South Africa captain Dean Elgar has slammed the 'Gabba' pitch by calling it 'unsafe' after Proteas lost the game in under two days on Sunday. "I did ask the umpires how long it goes on for before it is essentially unsafe. That's where the umpires' discretion comes in - it's not up to us players," Elgar was quoted as saying by AFP. "The nature of the way it started to play with some seriously steep bounce with the old ball, you're kind of on a hiding to nothing as a batting group." Elgar added that the cracks on the pitch and the uneven bounce meant that the older ball was flying across. "The divots definitely played a big role with the sideways movement, the up and down and obviously the steep bounce, which is quite something to face. And also today the older ball was flying through which really shouldn't be happening." Elgar also questioned whether the wrapping up of a five-day Test match in under two days was a good advertisement for the format or not. "You've got to ask yourself if that's a good advertisement for this format." Read more: AUS vs SA 2022: Australia win Gabba Test inside two days, beat Proteas by 6 wickets on lush-green pitch ICC's definition of a poor pitch Notably, according to ICC's pitch guidelines, a poor pitch is one “that does not allow an even contest between bat and ball by favouring the bowlers too much (seam or spin), and not giving the batters from either team the opportunity to make runs.” The match wrapped up in 142 overs with 15 wickets falling on the first day while 19 wickets tumbling on the second. Australia, chasing a party total of 35 were on the ropes as Proteas managed to bag 4 wickets. Another 50-60 runs and there was a high possibility that the South African pace battery would have managed to skittle the Aussies. Batting first on the usual-than-greenish Gabba deck, South Africa huffed and puffed their way to 152 after losing four wickets at the score of 27. In response, Australia did not fare much better as they managed to score 218, primarily due to Travis Head's 96-ball 92 runs inning that eventually proved to be the difference between the two sides. AUS vs SA 2022: South Africa captain Dean Elgar criticises Gabba pitch, calls it 'unsafe'

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the series-opening test against South Africa starting on Saturday as he continues to recover from a side strain, but captain Pat Cummins is likely to return from a quadricep injury.

Australia fast bowler Josh Hazlewood has been ruled out of the series-opening test against South Africa starting on Saturday as he continues to recover from a side strain, but captain Pat Cummins is likely to return from a quadricep injury. Both the quicks missed the second test against West Indies, which Australia won by 419 runs at Adelaide Oval on Sunday to sweep the two-match series 2-0. Selectors omitted Hazlewood from a 14-man squad named on Monday for the Gabba Test against the Proteas while adding uncapped Western Australia seamer Lance Morris as injury cover. In the absence of Hazlewood and Cummins, Michael Neser and Scott Boland took eight wickets between them in Adelaide, where Steve Smith captained the side. “Michael bowled superbly in Adelaide, as did Scott,” said Bailey. “We were impressed as always with their performances that backed up what they have achieved in the past.” Australia squad Pat Cummins (capt), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Lance Morris, Michael Neser, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, David Warner WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Former Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was delighted after South Africa suffered a shock defeat against Netherlands in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (November 06). Like millions of cricket fans in the country, Akhtar too woke up to the news of South Africa's defeat which paved way for Pakistan's entry into the semi-finals of the competition.

Heading into the final day of the Super 12 stage on Sunday, Pakistan needed a miracle to qualify for the semi-finals with just four points from as many matches. Having played tremendous cricket in the group stage, South Africa were touted to win against minnow Netherlands and confirm their spot in the top four.

However, South Africa lost by 13 runs which made Pakistan's clash against Bangladesh a virtual semi-final. An elated Akhtar thanked South Africa and labeled them 'big chokers' after their surprise defeat kept Pakistan alive in the tournament despite having suffered heartbreaking losses against India and Zimbabwe.

Batting first, Netherlands' top-order delivered against South Africa's quality pace attack as openers Stephan Myburgh (37) and Max ODowd (29) posted 58 runs on the board for the first wicket. Quickfire knocks from Tom Cooper (35) and Colin Ackermann (41) then took the Dutch side to a good total of 158 runs in 20 overs.

The bowlers stole the show during South Africa's run chase as Fred Klaassen and Brandon Glover combined to run through the Proteas top order. While Glover finished with excellent figures of 3/9 in his two overs, Klaassen picked up a couple of wickets. The duo helped Netherlands restrict South Africa to 145 and end their campaign with a victory.

The T20 World Cup 2022 edition continues to live up to expectations with each passing day. After India beat Bangladesh on Wednesday (November 02), Pakistan faced an unbeaten South Africa on Thursday (November 03), at the SCG, Sydney, and emerged on top by 33 runs (DLS method) to earn two vital points. With this win, the Babar Azam-led Men in Green remain alive in the race for the semi-finals. They now have four points, from an equal number of games, and will play Bangladesh (who are also alive in the race for the top four) on Sunday (November 06).

Batting first, Babar & Co. were off to a disastrous start. The likes of Babar, Md Rizwan, Shan Masood and Mohammad Haris departed for cheap. While Haris, playing his first game in the tournament, began on a positive note and took on the SA pacers, he was dismissed for 28 as the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Wayne Parnell were among the wickets. At 43 for 4, Pakistan had their back against the wall. However, Iftikhar Ahmed -- who scored a 50 versus India -- continued to attack and played some lusty shots, using the pace and dimensions of the ground effectively.

