<p>"It remains critical that Ukraine is able to defend itself against ongoing Russian aggression and violation of its sovereignty," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said the approval of the requests would allow Ukraine to take "full advantage of its new capabilities as soon as the first set of pilots complete their training".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukraine defences destroyed 15 Russian drones during an attack that took place overnight, Kyiv's air force released a statement on Saturday (August 19).</p>

<p>Further adding details, it said that 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones were used in the aerial assault. However, it did not specify as to what happened to the other two drones.</p>

<p>Russian forces "attacked from the north with 'Shahed-136/131' attack UAVs. A total of 17 attack drones were launched from the Kursk region," the Ukrainian force said on Telegram.</p>

<p>It added that air defences were activated in "northern and central, as well as in the western regions".</p>

<p>"15 enemy drones were destroyed by the forces and means of the Air Force in cooperation with the air defence systems of other components of the Defence Forces of Ukraine."</p>

<p>Russian forces on Friday (August 18) said that they had shot down a Ukrainian drone that was targeted at Moscow and its Black Sea Fleet. The drone, according to the reports, disrupted air traffic at all the civilian airports of the Russian capital.</p>

<p>The Russian defence ministry and Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that there were no casualties after air defences destroyed the drone which plummeted over a non-residential building in the capital city's Expo Center complex on Friday.</p>

<p>As per the state-run news agency TASS, one of the walls of the venue's pavilion had partially collapsed.</p>

<p>"The area of the collapse is about 30 square meters (323 square feet)," emergency services told TASS.</p>

<p>Citing aviation services, TASS reported that the airspace near the international airport of Vnukovo was briefly closed, delaying departures and arrivals.</p>

Moscow mayor says 45,000 from the city fighting in Ukraine

<p>Ukrainian fighters earlier detained by Russia from the battlefield have shared horrifying accounts of their experience while in Russia’s detention facility in southwestern Russia.</p>

<p>Interviewed by BBC, over a dozen ex-detainees have claimed they were frequently subjected to torture, a gross violation of international humanitarian laws.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, BBC clarified that it was not able to independently verify the claims made by the former prisoners of war.</p>

<h2><strong>What are the allegations?</strong></h2>

<p>Quoted by BBC, the former detainees levelled grave allegations against Russian forces and guards at the Pre-Trial Detention Facility Number Two, in the city of Taganrog.</p>

<p>Men and women were frequently beaten. Russian guards would often hit in the kidneys and chest. Inspections would occur daily and detainees would be subjected to electric shocks.</p>

<p>Through violence, Russian forces would often force the detainees into giving false confessions, which Russia allegedly used as evidence in courts.</p>

<p>One of the captives quoted by BBC said they were often offered very little food and insufficient medical attention, which often led to the death of several inmates.</p>

<h2><strong>Russia’s attitude towards the allegations</strong></h2>

<p>BBC claimed Russia didn’t respond to the requests for comment; however, Moscow has denied such allegations in previous instances.</p>

<p>A couple, their 23-day-old daughter, and another man were killed in the village of Shyroka Balka, said Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko. The couple’s previously critically wounded 12-year-old son later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital, he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Two people were killed and one person was wounded in the neighbouring village of Stanislav, said Klymenko, adding that the area was struck 12 times with artillery. “The terrorists will never willingly stop killing civilians,” said the Ukrainian minister.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “Terrorists must be stopped. They must be stopped by force. They don’t understand anything else.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes after Ukraine had managed to reclaim the western part of the Kherson region from Russian occupation last November, however, Moscow’s forces have continued regularly shelling the region from across the Dnipro River.</p>

<p>Vladimir Rogov, a Russian-installed official in parts of Zaporizhzhia controlled by Moscow, on Sunday (August 13) said that the Ukrainian forces are trying to pierce Russian lines in the western parts of the Donetsk region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Russian official also reported intense fighting south of Velyka Novosilka where Ukrainian troops are supposedly trying to pierce Russian lines to push down to the coast on the Sea of Azov.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The enemy managed to enter and gain a foothold in the northern part of Urozhaine after two weeks of the heaviest and bloodiest battles for this settlement,” said Rogov.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, he also said that the Russian forces still controlled the southern part of Urozhaine, adding that Ukrainian forces were clearly aiming to take control of a town further south, Staromlynivka, reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukraine launched its counteroffensive last month to retake territory captured by Russia in the south and east of the country. On Saturday, Ukrainian forces also said they had “partial success” near Robotyne on the front line in the southern Zaporizhzhia region.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Russian warship fires warning shots at cargo ship in Black Sea</strong></h2>

