Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday lauded actor Sonu Sood's initiative to arrange buses for stranded migrant workers.
The actor met Thackeray at the latter's residence Matoshree in suburban Mumbai in the night.

The meeting came on a day the Thackeray-led Shiv Sena launched a scathing attack on Sonu saying he was "enacting a political script written by BJP".

Sena MP Sanjay Raut had wondered whether the BJP propped up the Bollywood actor to "offer help" to migrant workers from north India stranded in Maharashtra amidst the lockdown, with the political motive to show the Uddhav Thackeray government in poor light.

In his weekly column 'Rokhthok' in Sena mouthpiece 'Saamana' on Sunday, Raut questioned the sudden rise of "Mahatma" Sood on the social scene of Maharashtra during the lockdown.

Raut also referred to a "sting operation" against Sood ahead of the 2019 general elections, saying he had agreed to promote the BJP-led government at various platforms through his official social media accounts.

Scotching all speculation over the stability of the Maharashtra government, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Tuesday said that Sharad Pawar met Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, but there`s nothing to worry about the stability of the Maha Vikas Aghadi which is firmly in the saddle.

His comments came after coalition partner and Nationalist Congress Party President Pawar held a private 90-minute on Monday evening amid speculations that differences had cropped up among the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress on the handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"The Opposition has yet to discover a vaccine for Corona and a dose to bring down the Uddhav Thackeray government But efforts are on," Raut said, indirectly hinting at a potential political crisis. However, in the same breath he warned that "any attempt to destabilize the state could backfirea and advised the Opposition to go into aquarantine`.

Raut dismissed as "wishful thinking" all rumours hovering over the fate of the MVA regime, saying "the government is strong, and there`s no cause for worries".

Amid a Centre-State fracas, hectic politicking started in the state on Monday capped with Pawar and his close confidante Praful Patel, MP getting an invite from Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari for high-tea last evening at Raj Bhavan.

Pawar made his first-ever courtesy visit` to greet Koshyari setting tongues wagging, and later he travelled to Bandra to meet Thackeray at his residence `Matoshree`.

Shortly afterwards, senior BJP leader and ex-Chief Minister Narayan Rane called on the Governor and reportedly demanded imposing President`s Rule in the state as the Thackeray government had failed to rein in the pandemic.

Rane voiced the views of Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis who last week complained that the Thackeray government had bungled in handling the Coronavirus situation, and later the Governor called a review meeting on the subject.

Maharashtra: Uddhav Thackeray, 8 others take oath as MLCs

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is all set to enter the Legislative Council unopposed as the Congress on Sunday decided to withdraw one of its two nominees for the May 21 elections to nine seats.

State Congress president Balasaheb Thorat said, "We have decided to field only one out of two nominees for the MLC elections, which means the MVA (Maha Vikas Aghadi of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) will have five nominees for as many seats (out of the total nine)".

The BJP has fielded four candidates.

The ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance of the Shiv Sena, the Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress will get five seats, while the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party will get four, without a contest.

Late on Saturday evening, the Congress had unexpectedly fielded a second nominee - Rajkishor Modi alias Papa Modi - as the 10th candidate in the fray, besides senior Jalna leader, Rajesh Rathod, which would have necessitated an unwanted election.

But none of the parties including the Sena-NCP and the BJP were keen on a contest and efforts started late on Saturday to convince the Congress to take back the name of Papa Modi, a highly respected leader from Beed.

Earlier, the proposed height for the statues was 250 feet but the Cabinet decided that the height should be 350 feet. The height of the pedestal will be 100 feet, thus, the total height of the statue will be 450 m from the ground. The upcoming memorial will cost a total of Rs 1100 crore.

Following the decision, the burden of the expenditure required to construct the statue has been increased by more than 300 crores as the previous government had kept its height low and the construction cost was Rs 700 crore.

Maharashtra Cabinet Minister Jayant Patil said that Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had sent Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari the final list of ministers with the portfolios to be allocated to them for approval.

"About portfolio allocation, I am also waiting like all of Maharashtra. According to my information, the Chief Minister has sent the final list to Raj Bhavan at 7:30 pm today itself," Patil's tweet, roughly translated in English from Marathi, read.

In the tweet, the Nationalist Congress Party leader also expressed the hope that the Governor will soon approve the list sent by the Chief Minister. Earlier on Saturday, NCP leader and minister Nawab Malik said that the distribution of portfolios will be completed by Monday.

"The reason for the delay is not due to anything else but because we are considering creating new departments. So it's taking time. Portfolios will be allocated by Monday," Malik said.

Rumours were rife that over-ambition of Congress was to be blamed for the delay of portfolio distribution. However, it has now been refuted by Malik who said no party was behind the delay.

"There is no border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka. The Maratha politicians are trying to raise the issue just to gain public sympathy for their party. They have always been doing this. Once a personality goes down in degree, they create some issue. They just want to divert the attention of the people of Maharashtra," Ingin told media.

"The matter was already decided by the Mahajan Commission report. It was earlier under legal scrutiny which has been completed by now," he added.

Earlier in the day, amid tensions between Karnataka and neighbouring Maharashtra over the border issue with protests on both sides, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa urged people of the state to maintain peace stating that 'not a single piece of land' would be given away.

The protests in Karnataka and Maharashtra have led to the cancellation of bus services between the two states.

On Sunday, Shiv Sena activists had launched a protest near the Kolhapur bus stand and burnt an effigy of Yediyurappa. This came after protesters in Belagavi burnt an effigy of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

The agitation was in reaction to Eknath Shinde and Chhagan Bhujbal being appointed as coordinating ministers, to look into the issue of Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute.

On December 7, Thackeray had chaired a high-level meeting over the border dispute between two states.

It was decided in the meeting that attempts will be made to get fast track hearing in Supreme Court on this issue.

BJP leader Basavaraj Ingin on Monday said that there is no border dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra, and added that it is the handiwork of Maratha politicians.

BJP leader Basavaraj Ingin on Monday said that there is no border dispute between Karnataka and Maharashtra, and added that it is the handiwork of Maratha politicians. Mohammed Shami remains one of India's finest pacers in the modern era. A regular in the Test and ODI line-up, Shami hasn't played a lot of T20Is prior to and even before the last year's World Cup, held in the UAE. Before represting India in the 2021 T20 WC, Shami's last appearance in the format came in December 2020.

Before the 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia, Shami has reportedly been informed by the BCCI selection committee that he isn't in consideration for T20Is. As per a report in Inside Sport, the selectors want to continue with Shami in Tests and ODIs, however, they want to try youngsters in the shortest format of the game.

“Shami isn’t getting any younger and we need him fresh for Tests. That is why he is not being considered for T20s. We have had a chat with him post-T20 World Cup on his workload management. This is how it is going to be now. For now, he is not in plans for T20s and the focus will be on youngsters,” a member of the selection committee told the portal.

Shami last played T20 cricket during IPL 2022, where he was part of the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) camp. The 31-year-old returned with 20 wickets in 16 games, at an average of 18.30, and ended with sixth-most wickets overall.

The Indian seamer has so far played just 17 T20Is in his international career since 2014. Shami's case is similar to that of opener Shikhar Dhawan, who has also been sidelined from Tests and T20Is but remains in the scheme of things in ODIs. The idea behind such a decision also has to do with the players' workload management.