Iftikhar stitched a vital 52-run fifth-wicket partnership with Mohammad Nawaz (22-ball 28) to shift the momentum in Pakistan's favour before getting together with Shadab Khan. The duo were involved in a stunning 82-run stand, filled with 10 boundaries, and took the score beyond the 170-run mark. Shadab slammed a 20-ball fifty and returned for 52 (22) whereas Iftikhar's 35-ball 51, laced with 3 fours and 2 sixes, took Men in Green to an impressive total.

Chasing a daunting 186, SA lost Quinton de Kock soon as the left-hander was dismissed by Shaheen Afridi. After losing Rilee Rossouw for 7, skipper Temba Bavuma and Aiden Markram stitched a handy 49-run partnership before Shadab removed both the set batters ahead of a brief rain break. At the time of resumption, the Proteas were 69-4 in nine overs but the revised target meant they had to chase 142 in 14 overs; requiring 73 off 30 balls.

Heinrich Klaasen and Tristan Stubbs started off with some big shots but Pakistan bowlers produced a masterclass of death bowling in the final five overs as wickets fell at regular intervals. Shaheen and Shadab shared five wickets whereas Md Wasim Junior, Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf leaked only 13 runs in the last 18 balls. Eventually, SA managed only 106 for 9, losing by 33 runs (DLS method).

With this win, Pakistan remain alive in the competition but still need to beat Bangladesh in their last game. Meanwhile, SA remain at the second spot whereas India are at the top in Group 2. Both India and SA are closer to the semi-finals but still need to win their remaining encounters -- versus Zimbabwe and Netherlands, respectively. For Pakistan, they will hope to beat the Bangla Tigers and pray for India-SA to falter as well.

T20 WC 2022: Pakistan beat South Africa by 33 runs in rain-affected Super 12 tie, stay alive in competition

India and Bangladesh squared off in a rain-affected T20 World Cup 2022 encounter at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. In what was a crucial Super 12 clash, Team India beat a spirited Bangla Tigers by five runs (DLS method) to win their third game of the mega event in Australia and top their group, with one more game to play. Despite Rohit Sharma & Co.'s third win of the showpiece event Down Under, the one-time winners have still not qualified for the semi-finals.

The race for the semi-finals continues to remain intense and it is getting a bit more complicated in both the groups. With Netherlands and Zimbabwe out of contention, let us dwell upon the chances of India, South Africa, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

Bangladesh: The Bangla Tigers have one game left. They play Pakistan in their remaining league stage encounter at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. If they win by an improbable margin, they can even challenge India, in terms of NRR, in the top two. South Africa's NRR at present is +2.772 which is certainly out of reach for Shakib Al Hasan & Co.

Pakistan: The Babar Azam-led Men in Green won against South Africa on Thursday (November 03) and will play Bangladesh in their last league stage face-off and have to beat their Asian neighbours. If Pakistan reach six points and India lose to Zimbabwe, they can even edge past their arch-rivals as their NRR is slightly better than India.

South Africa: Temba Bavuma & Co. are in a very good position; and were unbeaten in the tournament till losing to Pakistan. With two wins and one no-result, the Proteas have five points. Even if they lose one of their remaining two games, SA should go ahead but their final positioning can change.

India: Rohit & Co. currently occupy the top spot in Group 2. The Men in Blue are also in a good position to reach the top four, however, they still need to win their last league stage encounter versus Zimbabwe. A win will confirm them a place in the knockouts.

T20 World Cup 2022: EXPLAINED! Qualification scenario for Group 2 teams after India beat Bangladesh

AB de Villiers was quick to respond after his protege Dewald Brevis went bonkers with the bat in the ongoing CSA T20 Challenge on Monday (October 31). Playing for the Titans, the right-hander -- who has made heads turn for his batting prowess -- was in a punishable mood as he smacked a breathtaking 162 runs off 57 balls against the Knights in match 25 of the T20 tournament.

Brevis, known as Baby AB, attacked from the word go and due to his fireworks, the Titans were off to a flier and scored 63 runs after the end of powerplay overs. Brevis was involved in a 179-run-opening stand with his opening partner Jiveshan Pillay, who scored a 45-ball 52 with four fours and a six. Nonetheless, it was the 19-year-old who dominated proceedings from the word go. He reached his hundred in a mere 35 balls and also went on to slam the fastest 150 in T20 history. His innings was laced with as many as 26 boundaries, including 13 fours and an equal number of sixes at an unbelievable strike rate of 284.21.

Highest individual score in T20s:

Chris Gayle - 175*.
Aaron Finch - 172.
Hamilton Masakadza - 162*.
Hazratullah Zazai - 162*.
Dewald Brevis - 162

Courtesy of his knock, Brevis caught the attention of his idol ABD. The former South African captain, who remains very active on various aspects of the modern-day game, took to his official Twitter account and lauded the youngster. He wrote, "Dewald Brevis. No need to say more."

Riding on Brevis' ton, the Titans posted a whopping 271 for 3 in 20 overs after being asked to bat first in batting-friendly conditions. Following such a knock, the young star has made the right noise and will be in the scheme of things for his national side going forward. Many had backed him to feature in Temba Bavuma-led SA's T20 World Cup 2022 squad, however, he wasn't named in the final 15 and also didn't make it to the reserves. Nonetheless, he will be a strong contender to, at least, make the T20I side post this edition of the T20 WC.

