<p>Additionally, a school board in the Inland Empire region rejected a history curriculum that mentioned Harvey Milk, a murdered civil rights activist and the first openly gay elected official in California's history, citing it as "activism" and questioning its relevance to the curriculum.</p>

<p>The movie has accumulated 102.4 million views, 297.8K likes, 112.8K retweets, and 18.6K quote tweets since it was posted. Additionally, around 82K people have bookmarked it.</p>

<p>Historically, there have been many misconceptions, stigmatization, and persecution of LGBTQ+ people. These attitudes have been based on cultural, religious, or social norms and limited scientific knowledge. Today it’s absolutely essential to recognize that being LGBTQ+ is not a choice but a natural variation of human diversity.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Being LGBTQ+ is not a choice</strong></p>

<p>Scientific research overwhelmingly supports the fact that sexual orientation and gender identity are not choices. Numerous studies, including genetic, neurobiological, and developmental research, suggest that being LGBTQ+ is a natural aspect of human diversity. Sexual orientation is influenced by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors, making it a complex and multifaceted aspect of a person's identity.</p>

<p><strong>A history of diversity and acceptance</strong></p>

<p>Contrary to popular belief, ancient India had a rich tradition of acceptance and celebration of all forms of love. Indian religious texts contained references to homosexual characters and themes, indicating mostly a neutral stance toward homosexuality. The Khajuraho temple features erotic sculptures showcasing the existence of sexual fluidity between homosexuals. It was only during the British colonial era in 1861 that homosexuality was criminalized under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, influenced by the belief that non-procreative sexual acts were sinful.</p>

<p><strong>In spite of efforts in inclusion the LGBTQ+ Community continues to face discrimination</strong></p>

<p>The discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community continues to be a harsh reality. According to the latest Human Development Report 2021-2022 from different countries, 75% of LGBTQ+ individuals have reported experiencing discrimination based on their gender identity and sexual orientation. The trauma leads to a higher rate of mental health issues and suicides within the community.</p>

<p>One of the popular arguments against the acceptance of LGBQT+ individuals is the belief that homosexuality is a psychiatric disorder that can be cured through counselling, hormone therapy, or medications. However, the American Psychiatric Association decades back removed the classification of homosexuality as a disorder. It’s only much later in 2018 that the Indian Psychiatric Society announced that homosexuality is not a disorder. Despite this, some quacks widely practice conversion therapy, causing severe mental and physical trauma. Tamil Nadu became the first state to ban conversion therapy, emphasizing the importance of acceptance and support.</p>

<p><strong>Data collection and visibility</strong></p>

<p>The lack of visibility and understanding of the LGBTQ+ population has been a result of the historical oversight and exclusion of LGBTQ+ data from official surveys and census. This omission is also due to concerns about safety, privacy, and confidentiality. However, the confidential and safe collection of LGBTQ+ data and including it in official surveys and the census is crucial for understanding and addressing the needs of this community and healthcare support.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Social Identities and intersectionality</strong></p>

<p>We all have multiple social identities that shape our experiences and perspectives. Acknowledging the intersectionality of these identities is essential. Homophobia and transphobia stem from deep-rooted prejudices and misconceptions, which can have detrimental effects on the well-being and social integration of LGBTQ+ individuals. Overcoming these biases requires education, awareness, empathy, and a commitment to fostering inclusivity, equality, and respect.</p>

<p><strong>Personal lived experience on LGBTQ+ inclusion</strong></p>

<p>Our personal lived experiences can shape our understanding and perspectives. I was a transphobic person due to the stereotyping and conditioning I’ve seen growing up. My journey of understanding the struggles of trans people has been a transformative experience when I encountered a transwoman during a train journey from Mumbai to Bangalore in my teens. This and various other experiences challenged my preconceived notions, bias and stereotypes, leading to empathy and compassion. My journey as an ally, &nbsp;of challenging my biases and actively supporting and advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion through my work and personal relationships continues today.</p>

