While investigating this case of a possible influx of foreign nationals, the authorities also alerted locals to look out for any suspicious persons. Notably, more than 120 Lankan nations from Sri Lanka have arrived on Indian shores, by illegally taking the sea route, since the economic crisis broke out in the island nation in March this year.&nbsp;

Without his travel documents, he was exploring ways and means to reach his home country. A blame game has erupted after an embarrassing incident of girls being asked to remove their innerwear, before entering an exam hall came to light. The incident took place in the Southern Indian state of Kerala, when a private college in Kollam hosted the pan-India NEET Exam for entrance to medical courses, on Sunday 17th&nbsp;July.&nbsp;

The issue of girl students' basic rights and dignity being violated came to light after a parent filed a Police complaint regarding the incident. The complaint alleged that officials at the examination centre in Kollam had forced his daughter to take off her inner wear and then go to the hall. This is said to have been the plight of several other girls, as they reportedly had to leave their innerwear behind at a separate room. The complaint mentioned the mental agony faced by the students and how they were allegedly asked by supervisors - "is your innerwear important, or your future?"

Amid protests by various student organizations in Kerala, the state Government has taken up the matter with the Central government and the National Testing Authority, which conducts the NEET exam. Kerala's Higher Education Minister R.Bindu wrote to the Union Education Minister and the Chairperson of the NTA, demanding action and to ensure that such incidents don't recur in future.&nbsp;

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has also taken cognisance of this incident and written to the NTA to conduct an independent inquiry and take action. The NCW has also written to the Head of Kerala Police (Director General of Police) to conduct an investigation and register a case, besides having to share the action taken within three days.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the authorities from the private college that was the exam centre denied role of their staff in this incident and alleged that personnel from NTA were involved.&nbsp;

On July 13, a 17-year-old female student who was enrolled in Class 12 at the Kaniyamoor Sakthi matriculation school in Kallakurichi, Salem district, was discovered dead there. The girl, who shared a room on the third floor of the hostel, was believed to have committed suicide by leaping to her death. The body was discovered by a school watchman.

She committed suicide after allegedly being tortured and harassed by professors. Multiple wounds and haemorrhage were listed as the causes of death in the initial autopsy.

The girl's relatives asserted that she did not commit suicide, nevertheless. Her family claimed in a police report that she had been sexually abused and suffered injuries before she passed away.The girl's family has blamed the school administration for her passing.

Despite the fact that protests had been ongoing since the girl's passing, on July 17, violence broke out. The police were attacked with rocks by the protesters, who also set fire to school buses. Numerous people, including the student's family members, burst through police barriers and vandalised the facility.

A group of demonstrators climbed a structure resembling an archway at the school's entrance, vandalised the nameboard, and hung up high banners demanding justice for the girl.

Additionally, two AIADMK IT wing employees were detained by the police. The violent protests have resulted in the arrest of more than 300 people so far.

Since the alleged harassment occurred on Sunday, the two accused—a chemistry teacher and a mathematics instructor—have been detained by a special team looking into the issue. Their names allegedly appeared on the student's suicide note that was left behind. Five people in total, including the school's principal, have been detained thus far.

Presiding over the event, Chief Minister MK Stalin launched the 'Tecxperience' program, which is an umbrella suite of technology services that will be made available for free or at a discounted price for a limited period, to improve tech adoption in the state by individuals and start-ups. The Chief Minister also inaugurated TN PitchFest , a platform for start-ups in Tamil Nadu to reach venture capital firms and angel investors.&nbsp;

Speaking at the event, S&nbsp;Krishnan, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to the Govt.&nbsp;Industries, emphasised how Tamil Nadu had risen in the National Ease of Doing Business ranking by progressing from the 14th rank to the third rank. On the MoUs signed over the past year, he said that 78 of the 132 MoUs were under implementation. "A 60 percent conversion rate within one year is a healthy sign for the state" he added.&nbsp;

In the revised budget speech for 2021-22, the Tamil Nadu government announced a 'Life Sciences Policy' to develop the state into a global science manufacturing hub and a 'Research and Development Policy' to strengthen investment in the R&amp;D sector. In accordance with this, the Chief Minister launched the 'TN Life Sciences Promotion Policy 2022' and 'TN Research and Development Policy 2022'.&nbsp;

The event was held in the presence of top bureaucrats from the state, government officials and delegates from foreign embassies. Among the notable firms that exchanged MoUs are Tata Power, Cubic PV, USA, Infosys Limited, Mastercard, L &amp; T, Tech Mahindra, etc.&nbsp;

