<p>Rescue personnel said that several firefighters took hours to bring the fire under control. The official said: "It took more than two-and-a-half hours to put out the fire. It was a very bad accident."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some of the victims have not been identified. The charred bodies were sent to the Ariyalur Government College Hospital. As per reports, those who received injuries and are critical have been sent to the Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Police said that the incident took place at the Yaazh FireWorks in the Thirumanur area of Tamil Nadu's Ariyalur district.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rajendran, who is said to be the factory's owner, and his son-in-law were charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Explosive Substances Act.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The officer said, "Both have been arrested."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chief Minister MK Stalin has expressed condolences to those who lost their lives in the accident. The chief minister announced ₹3 lakh for the families who have lost a member and ₹1 lakh for those severely injured in the form of compensation.&nbsp;</p>

Tamil Nadu: Explosion at fireworks unit kills 10, injures several

<p>The row over the sharing of Cauvery river water between southern Indian states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu has spilled into the streets of Karnataka’s Bengaluru city where local organisations called for a total shutdown on Friday (Sep 29).</p>

<p>The shutdown took effect at 6 am local time and will be observed till 6 in the evening.</p>

<p>Many grocery shops and other non-essential stores have been closed in support of the agitation, while essential services like hospitals, ambulances, and pharmacies were operational.</p>

<h2><strong>Protest call gets massive support</strong></h2>

<p>The protest also got support from the Kannada film industry and the Auto Rickshaw Drivers Union and cab aggregators like Ola and Uber drivers.</p>

<p>The city’s metro rail system and the state-run bus services will continue to operate as usual and the authorities have tightened&nbsp;security at key locations.</p>

<p>Flight operations will remain as usual, said an advisory from Kempegowda International Airport .</p>

<p>In the&nbsp;span of three days, fire accidents have affected the Apple iPhone assembly unit run by Taiwanese firm Pegatron and the Japanese firm Yazaki that makes automobile wirings, both of which are situated nearly 60 kilometres from the southern Indian metropolis of Chennai. Located in Tamil Nadu's Chengalpattu district, the Pegatron and Yazaki facilities are situated a few kilometres apart from each other. In both cases, the blaze was reported at night and is said to have started from an electric short circuit. Of the two, the Yazaki fire appears to have caused more operational and financial damage.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Yazaki factory fire began around 8:30pm Wednesday night and went on for two hours, before it was put out by multiple fire tenders. Videos from the site show the severe nature of the blaze and the extent to which the smoke was billowing from the factory. It is said that a shift was underway during the fire accident and all personnel managed to make it to safety in time.</p>

<p>In December 2021, near Chennai, more than 150 workers at a Foxconn facility assembling iPhones had fallen ill owing to food poisoning, and they had protested poor facilities at their off-site dorm rooms and related dining facilities. This led to Apple placing the said factory on probation, the state government reacting to the matter and ensuring corrective actions. It was after audits and inspections that the factory resumed operations in January 2022.</p>

Tamil Nadu: Within 3 days, twin fire accidents hit Taiwanese and Japanese factories 

The southern Indian state of Karnataka has witnessed protests against the sharing of the Kaveri River water with neighbouring Tamil Nadu. The dawn-to-dusk shutdown which evoked partial response was called by various former leaders and other organizations in the state. <p>WION has learnt that the fire at the facility was put out a few hours after the incident was reported.</p>

<p>Videos of the incident showed ambulances and fire tenders on site and smoke billowing from the building that housed the facility. It is unclear how many persons were within the facility or whether production was underway when the incident took place. However, it is said that there is no loss of life as a result of this fire.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Personnel working at Pegatron told WION that there are more than 9,000 of them involved in iPhone assembly at the Chengalpattu factory&nbsp;near Chennai and that production activity had not been carried out on Monday. At the time of writing, it is unclear whether the personnel resumed work on Tuesday. It is understood that the factory works round-the-clock from Monday to Saturday and they have a holiday on Sundays. The 24-hour workday is split into three shifts- A (6am-2pm), B (2pm-10pm) and C (10pm-6am).&nbsp;</p>

<p>In December 2021, more than 150 women workers at the Foxconn facility in Sriperumbudur, near Chennai, Tamil Nadu had <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/they-help-make-iphone-but-heres-where-they-stayed-inside-foxconn-chennai-offsite-dorm-room-441487">fallen ill after consuming the meals</a> provided at the staff dormitory. Back then, the women had risen in protest and blocked a crucial national highway. The issue was later taken up by the Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn, Apple and the Tamil Nadu Government. WION had visited and reported from the dorm rooms where the women workers had stayed.</p>