<p><strong>Beyond performative inclusion&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Investing in building an inclusive and discrimination-free workplace is essential today for the well-being of all employees. &nbsp;It helps build a culture where everyone is treated with trust, dignity and respect. Embracing LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace helps build psychological safety, encourages diverse perspectives, increases retention and attraction of diverse talent, promotes equitable policies and benefits, and enhances the company's brand as an inclusive employer. Today board members and investors care about businesses that are authentically invested in DEI as part of their overall ESG strategy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Gen Z population want to be part of work cultures that are truly inclusive of all identities.&nbsp;<br />

Today companies cannot just have a performative approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion. True intention and mindful investment in hiring and supporting LGBTQ+ people is an expectation.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Being an LGBTQ+ ally matters</strong></p>

<p>An ally is an intentional advocate who stands up for, supports and uplifts the marginalized and under-represented people around them.</p>

<p>The term "ally" holds particular significance within the LGBTQ+ community. An ally may identify as heterosexual and/or cisgender but actively strive to create a more inclusive and affirming world for those who identify as LGBTQ+. Being an authentic ally can be a transformative experience and people around you with a new perspective</p>

<p><strong>Some simple tips to be an effective ally include -</strong></p>

<p>⦁&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Invest in learning more about LGBTQ+ identities and history<br />
⦁&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Check your own biases. Recognize and challenge any prejudices or assumptions you may have.&nbsp;<br />
⦁&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Learn and use inclusive language, starting with pronoun etiquette.&nbsp;<br />
⦁&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Add your pronouns to your email signatures, social media profiles etc.<br />
⦁&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Watch movies and series where LGBTQ+ have been sensitively portrayed, do this with your family<br />
⦁&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Be part of LGBTQ+ ERGs/Networks and Forums in your workplaces and outside<br />
⦁&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Recognize and challenge homophobia and transphobia<br />
⦁&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Support non-profits and social enterprises working in the LGBTQ+ support space<br />
&nbsp;<br />
In embracing LGBTQ+ inclusion and being authentic allies, we send a powerful message of acceptance and love, fostering environments where people are free to be themselves without fear of judgment or exclusion and that’s truly the only way to be.&nbsp;</p>

