Azerbaijan said on Monday (December 30) that Moscow has assured it will hold those responsible for the Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash accountable.&nbsp;
The plane, which Azerbaijan claims was hit by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/azerbaijan-airlines-suspended-flights-to-seven-russian-cities-following-the-crash-8570811">Russian air defences</a>, crash-landed in Kazakhstan on December 25, causing the deaths of 38 out of the 67 passengers onboard.

In a statement, Azerbaijan's General Prosecutor said that the head of Russia's Investigative Committee had told Baku, "Intensive measures are being carried out to identify the guilty people and bring them to criminal responsibility."
Russia has launched a criminal investigation into the incident but has not confirmed that the plane was struck by its air-defence system.
<h2>'Russian side wanted to cover up the issue': Azeri prez</h2>
On Sunday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev demanded that Russia admit shooting at the passenger jet. He accused Moscow of trying to hide the true cause of the fatal crash. Speaking on state television, Aliyev said: "The facts are that the Azerbaijani civilian plane was damaged from the outside over Russian territory, near the city of Grozny, and almost lost control."

He added, "We also know that electronic warfare systems put our plane out of control... At the same time, as a result of fire from the ground, the tail of the plane was also severely damaged."
While Aliyev said that the plane was hit unintentionally, he criticised <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/russia-not-satisfied-with-us-president-elect-trumps-nato-freeze-and-peacekeeper-plan-for-ukraine-report-8576040">Russia</a> for allegedly trying to hide the details of the crash. He described Moscow's response as "regrettable and surprising," adding that it "clearly showed the Russian side wanted to cover up the issue".&nbsp;
&ldquo;For the first three days, we heard nothing from Russia except some absurd theories,&rdquo; Aliyev said.
The Kremlin said on Saturday that Russian President Vladimir Putin had apologised to Azerbaijan during a phone conversation about the "tragic incident." Putin accepted that Russian air defences were active in Grozny on December 25, when the Azerbaijan Airlines jet attempted to land before diverting.
However, the Kremlin's statement did not admit Russia&rsquo;s fault. Later that day, Putin called for a "transparent" investigation into the crash.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held his annual end-of-year press conference in Moscow on Thursday (December 19). Known for covering various issues during these marathon events, Putin spoke on the economy, and the war in Ukraine.
Talking about US-president elect Donald Trump, Putin said that he hasn't spoken to him in over four years and is not sure when he will meet or speak with him next. "I am ready to meet him if he wants it," he said.
Addressing a question about Syria's former president, Bashar al-Assad, Putin said that he hasn't "seen President Assad yet" - but plans to do so. "And I will have a conversation with him. We're adults. We understand," Putin said.
<h2>Russia’s economy remains a focus</h2>
Putin began by discussing the state of the Russian economy, saying, "Everything stands and falls with the economy." Despite inflation running at 9.3%, he claimed the Russian economy is performing well, pointing to growth in wages and real disposable income.

However, he acknowledged challenges, with inflation being a major concern. "Inflation, however, is a worrying sign," he said, though he described the situation overall as "stable." He also mentioned that the unemployment rate was record-low at 2.3%.
When asked how the economy continues to function amid challenges, Putin said, "When everything is stable, we are bored, but when something major happens, when bullets are flying around — we are scared."
<h2>Putin on the war in Ukraine: “Victory is nearer”</h2>
On the war in Ukraine, referred to by the Kremlin as a "special military operation", Putin was asked if victory was closer. In response, he had two individuals hold up a banner behind him, reportedly signed by a Russian marine brigade.
He said that the situation in Ukraine is "changing drastically" and claimed Russian forces are "regaining territory" daily. "Warfare is complicated," he said, "but we are getting closer to solving our primary tasks of the special operation."
Putin said he could not predict when his forces would regain full control of the western Kursk region, the area where Ukraine launched a shock offensive in August. "We will absolutely kick them out. Absolutely. It can't be any other way. But the question of a specific date, I'm sorry, I cannot say right now," he said.

Putin also addressed questions from the audience regarding the rebuilding of areas affected by fighting. Viewers asked when the region (Kursk) would be "liberated," when residents could return, and whether infrastructure and homes would be reconstructed.
"It makes no military sense for Ukraine to enter the Kursk region," he said, adding, "For sure, we will get rid of them." However, he avoided giving a specific timeline, adding that announcing a date could pressure troops to take unnecessary risks.
He told the audience that once the situation stabilises, all infrastructure, including schools, kindergartens, and roads, would be rebuilt. "There is no shadow of a doubt about it," Putin said, adding that citizens who lost homes during the fighting would receive compensation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin apologised to former German chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday, saying he did not mean to scare her when he brought his pet Labrador to a meeting with her in 2007.