<p>In December 2021, in light of the issues connected with the Foxconn facility, Apple placed its iPhone contract manufacturer Foxconn’s Chennai unit on probation&nbsp;over cleanliness and hygiene issues at their staff dormitory and dining areas. Later, after an audit and corrective measures by Foxconn and the intervention of the Tamil Nadu Government, the factory resumed its production activities in January 2022.</p>

<p>Amid geopolitical tensions with China, American tech giants, including Apple have been looking to move more of their assembly facilities to India and southern Indian states have been taking the lead in luring the investors, predominantly Taiwanese contract manufacturers. Apple also pins great hope on the young and aspirational Indian customer who wants to flaunt tech luxury. In line with this, Apple CEO Tim Cook visited India earlier this year and also opened Apple-owned retail outlets in Mumbai and Delhi. Both of these outlets are said to be doing brisk business. WION has sought the response of Apple&nbsp;in connection with the latest fire accident. The report will be updated when the response is received or further developments emerge.</p>

<p>India’s Supreme Court (SC) on Friday (August 25) deferred from passing any order in response to the Tamil Nadu government's plea seeking the release of 24,000 cusecs of Cauvery River water daily by neighbouring Karnataka state for irrigation.</p>

<p>A three-judge bench headed by Justice BR Gavai said it would be waiting for a report from the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) on the amount of water released by Karnataka.</p>

<p>The report will be submitted by September 1, when the matter is next listed.</p>

<p>Appearing for the Tamil Nadu government, senior advocates CS Vaidyanathan and Mukul Rohatgi sought 10,000 cusecs of water be released by Karnataka in the interim, to make up for the water shortage in the state, Bar and Bench news outlet reported.</p>

<h2><strong>Tamil Nadu seeks more water for standing crops</strong></h2>

<p>But the senior advocate Shyam Divan, appearing for the Karnataka government, said that the state government won’t be able to comply with the request due to a shortage of rainfall this year.</p>

<p>Advocate Divan said that Karnataka had already discharged water as mandated by CWMA and added that it takes three days for it to travel to Tamil Nadu.</p>

<p>But Rohatgi said that water has not been made available to the lower riparian state despite orders from CWMA.</p>

<p>Then Justice Gavai said, "Why do you not go before the authority? We do not have expertise in this. How can we pass any order? Please approach the authorities."</p>

<p>Justice Narasimha later said that the authority's orders were not being complied with.</p>

<p>Rohatgi informed the court that the Tamil Nadu state was also running out of water and that there was a “huge deficit”.</p>

<h2><strong>Hearing now on Sept 1</strong></h2>

<p>Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the central government, then informed the apex court Bench that the CWMA would be meeting on Monday, following which the court listed the next hearing on September 1.</p>

The woman, identified as 45-year-old Paapaathi took her own life, owing to financial troubles&nbsp;that were hampering her son's education, reports claimed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Paapaathi, a single mother, worked as a temporary sweeper at the Salem Collectorate. She had been in a financial crunch and was looking out for opportunities to pay Rs 45,000&nbsp;fee of her son&nbsp;who is pursuing architecture at a polytechnic college.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Salem Town Police in its investigation found that the woman decided to jump in front of the bus after she was 'misled' by someone that her family would get compensation for her death.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"She was under severe stress and was always worrying about her children. She had taken loans to pay their fees in the past," one of Paapaathi's neighbours was quoted as saying by the Quint.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"All this news about how she deliberately jumped in front of the bus to pay my fees is fake news... It is not true. I don't want to say anything more, but this is fake news," her son&nbsp;Rubatharan&nbsp;told the publication.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although the incident took place over a month ago, the CCTV footage of the incident went viral in the last few days. The netizens, upon watching the video were disheartened and questioned what led the woman to commit such an act.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The smuggling of&nbsp;whale vomit has become a major black market activity in recent years, especially in India. DRI has seized around&nbsp;&nbsp;40.52 kg of ambergris valued at $6.5 million (Rs&nbsp;54 crore) in the international market in the last two years alone - all of which was being smuggled out of India via the Tuticorin coast.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Previous instances&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>In September last year,&nbsp;Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) busted a similar whale vomit smuggling racket. During the raid, STF managed to recover 4.12 kg of&nbsp;ambergris which was thought to be worth $1.2 million (Rs 10 crore).&nbsp;</p>

While delivering the ruling, the apex court said that the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act, 2017, substantially minimises pain and suffering to animals.</p>