75,000 jobs could be created: Tamil Nadu govt inks MoUs worth Rs.1.25 tn with domestic, foreign firms

Singapore-based IGSS ventures signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu Government led by Chief Minister MK Stalin, for setting up a semiconductor park in the Southern Indian state. As per the MoU, the Singaporean firm will invest Rs.25,600crores, over the next five years to establish a high-tech semiconductor park. This project is estimated to provide direct employment to 1,500 persons and indirect employment to 25,000 persons involved in circuit design, vendors selling secondary products, testing semiconductors etc.&nbsp;

While the district Police and Fi Service in Tirunelveli were the first responders to the accident, a 30-member team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also pressed into action from the day after the accident.&nbsp;

There had been a breakthrough in the initial days when NDRF personnel had recovered three persons alive. However, one of them succumbed to his injuries after reaching the hospital. Thereafter, owing to the challenges in clearing the heavy debris, further risks of falling rocks and resultant delays, none else could be rescued alive.&nbsp;

However, three days into the search and rescue operation, hope began to fade regarding the possibility of recovering trapped workers alive. Of the total six workers who had been trapped, only two have been recovered alive and are recuperating, whereas, the mortal remains of four others were recovered.&nbsp;

A woman carrying her baby who approached a local government office for grievance redressal attempted self-immolation on the premises after the officials concerned reportedly did not pay heed to her repeated requests for help.

The incident took place in Tamil Nadu's Ramanathapuram district, on the day when the local administration had organised a grievance redressal camp.

A few of the journalists who were at the spot covering the event spotted the woman pouring kerosene upon herself.

"When we looked around, we realised that this was happening just a few feet from where we were standing. The woman seemed to be in extreme distress and had doused herself and her daughter in kerosene and was just about to strike the matchbox. Three of us intervened and tried to reason with her and snatched the matchbox out of her hands," Sethu, a photojournalist, told WION.

"There is no respite for me, and nobody has helped… My husband abandoned me and did not even come to see the girl child when she was born. He is saying that he doesn’t like me… He(my husband Ramesh) is working at the Keelakarai branch of the Indian Bank, and has been demanding Rs 500,000—this after he took 15 sovereigns of gold ornaments,” the woman can be heard while weeping and lamenting in the clip.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly, on Friday, passed a unanimous resolution urging the Government of India to permit the state to send humanitarian aid to Sri Lanka, which has been reeling under a constantly worsening economic crisis. This latest resolution comes after Stalin's earlier requests to the Indian Government to permit Tamil Nadu to send aid to only Sri Lankan Tamils.&nbsp;

Addressing the legislators, Chief Minister Stalin said that his government's decision to send food grains, essential drugs etc. is only a first step. He also added that the Tamil Nadu Government is prepared to offer more help, as maybe required by the people of Sri Lanka.

Stalin expressed that the Tamil Nadu government is willing to accept the donations from the people of Tamil Nadu and the commercial establishments in the state and would facilitate the transfer of this donation to Sri Lanka, via the Indian government.&nbsp;

Instead, the aid has to be routed via the Indian Government and the country's High Commission in the island nation.&nbsp;

However, this move was met with considerable backlash among sections of Lankan Tamils. The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court ordered a probe by India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), into the suicide of a minor girl who was studying in a Christian Missionary school in Tamil Nadu.

The case came to the fore after unverified videos of the victim emerged on social media, where she alleged a forced conversion bid at school. In another unverified video, she is seen mentioning that she was harassed and forced to perform burdensome chores in her school hostel, despite her resisting it.&nbsp;

The bereaved family had approached the Madras High Court seeking a CB-CID probe into the case after they expressed their lack of faith in the Tamil Nadu Police investigation.

Notably, Thanjavur SP, Ravali Priya, IPS, had blatantly denied any 'forced conversion angle' in the case, even before the investigation began to take shape.

Legal Rights Protection Forum had written to India's Home Ministry seeking action against the said Officer for allegedly misleading the probe. The IPS Officer's transfer was also sought till the time the probe is completed.&nbsp;

The last hearing of the case, which took place on Friday, saw fierce arguments and allegations being put forth by the victim's family's counsel and the school's counsel. The judge, Justice GR Swaminathan heard both sides and the Government lawyer, before reserving his orders in the case.&nbsp;

The case pertains to a 17-year old girl from a poor background, who studied in a Christian Missionary School in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district.

