She was 71 and survived by husband Rudraprasad Sengupta and daughter Sohini. 
 
According to her family, Sengupta was undergoing treatment at the private hospital for the last 24 days after being admitted there with renal problems.&nbsp;She died around 3 pm&nbsp;her daughter informed the media.&nbsp; 
 
She was a recipient of the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Award and was one of speraheads of well-known theatre group Nandikar along with her husband, the legendary Rudraprasad Sengupta and her daughter Sohini.&nbsp; 
 
She was cast by Satyajit Ray for the portrayal of the character Bimala in 'Ghare Baire', which was based on Rabindranath Tagore's eponymous novel.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Awardee had also consented for an untitled documentary film on various sides of his life film actor, stage actor, poet and little magazine editor and painter. Shooting for the docu had begun in the last week of September.

However, the literary part of the docu could not be shot as the date scheduled for it was October 7 but he was admitted to the hospital one day before it. 
 
"He was so agile and mentally alert on September 30. Legendary Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee’s health condition is deteriorating day by day. On Saturday, one of the doctors attending on him said Chatterjee's condition remained unchanged for the past 24 hours and his situation is really 'grave and critical'.

''He is on different life support systems ... It seems that our almost 40 days’ fight is not enough to make him well, '' he said. ''Let's all pray he gets better, but it seems unlikely he will have a favourable outcome. We have informed all the family members and with a saddened heart they have accepted that nothing less than miracle can get him out of this situation,'' the doctor said in a bulletin. As per the reports, the Dada Saheb Phalke awardee is on life support and his physiological system is also not responding. ''Despite all our efforts, his physiological system is not responding. It (Chatterjee’s condition) is worse than before. He has been put on all sorts of support and he is fighting for his life, '' he said. He was admitted to Kolkata hospital on October 6 after testing positive for Covid 19 over a month ago. A career spanning over five decades, Soumitra Chatterjee was unlike anyone else. The man who studied Bengali literature, started his career in All India Radio as an announcer before auteur Satyajit Ray cast him in his film 'Apur Sansar' (World Of Apu). Chatterjee and Ray collaborated in 14 films- all considered cult classics. But Chatterjee's fame and identity is not be limited to work he did with Ray. For he remained relevant through decades and delivered path-breaking performances in film after film, with directors ranging from Ray to Mrinal Sen to Tapan Sinha, Aparna Sen, Rituporno Ghosh and in recent years Kaushik Ganguly and Sujoy Ghosh. 
 
In almost every Bengali household in the country, love for this brilliant actor is passed down through generations. He may have been at the peak of his career in the 1960s and 1970s, but Chatterjee's roles, his films remained classics. He meant different things to different people. Film buffs and youth activists on Sunday joined a sit-in protest in Kolkata after director Anik Dutta`s film 'Bhobishyoter Bhoot' (Ghost of the Future) was withdrawn from almost all multiplexes and single screen theatres in West Bengal.

Not just fans, but several people from the Bengali film industry voiced their opposition to the move. Thespian Soumitra Chatterjee shot off a letter, calling the withdrawl of the film as `vindictive` and `undemocratic`, and a "fascist policy".

The film, a social and political satire that released to packed houses on Friday, was apparently taken off by the hall owners following "instructions from higher authorities", Dutta said.

"Still, I haven`t got any official communication` regarding the cancellation, all they (hall owners) said was that the instructions were from higher authorities. But I have received immense support and the film fraternity has shown great solidarity," said the director of the 2012 block buster 'Bhooter Bhobishyot' (Future of Ghosts).

The sit-in was organised by fans and Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) activists outside Star Theatre, one of the oldest commercial Bengali theatre.

Dutta read out the letter sent by the veteran actor during the protest. Expressing shock, Chatterjee said it was a `vindictive act` of the administration. He referred to the comment made by the director during the 24th Kolkata International Film Festival last November.

Dutta had then criticised the `excessive` use of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee`s posters in and around the film fest venues and argued that the film personalities should get more limelight during such events.

Chatterjee wondered if there will be `any platform in the country where people can express themselves freely` and whether film makers will be able to include any content with which the authorities do not agree.

"I strongly condemn such fascist policy even if they stay undercover," he wrote.

In his letter, Chatterjee hoped that all those responsible for taking off the film from the cinemas `will realise that it is an undemocratic act` and `protest against it`.

Other prominent film personalities from the Bengal film industry including director Srijit Mukherjee, actors Abir Chatterjee, Parambrata Chatterjee and others took to social media to speak in support of the director.&nbsp;

A release from the film`s production company said prior to its release, the State Intelligence Unit wrote to the producer Kalyanmoy Chatterjee seeking a private screening `on a priority basis`.

They asked for the screening in the light of information received that it may `hurt public sentiments which may lead to political law and order issues`.&nbsp; 
The producer had immediately replied that the film has been passed by the CBFC and asking for private screening was beyond the jurisdiction and legal competence of the police.

The team of 'Bhobishyoter Bhoot' got no further response till the film the released, the makers have claimed.&nbsp;

A release from the film`s production company said prior to its release, the State Intelligence Unit wrote to the producer Kalyanmoy Chatterjee seeking a private screening `on a priority basis`. They asked for the screening in the light of information received that it may `hurt public sentiments which may lead to political law and order issues`. The producer had immediately replied that the film has been passed by the CBFC and asking for private screening was beyond the jurisdiction and legal competence of the police. The team of 'Bhobishyoter Bhoot' got no further response till the film the released, the makers have claimed. (With agency inputs)

Veteran Bollywood actor Shatrughan Sinha, who had acted in Goutam Ghosh&#39;s Bengali film &quot;Antarjali Jatra&quot; in 1987, says one of his biggest career regrets is that he could not work in a Satyajit Ray film.

&quot;Few people know that I was supposed to do a film with Manikda (Satyajit Ray), but that did not happen. Soumitra Chatterjee would have been the other actor in that film,&quot; Sinha said at the 4th Kolkata Literature Festival, which is a part of the ongoing 41st International Kolkata Book Fair.

Motivating youngsters to never forsake their individuality and originality, Sinha said, &quot;Though I had been copied more in regional films, his style and manners, I have never ever copied anyone.&quot;

&quot;In this competitive world prove yourself to be better than the best and that was the spirit of my biography &#39;Anything But Khamosh&#39;.&quot;

&quot;From Patna to Pune, from Bihar to &#39;Jai Maharashtra&#39; I had become from zero to hero. From small roles to villains to major villain roles, from parallel (film) hero to blockbuster hero I have turned impossible into possible,&quot; Sinha said.