Merkel, who has a well-documented fear of animals, recalled the tense encounter in her memoir released Tuesday, accusing Putin of inviting the pet as a "demonstration of power" and taking glee in her discomfort.

"I did not know that she was afraid of dogs," the Kremlin chief said Thursday at a press conference in the Kazakh capital Astana.

"I once again appeal to her via the media and say: 'Angela, please forgive me, I did not want to cause you any heartache.' On the contrary, I wanted to create a favourable atmosphere for our conversation," he added.

"If you ever -- I realise it is unlikely -- come again, I will not do it under any circumstances," Putin said.

Images from their 2007 meeting in the Russian city of Sochi showed Putin's black Labrador Retriever Konni sniffing around while the German leader sat in her chair, smiling nervously.

Putin denies intentionally scaring Merkel with dog in 2007, seeks forgiveness

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday urged Russian President Vladimir&nbsp;Putin&nbsp;to engage in peace talks with Ukraine, in the first call between the leaders in almost two years.

In the call, Scholz "condemned Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine and called on President&nbsp;Putin&nbsp;to end it and withdraw troops", the chancellor's spokesman Steffen Hebestreit said.

The German leader "urged Russia to show willingness to negotiate with Ukraine with the aim of achieving a just and lasting peace", Hebestreit added in a statement.

Scholz also stressed "Germany's unwavering determination to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression for as long as necessary".

The call comes at a crucial juncture in the war. Ukrainian troops are coming under pressure and the election of Donald Trump in the United States has cast doubt over Washington's continued support for Kyiv.

The call between the two leaders was the first time they have been in contact since December 2022. The conversation lasted "for an hour", a German government source told AFP.

Scholz "particularly condemned the Russian air strikes against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine", said a government source.

"He made it clear that sending North Korean soldiers to Russia for combat missions against Ukraine would lead to a serious escalation and expansion of the conflict," the source added.

The Kremlin, in its readout of the conversation, said the two leaders had had a "frank exchange of views", adding that the call had been initiated by Germany.

"Possible agreements should take into account the security interests of the Russian Federation, proceed from the new territorial realities and, most importantly, address the root causes of the conflict," the Kremlin added.

<h2>Limited contact</h2>

Before picking up the phone to&nbsp;Putin, Scholz spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Hebestreit said.&nbsp;

The German and Ukrainian leaders spoke "beforehand and will do so again after the conversation with the Russian president", the spokesman said.

Launched in February 2022, Russia's full-scale of invasion of Ukraine is headed into its third winter, with Kyiv's troops increasingly on the back foot.&nbsp;

Germany has been one of Ukraine's biggest military supporters, second only to the United States in the aid it has sent to Kyiv.&nbsp;

But the election of Trump, who criticised aid to Ukraine on the campaign trail, has called into question Washington's continued support.

Scholz's December 2022 call with&nbsp;Putin&nbsp;was the last known phone call between the Kremlin chief and the leader of a major Western country.

Putin&nbsp;has not spoken to most NATO and Western leaders since 2022, when the EU and the US imposed massive sanctions on Russia for launching its shock Ukraine offensive.

Within the NATO bloc,&nbsp;Putin&nbsp;maintains contact with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban –&nbsp;who is critical of Western policy on Russia –&nbsp;and with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Putin&nbsp;has not met other Western leaders in person since days before launching the offensive in February 2022, when a flurry of Western officials visited Moscow in a bid to deter the Kremlin chief from attacking Ukraine.

He will skip a meeting of G20 leaders in Brazil next week, which Scholz will attend, on the grounds that his presence would "wreck" the gathering.

Putin&nbsp;denied an International Criminal Court warrant out against him, for Russia's actions in Ukraine, was a factor in his decision to steer clear of the summit, where Moscow will be represented by Russia's foreign minister.

The German and Russian leaders "agreed to remain in contact", the German government source added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is to meet Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian for talks Friday at a forum in the Central Asian country of Turkmenistan, a senior aide said Monday. Yury Ushakov, Putin's aide on foreign policy, told journalists the leaders will meet in Ashgabat while attending an event celebrating a Turkmen poet. "This meeting has great significance both for discussing bilateral issues as well as, of course, discussing the sharply escalated situation in the Middle East," Ushakov said. Leaders of Central Asian countries are meeting to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the birth of 18th-century poet Magtymguly Pyragy. Putin's attendance had not been previously announced. Putin to meet Iran’s president in Turkmenistan for crucial talks on Middle East unrest

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday (Jul 16) was seen driving a new car without wearing a bulletproof vest, which left many concerned about his safety after the&nbsp;assassination attempt on ex-US president Donald Trump.&nbsp;

People have raised concerns on social media forums regarding the safety of world leaders after Trump was hit in the ear by a gunman at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.&nbsp;