Numerous studies, including genetic, neurobiological, and developmental research, suggest that being LGBTQ+ is a natural aspect of human diversity. Sexual orientation is influenced by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors, making it a complex and multifaceted aspect of a person's identity. A history of diversity and acceptance Contrary to popular belief, ancient India had a rich tradition of acceptance and celebration of all forms of love. Indian religious texts contained references to homosexual characters and themes, indicating mostly a neutral stance toward homosexuality. The Khajuraho temple features erotic sculptures showcasing the existence of sexual fluidity between homosexuals. It was only during the British colonial era in 1861 that homosexuality was criminalized under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, influenced by the belief that non-procreative sexual acts were sinful. In spite of efforts in inclusion the LGBTQ+ Community continues to face discrimination The discrimination faced by the LGBTQ+ community continues to be a harsh reality. According to the latest Human Development Report 2021-2022 from different countries, 75% of LGBTQ+ individuals have reported experiencing discrimination based on their gender identity and sexual orientation. The trauma leads to a higher rate of mental health issues and suicides within the community. One of the popular arguments against the acceptance of LGBQT+ individuals is the belief that homosexuality is a psychiatric disorder that can be cured through counselling, hormone therapy, or medications. However, the American Psychiatric Association decades back removed the classification of homosexuality as a disorder. It’s only much later in 2018 that the Indian Psychiatric Society announced that homosexuality is not a disorder. Despite this, some quacks widely practice conversion therapy, causing severe mental and physical trauma. Tamil Nadu became the first state to ban conversion therapy, emphasizing the importance of acceptance and support. Data collection and visibility The lack of visibility and understanding of the LGBTQ+ population has been a result of the historical oversight and exclusion of LGBTQ+ data from official surveys and census. This omission is also due to concerns about safety, privacy, and confidentiality. However, the confidential and safe collection of LGBTQ+ data and including it in official surveys and the census is crucial for understanding and addressing the needs of this community and healthcare support. Social Identities and intersectionality We all have multiple social identities that shape our experiences and perspectives. Acknowledging the intersectionality of these identities is essential. Homophobia and transphobia stem from deep-rooted prejudices and misconceptions, which can have detrimental effects on the well-being and social integration of LGBTQ+ individuals. Overcoming these biases requires education, awareness, empathy, and a commitment to fostering inclusivity, equality, and respect. Personal lived experience on LGBTQ+ inclusion Our personal lived experiences can shape our understanding and perspectives. I was a transphobic person due to the stereotyping and conditioning I’ve seen growing up. My journey of understanding the struggles of trans people has been a transformative experience when I encountered a transwoman during a train journey from Mumbai to Bangalore in my teens. This and various other experiences challenged my preconceived notions, bias and stereotypes, leading to empathy and compassion. My journey as an ally, of challenging my biases and actively supporting and advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion through my work and personal relationships continues today. Beyond performative inclusion Investing in building an inclusive and discrimination-free workplace is essential today for the well-being of all employees. It helps build a culture where everyone is treated with trust, dignity and respect. Embracing LGBTQ+ inclusion in the workplace helps build psychological safety, encourages diverse perspectives, increases retention and attraction of diverse talent, promotes equitable policies and benefits, and enhances the company's brand as an inclusive employer. Today board members and investors care about businesses that are authentically invested in DEI as part of their overall ESG strategy. The Gen Z population want to be part of work cultures that are truly inclusive of all identities. Today companies cannot just have a performative approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion. True intention and mindful investment in hiring and supporting LGBTQ+ people is an expectation. Being an LGBTQ+ ally matters An ally is an intentional advocate who stands up for, supports and uplifts the marginalized and under-represented people around them. The term "ally" holds particular significance within the LGBTQ+ community. An ally may identify as heterosexual and/or cisgender but actively strive to create a more inclusive and affirming world for those who identify as LGBTQ+. Being an authentic ally can be a transformative experience and people around you with a new perspective Some simple tips to be an effective ally include - ⦁ Invest in learning more about LGBTQ+ identities and history ⦁ Check your own biases. Recognize and challenge any prejudices or assumptions you may have. ⦁ Learn and use inclusive language, starting with pronoun etiquette. ⦁ Add your pronouns to your email signatures, social media profiles etc. ⦁ Watch movies and series where LGBTQ+ have been sensitively portrayed, do this with your family ⦁ Be part of LGBTQ+ ERGs/Networks and Forums in your workplaces and outside ⦁ Recognize and challenge homophobia and transphobia ⦁ Support non-profits and social enterprises working in the LGBTQ+ support space In embracing LGBTQ+ inclusion and being authentic allies, we send a powerful message of acceptance and love, fostering environments where people are free to be themselves without fear of judgment or exclusion and that’s truly the only way to be. <p>A report by Fox News said that several Target locations throughout the country host enormous June Pride Month displays every year,&nbsp;</p>

<p>They kept merchandise this year ranging from "tuck friendly" bathing suits for transgender persons to mugs that proclaim "gender fluid".&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, some have criticised the retail giant for the displays, with children's products particularly angering many shoppers. &nbsp;</p>

<p>A Target insider told the media outlet that many locations, mainly in rural areas of the South, have relocated their Pride sections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>They want to escape the backlash that Bud Light has received in recent weeks after utilising a transgender influencer in an advertising effort.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The insider further noted that there were "emergency" calls on Friday, and several managers and district senior directors were urged to immediately close the Pride areas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted, a Target insider said, "We were given 36 hours, told to take all of our Pride stuff, the entire section, and move it into a section that’s a third the size. From the front of the store to the back of the store, you can’t have anything on mannequins and no large signage."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We call our customers ‘guests,’ there is an outrage on their part. This year, it is just exponentially more than any other year," the insider further said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I think given the current situation with Bud Light, the company is terrified of a Bud Light situation," the insider added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The insider also mentioned that Friday's call started with highlighting "how to deal with team member safety".&nbsp;</p>