<p>The Russian defence ministry, on Sunday (August 13), said that it fired warning shots with automatic weapons on a Palau-flagged cargo ship in the Black Sea as it made its way to Ukraine.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Russian officials, its Vasily Bykov patrol ship had fired automatic weapons on the Sukru Okan vessel after it failed to respond to a halt for an inspection. The ship was said to be heading to the Ukrainian port of Izmail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“To forcibly stop the vessel, warning fire was opened from automatic weapons,” said the Russian officials, adding that the military boarded the vessel with the help of a Ka-29 helicopter.</p>

<p>“After the inspection group completed its work on board, the Sukru Okan continued on its way to the port of Izmail,” said the Russian defence ministry. A report by Reuters citing Refinitiv shipping data said that the ship seemed to be headed north towards the coast of Bulgaria.</p>

<p>The incident also comes a month after Russia formally backed out of the United Nations-brokered grain deal and stopped Ukraine from exporting its grain via the Black Sea amid the ongoing war.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russian-appointed head of the region, Denis Pushilin took to Telegram and said that one civilian was killed in a district of the city of what Moscow calls Donetsk People’s Republic, since claiming to have annexed it. He added that six people were also wounded in Makiivka, which is in the east of Donetsk.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In total, the enemy fired 127 rounds of ammunition at peaceful cities and regions in the republic,” said Pushilin. He also went on to claim cluster munitions were among the artillery used.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes amid reports of both sides using cluster munitions since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Last month, Washington sent cluster munitions to Kyiv amid <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/several-nations-rights-groups-and-un-oppose-us-move-to-send-cluster-bombs-to-ukraine-613459">protests and criticism</a> while Ukraine has since vowed to only use them against concentrations of enemy soldiers amid its counteroffensive.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>20 unmanned Ukrainian drones shot down</strong></h2>

<p>Russia on Saturday further claimed that 20 unmanned Ukrainian drones were shot down by his officials near the Crimean peninsula where attacks have been stepped up by Kyiv.<br />

Air defence systems were used to down fourteen drones and six more using electronic warfare, said the defence ministry on the Telegram messaging service. There were no casualties or damage, it added.<br />

Talking to Telegram, Governor Vladislav Shapsha said that they also intercepted a drone in the Kaluga region, which is around 150 kilometres (about 95 miles) southwest of Moscow.</p>

Russia shoots down two Ukrainian missiles over Crimea bridge

<p>Ukrainian shelling killed at least two people and injured two others in the Russian border region of Bryansk on Thursday (August 10). The governor of the region, Alexander Bogomaz, said earlier that one man had died but later announced another person was also killed.</p>

<p>"At present, two civilians have been killed by the Ukrainian armed forces," he said on social media. Reports have mentioned that the attack took place in the Russian village of Chausy, some five kilometres from the Ukrainian border.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes on the same day when Ukraine urged civilians near the northeastern front line to evacuate amid Russia's ramp-up of an assault to recapture the territory. The region was already once seized during the war, which started last year on February 24.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kupiansk and the surrounding areas of Ukraine's Kharkiv region were liberated by Kyiv's forces last September, but Moscow has since pushed back on the region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It further noted that the residents could evacuate to Kharkiv, which is around 90 kilometres west, where they would have the option to move to safer regions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukrainian officials say that substantial Russian reinforcements have turned the northern front in the eastern Kharkiv region into the "epicentre" of hostilities, but that Ukrainian defences are holding.</p>

<p>Ruslan Muzychuk, who is the National Guard spokesman, told Ukrainian television on Thursday that "the Kupiansk direction remains the epicentre of hostilities, where the enemy is concentrating its main efforts".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Russian defence ministry, in a statement, said that it scrambled a Su-30 fighter jet to “prevent a violation of the Russian state border” after a US Reaper MQ-9 military drone was detected over the Black Sea.</p>