The 71-year-old Putin was also seen almost causing a car crash as he apparently made a mistake while&nbsp;driving the Lada Aura car as he was trying to boost sales of the Russian-made vehicle. The video showed that Putin failed to indicate 'right'. Hence, the vehicle of his security team had to slow down to avoid a crash.&nbsp;

A video shared on social media showed the Russian president surrounded by a total of seven security guards reportedly on the M-11 highway, which connects Moscow and St Petersburg.&nbsp;

However, users noticed that Putin donned a white shirt, but was not wearing a bulletproof vest.&nbsp;&nbsp;

This comes after calls for Putin to cancel further trips abroad due to a possible assassination attempt, similar to that on&nbsp;Trump. A senior official from the Russian foreign ministry Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine of working on the assassination of Putin.&nbsp;

Putin was asked by reporters what he thought about the car, and Putin said he was quite satisfied with it.&nbsp;

While speaking during the event, Putin said that the Russian state-owned Avtodor company in charge of road construction and management is actively involved in rebuilding the transport infrastructure of Russia-controlled areas in Ukraine, including the Donbas, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.

<h2>Kremlin on Trump assassination bid&nbsp;</h2>

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded to the attack on Trump, saying that Russia strongly condemned any violence in the context of politics.&nbsp;

The Kremlin "strongly condemns any example of violence in the context of political competition", Peskov said in a telephone press conference.&nbsp;

He expressed Russia's "condolences" to "the family of the victim killed in this attack" and wished those injured a speedy recovery.&nbsp;

Both Peskov and Russia's foreign ministry said the attack was predictable. "After numerous attempts to eliminate candidate Trump from the political arena using first all legal tools -- courts, prosecutors, attempts of political discrediting -- it is obvious to all outside observers that his life is in danger," Peskov said, adding however that "we do not at all believe that the attempt was organised by the current power".&nbsp;

PM Modi to visit key partner Russia on July 8-9, set to hold 22nd bilateral annual summit

President Vladimir Putin reached&nbsp;North Korea on Wednesday&nbsp;(Jun 19), after&nbsp;stopping over&nbsp;at&nbsp;Russia's far eastern region of Sakha&nbsp;for a few hours, making the first trip to the country by a Russian leader in 24 years.&nbsp;

Ahead of his rare visit to Pyongyang, Putin hailed North Korea for “firmly supporting” Moscow’s war in Ukraine and also promised to build trade and security systems which are not controlled by the West.&nbsp;

<h2>Putin thanks North Korea for support</h2>

In a letter published by North Korean state media, the Russian president pledged his unwavering support for North Korea.&nbsp;

Putin&nbsp;landed on Wednesday&nbsp;morning for his two-day visit to the isolated nation in 24 years amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine as well as the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/multiple-north-korean-soldiers-injured-after-they-cross-the-dmz-732724">confrontation between North and South Korean troops</a> on their shared border.&nbsp;

The Russian president also highlighted that the two nations have developed good relations and partnerships over the past seven decades based on equality, mutual respect and trust.

He also thanked North Korea for supporting what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine despite “U.S. pressure, blackmail and military threats”.&nbsp;

“We highly appreciate that the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) is firmly supporting the special military operations of Russia being conducted in Ukraine,” Putin wrote in the article, referring to North Korea by its official name.&nbsp;

He added that Russia and the North are “now actively developing the many-sided partnership”.&nbsp;

<h2>Putin vows trade, security&nbsp;</h2>

Ahead of Putin’s visit, Russian foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said Moscow and Pyongyang may sign a partnership agreement which would include security issues.

In his letter, Putin said Russia and North Korea will develop trade and payment systems “that are not controlled by the West”.&nbsp;

The two countries, the Russian president wrote, will also jointly oppose sanctions which he described as “unilateral and illegal restrictive measures” against their nations.&nbsp;

President Vladimir Putin reached North Korea on Wednesday (Jun 19), after stopping over at Russia's far eastern region of Sakha for a few hours, making the first trip to the country by a Russian leader in 24 years. Ahead of his rare visit to Pyongyang, Putin hailed North Korea for “firmly supporting” Moscow’s war in Ukraine and also promised to build trade and security systems which are not controlled by the West. Putin thanks North Korea for support In a letter published by North Korean state media, the Russian president pledged his unwavering support for North Korea. Putin landed on Wednesday morning for his two-day visit to the isolated nation in 24 years amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine as well as the confrontation between North and South Korean troops on their shared border. Watch this report: The Russian president also highlighted that the two nations have developed good relations and partnerships over the past seven decades based on equality, mutual respect and trust. He also thanked North Korea for supporting what Moscow calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine despite “U.S. pressure, blackmail and military threats”. “We highly appreciate that the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) is firmly supporting the special military operations of Russia being conducted in Ukraine,” Putin wrote in the article, referring to North Korea by its official name. He added that Russia and the North are “now actively developing the many-sided partnership”. Putin vows trade, security Ahead of Putin’s visit, Russian foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said Moscow and Pyongyang may sign a partnership agreement which would include security issues. In his letter, Putin said Russia and North Korea will develop trade and payment systems “that are not controlled by the West”. The two countries, the Russian president wrote, will also jointly oppose sanctions which he described as “unilateral and illegal restrictive measures” against their nations. Putin signs new strategic treaty with N Korea, invites Kim to visit Moscow

