacks that happened in Mumbai in 2008?”

They further asked, "What action has, and is, Pakistan taking against terrorist groups operating within the country in general?"

On November 26, 2008, ten terrorists trained by the Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) carried out a series of coordinated attacks against multiple targets in Mumbai including the Taj Mahal hotel, the Oberoi hotel, the Leopold Cafe, the Nariman (Chabad) House, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus train station, killing 166 people.

In these gruesome attacks, nine terrorists were killed and the lone survivor, Ajmal Amir Kasab, was caught and was sentenced to death at Yerwada Central Jail in Pune in 2012. On November 11, 2012, Kasab was hanged in Yerawada Jail in Pune.

Pakistani authorities continue to deny culpability and are yet to take action on the multiple dossiers shared by India. A trial underway in a Pakistani anti-terrorism court against seven suspects has made little headway in more than a decade, as Pakistani officials serially question the sufficiency and legitimacy of evidence against them.

In a reminder to Khan, a Prime Minister who delivered a eulogy to Osama Bin Laden, hailing him as a "martyr" in May this year, the two MEPs said: "Terrorism is the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, often in pursuit of political or ideological aims," EU Chronicle reported.

They added that as "European politicians, we are committed to fighting against terrorism and extremist violence. We all have a responsibility to condemn terrorism and bring to justice those who perpetrate such actions."

Czarnecki and Martusciello highlighted in their letter to Khan: "On 26 November 2008, an extremist terrorist organisation, Lashkar-e-Taiba, based in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, claimed responsibility for the Mumbai bombings in which 166 innocent people were murdered, nine attackers killed, and more than 300 individuals sustained injuries."

"Subsequent documented evidence from United States intelligence reports, from India's intelligence services including DNA, photographs and identification of the origins of the attackers; and an admission by Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's of the country's involvement in the crimes; highlight the engagement of accomplishes in Pakistan. However, to date, the senior coordinators and promoters who orchestrated the attacks remain at large," he added.

As Europe also suffers from the impacts of horrific acts of increasingly radical and extremist jihadi attacks, the politicians said it was "essential that justice is served on those who have carried out, instructed or supported such terrorist activities. It is equally important that leaders of countries publicly condemn these acts of violence and proceed to ensure justice is done for the victims, by apprehending and sentencing the perpetrators."