'No need to say more' - AB de Villiers reacts after Dewald Brevis hits fastest 150 in T20 history

David Miller and Aiden Markram combined to steer South Africa home in a tricky run-chase as the Proteas defeated India by five wickets in the T20 World Cup 2022 on Sunday (October 28). It was a low-scoring thriller between the two sides in Perth as South Africa managed to come out on top after holding their nerves towards the end.

After an excellent effort with the ball to stop India on a paltry 133, South Africa found themselves in troubled waters early in their run chase as Indian bowlers gave the Proteas a taste of their own medicine with the ball.

Arshdeep Singh continued his fine form with the new ball as he struck twice in his very first over to get rid of Quinton de Kock on just one off 3 balls and Rilee Rossouw on a duck.

South African skipper Temba Bavuma too couldn't trouble the scorers much and departed for just 10 off 15 balls as his men were left reeling on 24/3 inside the Powerplay. However, Markram and Miller combined to post a match-winning 76-run stand for the fourth wicket as they helped South Africa stage a comeback in the contest.

While Markram took charge in the middle overs after the run rate started slipping away from South Africa's reach, it was Miller, who finished off the proceedings in style after his dismissal. Markram slammed a crucial 52 off 41 deliveries while Miller played an important knock of unbeaten 59 to steer his team over the line.

Suryakumar Yadav played a terrific knock of 40-ball 68 but his superlative effort went in vain as South Africa managed to hand India their first defeat in the tournament. It was an excellent bowling effort from the Proteas, who rode on an exceptional spell from Lungi Ngidi to restrict India to a low-key total.

Ngidi was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa as he ran through India's top-order to finish with brilliant figures of 4/29 in his four overs and was awarded the Man of the Match for his bowling heroics. Ngidi was well supported by Wayne Parnell, who picked up three wickets while conceding only 15 runs off his four overs.

The loss brought an end to India's winning streak in the tournament as South Africa grabbed the top spot in Group 2 with five points from three matches so far. India are at the second spot with four points and are still comfortably placed to secure a spot in the semi-finals with two games in hands.

However, their defeat have al but ended arch-rivals Pakistan's chances of making it to the semi-finals after Babar Azam & Co. lost their first two games in a row against India and Zimbabwe respectively.

T20 World Cup: Miller, Ngidi help South Africa beat India by 5 wickets to claim top spot in Group 2

At 37, Dinesh Karthik could well be playing his last ICC tournament, having been a part of global event squad for the first time back in 2007. At 25, Rishabh Pant has years of top-flight cricket left in him. He batted from start to finish during the nets but a place in the playing eleven still looks like a distant reality.

Both are at different stages of their lives -- Karthik doing some special 'blind drills' so that people don't criticise his keeping in what could be his last big tournament.

While gathering a powerful throw, he seemed to be in pain and took off his main gloves and looked at his 'inners'.
In case of Pant, there was passion and anger of a youth in his batting session as Rahul Dravid spent the maximum time looking at his batting.

At times he treated Shardul Thakur and Mohammed Siraj with utter disdain. At other times, he played and missed but didn't leave the nets.

On one of the coldest days in Perth, the focus of India's net session was Karthik's unique keeping drills under supervision of fielding coach T Dilip.

Blind Drill is a specific keeping exercise done to increase alertness as keepers get blindsided by batters when the ball comes to them at last the moment.

Dilip kept a couple of red and white markers at least four feet apart and put a white towel on them. As Karthik crouched behind the imaginary stumps, Dilip from the other kept an inclined plane used for giving sharp catches and hit the balls between the two road markers and in a manner that it gets deflected by the towel.

The towel is like a batter, who is covering the ball, and even if he misses it, the keeper would get a sight of the delivery at the last moment. This training is specially done to get the reflexes in order if someone like an Axar Patel, who bowls his deliveries at a quicker pace beats the bat.

Karthik had missed an easy stumping chance against the Netherlands as could watch the ball only when it had come near him at the last moment. The drill has two-fold benefits - it helps in making the reflexes quick and improves footwork.

The second set of the drill was with the big kit bag after removing the marker. Now Dilip was hurling the ball down the leg-side and a crouched Karthik needed deft footwork even if he is wrong-footed and gather the wide leg-side balls when bowlers lose their line.

Later, Karthik practiced catches off awkward edges. Here, the team used a special rubber bat with rough and rugged edges. The moment the ball hits those rugged cuts, it could fly in any direction - inside edge, outside edge, lob on-front, or just nosedive.

It was mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton, who batted left-handed during the drills. In fact coach Rahul Dravid had instructed net bowlers (spinners) to bowl fast and quick into the stumps when Karthik was keeping.

"We got an instruction from Indian coaches to flight it less and bowl fast and keep it within stumps without much turn for Karthik to keep. We are not used to bowling this quick in Grade cricket but it was good fun," said one of the net bowlers Khilesh.

As Karthik did his drills, Pant batted and batted at the other nets. One could gauge he is hurting. You are not a champion player if you are not hurt by snub.

After the two-hour session, when everyone thought he was packing his kits, he took out his keeping gear and asked Nuwan Senaviratne to give him throwdowns for another 15 minutes.

The chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma was present during the optional training session but quietly watched proceedings from a distance. Unlike some of the series after he had become the coach, Sharma wasn't seen voluntarily entering the nets or talking to the bowlers.

Rather he chose a safe distance behind the fast bowler's bowling mark and watched coaches Rahul Dravid, Paras Mhambrey and Vikram Rathour monitor the session. Once the practice was over, he was seen sharing a laugh with Karthik as they walked back.