Russia on Tuesday (May 21) announced that its forces have started the first stage of exercises near Ukraine ordered by President Vladimir Putin to simulate preparation for the launch of tactical nuclear weapons, in what Moscow said was a response to Western “threats”.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia begins drills</h2>

Amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, Moscow has repeatedly made veiled threats to use nuclear weapons and boasted about the readiness of its arsenal if it senses an existential threat.

Russia has linked the recent drills to what it calls “militant statements” by Western officials, including the remarks made by French President Emmanuel Macron who floated the possibility of sending European troops to fight Moscow in Ukraine.&nbsp;

The Russian defence ministry said that the drills are taking place in the Southern Military District, which borders and includes parts of Ukraine that Moscow has claimed to annex amid the ongoing war. However, the specific location of the drills remained unclear.&nbsp;

A report by Reuters citing nuclear analysts said that the exercises are designed as a warning signal by Putin to deter the West from getting more involved in the war in Ukraine.&nbsp;

The drills are designed to test “the readiness of personnel and equipment of non-strategic nuclear weapons combat units to respond and to unconditionally ensure the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Russian state,” said the Russian defence ministry.&nbsp;

It added that they were a “response to provocative statements and threats by certain Western officials.”&nbsp;

The ministry also said that the first stage of the drills involved Iskander and Kinzhal missiles. The exercise also involves Belarus, where Russia said that it had deployed tactical nuclear weapons last year, a development that both Minsk and Moscow confirmed.&nbsp;

<h2>What were the ‘militant statements’?</h2>

Russian officials pointed to statements by the French president about NATO countries not ruling out the possibility of deploying troops to Ukraine as well as a statement by British Foreign Minister David Cameron who said Kyiv had the right to use weapons provided by the United Kingdom to strike targets inside the Russian territory.

Russia also cited the provision of long-range British, French and United States ATACMS missiles to Kyiv.

“The exercises are, obviously, a signal in response to discussion of NATO countries’ troops in Ukraine. The most important features are advance announcement and visibility,” Nikolai Sokov, a former Soviet and Russian arms control official, told Reuters.

He also said that the Western militaries will be watching the drills closely in an attempt to draw conclusions about how much warning time they would have before Russia deploys them for real, he added.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, the Russian foreign ministry had said that the drills should send a “sobering signal” to the West and its “puppets” in Ukraine.

The head of personnel at Russia's Defence Ministry has been arrested on suspicion of bribery after more than $1 million in cash and valuables were discovered at his properties, investigators said on Tuesday.

The arrest of Yuri Kuznetsov signals a widening of the biggest government corruption scandal in years, two days after President Vladimir Putin unexpectedly removed Sergei Shoigu from the post of defence minister.

The state Investigative Committee said Kuznetsov was suspected of "receiving a bribe on an especially large scale".

"According to the investigation, in 2021–2023, as the head of the 8th Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Kuznetsov received a bribe from representatives of commercial structures for performing certain actions in their favour," the committee said.

At least five people have been arrested in the scandal, starting with the detention of deputy minister Timur Ivanov on the same charge on April 23.

Shoigu was unexpectedly removed from his job on Sunday and assigned to a new role as secretary of Russia's Security Council. He is to be replaced by Andrei Belousov, an economist and former deputy prime minister.

Putin's appointment of Belousov, who has no military background, is seen by analysts as part of a strategy to improve the efficiency of Russia's war economy as its army seeks to push further into Ukraine in the third year of the war.

Judging by the arrests, the strategy includes rooting out corruption in the awarding of huge military contracts.

Unconfirmed reports by two of Russia's influential war bloggers said two more deputy defence ministers had resigned before Shoigu's departure.

<h2>CASH, GOLD AND WATCHES</h2>

Investigators said searches at Kuznetsov's properties uncovered the equivalent of more than $1 million in roubles and foreign currency, as well as gold coins, watches and luxury items.

Kuznetsov could not be reached for comment. The charges against him and Ivanov, the former deputy minister, carry a jail term of up to 15 years.