<p>After two significant gay pride events in Berlin this month, a mosque in the city became the first in Germany to display a rainbow flag in solidarity of the LGBT community. Before Friday prayers, the Ibn Rushd-Goethe Mosque in Berlin’s Moabit neighbourhood flew the flag in the front of a modest crowd that included culture senator Klaus Lederer. The mosque was established five years ago, is the only one in Germany that identifies as liberal and permits men and women to pray together in addition to welcomes LGBT worshippers, reported by AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the mosque’s six imams, Mo El-Ketab, stated that one of the main goals of mosque is to offer “a safe space for people who are different, so they too can experience the spiritual side of their lives,” AFP reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Months before June, companies’ marketing calendars remind them to start working on their pride campaigns: the graphic design department decorates logos and slogans with colourful rainbows; the copywriting department writes jingles and puns with queer lingo, and the finance department estimates how much profit the campaign is forecasted to generate. By the time pride month comes around, the corporate world explodes in a colourful carnival of pro-LGBTQ+ advertisements, campaigns and rebrandings. What was once a civil rights protest and riot to demand equal rights has become part of the corporate pipeline. Nevertheless, pride provides companies with the opportunity to make their values clear, show support for their LGBTQ+ employees and, in the best cases, use their platforms to demand social change.</p>

<p>Various companies across the globe are seeking to build a better experience for their people to promote loyalty, minimize turnover and drive better engagement. As part of these efforts, companies are empowering individuals to be their true selves. With the celebration of pride month, most employers have been considering how to better support members of the LGBTQ+ community in their workforce during a time of growing adversity for this group. When June 1 arrived, companies like Facebook and Walmart rolled out shelves of colourful merchandise, flooded their social media pages with rainbows and aired compassionate commercials.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As June arrives, corporations try really hard to make sure their consumers knew how much they supported the LGBTQ+ community. But the catch is, that now that the Pride month is over, corporations will put their shelves of merchandise on clearance, cleanse their social media pages of rainbows and no longer air compassionate commercials. Historically, corporate support seems to mostly vanish on July 1, leaving LGBTQ+ individuals and allies wondering if a company really cares about the community after Pride Month ends, or if it is just participating in rainbow washing.</p>

<p>Now, question is, what is Rainbow Washing? Rainbow washing is aesthetic support, and it’s about marketability and profit. The key part is that some corporations are actively giving support to anti-queer politicians, legislators, lobbyists and laws while at the same time claiming to be allies. At the surface level, a company’s rainbow logo indicates that it is an ally of the LGBTQ+ community. Rainbow washing isn’t the kind of thing that you can Google in five seconds. It takes a bit of energy and time. There are several behind-the-scenes ways a corporation could be harming the LGBTQ+ community. The LGBTQ+ community has made tremendous progress in the fight to secure the same workplace rights as other colleagues. Employers and co-workers can prevent future erosion of the basic human rights everyone deserves by being more resolute in their support and actions.</p>

<p>Rainbow washing strips pride month of its political power. Pride has always been political because the month is not only a celebration but a time to defend the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals. When Pride is stripped of its political power, then queer people are just there for celebration or as a culture to appropriate because it’s fun and looks pretty. The voices of queer people that are actually suffering violence or being discriminated against aren’t actually heard because Pride isn’t supposed to only be fun and pretty. Let's keep in mind and not forget that the first-ever Pride was a riot, and rainbow washing weakens the power of the origin. It gives corporations the opportunity to dilute the message of Pride and remove its revolutionary teeth. Rainbow washing harms the legitimacy of pride month in the eyes of those who are unsupportive of the LGBTQ+ community. Most conservatives aren’t going to have their minds changed by whether or not corporations support queer people and it is likely to draw more reactionary anger because they see it as proof that queer people are influencing the public. But at the same time, I believe that<strong>&nbsp;</strong>rainbow washing isn't all that bad, though. Earlier, companies would not do business with LGBTQ+ individuals and would turn them away. Today, they adorn rainbows. It is a sign that the acceptance of queer existence is fundamentally different than it was 10, 15 or 20 years ago. Even though slapping a rainbow on one's company logo is not nearly enough, we must not completely throw out the idea that changing a logo to a rainbow isn’t necessarily a bad thing.</p>

