Children as young as 7 are now being pulled into Russian President Vladimir Putin's drone war, according to reports. The same drones struck Kyiv again on Thursday (Aug 28), killing 23 people, including four children. According to reports, while the young ones are not flying drones in Ukraine yet, starting next year, Russian schools will teach drone piloting as part of the regular curriculum. And by ninth grade, they will be made to assemble combat drones used in strikes on Ukrainian cities.
Russia robbing kids of their childhood?
According to a Daily Beast report, while 7-year-olds are not directly involved in Russia's war on Ukraine, in a chilling escalation, they would be trained in school to be future drone pilots. Starting ninth grade, these children are being actively recruited into places like Alabuga Polytechnic College, where unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), aka combat drones used in strikes on Ukrainian cities, are being manufactured.
'Hell for children'
Conditions at Alabuga College, located 600 miles (965.61 km) west of Moscow, are grim. Parents online describe the factory-college as "hell for children," saying students are treated like parts of a machine rather than people. Students report bullying, abuse, and military-style discipline. One teenager, 17-year-old Denis from Sverdlovsk region, died by suicide after struggling through the program. Talking to Daily Beast, one young worker, identified only as Kate, said she was being reprogrammed into Putin's "unbreakable" part of Putin's war machine.Despite this, many teens keep showing up. The pay is huge by Russian standards — more than $700 a month — and propaganda wraps it all in patriotism. Advertisements promoting the college are another inducement that seems to be working particularly well with older children. In one of the video ads, a female robot with large breasts can be seen whispering to a teen worker seductively, "program me..."A 13-year-old from Ivanovo told reporters he'd be glad to build drones, arguing “better drones die and not people.”
Children as young as 7 to pilot drones
Putin has lowered the entry point from 10 years, insisting children as young as 7 should learn how to pilot, assemble, and design drones. He pitched it as both “useful” and a way to keep kids busy. “I am convinced that it will make the kids busy with something useful and interesting, distract them from things they should not be doing,” he explained.Meanwhile, Ukraine continues to face the deadly results. US President Donald Trump on Monday (Aug 25) said that he spoke again with Russian President Vladimir Putin, days after his Washington meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders. Trump was last known to have called Putin on August 18, during his White House talks with Zelensky and European counterparts. Asked by reporters if there had been further contact, Trump confirmed: “Yes, I have.” After his August 18 call, Trump announced that Putin had agreed to a direct meeting with Zelensky, but Moscow has since denied such plans. Pressed on why Putin was reluctant, Trump replied bluntly: “Because he doesn’t like him.”
Good conversation with Putin
When asked about how the latest bout of communication with Putin went, Trump told reporters, "Every conversation I have with him is a good conversation," but said that he was "very angry" about the fact that after good conversations, "a bomb is loaded up into Kyiv or someplace".Also read | Protecting Putin? Zelensky confirmed that he was 'ready' for a bilateral talk with Putin, but stayed firmly opposed to any calls for ceding any Ukrainian territory. Trump, who had earlier once bragged that he would settle the Russia-Ukraine conflict in one day, admitted yesterday in a press conference at the White House that it was far complex than he could comprehend. But he was hopeful of having an understanding within a week or two if there would be an end to the horrific war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had 3 jets for his delegates, which landed in Alaska on August 15 for the US-Russia summit. Each costs around $85,000 to be refuelled. Russian delegates were made to pay all the money in cash.

This comes hours before Zelensky is set to meet with Trump in Washington, marking his second visit to the Oval Office, where he engaged in a shouting match with the US president on his last visit. Earlier this month, Trump announced additional 25 per cent duties on India, on top of the initial 25 per cent tariffs imposed earlier, citing Russian oil purchases. The move has resulted in a strain between Washington and New Delhi, which is currently among the nations facing the highest rates of US tariffs. Following the Alaska Summit with Putin, the US president said that Russia lost its “oil client” – India, when asked if there was any economic side to his Russian counterpart agreeing to hold a meeting. Meanwhile, India said that it has not halted its oil purchase from Russia after Trump’s tariff threats and continues to buy over economic considerations.

