Amid deepening of ties between India and Russia, more American tariffs loom large... The US House of Representatives has now advanced a key legislation which will come up for a final vote on Wednesday US time. If cleared, countries like India and China can face US tariffs up to a staggering 100%. This bill, known as the Lindsey Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act, was passed by the US Senate in August. It allows US President Donald Trump to impose up to 100% tariffs on countries under two scenarios. First, the country should have made new purchases of oil or natural gas from Russia, and be among their five largest importers in the last 12 months. Alternatively, it applies to the top five countries facilitating Russian oil sanctions evasion in the last 12 months. As China remains the largest importer of Russian crude oil, followed by India, they are likely to be impacted by this... But, a key question arises... Will this bill be used to leverage US interests during trade talks with countries like China and India? It is worth noting that Xi is set to meet Trump on September 24. Opposing this bill though, Democrats warned that enhanced tariffs would drive up gas and food prices in US, adding to the woes of American households. However, the resolution to advance the bill was approved by a 214 to 211 vote with two democratic lawmakers voting in favour of the legislation. Now, Trump's push for tariffs is not new. In August last year, US initially imposed a 25% tariff on the import of Indian goods before raising it to 50% over purchase of Russian oil. In February this year, Trump reduced the tariff to 18% after both countries reached a framework for an interim trade agreement. But after the US Supreme Court struck down Trump's sweeping global tariffs, India is subject to a 10% tariff rate. Now, Russia became a major alternative source of crude oil for India owing to disruption of energy supplies from West Asia due to the war. In July, Russia accounted for over half of India's share of crude oil imports. Russian imports were up more than 62% as compared a year ago. In August though, Russian oil imports fell by 26%. America's move also assumes significance, as it comes just days after India, Russia, China and other key countries of the Global South reaffirmed their unity at the BRICS Summit. The bonhomie between PM Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin was on display yet again. The two leaders reviewed progress in multiple areas including economy, defence, energy, space, skill mobility and people-to-people exchanges. Additionally, they also shared perspectives on the situation in West Asia as well as Black Sea, where multiple Indian seafarers have lost their lives due to the ongoing Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars. While agreeing to strengthen the strategic partnership between the two countries, PM Modi reiterated the role of diplomacy in resolving conflicts and expressed India's willingness to assist in peace efforts. While the bill is yet to become a law, the question for India remains — How much Russian oil can it continue to buy without triggering US pressure over the pending trade agreement....

‘As soon as we get preferential tariffs...’: India’s key condition for trade deal with US

Donald Trump returned to the White House promising to cut government waste, reduce federal spending and bring down America’s deficit. But more than a year into his second term, the US fiscal picture is facing growing pressure, with total national debt surpassing $40 trillion.

The administration launched the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with an ambitious goal of identifying waste and generating major savings. However, reported savings fell far short of the initial targets, while overall government spending remained high.

Trump’s major tax-and-spending package also created a difficult fiscal trade-off. While the administration argued that lower taxes would boost investment and economic growth, reduced tax revenue can add pressure to the deficit unless spending falls sufficiently.

Tariffs were another key part of Trump’s strategy, with the administration presenting them as both a trade tool and a potential source of revenue. However, tariff revenues have faced volatility while also raising concerns about inflation and higher costs for businesses and consumers.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday (August 12) claimed that the United States has "total control" over the Strait of Hormuz and said he intends to maintain control of the strategic waterway as negotiations with Iran over its reopening remain stalled. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "The U.S.A. has total control over the Strait of Hormuz. US President Donald Trump has again claimed that the United States has “total control” over the Strait of Hormuz, insisting Iran can do nothing to challenge the US naval blockade.

I THINK WE WILL KEEP IT! The United States Navy is widely regarded as one of the world's most powerful and technologically advanced maritime forces. In December, US President Donald Trump announced plans for a new class of warships, called the "Trump Class", describing them as "some of the most lethal surface warfare ships" and the largest battleships in US history. The proposed fleet was projected to cost around $275 billion and was intended to mark the country's biggest battleship programme since World War II. Nearly nine months later, the ambitious plan has run into major obstacles. A report by the US Congressional Budget Office (CBO) raised concerns over the project's soaring costs, construction challenges and overall feasibility. The report questioned whether American shipyards have the capacity to build such massive nuclear-powered vessels. According to the US Navy's 2027 Shipbuilding Plan, released in May, the Navy aims to acquire 15 battleships, each weighing around 35,000 tonnes, between 2028 and 2056. The Trump administration has refunded around $100 billion in tariffs collected from importers after the US Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that President Donald Trump's tariffs were illegal and that he had exceeded his authority in imposing a broad set of trade duties under emergency powers.According to AFP, Court filings submitted on Tuesday (Aug 4) show the refunds account for roughly 60 per cent of the approximately $166 billion collected under tariffs imposed using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). President Donald Trump's economic strategy is facing fresh scrutiny as his administration continues using tariffs and sanctions to pressure trading partners and geopolitical rivals.

New tariffs of up to 12.5% on imports from 60 countries are now facing legal challenges, with multiple US states arguing that the administration exceeded its authority. Economists also suggest that American businesses and consumers—not foreign exporters—are paying much of the cost through higher prices.