Ivanov denies accusations that he received bribes worth $11 million in the form of property services from a construction company in return for contracts.

A Moscow court last week rejected appeals by Ivanov and his friend Sergei Borodin, who is also charged with conspiring to take bribes, against their detention.

The other men arrested were Alexander Fomin, co-founder of a construction company that allegedly provided the bribes, and Anton Filatov, former head of several companies subordinate to the defence ministry, who is suspected of large-scale embezzlement.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday (May 12) replaced Sergey Shoigu as Defence Minister with Andrey Belousov proposed to take charge, Russian media reported.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday (May 12) replaced Sergey Shoigu as Defence Minister with Andrey Belousov proposed to take charge, Russian media reported. Following Putin's inauguration as president for a fifth term last week, a Cabinet reshuffle was on the cards. While several officials were expected to stay put, Shoigu’s fate hung in the balance. Belousov has previously served as Russia's first deputy prime minister. A report by the TASS news agency said that Shoigu has been appointed Secretary of the Security Council, replacing Nikolay Patrushev. Shoigu has been serving as the defence minister since 2012. Addressing a press conference, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that the decision to appoint Belousov as the defence minister was linked to the need to "making the economy of the security bloc part of the country’s economy." The TASS report said that other heads of security ministries and services, as well as Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, will retain their posts in the government. An appointment that shocked many The appointment of the former deputy PM has shocked many as he has no military background, but Belousov has been one of Putin’s most influential economic advisors over the last decade. He added that it meant that it was “extremely important” to ensure such spending aligned with the country’s overall interests, which is why the Russian president wanted a civilian with an economics background as the defence minister. “Today on the battlefield, the winner is the one who is more open to innovation,” said Peskov. A specialist in economics Belousov, 65, graduated from the Faculty of Economics of the Moscow State University in 1981 with distinction. In 2000, he was appointed a non-staff adviser to the Russian prime minister and joined the economy ministry as deputy minister six years later. Between 2008 and 2012, he was director of the Department for Economics and Finance in the government apparatus, the same years Putin served as prime minister. Sergey Shoigu sacked as Russian defence minister as Putin begins fifth term

Vladimir Putin is set to be sworn in for his fifth term as Russia's president on Tuesday (May 7) during an inauguration ceremony in Moscow.

Putin, who won 87 per cent of the vote in the March presidential election, will officially begin another six-year term in office at the Kremlin ceremony. Following the inauguration, the current Russian government will resign, making way for a new government approved by the nation's parliament through a constitutional amendment passed in 2020.

According to the Anadolu news agency, Putin will present his choice for prime minister to the Russian State Duma, the country's lower house of parliament, for confirmation.

While the parliament has the authority to accept or decline the nominee, if lawmakers reject the candidate three times, Putin can appoint the prime minister directly without requiring parliamentary approval.

Subsequently, Putin can call for new parliamentary elections and dissolve the current legislature.

Reports from local media suggest that Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, who has overseen economic growth amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and subsequent Western economic sanctions, is likely to be reappointed.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un took his first ride in the&nbsp;Russian-made high-end luxury car that was gifted by President Vladimir Putin, said Kim’s sister, on Saturday (Mar 16) as she hailed the deepening bilateral ties between Moscow and Pyongyang.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Clear proof’</h2>

In February, Putin gifted a high-end Aurus Senat limousine made in Russia, which he had shown the North Korean leader when they met for a summit back in September. It was the first meeting between the two leaders in four years.&nbsp;

The gift has violated multiple United Nations sanctions imposed on North Korea over its nuclear and other weapons programmes by their leader. As a part of the sanctions, which were passed years ago with Russia’s approval, the import of any luxury goods or vehicles is banned into the country.

Kim used the limousine for the first time during an open event on Friday (Mar 15), said his sister and prominent government official Kim Yo Jong, according to a statement carried by the North Korean state media.&nbsp;

“The special function of the private car is perfect and can be thoroughly trusted,” said Kim Yo Jong, as quoted by the KCNA, without specifying any particular function of the vehicle that she was referring to.&nbsp;

Aurus was the first Russian luxury car brand, according to Russian media reports, and has been used in motorcades of top officials since Putin first used the vehicle during his inauguration ceremony in 2018.

Navalny had called for the “Noon against Putin” protest by asking all Russians to turn out to vote at the same time.&nbsp;

“People will thus fulfil the last will of Alexei Navalny, so this is very important. Do it. And in the time remaining before the election, convince as many people as possible to do this,” said Navalny’s ally.&nbsp;

Ahead of the Russian presidential elections, experts said independent monitoring of the balloting will be difficult since the voting is expected to take place between March 15 and 17. Additionally, an online voting system will be in place in many regions.