According to Police, the victim had consumed poisonous material on 9th January and had succumbed ten days later.

In an unverified video, she is seen saying, “In front of me also they asked my parents about converting me to Christianity so that she would make me study. She would also keep scolding me and not let me stay there”.

When asked who she was referring to, the victim is heard saying "Sister Rachel Mary”. When asked if she was tortured because she refused to convert to Christianity, the victim is heard saying “it could be possible”.

As per the Legal Rights Protection Forum’s (LRPF) complaint to India’s National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), the victim’s school had been illegally converting children into Christianity and was imposing corporal punishments on those who resisted.

It added that this was causing mental agony to students and driving them to extreme steps.

“The victim was forced to convert into Christianity and when she refused the same, she was refused permission to return home from hostel. She was made to clean toilets and wash dishes” reads the complaint.

It also adds that the child tried to end her life owing to the atrocities inflicted upon her(following which, she eventually succumbed).

The Tamil Nadu government has formally requested the local unit of Taiwanese hardware manufacturing firm Foxconn, to provide better basic amenities for its workers. Among the facilities enlisted as part of the suggestions were - better hostels, spacious living areas, adequate bathrooms and toilets, potable water, living spaces with proper ventilation and overall improved infrastructure in hostels/dormitories.&nbsp;

This comes nearly a week after hundreds of Foxconn workers protested and blocked the crucial Chennai-Bengaluru highway, as over 150 women workers had fallen sick after consuming the food provided in the hostels.&nbsp;

According to the protestors, there were long-standing issues between the management and the contractual workers, which the management allegedly refused to address or resolve. Among the issues highlighted were the basic living facilities, better working conditions, hygienic food and water etc.

According to the government, they are keen on bringing investments and job opportunities to the state, but are also keen on voicing out for the welfare of workers (especially women). In line with this, top government officials, including IAS and IPS officers had met with representatives of Foxconn on Thursday and offered suggestions.&nbsp;

Among the points highlighted to the company were, District Collector's certificate of approval for the living spaces provided to workers, provision of hygienic meals that are cooked within the premises of the hostel, ensuring timely approval of emergency leave for contractual workers and also utilising services of manpower agencies for seeking replacement/backup workforce to make up for those absent.&nbsp;

According to the government, the company had agreed to implement the suggestions and has also expressed its intention to expand its operations and offer more job opportunities.&nbsp;

Nearly 14,000 men and women are employed in the Foxconn unit that manufactures electronic components, iPhones for Apple and handsets for other leading smartphone brands.

Many of the women workers are staying in the nearby dormitories. It was after consuming their meals from one such dormitory that over 150 workers were affected by food poisoning and had to be taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.&nbsp;

According to workers, the management did not offer any response when queried about the health condition of women workers who were admitted to the hospital.&nbsp;

There were also rumours of a few women workers having died, owing to food poisoning. This is said to have been a major trigger for the protest. However, the government authorities formally dismissed the claims of workers having died and assured action against rumour mongers.

According to the protestors, there were long-standing issues between the management and the contractual workers, which the management allegedly refused to address or resolve. Among the issues highlighted were the basic living facilities, better working conditions, hygienic food and water etc. According to the government, they are keen on bringing investments and job opportunities to the state, but are also keen on voicing out for the welfare of workers (especially women). In line with this, top government officials, including IAS and IPS officers had met with representatives of Foxconn on Thursday and offered suggestions. Among the points highlighted to the company were, District Collector's certificate of approval for the living spaces provided to workers, provision of hygienic meals that are cooked within the premises of the hostel, ensuring timely approval of emergency leave for contractual workers and also utilising services of manpower agencies for seeking replacement/backup workforce to make up for those absent. According to the government, the company had agreed to implement the suggestions and has also expressed its intention to expand its operations and offer more job opportunities. Nearly 14,000 men and women are employed in the Foxconn unit that manufactures electronic components, iPhones for Apple and handsets for other leading smartphone brands. Many of the women workers are staying in the nearby dormitories. It was after consuming their meals from one such dormitory that over 150 workers were affected by food poisoning and had to be taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. According to workers, the management did not offer any response when queried about the health condition of women workers who were admitted to the hospital. There were also rumours of a few women workers having died, owing to food poisoning. This is said to have been a major trigger for the protest. However, the government authorities formally dismissed the claims of workers having died and assured action against rumour mongers.