<p>In addition to Jallikattu, the apex court also upheld laws passed by Karnataka and Maharashtra with regard to sports like Kambala and the bull-cart race. It is important to know Supreme Court in May 2014 held that Jallikattu was violative of the rights of the animals. However, later the State government enacted the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Tamil Nadu Amendment) Act of 2017.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However the amendments were challenged before the Indian top court. On Thursday, the court upheld the constitutional validity of the State amendments and&nbsp;dismissed a batch of petitions challenging the constitutionality of these amendments.</p>

<p>The 5 judge bench comprised of Justice KM Joseph, Justice Ajay Rastogi, Justice Aniruddha Bose, Justice Hrishikesh Roy, and Justice CT Ravikumar. The court said that the amendments minimises the pain and suffering caused to animals.</p>

<p>The Constitution Bench observed that these laws cannot be construed as "colourable legislations" and that the State legislature had the legislative power to make these amendments as per Entry 17 to List II of the Seventh Schedule, as per Live Law. The court further noted that the amendments cannot be faulted as they have already received the assent of the president.&nbsp;</p>

Legislature is best suited to decide that."</p>

<p>Spread across 52 acres, their new factory, which is also their first to manufacture room ACs and compressors in India, is expected to offer employment to more than 2,000 people. The firm hopes to roll out 3,00,000 ACs and 6,50,000 compressors per year, and these products are meant to cater to local demand and exports.</p>

<p>S Nandhini, a student of a government-aided school in Dindigul District in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has scored 600 out of 600 marks in the Class 12 exam of the Tamil Nadu state board. Nandhini, who is a daughter of a daily wage worker, told the media that her father always encouraged her to pursue her education. She studied at Annamalaiar Mills Girls Higher Secondary School. Her stellar performance in the exams has brought joy to her family and her school.</p>

<p>“The result of Class XII has been declared. I scored 600/600 marks. This makes me very happy. My grandmother and teachers supported me,” she said.</p>

<p>“My father is a daily wage labourer but he never tried to stop me from studying. He told me that my education is my wealth and has encouraged me,” she added.</p>

<p>Nandhini's father S Saravanakumar is a carpenter by profession while her mother S Banupriya is a homemaker. She has a brother who is in Class 6.</p>

<p>Saravanakumar told the media that Nandhini was focused on studies&nbsp;from a young age.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"She saw how hard we were working and always wanted to do what she could to lessen our burden," he told The Times of India.</p>

<p>Akila, the headmaster of the school Nandhini was studying in, said teachers expected her to do very well in the 12th exams. Nandhini had scored 598/600 in her Class 11 exams. The headmaster told The Times of India that Nandhini studied on her own under the guidance of her teachers and did not attend any extra tuitions.</p>

<p>The results of the Tamil Nadu Board Exam 2023 for class 12 were declared by the Tamil Nadu Directorate of Government Exams (DGE) on Monday (May 9).</p>

<p>This year, the overall pass percentage was 94.03. The district of Kanyakumari recorded the highest pass percentage of 97.05 per cent.</p>

<p>8,03,383 students appeared for the examination in all.</p>

<p>Girls outperformed boys in the board exams once again. They had a higher pass percentage of 96.38 per cent compared to 91.45 per cent registered by boys.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The forest fire that has been raging for almost a week in the Madukkarai forest area in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, has been restricted to a limited patch as of Monday morning, said a top government official.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Supriya Sahu, Additional Chief Secretary, Environment, Climate Change and Forests, Govt of Tamil Nadu, the 200-member ground team carried out firefighting efforts through Sunday night and managed to restrict it to a limited patch. This comes a day after the Indian Air Force deployed its Russian-origin Mi-17 multi-role helicopter to aid the firefighting efforts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In recent months, the Tamil Nadu government had also announced to notify India's first Dugong Conservation reserve in the Palk Bay, the narrow strip of sea that connects India's Tamil Nadu and the Indian Ocean littoral nation Sri Lanka. In addition to this, bird sanctuaries, elephant reserves etc. have also been notified during the last year and a half.</p>

<p>"The apprehended Tamil Nadu fishermen were released on the condition that the owner of the boat should appear before the Sri Lankan court in person to claim the ownership of the boat. This is however not feasible considering the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka and therefore exemption from personal appearance may be sought for the boat owners," the letter mentioned.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Sri Lanka's navy maintains that the Indian trawler was poaching in their waters, off Mullativu, via the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL). Their statement mentioned that the 10 Indian fishermen were being taken to the Trincomalee harbour and that they would be handed over to the Fisheries Inspector of Trincomalee for legal action.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statue was found after an expert compared its pictures with the ones taken for the auction at the auction house. They found that it belonged to Chola empire who ruled during the 13th century.</p>

<p>After searching for more than two years, the authorities in Tamil Nadu were finally able to track it down and the case is currently being handled by Idol Wing of the Tamil Nadu police.</p>