<p>While the exploitation of the LGBTQ+ community is a cause for anger within parts of the community, corporate support is better than what it used to be. Corporations finding it more profitable to voice public support for the queer community is not necessarily a bad thing. While it makes sense for companies to gain monetary profit, the problem is when it takes away from LGBTQ+ voices. Imagine if a friend said: We celebrated your birthday, so now I’m going to ignore you for the rest of the year. Pride month or moreover the notion of being an ally for the LGBTQ+ community and fighting for civil rights must go all year round and not for just a month or a day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So, if the primary outcome of Pride Month is that in June we go to a parade, buy a rainbow-labelled product or pick up a cute T-shirt, these events have been stripped of much of their power. What companies and society need to spark is a year-round fight for LGBTQ+ people’s well-being, from healthcare to housing security to nondiscrimination—both within corporations and on an individual level.&nbsp;</p>

Let's keep in mind and not forget that the first-ever Pride was a riot, and rainbow washing weakens the power of the origin. It gives corporations the opportunity to dilute the message of Pride and remove its revolutionary teeth. Rainbow washing harms the legitimacy of pride month in the eyes of those who are unsupportive of the LGBTQ+ community. Most conservatives aren’t going to have their minds changed by whether or not corporations support queer people and it is likely to draw more reactionary anger because they see it as proof that queer people are influencing the public. But at the same time, I believe that rainbow washing isn't all that bad, though. Earlier, companies would not do business with LGBTQ+ individuals and would turn them away. Today, they adorn rainbows. It is a sign that the acceptance of queer existence is fundamentally different than it was 10, 15 or 20 years ago. Even though slapping a rainbow on one's company logo is not nearly enough, we must not completely throw out the idea that changing a logo to a rainbow isn’t necessarily a bad thing. While the exploitation of the LGBTQ+ community is a cause for anger within parts of the community, corporate support is better than what it used to be. Corporations finding it more profitable to voice public support for the queer community is not necessarily a bad thing. While it makes sense for companies to gain monetary profit, the problem is when it takes away from LGBTQ+ voices. Imagine if a friend said: We celebrated your birthday, so now I’m going to ignore you for the rest of the year. Pride month or moreover the notion of being an ally for the LGBTQ+ community and fighting for civil rights must go all year round and not for just a month or a day. So, if the primary outcome of Pride Month is that in June we go to a parade, buy a rainbow-labelled product or pick up a cute T-shirt, these events have been stripped of much of their power. What companies and society need to spark is a year-round fight for LGBTQ+ people’s well-being, from healthcare to housing security to nondiscrimination—both within corporations and on an individual level. <p>Right-wing activist and 'White Lines' actor Laurence Fox was banned from Twitter for a few hours for posting a swastika symbol made from LGBTQ+ flags. He returned to the platform unrepentant.</p>

<p>On Monday, the 44-year-old actor-turned-campaigner, Fox, left many disappointed and angry as he changed his profile picture to a swastika made out of four Pride flags, which reflected his belief that LGBT pride month is 'enforced with a sense of hectoring authoritarianism'.</p>

<p>In the caption, he wrote, "Oh blessed and the most holy month!"&nbsp;</p>

<p>The tweet didn't go down well with the digital community and resulted in a sharp backlash. Twitter even temporarily froze his account for violating their 'hateful imagery' policy.</p>

<p>However, he returned to the platform in a few hours and he instantly went live to address the recent backlash. On the live broadcast, he also addressed the comments made by&nbsp;actress and comedian Kathy Burke on Twitter.&nbsp;He slammed the actress for getting her mother into the matter and for wishing he wouldn't be alive today.</p>

<p>"The existence of Lawrence [sic] Fox is another reason to be pro abortion," Burke wrote on her Twitter handle.</p>

<p>Fox didn't fancy&nbsp;the London Assembly member's intervention and he hit back by accusing her of employing tactics reminiscent of those exercised by the Chinese Communist Party.</p>

<p>"This is the UK, not China. Good to know you would like to see your political opponents prosecuted for 'hate', locked up and probably worse. So thanks for proving my point for me,"&nbsp;Fox said.</p>

<p>Planning to stage a riot near an LGBTQ pride event in northwest Idaho, over two dozen members of a white supremacist group have been arrested.</p>

<p>31 members of the Patriot Front face misdemeanor charges of conspiracy to riot according to the police chief in Coeur D'Alene, Lee White.</p>

<p>A bystander dialed 911 after spotting a little army getting into a U-haul truck and they were wearing white masks and carrying shields.</p>

