He said his job is to ensure the players are not under pressure, and while they must aim for the sky, realising the ground reality is as important for everyone.

The head coach added that, as a team, reaching the semis is their goal, while aiming to win the World Cup will remain a dream for now.

Remaining aware of the situation, Hathurusingha&nbsp;said winning four or five games will be the initial goal for the team, and they can then aim higher as the tournament progresses.

"We all want to win the World Cup. Since you asked me our realistic goal, if we can win four or five matches we can get into the semi-finals. This is our first target. We have a good enough team to do this. We have to reach the semi-final stage,” he added.

<h2>Who will open in Tamim’s absence?</h2>

While Bangladesh has two options – young Tanzid Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, to pick from to open alongside Litton Das, Hathurusingha&nbsp;said the final call will be made on the game day.&nbsp;

"We have two options [to take Tamim's spot]. We will be in a better place to make that decision tomorrow morning," the coach said.&nbsp;

"We will see if we bat first or second, and then take a decision. The wicket looks really good for one-day cricket. It has a nice covering of grass. I think it will be a really good sporting wicket. We are expecting high scoring on this ground. We will decide the combination tomorrow morning," he added.

Bangladesh vs Afghanistan will be the first of the two matches scheduled on Saturday, as Sri Lanka will take on South Africa in the next clash in Delhi.

Tamim has had a topsy-turvy ride in the recent past --&nbsp;announcing international retirement, then taking a quick U-turn&nbsp;and stepping down as the ODI captain.

With Shakib Al Hasan replacing Tamim as the Bangladesh ODI skipper ahead of the forthcoming World Cup, Tamim held on to his spot during the home ODIs versus New Zealand. After the second ODI, he complained of back issues -- which had forced him to miss the Asia Cup 2023 edition -- and eventually got ruled out. Thus, Tamim lost his spot in the World Cup squad due to injury concerns. However, the opener made a shocking claim of being&nbsp;a victim of dirty politics.

On Wednesday (September 27), Tamim took to Facebook and confirmed that&nbsp;he would have been fit enough to take part in the ODI World Cup. However,&nbsp;he won't be travelling to India solely because he is aware of the roadblocks being created for him by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). One of which, he said, was a top board official suggesting him to give up his opening slot and bat lower in the order.

I am just going to tell someone that you can do whatever you want. Is the team first or the individual?" But if I know that there's uncertainty about him playing the seventh or the third or the first game, or that I will only know in the morning of the game, it will be difficult for me to select the team. I don't think we need such a player."

Tamim said the official informed him that they were thinking of taking him to the World Cup (even knowing about his fitness) and asked him to play while managing his injury and workload. Tamim added the official said should he get picked in the first place, the Bangladesh batter should either sit out of the opener against Afghanistan or bat in the middle order, something he has never done on the international stage.

“He said, 'do one thing, you don't play the opening game against Afghanistan'. I told him, look there are still 10 to 12 days and in 12-13 days I will be in a good state so why I should not be playing? Then he said, 'If you play, we are planning to send you down the order.'”

"You have to understand I'm coming from which mindset. I played a good innings after a while (against New Zealand), and I was happy about it. But all of a sudden these kinds of words were not something that I could take," Tamim added.

Tamim said he expressed displeasure over this thought process, which made him uncomfortable on many grounds. Bangladesh face their worst nightmare as Tamim Iqbal got ruled out of the World Cup 2023 with a back injury. Tamim was in contention to get picked for the marquee event, but after meeting with Bangladesh’s Cricket Board (BCB) top brass, including the selectors, he got dropped from the final 15 picked on Tuesday in Dhaka.

As per the latest reports, Tamim informed the selectors about him not being a hundred per cent fit and could push for a maximum of five games during the World Cup if he gets picked.&nbsp;

The BCB was supposed to announce their final 15 before 6 PM on Tuesday but delayed the announcement because they wanted the 3rd ODI, which was being played at that time in Dhaka, to get over. Later, the BCB announced their final 15 on their social media handles without providing any explanation as to why Tamim got overlooked.

Tamim announced his retirement earlier in July and made a U-turn the next day upon meeting the Bangladesh prime minister. While he remained out of contention for the Asia Cup 2023, the left-handed batter got picked for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. He played in the second One-Dayer, scoring 44 runs, but got ruled out of the next tie owing to a precautionary measure relating to his troubled back.

Other than Tamim’s exclusion, no other surprises were there in the 15-man squad announcement.&nbsp;

While he remained out of contention for the Asia Cup 2023, the left-handed batter got picked for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand. He played in the second One-Dayer, scoring 44 runs, but got ruled out of the next tie owing to a precautionary measure relating to his troubled back. Other than Tamim’s exclusion, no other surprises were there in the 15-man squad announcement. Bangladesh may have lost the second ODI against New Zealand but their two returning batsman Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah played a decent knock of 44 and 49, respectively. The knock, although scratchy, should put some faith in dressing room come World Cup next month.

Tamim, who made headlines in July after retiring and then making a U-turn a day after, hadn't batted since then due to a back injury. The batsman said after that match that he was nervous while batting.

"I was nervous today (match day). I will be lying if I said it was just another game," he said. "Whatever has happened in the last couple of months, I had nerves going out to bat. But after the first over, it came down. It was nice to hit the balls again. I think it was good to be out there but there's certainly still a lot of discomfort in my back. The physios are trying to overcome it."

