People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has urged to eliminate all equestrian events from the Olympics. In a letter written to Thomas Bach, who is the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), PETA mentioned the controversy over equestrian sports, citing an incident during the recently concluded 2020 Tokyo Olympics.&nbsp;

In the letter dated August 13, PETA gave reference to an incident that happened during the Tokyo Olympics when German pentathlon competitor, Annika Schleu, was spotted spurring and whipping the horse Saint Boy after it refused to enter the course.&nbsp;

Schleu's trainer, Kim Raisner, was also seen hitting the horse, however, the coach was thrown out of the Tokyo Olympics for punching a horse during competition.&nbsp;

But PETA writes that "fines and suspensions aren't enough" to protect other horses who might face similar consequences.&nbsp;

After 2-3 days I was going to join them and even began training with Seema. So there’s no question of me not being a team-player," she wrote in her tell-all piece to Indian Express.

Last year, Phogat contracted the dreaded virus twice. The first time being August 2020, since then she has been unable to digest protein and the second time was when she returned from Asian Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan in April.

While he was thinking about how to reach the venue on time, he met a volunteer named Tiana, and even though she was not allowed to do much, she lent him some money for a cab directly to the venue. "I saw this volunteer and I had to beg, ‘cause of course she is not allowed to do much, and she actually gave me some money to take one of the taxis. And that’s how I was able to get to the warm-up in time and had enough time to compete," Parchment said.

After winning the race, Parchment went back to meet the volunteer and thanked her by showing his medal and getting her a t-shirt. "You were instrumental in me getting to the final that day," he told her.

The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has labelled the government of South Australia "cruel and uncaring" for imposing an extra two-week quarantine for athletes returning to the state from the Tokyo Games, meaning they must self-isolate for 28 days. 
 
International arrivals to Australia must isolate for 14 days at quarantine hotels or other special facilities as part of COVID-19 restrictions. 
 
South Australia (SA) is imposing an additional 14-day home quarantine requirement for arrivals from Australia`s eastern states of Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales which are battling COVID-19 outbreaks. 
 
The AOC said SA had turned down its request for an exemption from the extra quarantine period. 
 
"While other countries are celebrating the return of their athletes, we are subjecting ours to the most cruel and uncaring treatment," AOC Chief Executive Matt Carroll said in a statement on Wednesday. 
 
"They are being punished for proudly representing their country with distinction at the Olympic Games." 
 
An SA government spokesperson was unable to provide immediate comment but reiterated the state`s quarantine rule. 
 
The AOC said 56 members of the Australian Olympic team were returning to SA and 16 were already undergoing quarantine in the New South Wales capital Sydney. 
 
"Not only are our Olympians fully vaccinated, but they have also been living in a highly controlled bubble in Tokyo, taking the utmost precautions -- tested daily over many weeks," said Carroll. 
 
"We have received no explanation as to why our application on behalf of these athletes has been rejected." 
 
The Australian Institute of Sports` Chief Medical Officer David Hughes said the extra quarantine period could not be scientifically justified and posed a significant risk to the physical and mental wellbeing of individuals affected. 
 
Through a combination of strict travel and border controls and snap lockdowns, Australia has fared better than many other developed countries during the pandemic, recording fewer than 37,000 COVID-19 cases and a death toll under 1,000.

Mattel, the toy company that manufactures Barbie dolls, is facing heavy criticism on social media over the latest collection of dolls dedicated to the Tokyo Olympics for not including Asian Barbie. As per Mattel's official statement, the toy-making company said that they collaborated with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Tokyo 2020 to create the Olympic-themed dolls.&nbsp;

Tokyo awoke to a huge bill and soaring coronavirus cases on Monday after pulling off a mid-pandemic Olympics that at times looked impossible and had a mixed reception to the end.

Olympic officials have been predictably bullish, saying the Games offered hope and uplifting moments, and went off without any major coronavirus outbreaks.

"These Olympic Games have been a powerful demonstration of the unifying power of sport," International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach said at his closing press conference.