At the same time, US sanctions on Russia have pushed Moscow to expand alternative payment systems, shadow shipping networks, and trade partnerships with countries such as China and India.

Donald Trump has intensified the use of tariffs and sanctions as key tools of economic pressure. But are these measures achieving their intended goals? From trade disputes to geopolitical rivalries, questions are growing about the effectiveness of America's economic warfare strategy. This report examines the impact of tariffs, sanctions, and the limits of economic coercion in today's interconnected global economy.

Are Trump's economic weapons failing?

The United States administration is facing a massive legal challenge as twenty-five US states sued the Trump administration on Monday (Aug 3) over latest tariff imposition. The complaint, filed in the US Court of International Trade, challenges tariffs of 10% or 12.5% on most goods imported from the affected economies, which together account for 99.4% of US. imports, according to the states. It also comes amid latest tariffs proposal to impose a whopping 500 per cent tariffs on several countries including India. The states fear that Trump might actually go ahead with his 500 per cent tariff after he imposed fresh double-digit tariffs on 59 countries and the European Union last month. The fresh tariffs were aimed at countries that had not done enough to stop imports made with forced labour, the White House explained, but these 25 states have argued that the move is an attempt to replace import taxes the Supreme Court struck down in February. "After losing at the Supreme Court, the administration is once again trying to illegally raise taxes on families and businesses with a new round of tariffs," New York Attorney General Letitia James said. The lawsuit marks the latest clash over Trump's tariff policy, with the states saying the administration is trying to restore revenue lost after the Supreme Court blocked its earlier use of emergency powers. Also Read: Can India balance ties with the US and Russia amid fresh tariff threats from America?
Has Trump approved the bill?
Trump has backed proposed legislation that could expose India to tariffs of up to 500 per cent over its continued purchases of Russian oil, according to a White House official. Responding to a query from ANI, the official confirmed Trump's support for the proposed Sanctioning Russia Act, saying simply, “President Trump supports the bill.” The bill was pushed by late US Senator Lindsey Graham and his sudden death has renewed support for the bill. If approved by Congress, the US president will be authorised to impose tariffs of up to 500 per cent on imports from countries that continue to purchase oil, gas and other energy products from Russia. India and China have been identified as top countries in this list. Also Read: Buying Russian oil could cost India dearly? MEA breaks silence on US 100% tariff bill
Trump's tariff regime
Trump has argued that high tariffs will revive American manufacturing and has used the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA to establish his tariff regime. This sudden imposition of tariff regime forced several countries to strike a trade deal with the US. However, the US Supreme Court ruled that IEEPA did not authorise tariffs. The decision came as a setback for Trump and it forced the administration to refund importers who had paid the duties. After that setback, Trump turned to temporary worldwide tariffs of 10 per cent, but those expired at midnight on July 24. His administration then used section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to impose import taxes and other sanctions against countries found to be engaging in unfair trade practices. Under section 301, Trump has imposed the new forced-labour tariffs, which range from 10 per cent to 12.5 per cent and apply to countries that account for 99 per cent of American imports, including India and China.
What the latest legal challenge means for India
The 500 per cent tariff is aimed to put economic pressure on countries that continue purchasing Russian energy and could force India to reconsider the scale of its Russian crude imports. If India cuts Russian oil imports and replaces them with costlier supplies from other producers, it could increase the country’s import bill and put upward pressure on fuel and transportation costs. The tariff threat also adds to the pressure for Indian negotiators during ongoing India-US trade talks, with Russia oil purchases emerging as a key sticking point. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has said New Delhi is closely monitoring developments and engaging with US stakeholders. The legal challenge from within gives time to the Indian negotiators and can act as a bargaining tool.

Twenty-five US states have sued the Trump administration over its latest tariffs, alleging an attempt to replace duties struck down by the Supreme Court. The move comes amid fresh tariffs on 59 countries and the EU, while Trump backs a bill that could impose tariffs of up to 500% on India.

MEA breaks silence on US 100% tariff bill Trump's tariff regime Trump has argued that high tariffs will revive American manufacturing and has used the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA to establish his tariff regime. What the latest legal challenge means for India The 500 per cent tariff is aimed to put economic pressure on countries that continue purchasing Russian energy and could force India to reconsider the scale of its Russian crude imports.

A major escalation is unfolding in the Middle East as Saudi Arabia and Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels exchange fire, ending years of relative calm in the region. The latest developments come amid intensifying US-Iran tensions, with the Houthis claiming attacks on Saudi Aramco facilities in Jazan and Yanbu, triggering emergency alerts and raising concerns over regional security. In this detailed report, we analyse the growing Saudi-Houthi conflict, the maritime blockade announced by the Houthis, and Saudi Arabia's retaliatory air strikes on Houthi targets. The escalation has put key shipping routes, including the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, under renewed pressure.
The Red Sea corridor remains a critical global trade route, connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and the Suez Canal. Any disruption in this strategic passage could impact international shipping, energy supplies, and global markets.

Donald Trump has strongly criticized a United States Supreme Court decision on tariffs, warning it could cost the country as much as $159 billion in repayments.