<p>“As the Russian fighter approached, the foreign reconnaissance drone performed a U-turn away from the border,” said the Russian officials. The ministry also claimed that the drone belonged to the US Air Force.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “The Russian aircraft returned safely to its airbase, there was no violation of the border.” This comes as reports about incidents involving Russian and Western aircraft have multiplied over the Black Sea and Baltic Sea in recent months.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Ukraine drone strike</strong></h2>

<p>Both Russia and Ukraine reported that a Ukrainian sea drone laden with explosives struck a Russian fuel tanker overnight, on Saturday, near the Crimean bridge, in the second such attack in 24 hours.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bridge, in question, links Russia to Crimea, which Moscow seized from Ukraine in 2014. A Ukrainian intelligence source told Reuters that the drone with 450kg of explosives hit the SIG vessel as it transported fuel for the Russian military in Ukrainian territorial waters.</p>

<p>“The tanker was well loaded with fuel, so the ‘fireworks’ were seen from afar,” said the report by Reuters citing an intelligence source.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kyiv is in the midst of its long-awaited counteroffensive against Moscow to recapture its territory and has been destroying Russia’s military infrastructure inside Russia or on Russian-controlled territory in Ukraine, as per reports.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Russian missile strike hits Ukraine aeronautics firm</strong></h2>

<p>Zelensky, on Saturday (August 5), said that a Russian missile hit a facility of the Ukrainian aeronautics group Motor Sich, one of the companies requisitioned by the government since the beginning of Moscow’s invasion back in February 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Today, there was another Russian missile attack against our country. Kinzhals, Calibers. They hit Motor Sich,” said Zelensky, during his evening address. The facility is located near Khmelnytskyi in western Ukraine around 300 kilometres southwest of Kyiv.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Ukrainian president, the strike included Russia’s hypersonic Kinzhal weapons, adding that “some of the missiles were shot down.” The Khmelnytskyi region which is hundreds of kilometres from the front lines is also home to a major Ukrainian airbase and is regularly targeted by Russian strikes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, Motor Sich makes plane and helicopter engines and other components and was taken over by the government in Kyiv as a part of its “strategic” firms taken over by Ukraine’s defence ministry last November.</p>

<p>Ukraine presented its much-awaited and equally anticipated 10-point peace formula during talks held in Saudi Arabia without Russian participation, various sources cited by news agency AFP said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The meeting had senior officials from approximately 40 countries, including the US, China, and India. The primary goal of the discussions was to seek agreement on crucial principles for bringing an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine, a conflict that has had far-reaching implications on the global economy.</p>

<p>The meeting, hosted by Saudi Arabia, was seen as&nbsp;an attempt by the Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman to act as a mediator to resolve the dispute and end the conflict which started in February last year.</p>

<h2><strong>Ukraine's peace formula supported by 'multiple' countries</strong></h2>

<p>A representative of the Ukrainian delegation reportedly said that the proposed 10-point peace formula received support from multiple participating countries. The representative, however, did not disclose the specific countries who purportedly supported Ukrainian stance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two-day meeting in Jeddah did not have any representation from Russia, the principal party in the conflict.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thereby, the Jeddah meet has emerged as a strategic diplomatic effort by Ukraine to expand its support network beyond its traditional Western allies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The country aimed to foster alliances with countries from the Global South, seeking assistance in reaching a viable solution to the conflict.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By engaging with a broader array of nations, Ukraine hoped to garner additional backing for its peace initiatives.</p>

<p>For the Jeddah summit, sources cited by The Indian Express said that the 30 invitees for the summit included&nbsp;Brazil, South Africa, Chile, Egypt, the European Union, Indonesia, Mexico, Poland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Zambia.</p>

<h2><strong>Ukraine's 10-point peace plan: The central goal</strong></h2>

<p>At the heart of Ukraine's 10-point proposed peace plan formula remained a call for the complete withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory. This plan aimed to hold Russia accountable for war atrocities and requires Moscow to surrender all captured Ukrainian territory and pay damages.</p>

<p>Russia has rejected the plan in the past.</p>

<p>Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's office had previously said that the Jeddah meeting would focus on this critical aspect. Achieving this goal would be paramount in restoring peace and stability to the region, Kyiv maintains.</p>

