IOC's statement was backed by PM Suga who said: "In order to avoid the spread of infection from foreigners to the Japanese, strict border measures are being taken."

The vaccination drive in Japan has been slow with just 26.5 per cent residents who have received the jabs as&nbsp;Japan's medical association urged the government to take steps to avoid an outbreak.

According to reports, 60 per cent of Tokyo's hospital beds for serious coronavirus patients were filled on Tuesday even as the city is under a state of emergency which is set to last beyond the Olympics.

The total number of Tokyo Olympics 2020 soar up to 169. It was for the first time in four days that no COVID-19 cases were reported among Olympic athletes.

None of the 16 were staying at the Olympic Village. Out of the 16, four are Games-concerned personnel, two from the media, nine contractors and one volunteer.

The Games are not only affected by the Games but also a Tropical Storm that made its landfall on Wednesday. here were no immediate reports of damage and Olympic football matches in the region were due to go ahead.

The storm made landfall in Japan's Miyagi region in the north shortly before 6 am local time (2100 GMT).

The storm is passing south of Morioka city in Iwate prefecture, bringing "strong" but not "violent" winds of 90 kilometres (56 miles) per hour, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Football matches are being held in Miyagi on Wednesday. Organisers said that they would not be affected.

The pandemic prompted the U.S. women`s gymnastics team to steer clear of the bustle of the athletes village and stay at a nearby hotel for security reasons, something that takes the shine off an Olympic experience. 
 
"Not saying that we don`t have a great set up," Biles said. "We chose that to be COVID safe, the protocols and everything." 
 
Biles said she had been able to keep in touch with family by Facetime and text messages, giving her "all the support that I absolutely needed." 
 
"We have tons of resources available to us," Biles added. "But I wanted to tough it out to the last minute, but obviously it didn`t work that way." 
 
U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky, who also came into the Games with high expectations, said she understood the pressure Biles felt as an Olympian of her stature. She said their compatriots should be more concerned about what is happening in the world than whether she wins an Olympic title. 
 
"Being Olympians it`s something that we all have to watch out for each other and help each other through and in times of need," Ledecky said after winning gold in the first 1,500 metres swimming event for women ever staged at the Olympics.

"It has been a difficult road since 2019," said gymnast Angelina Melnikova of the Russian Olympic Committee, who beat the United States to win gold in the women`s team event. 
 
"When we found out that the Games had been postponed because of the pandemic, our training base was closed. We were in quarantine for a year and a half and trained all that time." 
 
Other athletes contracted COVID-19 on their way to Tokyo, at the Games themselves or in the early stages of the pandemic, threatening to derail their years of gruelling work toward the Olympics. 
 
British swimmer Tom Dean contracted COVID-19 twice in the run-up to Tokyo, forcing him to spend days in isolation and put his training on hold. The 21-year-old nonetheless won the men`s 200m freestyle gold on Tuesday to help Britain to its best ever start to an Olympic Games. 
 
"I contracted COVID twice in the last 12 months," Dean said. "Sitting in my flat in isolation, an Olympic gold was a million miles away." 
 
Other Olympians who contracted COVID-19 weren`t so lucky. 
 
South Korean sabre fencer Oh Sanguk, who was hospitalised for a month with the virus, faded in his quarter-final against Georgian Sandro Bazadze, eventually losing 15-13. 
 
"I feel like my physical strength has weakened, but every time I think about that, I feel my confidence slipping," Oh told Reuters ahead of his quarter-final on Saturday. 
 
Like countless of people across the globe, Olympians have also lost loved ones to the virus. Biles` team mate Sunisa Lee, who won three medals at the 2019 world championships, lost both her aunt and uncle to the pandemic as she was preparing for Tokyo.

The women's 200 freestyle, part two of Titmus's 'duel in the pool' with Ledecky, turned instead into a battle with Hong Kong's Siobhan Haughey with Canada's Penny Oleksiak third.

Titmus won in a time of 1:53.50 while Ledecky, the defending gold medallist, finished a distant 1.71 behind the Australian.

"I’m bloody exhausted," said Titmus. "That was a tough race. I knew Siobhan would be hard to beat. I could tell from the way she swam (in her heat) yesterday it would be tough to beat her,"

Once again the 20-year-old Titmus, dubbed 'The Terminator', delivered a blistering final lap -- she had been in third place at the 150m turn with Haughey in the lead.