One of the most prominent jailed Russian opposition politicians, Ilya Yashin, on Tuesday (Feb 20) said that he vows to continue fighting for democracy in Russia after learning about the death of his friend and colleague Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny. He also accused President Vladimir Putin of killing Navalny while acknowledging that his life was also in the Russian leader’s hands.

“As long as my heart beats in my chest, I will fight tyranny. As long as I live, I will fear no evil,” Yashin said in a post on social media, communicated through his lawyer. He added, “Of course, I understand the risks I face. I’m behind bars. My life is in Putin’s hands and it’s in danger.”

Yashin was an ally of Navalny and close to former Prime Minister Boris Nemtsov who was shot dead near the Kremlin while walking home across the Moscow bridge in 2015. The 55-year-old was a vocal critic of Putin’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.&nbsp;

“We shared a common cause and dedicated our lives to making Russia peaceful, free and happy. Now both my friends are dead,” said Yashin.&nbsp;

Navalny’s death has sparked outrage across the world and raised fears for his allies, some of whom are imprisoned. Yashin learned about his friend and ally’s death in his prison near Smolensk in western Russia where he is serving his eight-and-a-half years sentence.&nbsp;

“In Putin’s understanding, this is how power is asserted – through murder, cruelty and demonstrative revenge,” said Yashin blaming Navalny’s death on the Kremlin.&nbsp;

The Kremlin, on Tuesday (Feb 6) confirmed that Tucker Carlson has been granted permission to interview Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, Moscow rejected the former Fox News anchor’s claims that he was the only one among Western media figures trying to interview the Russian president amid the ongoing war.&nbsp;

<h2>‘One-sided’</h2>

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin had agreed to the Carlson interview because the former Fox News host’s approach differs from the “one-sided” reporting of the Ukraine war by many Western news outlets.&nbsp;

After weeks of speculation and media reports, Carlson on Tuesday (Feb 6) confirmed he will be interviewing Putin saying that everything got finalised after months of planning. “There are risks to doing an interview like this, obviously, so we’ve thought about it over many months,” he said.&nbsp;

This interview would mark the first time that the Russian president would talk to a Western journalist one-on-one since launching its invasion of Ukraine or what Moscow calls its “special military operation”.&nbsp;

Kremlin said that in a four-minute promoting the expected interview, Carlson falsely asserted that he was the only one among the Western media trying to interview Putin. The former Fox News host claimed that “not a single Western journalist has bothered to interview” the Russian president during the Ukraine war.

This claim was not only rejected by several American journalists and prominent networks in the US but also by the Kremlin spokesperson.&nbsp;

“Mr. Carlson is not correct, but he couldn’t have known that. We receive a lot of requests for interviews with the president,” said Peskov, during his daily briefing on Wednesday.&nbsp;

“When it comes to the countries of the collective West, the large network media, TV channels, (and) large newspapers can in no way boast of even trying to at least look impartial in terms of coverage,” he added. &nbsp;

The Russian president has “no desire to communicate with such media” because it’s “unlikely that there can be any benefit from this,” said the Kremlin spokesperson.&nbsp;

Peskov, on Tuesday, was also directly asked why Carlson was chosen to interview Putin to which he said the former Fox News host’s approach was “in no way pro-Russian, it is not pro-Ukrainian - it is pro-American”.&nbsp;

‘Carlson is wrong’: Kremlin denies Tucker’s claim that only he sought Putin interview amid Ukraine war

During an address on the eve of Orthodox Christmas, on Saturday (Jan 6) Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to support soldiers "fighting to defend Moscow’s interests". Meanwhile, wives of Russians mobilised to fight in Ukraine symbolically laid flowers at the flame of an unknown soldier near the Kremlin and demanded the return of their husbands from the front.

<h2>Putin’s change in tone</h2>

“Many of our men, our courageous, heroic guys, Russian warriors, even now, on this holiday, defend the interests of our country with arms in hand,” said the Russian president at a late Saturday meeting with families of Russian soldiers who have died in Ukraine.&nbsp;

He also said that he has ordered his government to ramp up support for those who fight and call on his people to be merciful and just.&nbsp;

It has also been reported that Putin, who is facing elections in March, has been softening his speeches to focus on traditional Russian values and unity.&nbsp;

“I would like our meeting to be a clear, understandable signal to all my colleagues throughout the Russian Federation, and at all levels – a clear signal to ensure that my colleagues are always and everywhere with you, I repeat, any level of power,” he told the families gathered at a chapel at his residence in Novo-Ogaryovo outside Moscow.