At 37, Dinesh Karthik could well be playing his last ICC tournament, having been a part of global event squad for the first time back in 2007. At 25, Rishabh Pant has years of top-flight cricket left in him.

Many experts and former cricketers have shared their predictions for the forthcoming ICC event. India, Australia, Pakistan, South Africa and England are one of the strongest sides but one cannot write off the other teams as the shortest format has enough ebbs and flows and, hence, any team can get the better of the other on a given day.

Talking about Team India's preparations, Rohit Sharma & Co. have been on a winning spree in the format in the ongoing calendar year. Barring a disappointing run in Asia Cup 2022 edition, Men in Blue have done very well and will enter the tournament as a strong contender.

Rohit-starrer India failed to get past the Super 12 round in last year's edition, however, will be eager to go the distance this time around and win the trophy for the second time, after the 2007 edition.

Prize money for T20 World Cup: Full list out! Winner to walk away with a WHOPPING sum

India will take on Soth Africa in the series-opener of the three-match T20I series at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala on Wednesday (September 28). After a 2-1 win against Australia in their recently-concluded T20I assignment at home, the Men in Blue will be looking to continue their winning run against the Proteas.

The T20I series against South Africa will be India's final assignment in the shortest format ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia next month. The hosts will be looking to make the best use of the series and play their full-strength XI in order to fine-tune their preparations ahead of the World Cup.

However, India face some selection headaches against the Proteas as they will be missing the services of all-rounders Deepak Hooda and Hardik Pandya along with senior fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar. While Bhuvneshwar and Hardik have been rested from the series, Hooda misses out due to a back injury.

India have roped in Shreyas Iyer and Shahbaz Ahmed in the absence of Hardik and Hooda while young pacer Arshdeep Singh will return to take Bhuvneshwar's spot in the squad. Mohammed Shami will continue to remain sidelined as he is yet to recover from COVID-19.

It will be crucial for India to get their selection right against a strong South African side in order to ensure they can continue their winning momentum ahead of the World Cup. In the absence o Hardik, Axar Patel is likely to be the sole all-rounder in the side with Rishabh Pant returning to strengthen the middle-order.

India will miss Hardik's quality in the bowling attack but having Arsdheep back is a huge boost as the left-arm seamer has been impressive in the death overs. Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel will continue to spearhead the pace attack while Yuzvendra Chahal can be the solitary spinner in the team.

India will lack a sixth bowling option in the absence of Hardik but they can make up for it with the bat as they will have incredible depth in the batting line-up with Dinesh Karthik and Axar Patel in the lower-middle order. Deepak Chahar and Shahbaz Ahmed also remain strong contenders for a spot in the playing XI but are unlikely to make the cut in the series opener.

India's predicted playing XI for 1st T20I against South Africa:

As the entire nation mourns the unfortunate demise of its monarch, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced plans to resume the three-match Test series between England and South Africa. This comes shortly after play was suspended on Friday in the aftermath of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's passing.

This seemingly comes as the direct result of the Government's latest update, allowing sporting authorities to resume or halt active play based on their personal discretion. However, it is interesting to note that footballing action across the country has come to a stop.

The decision has been taken after consultation with DCMS and in line with Official National Mourning guidance. The scheduled match between England and Sri Lanka Men's U19 along with recreational cricket fixtures will also take place as planned. “Before each match, a minute's silence will be observed followed by the national anthem. All players and coaches will wear black armbands. South Africa`s Quinton de Kock says it will become difficult for players to participate in all three formats of cricket if more games continue to be added to the sport`s packed schedule. Cricket`s busy calendar attracted criticism when England all-rounder Ben Stokes announced his retirement from one-day internationals (ODI) this month.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Wasim Akram last week said he understood the reasons behind Stokes`s decision, while ex-England captain Nasser Hussain described the global cricket schedule as "madness".

"It`s going to start being tough for players -- three formats is a lot and it looks like more games are happening over the calendar," De Kock told reporters on Sunday, after England`s third ODI against South Africa was abandoned due to rain.

5th T20I between India and South Africa called off due to rain, series shared

India will lock horns with South Africa in the series-deciding fifth and final T20I of the ongoing five-match series at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday (June 19). The series is currently locked at 2-2 after India won the last two games on the trot following defeats in the first two matches. India thrashed the visitors by 82 runs in the penultimate 4th T20I which was played in Rajkot on Friday. Rishabh Pant & Co. will be hoping to continue their winning run against the Proteas on Sunday.

India didn't get off to an ideal start in the T20I series against South Africa with Pant leading the side in the absence of both Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. The hosts lost the first two games on the trot before bouncing back to level the series and take it to the decider on Sunday.

While India's top-order failed to deliver yet again in the last encounter between the two sides, both Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik continued their fabulous run with the bat. Karthik played a sensational knock of 27-ball 55 while Pandya scored a crucial 46 off 31 balls to help India post a fighting total of 169 runs on the board.

However, it turned out to be a one-sided affair after Avesh Khan ran riot with the ball during South Africa's run-chase. The Indian pacer picked up a four-wicket haul to bundle out the Proteas for a paltry 87 and secure a comfortable 82-run victory for the hosts.

India have not made any changes in their line-up throughout the series and are expected to field the same playing XI in the series decider in Bengaluru on Sunday. However, the batters will have to step up and give the hosts a good start at the top to ensure they can make the most of the batting-friendly track at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

The spotlight will be on the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer, who have all been far from consistent in the ongoing series. Meanwhile, Yuzvenda Chahal would also be hoping to produce a better show with the ball after his lacklustre performances so far in the series.