But it will take longer for&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;to reckon with a Games that were highly controversial and unfolded as virus cases exploded in Tokyo and elsewhere.

The Asahi Shimbun daily, which had called for cancellation despite being a sponsor of the Games, said the nearly $15 billion event was a "gamble" with people's lives.

"This gamble went ahead, making the situation worse," it said on Monday.

A poll conducted by the paper over the last two days of the Games found 56 percent of Japanese supported holding the event, with 32 percent opposed. Just 32 percent said they felt the Games were "safe and secure", with 54 percent unconvinced.

Tokyo's 2020 Olympics were unlike any other, starting with last year's historic postponement that upturned years of planning for athletes.

Restrictions at the Games themselves meant masks for all, cheering for none, and fans banned from almost all venues for the first time.

'High praise'

Despite everything, as the Games opened there were signs that&nbsp;Japan's public might be having a change of heart.

Thousands flocked to the Olympic Stadium for a glimpse of the opening ceremony fireworks and a chance to take their photo in front of the Olympic rings.

When the sport got under way, people defied requests to stay away from events held on public roads, and snapped up Olympic merchandise in stores across&nbsp;Japan.

"If you see these athletes running in front of you, you can't help but cheer for them," Hirochika Tadeda told AFP along the route of the triathlon, which passed in front of his home.

Tributes to the athletes were a key theme of editorials in&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;on Monday, with the Yomiuri Shimbun offering "high praise for competitions into which they poured all their efforts."

There had been concerns about what the pandemic and the postponement would mean for sport at the Games.

But despite some high-profile disappointments, performances remained impressive, with world records broken and the successful introduction of several new sports including skateboarding and surfing.

The coronavirus cast a long shadow over the Games from the start, and several athletes' Olympic dreams were shattered by the results of a PCR test.

Most though were just happy the Games went ahead at all.

"Mid-pandemic they successfully held an amazing Olympics. Always greeting us with a smile and so much kindness. Thank you," wrote Australian footballer Alanna Kennedy on Twitter.

'Brightened the world'

"The Games have been held in the most challenging circumstances imaginable and the organisers have excelled," added Hugh Robertson, chairman of the British Olympic Association.

The Olympics were also a triumph for Japanese sport, with a record 27 gold medals in everything from baseball to skateboarding.

Japanese Olympic officials said they felt the gold rush drove public support for the Games, pointing to the families who brought children to venues to cheer outside or hung flags in their windows.

From javelin star Neeraj Chopra to wrestling ace Bajrang Punia, Indian medal winners received a thunderous welcome after they arrived back home on Monday (August 9) from their terrific run at the Tokyo Olympics, which concluded on Sunday.

Neeraj Chopra, Bajrang Punia, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, wrestler Ravi Kumar Dahiya and men's and women's hockey teams arrived at Delhi's Ashoka Hotel, where they were felicitated by the sports minister Anurag Thakur.&nbsp;

"Tokyo Olympics was Olympics of many firsts for India. The biggest contingent, most medals won. We waited for an athletics medal for 121 years and when he did, he did win gold," the sports minister said.&nbsp;

Neeraj Chopra's soaring javelin earned India its first Olympic gold medal in athletics. The Indian contingent is returning from Tokyo with seven medals, the country's biggest Games haul ever.

For decades, India’s quest at the Olympics has faced one major hurdle: the massive gap between the nation’s thirst for sporting glory and the number of medals won.

With 126 athletes across 18 sports disciplines, India had sent its biggest-ever contingent to Tokyo Olympics. Indian athletes participated in 69 cumulative events across disciplines, the highest ever for the country.

India's best-ever Olympics show came despite an underwhelming performance from the shooters, usually the most consistent athletes in recent Games.

While boxing was also expected to bring more than a single bronze medal, there were also a few near-hits: the valiant efforts of the women's hockey team, Aditi Ashok in women's golf and Deepak Punia in men's freestyle 86kg wrestling.