Russia’s Putin dials up PM Modi ahead of Trump-Zelensky meeting, ‘share insights’ on Alaska summit

After his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, Vladimir Putin once again blamed the West for the war in Ukraine. The Russian president insisted the real issue, or the so-called 'root cause' lies in what he called the 'situation around Ukraine.' By this, he meant a long-running struggle over Russia’s security and its place in the world. Also read: How will the Ukraine war end? Here are the two possible futures after Trump-Putin summit
Balance of power at the centre
Putin said the root cause of the conflict was the collapse of what he views as a “fair balance in the security sphere in Europe and the world as a whole.” He said peace could only come if that balance is restored, with Russia treated as an equal to the United States and NATO. For the Kremlin, this means undoing the West’s dominance since the Soviet Union broke apart in 1991 during the Cold War.
Claiming Russia is the victim
Putin has repeatedly called the war a tragedy, saying Russians and Ukrainians “have the same roots.” He said he wanted it to end, but blamed the West for pushing Ukraine away from Russia. In his view, Russia is not the aggressor, instead, he portrays his country as a victim of Western bullying.
NATO expansion as the trigger
For years, Putin has said NATO’s growth in Eastern Europe is the main reason for the conflict. Countries such as Poland and Romania joined NATO after the Soviet Union collapsed. When Ukraine looked to follow the same path, Russia drew a red line. Western leaders rejected Moscow’s demands to stop NATO’s expansion, and soon after, Russia invaded.
A Cold War mindset
For Putin, the “root causes” are less about Ukraine itself and more about restoring Russia’s place as a global power, equal to the United States and respected in Europe. Putin's mindset is to restore Russia as one of two global superpowers and revive the Cold War order, where Moscow held sway over its neighbours and sat at the top table of world politics.
A gamble that has backfired
But instead of weakening NATO, Russia’s invasion has made it stronger. Finland and Sweden, once neutral, have now joined the alliance, bringing it even closer to Russia’s borders. What Putin sees as fixing an imbalance may have only deepened it.

Putin argued that the conflict started because the “balance of security” in Europe and beyond was broken after the Cold War. He said peace could only come if that balance is restored, with Russia treated as an equal to the United States and NATO.

Is 'western bullying' real reason for Ukraine war? Putin reveals 'root causes' behind Moscow's invasion of Kyiv

Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed to allow “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine from the United States as part of a potential peace deal during his summit with President Donald Trump, senior envoy Steve Witkoff told CNN. “We agreed to robust security guarantees that I would describe as game-changing,” Witkoff said, likening the arrangement to NATO’s Article 5 protection. He explained that this mechanism would offer Ukraine defence commitments similar to NATO’s collective security clause, without the country formally joining the alliance, a long-standing Russian red line. Also read: How will the Ukraine war end? Here are the two possible futures after Trump-Putin summit
How would the security guarantee work?
According to Witkoff, the deal would mean the United States and European partners could provide “Article 5-like language” to deter any future Russian aggression. “Putin has said that a red flag is NATO admission,” Witkoff told CNN. “Assuming that the Ukrainians could agree to that and could live with that… we were able to win the following concession that the United States could offer Article 5-like protection,” he added.Witkoff stressed that it was “the first time we had ever heard the Russians agree” to such a clause. He added that Putin had also accepted the idea of “legislative enshrinement” to guarantee Russia would not invade Ukraine or other European countries again.
What did Putin demand in return?
Despite the breakthrough, Putin reportedly repeated demands for territorial concessions. European officials said Trump told them afterwards that the Russian leader insisted Ukraine hand over the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. In exchange, Putin suggested he would freeze the front lines in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia and pledge not to launch further attacks. He also stuck to his condition that Ukraine scale back its military, abandon NATO ambitions and remain neutral, which he described as addressing the “root causes” of the war.
Why does this matter for a peace deal?
Witkoff said the talks made more progress than previous efforts, with Moscow showing “accommodation more than we’ve seen in the past, certainly more than we saw in the last administration.” “We are intent on trying to hammer out a peace deal that ends the fighting permanently very, very quickly. Quicker than a ceasefire,” he said. “We cut through all kinds of issues that would have to be discussed and agreed to during a ceasefire,” he added. So far, the Kremlin has not publicly responded to the Trump team’s description of the summit.

Putin reportedly agreed to US-backed “robust security guarantees” for Ukraine, similar to NATO’s Article 5, during talks with Trump, offering defence assurances without Ukraine formally joining the alliance.