<p>Although the tweet was meant as a parody, modeled after language influencers use to promote Pride campaigns, Johantgen’s coming out was sincere. She received an outpouring of support alongside winking nods of approval. One Twitter user responded with an image of the Taco Bell logo displayed against a rainbow background, with the text: “LIVE YÁÁÁS.”</p>

<p>DoorDash is hosting several events for employees this month that include drag bingo, Pride trivia and a donation and letter-writing campaign in support of trans people via the organization Point of Pride. Raytheon Technologies released a statement Wednesday outlining its commitment to its LGBTQ workers and noting that the company “is regularly recognized by the Human Rights Campaign as one of the best places for LGBTQIA+ employees to work.”</p>

<p>Throughout June, Ikea is donating proceeds from sales of its rainbow shopping bags to the Trevor Project, a suicide prevention organization that focuses on the LGBTQ community. Ikea is also encouraging customers to take selfies with the company’s “HOME PRIDE HOME” cross-stitch design. A PDF of the image is available for download on Ikea’s website.</p>

<p>These corporate initiatives are familiar enough that they’ve become common fodder for satire. In 2021, comedian Meg Stalter uploaded a video of herself playing a representative of a butter shop making a clumsy attempt to court gay customers. Her opening line — “Hi, gay!” — became internet shorthand for corporate pandering. T-shirts bearing the slogan are available in her online shop.</p>

<p>Addie Shrodes, who recently completed a doctorate in education from Northwestern University, has researched online humor in LGBTQ communities. “Usually there is a Pride joke that happens around the month of June,” Shrodes said. “And this year, I’ve been noticing this anti-capitalist, anti-corporate joke around influencer commodification in Pride spaces.</p>

<p>“Especially within queer and queer of color activism, there’s a really long history of using humor to survive and resist interlocking structures of oppression,” Shrodes said, citing the work of activist group ACT UP and Jose Muñoz, a queer theorist who wrote, “Comedy does not exist independently of rage.”</p>

<p>Shrodes said that humor has been used for decades within queer and trans activist movements as a way to question dominant norms. “In the social media world that we live in, influencer culture gets normalized. Being a paid ambassador, being a paid content creator, that gets normalized,” Shrodes said, adding that memes could be “a way to use humor to create some distance from those trends and say, ‘Oh, this is actually kind of weird. Maybe we don’t want this.’”</p>