Particularly satisfying were the exploits of India's women in blue in hockey, a game they once dominated with clinical ruthlessness.

The women's team were lauded as superstars with their fourth spot while a euphoric India celebrated the country's first hockey medal in 41 years, hoping the hard-earned men's bronze would help them to regain their past glory.

The most successful hockey nation in Olympic history, with eight men's titles, India had not won a medal since the 1980 Moscow Games when they topped the podium.

Chopra's gold on the penultimate day of the Tokyo Games ensured that all was not lost for the Olympians, who are dwarfed by the country's cricket stars when it comes to sponsorship, infrastructure, training, and popularity.

As we celebrate this marvelous week in Indian sporting history, let's also take some time out to plan the road ahead. How do we keep the medals coming?

Funds are the lifeline

In the Olympics, as in life, the rich get it all. The countries who bring home the most gold have historically enjoyed the most wealth to begin with. There are three key areas here:

-- The first is infrastructure. Pools, sail boats and modern gyms are expensive. And the facilities required to produce the world's greatest athletes in dozens of sports every four years is a costly undertaking that is unlikely to be found in a developing country.

-- The second is talent magnetism. For both coaches and players, talent works in clusters. Developing countries produce some exceptional athletes, but families looking to get their talented child ahead in life might be more likely to migrate to richer economies.

-- The third is earned success. A survey by&nbsp;Goldman Sachs&nbsp;suggests that the nature of democratic institutions encourage and spotlight exceptional human achievement at a "fundamental level."

The impact of COVID-19 was felt on the sports budget of India when the central government allocated Rs 2596.14 crore or 25.96 billion&nbsp;to the sports budget for the financial year 2021-22, a reduction of Rs 230.78 crore or 2.3 billion, when compared to the amount,&nbsp;earmarked initially for the previous year.

Infrastructure

India needs an appropriate framework for preparation and practice sessions of competitors that could make them more skillful and exceptional to manage A-list contenders.

With plans like Target Olympic Podium Scheme, Khelo India and Fit India, we are seeing the government putting stress on allowing opportunities to competitors to exhibit their ability. Our competitors have endeavoured to get the due acknowledgement they deserve.

Coaching structure at grass-root level

Coaches can create champions. There are many talents, but only a coach can develop a talented athlete into a champion. The coaches should have a good IQ, they need to have knowledge about the sport and other qualities like a sharp memory. It is not that anybody can become a coach or any champion athlete can become a coach.

We need extra talent in our coaching system. In India, our athletes are more experienced than our coaches, in several cases.

The coaches should refresh their knowledge every six months. As the science of sports is evolving, so are skills related to coaching. The good coaches will keep themselves up-to-date like a smartphone.

Culture and tradition

Even when people excel in sport, they are often discouraged from pursuing it to top levels, by their families and wider community.

Social stratification that prevented people of different cultural, social and class backgrounds from playing sports together may have contributed at least to a small extent in discouraging many from pursuing certain sports.

There is a saying in Hindi, India's National language: 'Kheloge kudoge to honge kharab, padhoge likhoge to banoge nawab'. This translates to 'your life will be a waste if you play but if you study or do well in academics you will be a king.'

The privileged of India had never placed any value on sports or adventure, often glorifying intellectual achievements over physical ones.

Physical labour and activities were always meant for lower strata of society. The elite of India never placed a premium on adventure or sports.

This cultural conditioning reflects in the way the schools and parents treat sports. The first thing to get banned for many children when they reach the 10th or 12th grade in school is their participation in sports.

Both India as a country and its citizens as individuals have other priorities.

Besides the system, the five most important aspects are: sports science, sports medicine, mental conditioning, improving our coaching structure and data analysis.

Correlation between sports and nationalism

There is a correlation between Olympic medals and countries that are run by strong central governments interested in fostering national prestige.

Cuba, North Korea and China and once upon a time the Soviet Union invested heavily in finding and fostering competitive athletes as part of their national ambitions.