Putin agreed to ‘NATO-style’ security guarantees for Ukraine? Top US envoy's 'game-changing' revelation ahead of Trump-Zelensky meet

Russian President Vladimir Putin was apparently extra cautious while taking the trip to Alaska. He did not want to leave any traces of his DNA behind, and so, his bodyguards collected his poo and brought it back to Russia. According to Express UK, as a web of security officers guarded Putin, one of the measures included carrying a "poop suitcase". Citing two veteran investigative journalists in the French publication Paris Match, it stated that members of the Russian president’s Federal Protection Service (FPS) were responsible for collecting his human waste, including his faeces. It was put in special bags, which were then placed inside the briefcase brought along for his Alaska trip for this specific purpose. The journalists who made the claim added that this has been a regular practice for years during Putin's foreign trips. This includes his visit to France in May 2017. US President Donald Trump on Sunday (Aug 17) told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to come to the negotiating table without the dream of "getting back" Crimea or "going into NATO". Trump, in a post on Truth Social, said that Zelensky can end the three-and-a-half-year-old conflict with Russia "almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight". "Some things never change," he insisted ahead of the Ukrainian president's Washington visit. Russian President Vladimir Putin made concessions on his long-standing demand for Ukrainian “land swaps” during his summit with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, according to Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff. ‘Ready to work towards trilateral summit’: European leaders back Trump’s plan for talks between US, Russia, Ukraine

First Lady Melania Trump, in a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, told him, "you can singlehandedly restore" the "melodic laughter" caught in the throes of the Russia-Ukraine war. In a deeply moving letter hand-delivered to Putin by her husband, US President Donald Trump, Melania urged for peace. On Friday (Aug 15) it was revealed that Donald Trump has delivered a letter from his wife, Melania, to his Russian counterpart. While it was known that the letter had to do with the children in Ukraine and Russia, the exact content of the letter was not public knowledge…till now. The letter was released on X by Attorney General Pam Bondi. Here's what it said.
What did First Lady Melania Trump say to Putin?
The First Lady of the United States (FLOTUS) in an emotional letter urged Putin to bring peace amid the Russia-Ukraine war. They dream of love, possibility, and safety from danger.""As parents, it is our duty to nurture the next generation's hope. As leaders, the responsibility to sustain our children extends beyond the comfort of a few," said the FLOTUS. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday (Aug 16) accused Russia of complicating peace efforts by refusing to agree to a ceasefire, more than three years into the conflict. "We see that Russia rebuffs numerous calls for a ceasefire and has not yet determined when it will stop the killing. This complicates the situation," Zelensky said in a social media post. Melania Trump sent Putin letter on Ukraine’s ‘stolen children’ during Alaska summit. What did she say? All we know

Russian President Vladimir Putin, after his meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska, said on Friday (Aug 15) that the conflict in Ukraine would not have started if Trump had been the President of the United States in 2022. He made the remarks at the joint press conference following the two leaders held talks on the war in Ukraine. This echoes the US president’s claim that he would have prevented the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which started during the term of former president Joe Biden. Following the meeting in Alaska, Putin said that he had tried to convince Biden not to make the situation escalate to a point of “serious consequences in the form of military actions.” “I would like to remind you, that in 2022, during our last contact with the previous administration, I tried to convince my previous American colleague, the situation should not be brought to the point of no return when it would come to hostilities, and I said it quite directly back then, that it was a big mistake,” he said. Reiterating the US president’s claim that there would have been no war if Trump were the president, Putin said, “When President Trump is saying that if he was the president back then, there will be no war — and I’m quite sure that it would indeed be, so I can confirm that.” He added, “President Trump and I established a very good, businesslike and trusting contact. And I have every reason to believe that by moving along this path, we can reach - and the sooner, the better - the end of the conflict in Ukraine.” Thanking Trump for his cooperation and “friendly tone of conversation,” the Russian president said that the past had been difficult for US-Russia relations, adding that it was necessary to “rectify the situation.” Putin further said that the next meeting would take place in Moscow, adding, “We hope that Kyiv and the European capitals will perceive all of this in a constructive manner and will not create any obstacles or attempt to disrupt the nascent progress through provocation or behind-the-scenes intrigue.” The statement was echoed by Trump, who said the two leaders had a “very productive meeting,” which lasted about three hours. While no deal on a ceasefire in Ukraine was reached during the talks, Trump said “many, many points” were agreed on, with only a few major sticking points remaining. He added that he would call NATO and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to brief them on what was discussed in the meeting.