In a separate greeting for the occasion issued on the Kremlin’s website, Putin&nbsp;called on his citizens to follow the “unshakable” values of “goodness, mercy and justice” and on the Russian Orthodox Church to help strengthen “the institution of families” and patriotism.&nbsp;

Notably, this year Putin did not call for a ceasefire in Ukraine to coincide with the holiday – like he did last year – which many Orthodox Christians celebrate on January 6-7.&nbsp;

“We want to draw the authorities’ attention and that of the public to our appeal. We have tried several means. We made a written appeal to lawmakers, officials, administrations – but we were not heard,” Maria, a 47-year-old sales manager, whose husband was mobilised in November 2022, told the news agency.&nbsp;

Maria Semyonova, a legal assistant, urged authorities to “negotiate peace” in Ukraine at a protest where police, according to AFP, did not intervene.&nbsp;

The protest is “the only peaceful action that has not yet been banned by law,” Paulina, the mother of a one-year-old child, told the news agency.&nbsp;

A former pro-Russian member of the Ukrainian parliament was shot dead near Moscow, the responsibility for the alleged assassination, according to media reports, has been claimed by Kyiv. What happened to the former Ukrainian lawmaker? The former Ukrainian lawmaker identified as Illia Kyva was shot dead in a park in the Odintsovo region southwest of Moscow. News agencies, AFP and Reuters citing sources have said that the attack was orchestrated by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) after he defected to Moscow when Russia invaded last year. Kyiv assassinates pro-Russian former Ukrainian politician near Moscow: Reports

Vladimir Putin will be taking part in the March presidential elections in Russia, Reuters news agency reported on Monday (Nov 6) citing sources.

If he wins, which he most likely will, the Russian leader, who turned 71 on Oct 7, will remain in power until 2030, making him the longest-serving leader in Russia since the inception of the Soviet Union.

Putin succeeded Boris Yeltsin on the last day of 1999. He has already served as president for longer than any other Russian ruler since Josef Stalin.

<h2>Putin pegged to be the winner&nbsp;</h2>

Though the confirmation hasn’t been made official yet, Reuters reported that Putin enjoys 80 per cent approval ratings.

With no opposition leader rallying that much support, and the supposed support from the state, Putin is pegged to be the clear winner.

"The decision has been made - he will run," one of the sources who has knowledge of planning told Reuters.

Kommersant newspaper also reported, citing a source, that a formal announced would made with a few weeks.

Another source told Reuters that Putin’s advisers were preparing for his participation and that Putin has made his mind about the presidential elections.

"The world we look out upon is very dangerous," one of the sources was quoted as saying.

<h2>Official confirmation awaited&nbsp;</h2>

There has been no official confirmation from the Kremlin till now, but spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in September that if Putin decided to run, then no one would be able to compete with him.

The reports of Putin running for president come at a time when rumours about his purported ill health have been raging since the Russia-Ukraine war.

The Kremlin has dismissed reports that Putin was unwell as disinformation spread by the West.

"Everything is fine with him, this is absolutely another fake," Peskov responded on Oct 24 when asked about an unsourced report by a Russian Telegram channel, picked up by some Western media, that the President had suffered a serious health problem.

Vladimir Putin to run for March presidential election, seeks to remain in power until at least 2030: Report

Former Austrian minister Karin Kneissl moved to Russia, along with her two ponies, which she transported to the country via a Russian military plane.

Kneissl, in a conversation with Russia's state-owned Tass news agency, revealed that she would be moving to St Petersburg to work at the Geopolitical Observatory for Russia’s Key Issues [GORKI].

The think tank was set up to "help define the policies for the Russian Federation" with a focus on the Near and Middle East.&nbsp;

"I co-founded the Gorki centre and manage it," Tass news agency quoted Kneissl as saying. "Since there is a lot of work there and it requires a lot of attention, I cannot do this in passing. I decided to move to St. Petersburg for this work."&nbsp;

As per a report by Russian investigative website The Insider, Kneissl's ponies were flown to Saint Petersburg on a military aircraft last week from the Russian air base at Hmeimim in Syria.

"It was impossible for me to drive a lorry through Syria under the circumstances of the war," Kneissl confirmed to news agency AFP on Wednesday (September 13).

"Due to sanctions, there are no flights or DHL (shipping service)," Kneissl wrote on Telegram, flabbergasted that her "move has become a political issue". &nbsp;

In the year 2018, the then-foreign minister of neutral Austria, Kneissl made headlines when she invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to her wedding in Austria and also danced with him. She left the government the very next year and moved to France in September 2020.

The 58-year-old claimed that she was pressured to leave which is why she had temporarily settled in a small village in Lebanon.

In the year 2021, Kneissl joined the Board of Directors of the Russian oil giant Rosneft.

She stepped down from her position in May 2022 after the European Parliament passed a resolution threatening sanctions against Europeans still on the boards of major Russian companies.