Flipside: Athletes' lives after achievements

The medal count and stacks of cash is a dramatic turnaround for Indian sport. India won just two silvers at the 2016 Rio Olympics and athletes have long complained about the lack of resources put into their training. But often we hear tragic stories of former sportsmen and women ending up in dire financial conditions.

Many former sports heroes fell into poverty after finishing their athletic career and have needed help from foundations such as one run by cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar.

Keshav Chandra Datt, a double Olympic hockey gold winner who recently died aged 95, was one of 19 former sports internationals given monthly cash allowances by Gavaskar's The Champs Foundation.

Corruption: The silent sports killer

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended India for electing officials accused of corruption in 2012, in breach of the Olympic charter. However, the ban was lifted after new officials were elected.

The Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi were the first major, multi-discipline event that India has hosted since the Asian Games in 1982.

However, they were marred by the corruption scandal of around Rs 70,000 crore or 700 billion.

Sports federations need to be cleansed of power-hungry officials and politicians. Those interested in the development of the sport, not self or pelf are needed. They must be made thoroughly accountable for how the money is being spent.

Cricket is not the only sport in India

Cricket became a national obsession following India’s surprise victory in the 1983 World Cup while interest in other sports dwindled for lack of success in the international arena.

India has the largest global television cricket audience but, with the world’s fastest-growing major economy after China, is attracting interest from other spectator sports keen to tap into the market, including soccer, Formula One and golf.

When it comes to Olympics, India has a long way to go, but this year's Tokyo Games was a turning point for several sports as well as women in sports.

Here is hoping that Paris Olympics will witness a better medal haul by Team India.

And the good news is, it's just three years away, not four.

The impact of COVID-19 was felt on the sports budget of India when the central government allocated Rs 2596.14 crore or 25.96 billion to the sports budget for the financial year 2021-22, a reduction of Rs 230.78 crore or 2.3 billion, when compared to the amount, earmarked initially for the previous year. Infrastructure India needs an appropriate framework for preparation and practice sessions of competitors that could make them more skillful and exceptional to manage A-list contenders. With plans like Target Olympic Podium Scheme, Khelo India and Fit India, we are seeing the government putting stress on allowing opportunities to competitors to exhibit their ability. Our competitors have endeavoured to get the due acknowledgement they deserve. Coaching structure at grass-root level Coaches can create champions. There are many talents, but only a coach can develop a talented athlete into a champion. The coaches should have a good IQ, they need to have knowledge about the sport and other qualities like a sharp memory. It is not that anybody can become a coach or any champion athlete can become a coach. We need extra talent in our coaching system. In India, our athletes are more experienced than our coaches, in several cases. The coaches should refresh their knowledge every six months. As the science of sports is evolving, so are skills related to coaching. The good coaches will keep themselves up-to-date like a smartphone. Culture and tradition Even when people excel in sport, they are often discouraged from pursuing it to top levels, by their families and wider community. Social stratification that prevented people of different cultural, social and class backgrounds from playing sports together may have contributed at least to a small extent in discouraging many from pursuing certain sports. There is a saying in Hindi, India's National language: 'Kheloge kudoge to honge kharab, padhoge likhoge to banoge nawab'. This translates to 'your life will be a waste if you play but if you study or do well in academics you will be a king.' The privileged of India had never placed any value on sports or adventure, often glorifying intellectual achievements over physical ones. Physical labour and activities were always meant for lower strata of society. The elite of India never placed a premium on adventure or sports. This cultural conditioning reflects in the way the schools and parents treat sports. The first thing to get banned for many children when they reach the 10th or 12th grade in school is their participation in sports. Both India as a country and its citizens as individuals have other priorities. Besides the system, the five most important aspects are: sports science, sports medicine, mental conditioning, improving our coaching structure and data analysis. Correlation between sports and nationalism There is a correlation between Olympic medals and countries that are run by strong central governments interested in fostering national prestige. Cuba, North Korea and China and once upon a time the Soviet Union invested heavily in finding and fostering competitive athletes as part of their national ambitions. Flipside: Athletes' lives after achievements The medal count and stacks of cash is a dramatic turnaround for Indian sport. India won just two silvers at the 2016 Rio Olympics and athletes have long complained about the lack of resources put into their training. But often we hear tragic stories of former sportsmen and women ending up in dire financial conditions. Many former sports heroes fell into poverty after finishing their athletic career and have needed help from foundations such as one run by cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar. Keshav Chandra Datt, a double Olympic hockey gold winner who recently died aged 95, was one of 19 former sports internationals given monthly cash allowances by Gavaskar's The Champs Foundation. Corruption: The silent sports killer The International Olympic Committee (IOC) suspended India for electing officials accused of corruption in 2012, in breach of the Olympic charter. However, the ban was lifted after new officials were elected. The Commonwealth Games held in New Delhi were the first major, multi-discipline event that India has hosted since the Asian Games in 1982. However, they were marred by the corruption scandal of around Rs 70,000 crore or 700 billion. Sports federations need to be cleansed of power-hungry officials and politicians. Those interested in the development of the sport, not self or pelf are needed. They must be made thoroughly accountable for how the money is being spent. President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach declared the Games closed.