India vs South Africa 5th T20I prediction:

India have found the winning momentum with back-to-back victories in the last two games and will be hoping to make it three wins in a row on Sunday. Pant & Co. have a settled bowling attack and will hope for the batters to step up in the decider to help them clinch the series. India are likely to trounce South Africa and clinch the series on Sunday.

IND vs SA prediction: Who will win series-deciding 5th T20I between India and South Africa in Bengaluru?

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj took seven wickets as South Africa made light work of bowling Bangladesh out for 53 in 19 overs in their second innings to claim a 220-run victory in the first Test at Kingsmead on Monday. It was the lowest test innings total at Kingsmead, less than the 66 India managed in 1996.

Bangladesh had been set a target of 274 for the win but resumed on the fifth morning on 11 for three and were bowled out inside 55 minutes. Maharaj took 7-32 and fellow spinner Simon Harmer 3-21 to complete a dominant performance for the home side.

It will be a memorable victory for the South Africans, who are missing five first team regulars that have opted to play in the Indian Premier League, including their entire frontline pace attack. South Africa’s lack of bowling options had in part forced them to play two spinners at a venue that has traditionally been known to favour the seamers.

Maharaj’s effort was all the more impressive after he bowled with a finger injury on the fourth and fifth days, but the guile and accuracy with which he and Harmer attacked the Bangladeshis was impressively relentless. Maharaj trapped Mushfiqur Rahim (0) leg before wicket in the opening over of the day and from then on it was a procession of batsmen back to the pavilion. He had the dangerous Litton Das (2) caught by Harmer at mid-on, and then bowler Yasir Ali (5) with a delivery that pitched on middle stump and hit off.
Harmer removed Mehidy Hasan Miraz (0) and innings top-scorer Najmul Hossain Shanto (26), the latter stumped by wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, before Maharaj claimed the final two wickets.

The second test begins in Gqeberha, formerly known as Port Elizabeth, on Thursday.

Dean Elgar-led South Africa claim big victory as Keshav Maharaj, Simon Harmer put Bangladesh in a spin

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh. The two-match Test series which will be hosted by South Africa will get underway from March 31 in Durban. None of the Indian Premier League (IPL)-bound players have been named in the Test squad.

South Africa's Test skipper Dean Elgar had recently appealed to all his players to remain available for the Bangladesh Tests as he wanted to head into the series with his best squad. Elgar had requested the IPL-bound South African players to prioritise their country over the T20 league.

However, despite the South African skipper's request, none of the IPL-bound players have been included in the squad. "I can't take the field without my best side in order to give ourselves the best chance. I need my best players. You don't want players to miss out on a big occasion like the IPL, by no means. But I'd still like to think playing for your country is bigger than that," Elgar had said in a press conference earlier this month.

There are a host of South African players who are part of different franchises for the upcoming IPL 2022. The likes of Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Aiden Markram among others are integral members of the South African Test team but will be playing in IPL 2022 while skipping the Test series against Bangladesh.

Reacting to the development, Cricket South Africa (CSA) in a statement clarified that the board is currently not at liberty to refuse players the opportunity to not take part in the IPL. CSA said the Test team against Bangladesh will be without the IPL-bound players.

'CSA not at liberty to refuse': IPL bound-players not named in South Africa's squad for Bangladesh Tests

South Africa turned the tables on New Zealand with a 198-run victory in the second test in Christchurch on Tuesday, crushing the hosts` hopes of a breakthrough series win over the Proteas. Having suffered their second-worst test defeat in the first meeting in Christchurch, South Africa rebounded superbly at Hagley Oval, dismissing the Black Caps for 227 in their second innings just after tea on day five. Chasing a would-be world record victory target of 426 runs, New Zealand resumed on 94 for four in the morning and there was a flicker of hope they might save the match as wicketkeeper Tom Blundell and all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme reached lunch at 180 for five.

However, the home side`s resistance faded quickly after the break when both players tossed away their wickets by pulling paceman Marco Jansen to fielders. Jansen and pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada worked through the tail with the second new ball, before an untimely rain break brought an early tea with South Africa needing one wicket for victory.

Spinner Keshav Maharaj sealed the win by trapping Matt Henry lbw for a duck. Man of the Match Rabada said it was important his team stepped up after being thrashed in the opener. "It`s never easy playing against New Zealand and we knew what we had to do and I`m glad that we could get the job done," he added.

"In the first test we completely didn`t rock up ... We knew we had to win this one, at least to make it 1-1."
New Zealand seamer Henry, named Player of the Series, said the hosts were disappointed not to pick up their first test series win over the Proteas. "Obviously we had a lot hopes coming into this game but you just have to take my hat off to South Africa," said Henry.

"I thought they came back very strong and thoroughly deserved the second test. It was in the balance a lot, I think ... It really just kept swinging back into their favour. We kept fighting but it just wasn`t quite there in the end."

Lutho Sipamla earlier denied New Zealand number three Devon Conway his fourth test century, breaking a stubborn fifth-wicket partnership of 85 runs with Blundell. The Proteas` third seamer trapped Conway lbw for 92 and New Zealand lost a DRS referral when the batsman tried to overturn the decision.
Blundell had batted with poise and patience until he swung a half-hearted pull shot to give Temba Bavuma a simple catch at short midwicket.

