<p>The Indian prime minister also accused DMK of insulting the ISRO scientists who were part of the country's successful space missions, including Chandrayaan-3.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India will soon be among the elite league of nations that own and operate two or more spaceports - facilities from where rockets can be assembled and launched into space. So far, only the US, Russia, China, and Japan are known to operate two or more spaceports. Having two or more spaceports offers flexibility and the ability to perform a greater number of launches, thereby increasing commercial activity.</p>

<p>A spaceport is established by considering various factors - geographical location, weather conditions, and availability of vast tracts of uninhabited land, among others.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India established its first spaceport, Satish Dhawan Space Centre (initially known as Sriharikota Range), in the year 1971. Since then, this facility in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh has been India's only spaceport that allows launches into space.</p>

<p>All iconic missions including the Chandrayaan series, Mangalyaan, Aditya-L1, and launches by startups have been carried out from here. At present, Sriharikota has two launchpads belonging to ISRO, Government of India. All operational Indian rockets can be launched from these two launchpads.</p>

On Wednesday morning, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the upcoming spaceport to the nation, via virtual mode, in Thoothukudi district, Tamil Nadu. <h2><strong>Why does India need a new spaceport? What's so special about Kulasekarapattinam?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Both Sriharikota and Kulasekarapattinam are situated on India's east coast. However, Kulasekarapattinam is about 700 kms south of Sriharikota and is very close to the southern tip of the Indian peninsula.&nbsp;</p>

Rockets launched from anywhere on the east coast (provided it is closer to the equator), are aided by the velocity of the earth's West-East spin and get an additional boost.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, when launching rockets towards polar orbits (orbits where the satellite circles above the earth's poles), the rockets that fly south from Sriharikota face the risk of flying over the Sri Lankan landmass. There are numerous risks of rockets flying over inhabited regions, given that rockets detach their used-up stages mid-flight.&nbsp;Rocketry is also a high-risk domain where mid-flight mishaps occur.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Therefore, all launches towards the south pole being performed from Sriharikota are done in a manner that the rocket takes a detour and avoids overflying Sri Lanka. Instead of flying directly and in a fuel-efficient manner, the rocket is made to take a diversion and spend more fuel.</p>

<p>This affects the performance and payload-carrying capacity of rockets. This effect is not felt much in the larger rockets, but it affects smaller rockets, such as India's Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) and the ones being built by Indian startups.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Given the location of Kulasekarapattinam, just by the tip of the Indian peninsula, rockets can fly straight from the upcoming spaceport to the south pole, without having to overfly Srilanka. <p>Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin directed two state ministers to coordinate the rescue and relief activities. From New Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolence and announced that an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh from PM National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased.</p>

<p>The Chief Minister said an explosion in a firecracker manufacturing unit in Kundayiruppu village in Vembakottai resulted in the death of ten people, six men and four women.</p>

<p>In a post on 'X', the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said: "It is with a heavy heart that I learnt about a mishap at a firecracker factory in Virudhunagar district. During this difficult time, my thoughts are with the loved ones of those who have tragically passed away. I wish a swift and full recovery for all who have been injured. An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000."</p>

<p>The mishap occurred around 12.30 pm on Saturday in the chemical mixing room of the firecracker-making unit in the village. "Initially 9 persons died due to the explosion and 3 who were injured were rushed to Sivakasi Government Hospital for treatment," Virudhunagar district Collector V P Jayaseelan was quoted as saying by the PTI.&nbsp;</p>

An ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000." The mishap occurred around 12.30 pm on Saturday in the chemical mixing room of the firecracker-making unit in the village. "Initially 9 persons died due to the explosion and 3 who were injured were rushed to Sivakasi Government Hospital for treatment," Virudhunagar district Collector V P Jayaseelan was quoted as saying by the PTI. <p>The chilling cold has disrupted people’s lives in the area, who are increasingly resorting to huddling around bonfires to keep themselves warm.</p>

<p>The hill station, located in the Nilgiri district, witnesses&nbsp;frost every year from November to February. However, this year, the frost only appeared in late January. Icy plains were observed in Ooty City and surrounding areas such as Kanthal, Pinker Post, and Thalai Kunta, as per a report by news agency ANI.</p>

<p>Even water drops on the lawns in these areas and surrounding places&nbsp;looked like frozen lumps.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to WION, TRB Rajaa, Tamil Nadu's Minister for Industries, said that he was delighted about the job opportunities that these investments would bring to the youth of the state and how the investments were spread across parts of the state. He mentioned that their Government is focused on a growth model that promotes diversity, sustainability and inclusivity. He added that there would be more MoUs exchanged with Indian and foreign firms on the second and final day of the event. However, when queried about the estimate of total investments that the state could receive, he refused to reveal numbers and replied that it would be huge.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from the airport terminal, PM Modi dedicated multiple projects to the nation.&nbsp;These include the project for doubling of 41.4 km Salem–Magnesite Junction–Omalur–Mettur Dam section; project for doubling of rail line section of 160 km from Madurai–Tuticorin; and three projects for rail line electrification.&nbsp;</p>

<p>PM Modi reflected on the "record expenditure" in the states by the central government, saying in the decade before 2014, states were given Rs 30 lakh crore whereas, in the last 10 years, states have been given Rs 120 lakh crore. It is a privilege that my first public programme in 2024 is happening in Tamil Nadu. Today's development projects worth nearly Rs 20,000 crore will strengthen Tamil Nadu's progress. These include the project for doubling of 41.4 km Salem–Magnesite Junction–Omalur–Mettur Dam section; project for doubling of rail line section of 160 km from Madurai–Tuticorin; and three projects for rail line electrification. The Indian Navy, Air Force, Coast Gurd and National Disaster Response Force have been pressed into action for carrying out the rescue and relief operations. The aforementioned Forces are providing aid to civil authority(as per the request of Tamil Nadu Government), by carrying out Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief(HADR) operations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The extreme weather in the region is owing to a cyclonic circulation in the southeast Bay of Bengal, in the areas of Sri Lanka and the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. On Sunday and Monday, these regions were at the receiving end of unprecedented amounts of rainfall, leading to a flood-like situation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to private weather blogger Tamil Nadu Weatherman, Kayalpattinam in Thoothukudi has recorded 932mm rainfall in 24hours. It is mentioned that the district received entire annual rainfall in a single day. "This is the highest ever rainfall recorded in plains ever in Tamil Nadu in 24hours and the second highest rainfall after the Kakkachi(Manjolai) 965mm recorded in 1992," said the X post of Tamil Nadu Weatherman.  </p>

<p>Indian Coast Guard alone has deployed six Disaster Relief teams in Thoothukudi and Tirunelveli, in addition to an Offshore Patrol Vessel with an on-board helicopter that are monitoring the situation at sea and shore locations. As the airport in the district has been closed, the ICG is positioning its Dornier Aircraft and an ALH Mk3 helicopter at the nearest airport in Madurai, in order to support rescue and relief efforts and transportation of NDRF personnel from Chennai. The ICG has also sent a rescue diver team with paddle boats, kayaks with an additional Disaster relief team to Thoothukudi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The National Disaster Response Force(NDRF) has deployed 10 teams (of 25 members each) across the two affected districts. The teams have been moved from the NDRF 04 Battalion at Arakkonam, near Chennai. The Indian Air Force Southern Air Command has tasked the MI-17V5 helicopters from the Sulur Air Force Station in Western Tamil Nadu, to carry out the relief operations.</p>