Titmus had beaten Ledecky to gold in the 400m freestyle on Monday and she becomes the first Australian woman to complete the 200-400 Olympic double since Shane Gould at the 1972 Munich Games.

Ledecky made sure she will not leave Japan empty-handed however with her comfortable victory in the 1,500 freestyle, with teammate Erica Sullivan picking up silver and German Sarah Kohler bronze.

"I’m so happy. It was a little one-two, which is very cool," she said. "You couldn’t have a better outcome than that ... after the 200 I knew I had to turn the page pretty quick."

As for her disappointment in the showdown with Titmus, Ledecky was philosophical.

"Maybe people feel bad for me not winning everything. But I want people to be more concerned about other things going on in the world," she said.

Titmus and Ledecky are expected to face each other in the 800m freestyle on Saturday in which the American is heavily favoured, and they will also be on opposite sides in the 4x200m relay.

'A BIT GUTTED'

Ohashi, who won the women's 400m medley on Sunday, produced her own double with victory in the 200m medley ahead of Americans Alex Walsh and Kate Douglass.

Walsh lead at the 150m mark but Ohashi pipped her over the final, freestyle leg, of the race to delight her Japanese teammates in the spectator-free arena.

"Seems like a dream," said Ohashi. "It doesn’t feel real. In the last 15 it was really hard, my legs were really hurting but I just kept kicking."

After individual golds for Adam Peaty and Tom Dean, Britain's success in the pool continued with the quartet of Dean, Duncan Scott, James Guy and Matthew Richards coming within touching distance of a world record in the relay.

It is the first time since 1908 that Britain have won three swimming golds at one Games.

The British team won in six minutes, 58.58 -- just three hundredths shy of the world record set by the United States in 2009.

"It was so close to the world record in the end, if anything, I'm a bit gutted," said Scott.

They finished 3.23 seconds clear of the Russian team while Australia claimed the bronze.

The United States finished fourth, the first time they have not medalled in this event, aside from the boycotted Moscow Olympics.

Hungarian Milak lived up to his billing as the heavy favourite in the butterfly ahead of Japan's Tomoru Honda with Italy's Federico Burdisso taking bronze.

His time of 1:51.25 was an Olympic record, surpassing Michael Phelps' mark from an event he once dominated.

Phelps had set the previous Olympic record of 1:52.03 in Beijing. Milak's world record of 1:50.73 came at the world championships in Gwangju in 2019.

His time might have been even faster if not for a mishap with his swimming trunks which forced a quick change.

Showing reporters a ripped pair of trunks, he said: “They split 10 minutes before I entered the pool and in that moment I knew the world record was gone.

"I lost my focus and knew I couldn’t do it ... but I am happy with the gold medal."

Japan's&nbsp;tennis star&nbsp;Naomi&nbsp;Osaka has been eliminated from the women's tennis singles tournament at Tokyo Olympics 2020 on July 27 (Tuesday) after being defeated in the third round.&nbsp;

On day four of the Games, Czech Marketa Vondrousov crushed Osaka's dreams of winning an Olympic gold medal on home soil. The world number two was swiped aside 6-1, 6-4 by Vondrousova in an early shock.&nbsp;

Osaka was off to a poor start as she dropped serve in the opening game and then she was broken twice more as Vondrousova won the first set.

However, Osaka broke in the second set but relinquished the early advantage with a double fault. She&nbsp;saved two match points as she served to stay alive at 4-5 but Vondrousova emerged as a tough competitor and&nbsp;snatched the victory.&nbsp;

Kaylee McKeown of Australia powered to her first Olympic gold medal on Tuesday after a stunning fightback in the women's 100m backstroke that was within a fingertip of her own world record.

Canada's Kylie Masse took a good lead from the start and held it at the halfway mark but McKeown switched gears out of the turn and clawed back to win in 57.47.

Masse won silver in 57.72 and Reagan Smith of the United States was third in 58.05.

The 20-year-old McKeown's time was just two hundredths of a second shy of the world record she set in the Australian trials in June.

Driven by the memory of her late father, the gold medal extends an impressive run of form this year that made McKeown the top ranked swimmer in three events in Tokyo, though she had to withdraw from one due to a tight schedule.

"It's not necessarily what I have been through, everyone has their own journey. It just so happens I have had a tough time," she said when asked about her preparations.

"My legs were definitely hurting in the last 20 metres ... I'm just thankful that I have come away with the position I have."