<p>Or maybe people do? Sometimes it’s not so clear.</p>

<p>“I like that format because I hate capitalism,” said Johantgen, 30. Not that she’s above trying to parlay her tweet’s virality into some corporate swag. In a reply to her own tweet, she urged Taco Bell to donate to groups that support the LGBTQ community and also suggested that the company send freebies her way.</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">The gruesome incident in that club, once a space of joy, is a reminder to the LGBTQIA+ community of the consequences they face for exercising freedom, even in relatively open societies. Asserting those freedoms is at the heart of the&nbsp;Pride&nbsp;Month.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">In late 20th century, when "certain looking" people were discouraged from pursuing social interaction in public, clubs emerged as safe spaces for sexual minorities.</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">With the Stonewall riots in New York City, the Gay Liberation Movement took off in 1969 and called on governments to take notice of the community’s needs and demands. After being excluded from the mainstream narrative, minorities were finally finding a voice. That movement continues to manifest itself globally with yearly&nbsp;pride&nbsp;parades and the enlarged demands for representation.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">While legal recognition in democratic countries has allayed fears among sexual minorities, the ground reality continues to remain grim.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">In fact, with global discussions about marriage equality and anti-discrimination measures, the community has been flung into the mainstream narrative. This does not sit well with naysayers. And when majoritarian groups feel threatened, they react with violence.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">An NBC news report claims that in 2019 alone, hate crimes against transgenders soared by 20 per cent and that’s just in the US.</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">The pertinent question is - has the LGBTQIA+ community been celebrating a premature victory?&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">In India, the scrapping of the archaic Section 377 instilled a sense of faith among people. But there are no measures in place to protect LGBTQIA+ community from discrimination and harassment, in both the public and private spheres.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">The transgender community especially remains extremely compartmentalised due to decades-long stigmatisation.&nbsp;Are radical changes like marriage equality enough?&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">In 2019, the&nbsp;Transgender&nbsp;Persons Bill&nbsp;was passed with the hope of ending&nbsp;discrimination in terms of employment, education, and access to healthcare. But is that change trickling down in India?</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">The country's&nbsp;"Anti-Paedophilia Act" conflates pedophilia with homosexuality, a common trope which is pushed in homophobic regimes to curtail rights.</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">On the other&nbsp;end of this spectrum are countries like Italy, where an attempt is being made to create an anti-LGBT hate law.&nbsp;A noble proposal, it was immediately shot down by neighbouring&nbsp;Vatican which&nbsp;headquarters&nbsp;the Roman Catholic Church.</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">It's not unusual for neighbours to disagree with each other's policies. But the Vatican's attempt to alter the course of pro-LGBTQIA+ measures in Italy are peculiar.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">This time, its stance has been invoked as a nation, deeply symbolic of the&nbsp;“concordat” that defines Vatican's&nbsp;relationship with Italy, whose&nbsp;"Zan bill" intends to outlaw targeted violence against sexual minorities.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">Italy has extremely less protective provisions for its sexual minorities when compared with other European countries, which is perceived as a&nbsp;direct product of the Catholic Church's historical influence on the country.</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">It takes a lot more than snap alterations to change a society comfortably settled in majoritarian excesses.&nbsp;No amount of rainbow posturing by corporates will usher real social change until education begins from both ends of power.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">In India, the absenteeism exhibited by mainstream political leaders in terms of LGBTQIA+ rights is jarring. It reflects the misplaced priorities of a democracy. At a time when democracies should expand their freedoms, many regimes are taking a step back and questioning the need for diversity.</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">If this trend escalates, there could be pushback against equality.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">At Euro 2020, a sporting event has drawn attention after Manuel Neuer donned a rainbow-coloured armband to support equal rights, which was seen as a ‘political symbol’ by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">They opened an investigation into this statement and are planning to hold more matches in Budapest, where legislation prevents dissemination of any content which ‘promotes’ homosexuality.&nbsp;</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">We’re all familiar with the Holocaust. But how many of us know that after the Jews, Hitler’s ferocious empire systematically targeted homosexuals - a story that has remained largely buried because war crime archives tend to ignore gendered and sexual violence.</p>

<p data-ogsc="black">In Chechnya, a Russian territory, anti-gay purges have become rampant in the last five years. Forced disappearances and secret imprisonments at Hitler-style concentration camps have been noted by several eyewitnesses.</p>

Most online campaigns driven by marketing greed are acts of posturing more than redemption that appear and disappear in sync with evolving laws. Roughly 50 per cent&nbsp;of Indians have access to internet - the behemoth of free information and knowledge accumulation. Unfortunately, our national politics have never openly embraced narratives of equality for fears of alienating vote banks. But it’s time to move forward, to trigger targeted awareness campaigns, to imbibe sexuality and not just procreative sex into our education system.</p>

In India, the absenteeism exhibited by mainstream political leaders in terms of LGBTQIA+ rights is jarring. It reflects the misplaced priorities of a democracy. At a time when democracies should expand their freedoms, many regimes are taking a step back and questioning the need for diversity. If this trend escalates, there could be pushback against equality. <p class="MsoNormal">The decision comes after UEFA dropped an investigation into Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer wearing a rainbow coloured armband in the Euro 2020 matches against Portugal and France.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">"In this letter, the mayor outlines the reasoning behind this request to be a political decision which has been taken by the Hungarian parliament.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">"UEFA understands that the intention is also to send a message to promote diversity and inclusion - a cause, which UEFA has been supporting for many years having joined forces with European clubs, national teams and their players, launching campaigns and plenty of activities all over Europe to promote the ethos that football should be open to everyone and consequently UEFA has proposed alternative dates for the illumination which align better with existing events.<o:p></o:p></p>

According to britannica.com, Baker saw the rainbow as a natural flag from the sky. He chose eight colours, each symbolising something. Hot pink for sex, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for art, indigo for harmony, and violet for spirit.<br />

Later, due to production issues, the pink and turquoise stripes were removed while indigo was replaced with blue resulting in the contemporary six-striped flag. It was not until the year 1994 that the flag really became a prominent symbol of the community.</p>