Former Austrian minister moves to Russia, flies her two ponies on board Russian military plane

President Vladimir Putin reviewed the country’s warships and nuclear submarines in St Petersburg, on Sunday (July 30), and praised the Russian navy in an address at the annual warship parade which he attended with several African leaders. Meanwhile, Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev said Moscow would have to use a nuclear weapon if Kyiv’s ongoing counteroffensive was a success.

<h2>Russia to get 30 new vessels this year: Putin</h2>

The Russian president reviewed 45 ships, submarines and other vessels that took part in the annual Navy Day parade, which is said to be a traditional show of military might that takes place in the Gulf of Finland and on the River Neva in Putin’s native St Petersburg.&nbsp;

Putin, who was accompanied by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu and Navy Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, inspected some ships from a launch boat on the Neva before making a speech, as per media reports.&nbsp;

The event took place amid Russia’s ongoing “special military operation” in Ukraine while Moscow also claimed to have downed <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/putin-claims-russia-does-not-reject-peace-talks-amid-ukrainian-drone-attack-on-moscow-city-620699">three Ukrainian</a> drones in the Russian capital city, early on Sunday.&nbsp;

Notably, the Russian Navy has played a significant role in the Ukraine war by pummelling the Western-backed country with ship and submarine-launched cruise missiles.&nbsp;

According to the Kremlin, some 3,000 navy personnel took part in the parade on land. During his speech, Putin said that the Russian Navy would receive 30 new vessels “of different classes” this year and hailed the “brave crews of ships and submarines,” without mentioning Ukraine.&nbsp;

“In the name of Russia, our sailors give all their strength, show true heroism and fight valiantly, like our great ancestors,” said Putin. He added, “Today, Russia is confidently implementing major elements of its national maritime policy and is consistently building up the power of its navy.”&nbsp;

The African heads of state and representatives from other countries who were present for the Russia-Africa summit in St Petersburg which concluded on Friday, also accompanied the Russian president for the event, said the Kremlin.&nbsp;

<h2>Ex-Russian president about using nuclear weapons in Ukraine</h2>

While the incumbent president did not address the war in Ukraine in St Petersburg, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev took to his official social media accounts, on Sunday, and said Moscow would be forced to fall back on its own nuclear doctrine if Kyiv’s counteroffensive was successful.&nbsp;

“Imagine if the..offensive, which is backed by NATO, was a success and they tore off a part of our land then we would be forced to use a nuclear weapon according to the rules of a decree from the president of Russia,” said Medvedev.&nbsp;

He added, “There would simply be no other option. So our enemies should pray for our warriors’ (success). They are making sure that a global nuclear fire is not ignited.” The former Russian president has previously been accused by Kremlin critics of making extreme statements in a bid to stop the West from supplying arms to Ukraine.&nbsp;

In his statement, Medvedev seemed to be referring to the part of the Russian nuclear doctrine that says that nuclear weapons can be used in response to aggression against Moscow carried out using conventional weapons which threatens the existence of the Russian state, according to Reuters.&nbsp;

Putin reviews Russian warships and nuclear subs, says navy to receive 30 new vessels this year

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday (July 28) said Moscow is "carefully" examining proposals made by some African leaders to end the conflict in Ukraine amid reports of an intensive counteroffensive by Kyiv. On the second day of the&nbsp;Russia-Africa summit in Saint Petersburg, Putin said: "We respect your initiatives and we are examining them carefully."

"Previous mediation initiatives were monopolised by so-called advanced democracies. Now, Africa too is ready to help resolve problems that appear to be outside of its area of priorities," he said.&nbsp;

"The African continent is indeed becoming a new centre of power. Its political and economic role is growing exponentially. Everyone will have to take this reality into account. For example, let's look at the initiative by a number of African states on solving the Ukraine crisis, which is an acute problem, we are not shying away from reviewing it," Putin added.&nbsp;

Before Russia, an African group travelled to Ukraine and offered crisis mediation. They called for military de-escalation, security assurances for both parties and mutual acknowledgement of sovereignty.&nbsp;

The offer to mediate was rejected by Ukraine, saying it would freeze the conflict without ensuring that Russian troops leave Ukrainian soil. The Kremlin had also said earlier that the African proposals would be "very difficult to implement".

<h2>Russia's grain offer to African nations&nbsp;</h2>

Russia recently pulled out of an agreement that would have allowed Ukrainian grain exports over the Black Sea, causing worry among African nations.&nbsp;

But Putin stated at a Russia-Africa meeting that Russia was increasing food supplies to Africa, including free grain shipments announced the day before. The Russian president said that he was interested in developing military relations with the continent.&nbsp;

Putin also said Russia was prepared to supply some weapons to Africa for free to enhance security on the continent, and to work more closely with African law enforcement and intelligence services.&nbsp;