‘If Trump were president, there’d be no war’: Putin echoes POTUS’s claim, slams Biden after Alaska meet

The much-hyped Alaska meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin concluded with no ceasefire, no agreement, and no concrete pathway toward ending the Russia–Ukraine war. For all the showmanship—a warm tarmac greeting, twin handshakes, and a joint limo ride—the summit produced little more than vague assurances, cryptic references to “progress,” and a reminder that when it comes to this war, “there’s no deal until there’s a deal.”
Outcome: All Optics, No Substance
After nearly three hours behind closed doors, Trump conceded, “We didn’t get there,” before exiting without taking questions. His earlier claim that there was only a “25% chance” of failure now looks like a self-inflicted blow to his credibility as a self-styled peacemaker and dealmaker. Putin described himself as “sincerely interested” in ending what he called a “tragedy,” but offered no specifics. He warned against “sabotage” by Ukraine and Europe and insisted that “primary causes” of the conflict must be addressed—Kremlin code for its longstanding demands on arresting NATO expansion and ensuring territorial recognition of the territory gained. Apparently, Putin did not compromise on any of his demands, handled Trump with his vast diplomatic experience, leaving a window for further talks. Trump, for his part, said “many points were agreed to” but admitted that “one significant” disagreement remained, without disclosing what it was. His pledge to call Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders “soon” was small consolation to Kyiv, which had been excluded from the talks. Putin’s parting words—“Next time in Moscow”—hinted at a possible sequel, but there’s no sign of a trilateral summit involving Ukraine.
War Aims and Strategic Calculus
Russia’s goals have been consistent since the beginning and were not compromised, namely: solidify territorial control over captured regions, prevent NATO’s eastward expansion, no NATO membership for Ukraine, no militarisation of Ukraine and secure sanctions relief. The Alaska summit was an opportunity to appear diplomatic without making binding concessions. Kyiv insisted on restoring territorial integrity and rejecting any “land-for-peace” swaps. Zelensky will find some consolation there as his land was not swapped, although no agreement on ceasefire will not reduce his pain.Trump sought a personal win—a headline-grabbing breakthrough he could sell at home. The optics were managed to portray warmth and progress, but in substance, he leaves Alaska with neither a deal nor increased diplomatic leverage.
Pre-Negotiation Positions
Russia entered willing to talk ceasefire terms, but only under conditions preserving military gains. It exhibited strategic maturity by not responding to President Trump’s rhetoric of ‘Severe Consequences if no ceasefire’ but stuck to its position. Ukraine was opposed to any talks that exclude Kyiv and refused concessions on sovereignty and territorial integrity, which made the ceasefire prospects near impossible. US pursued exploratory diplomacy, with Trump hinting at creative solutions—including unspecified compromises—that alarmed some allies. During pre-negotiation stage Trump’s stance was inconsistent between pragmatism, rhetoric, influence of US deep state and last day pressure from European counterparts and Ukraine. Putin thus entered the negotiations from position of strength with clarity on outcome.
Implications of Failure
For Ukraine, the inconclusive outcome is a mixed blessing—no dangerous unilateral deal, but also no relief from daily shelling. For Russia, the meeting offered propaganda value: Putin stood beside the US president as an equal, reinforcing his legitimacy on the world stage. For Trump, the optics of coming home empty-handed after promising a breakthrough will sting. The “25% failure” threshold he set has become a self-own, inviting criticism from both allies and adversaries. Internationally, the summit leaves the war right where it was—grinding on in the trenches—while signalling that Washington is willing to engage Moscow directly, even without Ukraine in the room. That precedent could shape future diplomacy in ways that European members of NATO and Kyiv may find troubling.
What’s Next?
The Summit outcome doesn’t stop Putin from continuing Russian aggression to improve ground position in his favour. Outcome could see intermittent back-channel talks, and another high-profile but low-yield summit. The absence of a flawed deal could keep NATO unity intact with renewed pressure on sanctions and tariffs. The risk remains that repeated summits without progress may erode US credibility and give Moscow breathing space to regroup militarily. The dissatisfied NATO and Ukraine will expect President Trump to act on secondary tariffs, sanctions and military support to Ukraine, but that might jeopardise any undeclared gains in the Alaska Summit for President Trump, if there are any. Putin’s confidence in this summit is a direct reflection of his strong position on the battlefield, which gives him more leverage than NATO. Ukraine or Europe don’t hold any card to dictate terms to Russia and their position is unlikely to change without full support of USA.
Conclusion
The Alaska summit was billed as a possible turning point in the Russia–Ukraine war; instead, it was a carefully choreographed non-event. Trump’s showmanship produced good optics but no substance, Putin pocketed the legitimacy boost without paying in concessions, and Ukraine was left to watch from the side-lines. In diplomacy, sometimes no deal is better than a bad one—but for battered Ukraine, “no deal” also means no relief. The danger now is that repeated inconclusive engagements will normalize a frozen conflict, giving Moscow an edge earned by battlefield successes. For countries affected by secondary tariffs/sanctions the risk remains!