"And now I have to mark the end of this most challenging Olympic journey to Tokyo.&nbsp;I declare the Games of the 32nd Olympiad closed,"&nbsp;he said.

"In accordance with tradition, I call upon the youth of the world to assemble in Paris, France, in three years' time to celebrate the Games of the 33rd Olympiad," he added.&nbsp;

The focus has now shifted to Paris, where the handover of the flag was celebrated with the flyover by jets from the Patrouille de France (Patrol of France) releasing blue, white and red smoke — forming the French flag in the sky.&nbsp;

Not just that, French President Emmanuel Macron was filmed on the top floor of the Eiffel Tower saying the Olympic slogan "higher, faster, stronger". He also added the word "Together" in it.&nbsp;

French judo star Teddy Riner, who competed in Japan,&nbsp;was "emotional" as he said, "On an emotional level, it made me think of the 2012 and 2016 Olympics when a whole stadium is with you and cheering you on, it's very heartwarming."

Swimmer Florent Manaudou, a silver medallist in the 50m freestyle, predicted that the 2024 Games will be an iconic moment for the country.

"We feel that the fans are celebrating and that they are gradually preparing to experience the Games in three years here."&nbsp;

Australia's Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman hailed his team's record-equalling performance at the Tokyo&nbsp;Olympics&nbsp;on Sunday, wiping tears from his eyes as he spoke of its impact on people back home - a nation largely in COVID-19 lockdown.

The Australian team had won 17 gold medals heading into the final day of action in Tokyo, matching their previous best haul from the 2004 Athens&nbsp;Olympics.

Chesterman said the unique circumstances of the first&nbsp;Olympics&nbsp;held during a global pandemic would make their achievements even more memorable.

"I believe Australia will remember this team for decades to come," he told a news conference.

"They've made a real connection with people back home. It's been such a tough time in so many communities and the athletes have been so conscious of that over here.

"Their performances and the way they've conducted themselves on and off the field has been superb. The Australians have taken these athletes to their hearts."

After disappointing medal hauls at London 2012 and Rio 2016, Australia kick-started their Tokyo campaign in swimming.

After thanking host nation Japan for pulling off the "impossible", Chesterman spoke movingly of what the 486 athletes had endured with the strict health protocols in force in Tokyo.

"We are firmly and calmly paying attention" to the path of the storm, Tokyo 2020 organising committee spokesman Masa Takaya told reporters.

"It is necessary to inform you objectively so that we can avoid excessive overreaction," he said.

A separate storm hit Japan last week, forcing Games organisers to reschedule some rowing and archery events, although they brought forward the surfing finals to take advantage of strong waves.

On Friday, Mirinae was around 100 kilometres (62 miles) north of Minamidaito island, near the southern archipelago of Okinawa.

It was moving east, packing gusts of up to 108 kilometres per hour (67 miles per hour).
