"I'm more likely to be watching YouTube, hanging around with my friends, and playing video games," he said, adding that he only plans to watch Olympic soccer matches on TV.

"The World Cup was much more fun, wasn't it?" he said to his friends, who nodded in agreement.

Long before Japan began to rack up medals including a surfing silver and bronze, opinion polls showed younger generations were less interested in the Olympics.

Around 63 percent of respondents in their 20s said they were "somewhat or very" interested in the Games, compared with around 85 percent of those in their 60s, according to a 2019 survey by the research unit of public broadcaster NHK.

"I don't dislike the Olympics, but for me, the Olympics isn't that high in my priorities, and I don't feel so compelled to watch it live," Ryo Kawasaki, a 24-year-old web engineer, said at a bouldering gym in Tokyo.

"If I have days off, I look for places for a trip and a hot spring or go out to watch movies. And then If I have extra time, I might take a look at the Olympics."

Munehiko Harada, president of Osaka University of Health and Sport Science, thinks the coronavirus pandemic is "one factor behind the low interest among young people."

It forced the historic one-year postponement of the event and means that most competitions are being held without spectators -- wiping out young people's chances of watching their favorite sport live.

Kosei Fujiwara, a 13-year-old junior high school student, said the decision to go ahead with the Olympics despite the pandemic had turned him against the Games.

"It's wrong to invite a lot of people from around the world to Tokyo where infections are spiking," Fujiwara said as he played basketball with his friends.

"If there were no pandemic, I would have supported the Olympics."

Interest in sports among younger generations remains relatively high, especially with a renewed interest in keeping active during Covid-19 lockdowns, Harada said.

"But in terms of the Olympics, their interest is clearly low... partially due to the variety of entertainment options available to young generations," said the professor in sports marketing.

Hiroto Inoue, a 21-year-old university student, said the Olympics doesn't engage him on issues that are important to him, like the environment.

"I'm not paying much attention to watching the Olympics," he told AFP. "I'm focusing on a business forum about the environment that I'm hosting in late August."

Yoshifusa Ichii, a professor of sport and society at&nbsp;Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, said&nbsp;older generations in Japan have an emotional attachment to the Olympics after Tokyo hosted it in 1964.

"It was a symbolic event which reminded people of how Japan was recovering and developing in the post-war era," Ichii said.

But there are some teenagers who have been drawn into the Games and its new sports in particular.

As New Zealand athletes faced allegations of similar loutish behaviour on their returning flight, Australia's Olympic chef de mission labelled the conduct of his team members "completely unacceptable".

"I'm pretty upset about this because a few people are damaging the reputation of a very strong unit, a unit that is representing us over here very proudly," Ian Chesterman said.

Chesterman confirmed Japan Airlines wrote to the Australian Olympic Committee complaining about the behaviour of athletes on a flight that arrived in Sydney on Friday.

"JAL advised that team members had drunk excessively, failed to respond to requests of cabin crew and caused disruption to other passengers," he said.

"This behaviour is clearly unacceptable and does not meet the standards set by this team."

Chesterman said at least one athlete vomited in a toilet, rendering it unusable for the rest of the 10-hour flight, but could not confirm reports the Olympians raided the plane's alcohol cabinet after being refused further drinks.

He said there were 49 athletes from nine sports on the flight but the troublemakers all came from the men's rugby and football teams.

Chesterman said the sports' governing bodies would determine what punishments were imposed.

"They're taking it very seriously, which is important to us," he said, adding that athletes faced "unquestionable tension and stress" with tight coronavirus restrictions during the Games.

New Zealand's Olympians have also been accused of unruly behaviour on a flight from Tokyo to Christchurch, including drunkenness and breaching Covid-19 restrictions by throwing used facemasks at cabin crew.

New Zealand based website&nbsp;reported the athletes became so rowdy that one of the pilots came out from the cockpit and told them to settle down.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee defended its athletes.

"We can understand that following year of training and a very successful, and extended, Olympic campaign, some athletes wanted to celebrate with their teammates before entering two weeks of MIQ (quarantine)," NZOC spokeswoman Ashley Abbott said.

"We have not received any complaints from the airline."

The first openly transgender Olympian said on Tuesday she would likely retire from weightlifting and felt her landmark appearance at the Tokyo Games should not be historic and would be forgotten fast as the sport becomes more open and inclusive.

New Zealand's Laurel Hubbard, 43, said she had never sought publicity and exposure, nor regards herself as a role model or trailblazer and just wanted to be seen as any other athlete on sport's biggest stage.

"I don't think it should be historic," Hubbard said of her participation in Tokyo, which has been one of the most contentious issues in the lead-up to the&nbsp;Olympics.

"As we move into a new and more understanding world, people are starting to realize that people like me are just people. We are human and as such I hope that just by being here is enough."

A Belarusian athlete who took refuge in the Polish embassy in Tokyo after refusing her team's orders to fly home from the Olympic Games will travel to Poland on Wednesday, a group of her supporters said. 
 
Sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya was granted a humanitarian visa by the Warsaw government. She had earlier refused to get on a flight home, saying she had been taken to the airport against her will by Belarusian officials because she had criticised her team's coaching staff. 
 
"She will fly from Tokyo, a direct flight to Warsaw on August 4, in two days'&nbsp;time," said Aleksandr Opeykin, chairman of the Belarusian Sports Solidarity Foundation.

"She is a young sportswoman, a successful one and obviously she would want to continue her career so she will need help to train and develop," Opeykin said. 
 
The athlete arrived at the Polish embassy in Tokyo on Monday. 
 
Polish deputy foreign minister Pawel Jablonski said: "I can confirm that we have issued a humanitarian visa. I can confirm that we will provide all necessary support in Poland if she wishes to use it." 
 
Tsimanouskaya, 24, had been due to compete in the women's 200 metre heats on Monday but said that on Sunday she was taken to the airport to board a Turkish Airlines flight. 
 
She refused, telling Reuters: "I will not return to Belarus." 
 
The European Union welcomed Poland's decision to grant a visa and said the repatriation attempt was further evidence of "brutal repression" by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. 
 
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Twitter the Lukashenko government's "actions violate the Olympic spirit, are an affront to basic rights, and cannot be tolerated." 
 
The incident has focussed attention on Belarus, where police have cracked down on dissent following a wave of protests triggered by an election last year which the opposition says was rigged to keep Lukashenko in power. 
 
The athlete arrived at the Polish embassy in an unmarked silver van about 5 p.m. local time (0800 GMT). She stepped out with her official team luggage, and greeted two officials before going inside.

He further added, "I didn't notice that I was already aiming for someone else’s target." Kulish, who is ranked second in the world, said, "I am not happy. Who shoots into someone else's target? Only people like me." In the event, he finished with 402.2.