De Grandhomme, who scored a century in the first innings, was out pulling straight to Wiaan Mulder at leg gully in Jansen`s next over. Jansen grabbed a third wicket when tail ender Kyle Jamieson was out for 12 slogging to Rabada in the deep.

Rabada returned to the attack, having Tim Southee top-edge to Sipamla at midwicket to be out for 17, leaving Maharaj to claim the final wicket for victory.

We knew we had to win this one, at least to make it 1-1." New Zealand seamer Henry, named Player of the Series, said the hosts were disappointed not to pick up their first test series win over the Proteas. "Obviously we had a lot hopes coming into this game but you just have to take my hat off to South Africa," said Henry. "I thought they came back very strong and thoroughly deserved the second test. It was in the balance a lot, I think ... It really just kept swinging back into their favour. We kept fighting but it just wasn`t quite there in the end." Dean Elgar's South Africa beat hosts New Zealand by 198 runs in second and final Test, level series

South Africa bagged their second win on the trot in the ongoing three-match ODI series against India as they thrashed the visitors by seven wickets in the second ODI at the Boland Park in Paarl on Friday (January 21). It was yet another dominant performance from the hosts, who chased down the target of 288 runs comfortably with seven wickets to spare.

Rishabh Pant's brilliant knock of 85 runs went in vain as India lost the game comprehensively and conceded the series with back-to-back defeats. It was a must-win game for the KL Rahul-led side after a 31-run loss in the series opener at the same venue. However, South Africa once again proved too good for the Men in Blue.

Opting to bat first, India got off to a decent start with a 63-run stand for the first wicket between openers Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan. Aiden Markram drew the first blood for the Proteas as he got rid of Dhawan on 29 off 38 balls before Keshav Mahara sent Virat Kohli packing on a duck to pile misery on India.

However, Rahul then combined with Pant to steady the ship as the duo put together a 115-run stand for the third wicket. While Rahul scored 55 off 79 balls, Pant displayed some brilliant strokeplay in his quickfire 85 off just 71 balls. The wicket-keeper batter missed out on a well-deserved hundred but created the record for the highest individual score by an Indian wicket-keeper batter in an ODI in South Africa.

With the help of half-centuries from Rahul, Pant and crucial cameos from Shardul Thakur (40) and R Ashwin (25), India posted a fighting total of 287 runs on the board in their quota of 50 overs. However, the bowlers let the visitors down as South Africa had chased down the target comfortably.

Openers Janneman Malan and Quinton de Kock slammed half-centuries apiece to set up an easy chase for the hosts. While De Kock scored 78 off 66 balls laced with seven fours and three sixes, Malan missed out his century by just nine runs as he notched up a superb 91 off 108 balls.

The South African openers took the Indian bowlers to the cleaners and got the hosts off to a perfect start in the run-chase. The duo added a huge stand of 132 runs for the first wicket before handy knocks from skipper Temba Bavuma (35), Aiden Markram (37) and Rassie van der Dussen (37) helped South Africa overhaul the target with 11 balls to spare.

Rishabh Pant's brilliant knock in vain as South Africa thrash India by seven wickets in 2nd ODI, clinch series

Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Tuesday confirmed that seam bowler Kagiso Rabada has been released from the team for the upcoming series against India.

The decision has been taken due to high workloads over a sustained period of time and the need for him to recover prior to the outbound Test series against New Zealand next month.

"No replacement will be brought in for him as there is an extended squad in place in the Bio-Secure Environment (BSE), but George Linde has been retained from the Test team as an extra spin-bowling option for the series," stated an official Cricket South Africa (CSA) release.

Earlier on Tuesday, South Africa limited-overs skipper Temba Bavuma said that his side would look to take the momentum from the Test series onto the upcoming ODI series against India.

India and South Africa will lock horns in a three-match ODI series, with the first match set to be played on Wednesday in Paarl. Earlier, the Proteas had defeated India 2-1 in the Test series.

"Yeah, momentum is a real thing, you would have seen after the first Test, how we managed to get some momentum in the Johannesburg Test and how we carried through. Momentum is a real thing, obviously, it is a different format and there is a different kind of pressure. Confidence is well within the team and we will be leading onto that to inspire the new guys," said Bavuma during a virtual press conference.

"I would like to have as many options as possible considering the balance of the team. I am not aware of any physical or mental issues with Quinton de Kock. He had his commitments with his family, he is here with the team now and he is training with the team. As far as I know, Quinton is fit and fine," he added.

Talking about Quinton de Kock, Bavuma said: "It is good to see him again. We obviously missed him in the Test team but he has made his decision to retire from the longest format. We respect his decision, having him back has been good. Quinton will have a point to prove and I am sure he is also as excited as we are to see him in the team."

Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane's saga of failures compounded a shoddy batting performance by India even as stand-in skipper KL Rahul impressed with a defiant show amid the ruins on the opening day of the second Test against South Africa here on Monday.

Rahul's patient 50-run knock on a day when India missed Virat Kohli due to back spasms and Ravichandran Ashwin's cavalier 46 at the rear end ensured that India scored 202 in their first innings on a bouncy Wanderers track.

At stumps, Mohammed Shami sent back Aiden Markram even as Dean Elgar (11 batting) and Keegan Peterson (14 batting) took South Africa to 35 for 1. It could have been two down had Rishabh Pant snapped Peterson off Jasprit Bumrah, which seemed a regulation catch.