Speaking about Mahmudullah, who hasn't been in the team since March, indicating a move on from the batsman by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, Tamim said the batsman was excellent.

"I thought he was excellent. I was in a small partnership with him. His intent looked really good. I didn't feel he was out for six or seven months. He looked good. He fielded well," said Iqbal.

Talking about the match, Tamim said that the target was achievable and that the batsmen got out on not very good deliveries.

"This run chase was gettable on this wicket. I think we could have restricted them around 210-215. But this was a good wicket. I don't think we got out to really good deliveries.

"We have to look into (losing four wickets early) very seriously going into the World Cup. We can't win a lot of games if we lose four or five wickets quickly. We lost early wickets but there were good patches today. But to win any game, you have to stop this (collapse). We have to look to minimise back-to-back wickets. The coach and captain aren't the only ones in charge of this, the responsibility is among all of us," said Tamim.

With first match being washed away and loss in second ODI, Bangladesh now trail 0-1 in the three-match series with third ODI scheduled for September 26.

Bangladesh have recalled senior players Tamim Iqbal and Mahmudullah for the first two ODIs of the upcoming three-match series against New Zealand. "The decision to rest players was taken in consideration of the World Cup in India, which will be a long tournament, and ensuring the mental and physical fitness of the cricketers will be very important," chief selector Minhajul Abedin said. "The series against New Zealand provides us an opportunity to take a look at some other players as well ahead of this major event.

"The squad is a blend of experience and youth, and only Zakir, Khaled and Rishad have not featured in ODIs yet. Zakir was very close to playing against Ireland in March before he suffered an unfortunate injury. Khaled has done well in his List A career, and Rishad offers a different dimension to our bowling attack."

The series against New Zealand will kickoff on September 21 in Mirpur with next two matches scheduled on September 23 and 26 on the same venue. The teams then fly to India for the ICC ODI World Cup which starts on October 5.

Tamim, who reversed his retirement decision a day after announcing it earlier in July, will miss the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 in Pakistan and Sri Lanka owing to a recurring back injury.

The left-handed batter will now prepare for the home New Zealand ODI series, which starts on September 21.

Tamim is said to have conveyed his decision to step down as an ODI captain to Bangladesh Prime Minister on Thursday, following which he had extended discussions with BCB president Nazmul Hassan and cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus at Hassan's residence.

In his statement, Tamim revealed his back injury forced him to take the call at this crucial juncture, adding he is available to deliver as the player whenever the team needs him but cannot commit on leading the side given the uncertain nature of his recurring injury.

"I believe injury is an issue. I took an injection [on July 28], but it is like a hit or miss. I have told them [the board] about the problem. I have always helped the team over everything else. So keeping that in mind, stepping down is the best possible decision. I want to give my best as a player whenever the opportunity comes. I have spoken to the prime minister, and she understood," Tamim said.

<h2>‘His call (to step down) came as a shock’</h2>

Speaking on Tamim’s decision, Jalal said it came as shock for all, but understanding the reality surrounding it, Jalal revealed Tamim will undergo rehabilitation during the Asia Cup and aim for a comeback for New Zealand series and the World Cup in October-November.

"He (Tamim) has been suffering from an injury in his L4 and L5 in his back," Jalal said.

"Tamim has been in treatment for almost a year. He went abroad, consulted several doctors. Recently, he consulted a doctor in London.

"The diagnosis was that his pain is generating from L4 and L5 discs. He was given two injections. The second injection, given on July 28, relieved him of pain. He has been advised to rest for two weeks, till August 11, after which he will resume his rehab. But he can only return to the nets in another two weeks. By that time, we are leaving for Asia Cup, on August 26.

"If he undergoes surgery, returning [soon] will be very difficult. He is unlikely to do that, so we are expecting him to return for the New Zealand series,” Jalal added. 
 
Tamim also echoed the exact words, saying, “I want to play the New Zealand series in the best possible shape. We could have rushed it for the Asia Cup, but we are opting against it. I am very hopeful that I will be available for the World Cup."

In an immediate consequence of the retirement, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) held an emergency meeting with the members and appointed Litton Das as the captain for the remaining series. He is likely to stay in the role if Tamim decides to stay away from the series having cited fitness reasons.

Bangladesh will play Afghanistan in the second ODI on Saturday, July 8 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram.

With Bangladesh also slated to play the Asia Cup 2023 (in August-September) ahead of the mega ten-team tournament that begins on October 5 in India, Nazmul said to him Tamim is still the captain and that the BCB boss is trying to communicate with him.

"As I have sent a message, I have to wait and see if he replies. I am hoping that we can sort out the matter. It does not look good if one captain retires in the midst of the tournament, and it is even not right. We want to give a good farewell, but even after that if they don't want it, what can we do," he said.

Bangladesh will play three one-day internationals on July 26, 28 and 31 at the Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo.

Sri Lanka had previously expected New Zealand to be the first foreign sporting visit. The Kiwis arrive next month to play two Tests and three Twenty20 matches.

The first Test against New Zealand will be played in Galle starting August 14, and the second will begin on August 22 at Colombo's P. Sara stadium.

The three T20s will be played on August 31, September 2 and September 6.