<p>The gathering in Jeddah followed earlier informal talks in Copenhagen, which had not resulted in an official statement. <p>Kremlin said in a statement that during a telephonic conversation between Putin and Erdogan, the "willingness for cooperation with Turkey and other interested states on this issue was expressed".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Food security has again become the main issue of global concern after Moscow's decision to scrap the deal brokered by United Nations and Turkey. The grain deal allowed Ukraine to export food through the Black Sea in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine war, which started last year on February 24.&nbsp;</p>

Russia reaffirms stance on grain deal, continues strikes on key Ukrainian ports

<p>An apartment block was hit by a Russian missile in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Friday (July 29) in which nine people, including two children, were injured, said Kyiv officials.<br />

"Dnipro. Another terrorist attack," stated Sergiy Kruk, head of the Ukrainian State Emergency Service, on Telegram. "Currently, we know of 9 injured, including two children. Work continues,” he added. Earlier, Internal Affairs Minister Igor Klymenko reported "a Russian strike on a multistorey building in Dnipro", stating five people suffered injuries.<br />

Regional governor Serhiy Lysak, taking to the Telegram messaging app, said that the injured were being treated at home. Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov said that this was the third time the SBU security service building was targeted by Russia. The two buildings were empty - the residential building had no one inside it because it just got completed and units were being put up for sale.</p>

The security service building is partially destroyed,” he added.</p>

<p>In the videos shared on social media, smoke was seen billowing from the residential building's top floors, which were&nbsp;badly damaged. President Volodymyr Zelensky said, "Dnipro. <p>Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (July 26) claimed that Ukraine had intensified attacks on the frontline in the last few days. Reuters reported that a Ukrainian official said the country's forces are making slow but steady progress in the battlefield.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Wednesday, three different media outlets cited unnamed US officials as saying Kyiv had launched a new phase of its ambitious counteroffensive which seeks to eject Russian troops from nearly 20% of Ukrainian land still under occupation.</p>

<p>Asked about these reports, Yuriy Sak, an adviser to Ukraine's defence minister, told Reuters that "there is nothing new" happening at front lines. "In the south, we are moving forward slowly but surely," he said.</p>

<p>As he interacted with Russian television, Putin claimed that every Ukrainian attack had been beaten back. He also said that Russian forces had inflicted significant losses on their opponents.</p>

<p>Defence ministries of both countries appeared to offer contradicting reports of fighting.</p>

<p>Russian defence ministry said that Russian forces had repelled Ukrainian attacks around the village of Klishchiivka, as per reports by Russian news agency TASS. The village is near Bakhmut.</p>

<p>However, Hannah Maliar, Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister wrote on Telegram that Ukraine's troops were "gradually moving forward" near Bakhmut. She claimed that the fight was ongoing near Klischiivka, Kudriumivka and Andriivka.</p>

<p>She claimed that Ukrainian forces beat back Russian attacks near Kupiansk and Lyman.</p>

<p>In response, Western diplomats decried Russia's demands, denouncing the exploitation of potential famine as a bargaining tool for national interests. The British ambassador, Barbara Woodward, strongly condemned the use of food as a weapon.</p>

<p>State-run news agency PAP quoted its secretary Zbigniew Hoffmann as saying on Friday that Poland's security committee decided in a meeting on Wednesday to move military units to the country's east due to the Wagner Group's presence in Belarus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite claims that Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin has flown back to Russia, in a video on Wednesday, he was shown welcoming his fighters to Belarus.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He was also seen telling them that they would take no further part in the Ukraine war for now and that they have&nbsp;to gather their strength for Africa while they trained the Belarusian army.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Belarusian defence ministry said on Thursday that the Wagner mercenaries had started to train Belarusian special forces at a military range just a few miles from the border with NATO member Poland.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Analysts have previously noted that any attack on a NATO member will be retaliated by the alliance as it is founded on the principle of collective defence, meaning that if one NATO ally is attacked, then all NATO allies are deemed to have been attacked.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They will attempt peace talks but if diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military power to undertake crisis-management operations.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zbigniew Hoffmann told PAP: "Training or joint exercises of the Belarusian army and the Wagner Group is undoubtedly a provocation."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The Committee analysed possible threats, such as the dislocation of Wagner Group units. Therefore, the Minister of National Defense, chairman of the Committee, Mariusz Blaszczak, decided to move our military formations from the west to the east of Poland," Hoffmann added.&nbsp;</p>