Worse, Mohammed Siraj hobbled off with what looked like a hamstring strain and if it's bad news, then India would be left with four bowlers.

However, a lot of blame should go to India's batters as some like Pujara didn't show intent to score while others like Rahane seemed completely short of confidence.

It prompted the legendary Sunil Gavaskar to say it as it is on air, "I think the next innings will be their last chance."
Having given up hopes to play for England, Duanne Olivier (3/67 in 17 overs), playing his first game for South Africa in three years, dismissed Pujara (3 off 33 balls) and Rahane (0) off successive deliveries to make it difficult for the Indians.

Marco Jansen (4/31 in 17 overs), with his giant frame, created awkward lengths for every Indian batter while Kagiso Rabada (3/64 in 17.1 overs), despite not being at his best, got wickets when it mattered.

In his first game as captain, Rahul concentrated hard as he played 133 deliveries. He was peppered with short balls. He would sway to some and duck the others while pulling the ones that he could.

His back-foot driving was majestic and he rode the bounce while going for the flashy cut shots. Such is beauty of sport that Rahul, who till five months ago wasn't supposed to start as an opener in England, is now being groomed as an all-format India captain.

If the first day composure is any indication, he won't do a bad job. But then there was a moment's indiscretion when he played one pull shot too many and holed out in the fine leg region.

Prior to that shot, the occasional pull that he played, Rahul rolled his bat over and tried to keep it down the ground but in this case, he got under the Jansen short ball and didn't get the required elevation.

He had a nice little partnership of 42 runs with Hanuma Vihari (20) before an inspirational close-in catch from Rassie Van der Dussen at short leg sent the latter back.

Rishabh Pant (17) and an attacking Ashwin (24 batting 21 balls) added 40 in quick time but what India needed was a partnership of at least 75 if not 100.

At the start, Mayank Agarwal (26) looked fluent in the first hour with five boundaries before Jansen pitched one in the spot from where it wasn't on drivable length as it climbed on. The opener went for a drive only to edge that to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne.

Rahul, on his part, survived strong caught behind and leg before appeals which were negated by debutant umpire Allahudien Palekar, someone who impressed on debut.

But what would disappoint Pujara and Rahane most is that on a day when they should have taken more responsibility in Kohli's absence, they couldn't even inject a sense of positivity in India's approach.

The manner in which Pujara hopped and skipped to rising deliveries actually would have made the dressing room feel jittery about demons in the pitch which wasn't the case. But there was definitely seam and bounce which one expects here in South Africa.

He once again got into a shell and was very uncomfortable against steep bounce which finally became his undoing.
Olivier's natural back of length deliveries were perfect recipe for disaster as he fended one that was wide of the short leg fielder but the next one lobbed up to the man at point for an easy catch.

Rahane's dismissal was that of a player, whose confidence has been torn to pieces. The ball pitched on the fourth stump channel, created indecision on whether to play or not and Rahane dangled his bat for the catch to be taken in the slips.

This match will certainly not last the distance and if they can't make a difference in the second innings, the enormous patience that the Indian team management has shown towards them will definitely start wearing thin.

Rahane, Pujara's flop show continues as Indian middle-order disappoints again in 2nd Test against SA

India are all set to take on South Africa in a three-match Test series starting from December 26. The first Test will be a Boxing Day game that gets underway at the SuperSport Park in Centurion from Sunday. India are heading into the series on a confident note after defeating world Test champions New Zealand 1-0 in the recently-concluded two-match series at home but the South Africa series will be one of the most challenging assignments for the Virat Kohli-led side.

India have never won a Test series in South Africa and have managed only three wins in Test matches in the Rainbow nation so far in their cricketing history. India have always found it difficult to take down the Proteas in their own backyard in the longest format of the game.

However, with a South Africa team that is currently not on top of its game, and India running high on confidence with a number of talented players in their line-up, it might be a different result this time around. However, former India opener and popular commentator Aakash Chopra believes India won't be able to win the Test series in South Africa this year as well.

Speaking in a video shared on his YouTube channel, Chopra predicted the three-match series to end in a 1-1 draw. He said he would have predicted South Africa to win it 2-1 but an injury to their premie pacer Anrich Nortje has improved India's chances in the Test series. Not just Nortje, South Africa are also set to miss Quinton De Kock for a part of the series.

"I don't see India winning this right now, I mean it is difficult. I would have said 2-1 for South Africa if Nortje was playing. Nortje is not there, I am saying this series can again end at 1-1. There is a chance of a drawn Test match, the first Test could be in slight trouble because of rain," said Chopra.

"It is going to be interesting but I feel this might be a drawn series. 51% South Africa, 49% India. That's what I am thinking at this point in time. If any team wins, I feel that will be South Africa," he added.

South Africa are no more the giants of Test cricket that they once were and have had to deal with a fair share of their own struggles. The team is in transition and will also miss former captain Faf du Plessis, who has already retired from the longest format. While admitting that the current South Africa side has not been able to produce the desired results, Chopra said the hosts have started to regroup well recently.

"It is not that South Africa's team is flying high. I think they are starting to regroup really well. The World Cup has shown that they have the players, where the things are falling in place but it is still a team in transition," said the former India batter.

India have their best chance to win a Test series in South Africa this year considering the talent and experience in their squad and the lack of big names in the South Africa line-up. Kohli, who has led India to some phenomenal wins overseas, will be looking to script history by inspiring the team to their maiden triumph against the Proteas in their own backyard.

'Don't see India winning this': Former opener makes bold prediction ahead of South Africa Test series

South Africa have been handed a massive blow ahead of the three-match Test series against India at home. Proteas fast bowler Anrich Nortje has been ruled out of the Test series owing to a persistent injury. The two sides are all set to lock horns in the series-opener of the three-match rubber from Sunday (December 26) at the SuperSport Park in Centurion.

Cricket South Africa on Tuesday confirmed that Nortje has failed to recover fully ahead of the start of the Test series and will not be taking part in the three-match rubber. His absence will be a huge blow for the hosts against a strong Indian side as Nortje was on top-notch form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 and the T20 World Cup 2021.

He has been one of the best fast bowlers for his country across formats over the last couple of years and was expected to continue his stellar run in the India Test series. In his absence, Kagiso Rabada will spearhead South Africa's pace attack also consisting of the likes of Lungi Ngidi and Duanne Olivier among others.

"He has unfortunately not recovered adequately for the expected Test match bowling loads and is currently consulting with specialists to manage and advise on his recovery. No replacement will be brought in," CSA said in a statement.

South Africa have been training ahead of the start of the three-match series and the Indian team also has hit the ground running in Centurion. The Indian players were spotted enjoying a quality practice session at the SuperSport Park on Monday under the watchful eyes of head coach Rahul Dravid.

South Africa's Quinton De Kock to miss final two Tests vs India due to paternity leave: Report

Cricket South Africa (CSA) and Koninklijke Nederlandse Cricket Bond (KNCB) have mutually agreed to defer the three-match ODI series which began on Friday. The decision comes as a result of mounting anxiety and concern on the side of the visiting team around travel bans and restrictions on flights from South Africa being imposed by several countries around the world including the United Kingdom (UK), European Union (EU) and the United States of America (USA).

These actions are a result of Thursday`s announcement by the National Department of Health of South Africa of a new variant of the COVID-19 virus discovered in the country.

CSA Acting CEO, Pholetsi Moseki said: "We are disappointed by the unfortunate situation we find ourselves in, but the comfort of all visiting teams must always be paramount. The mental well-being of players is one of CSA`s top priorities, and we respect our visitors` position and point of view."

"CSA and KNCB will get into discussions around possibly rescheduling the tour within this cycle of the ICC Future Tours Programme ending in 2023," he added.

Chairman of the KNCB Jurgen Delfos said: "We are saddened by these circumstances, but are grateful to Cricket South Africa for their assistance and understanding of our team`s position. It must be made clear that the concerns are strictly over travel issues and how soon the team can get home and have nothing to do with the integrity of the Bio-Secure Environment (BSE) that CSA has successfully hosted. Our team has been pleased with every aspect of the organisation of the tour and have been well treated by our hosts."

"We have been looking forward to this series against the Proteas for some time and are keen on returning to South Africa in the near future," he added.

The Netherlands team will remain in the BSE hotel until their return flights have been finalised with the support of key CSA BSE staff.

The squad also saw the return of Wayne Parnell and Khaya Zondo to the Proteas ODI set up. Parnell`s last appearance for the South Africa was against Pakistan in the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England, while Zondo`s was in 2018 against Zimbabwe in Paarl.

In September 2018, Parnell had signed a three-year Kolpak contract with Worcestershire, which precluded him from playing internationally. The Kolpak era ended when the UK left the European Union at the end of January 2020, which put players like Parnell back in the mix for South Africa - as long as they featured in the country`s domestic competitions.

Zubayr Hamza and Ryan Rickelton received maiden call-ups to the ODI squad, following consistently impressive performances in the Cricket South Africa (CSA) domestic scene. Other returns to the team include Janneman Malan, Kyle Verreynne, Daryn Dupavillon and Sisanda Magala.

"These selections are part of our strategy to give opportunities and reward the good work of players in our provincial system," said Convenor of selectors, Victor Mpitsang in a Cricket South Africa (CSA) release.

Keshav Maharaj to lead South Africa in ODI series against Netherlands

Unbeaten England will be looking to continue their winning run in the Super 12 when they lock horns with South Africa in their final group-stage clash in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 on Saturday (November 06). The match will be played at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium in Sharjah.

While England have already qualified for the semi-finals irrespective of the result of their game against South Africa, the Proteas are in a must-win situation. However, even a win might not guarantee South Africa the second spot in the Group 1 points table.

While Australia are currently sitting at the second spot with six points and a net run rate of +1.031 from four matches, South Africa have six points and a net run rate of +0.742 from as many games. Even a win might not be enough for South Africa if Australia beat West Indies in their final Super 12 clash as the net run rate will be too difficult to overtake.

Nonetheless, the Temba Bavuma-led side will hope to produce a clinical performance against Eoin Morgan's men and look to bring an end to their flawless unbeaten streak in the tournament. South African pacers have been in excellent form so far this T20 World Cup.

But they will be wary of the firepower in the England batting line-up. Jos Buttler smashed the only century of the tournament so far in England's last game against Sri Lanka and has been firing all cylinders. The likes of Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow and even skipper Morgan have been in great touch.

England vs South Africa, T20 World Cup 2021 match prediction:

England will start as favourites against the Proteas considering they have not lost a game so far in the T20 World Cup 2021. However, South Africa can spring a surprise if their pacers turn up in Sharjah. We are backing South Africa to give their all and win this to keep themselves in the race for semi-finals.
