BRICS summit 2023: De-Dollarisation irreversible, declares Putin

The South African Deputy President's Spokesperson, Vukani Mde, has vehemently dismissed a story published in the South African newspaper Daily Maverick concerning Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit.

Labeling the report as "fabricated", Mde categorically denied the claims that PM Modi was snubbed upon his arrival and went on to call the newspaper's narrative a "mystery" due to its seemingly baseless nature.

Speaking exclusively to WION, Mde refuted every element of the Daily Maverick's account, insisting that "none of it was true."

According to the newspaper's story, PM Modi had purportedly refused to disembark from his aircraft at Waterkloof Air Force Base, a purported action attributed to the South African government's decision to send only a cabinet minister for his official welcome.

Mde, while stating the factual position, gave details regarding welcome planned for PM Modi.

South African govt refutes media report of snub to PM Narendra Modi amid BRICS summit

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant diplomatic journey this week, as he travels to South Africa to participate in the 15th BRICS summit in Johannesburg. Set to take place from August 22 to 24, the summit marks a key diplomatic engagement of this year, given it is the first in-person BRICS Summit since 2019.

The BRICS grouping consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa and represents a staggering 42 per cent of the world’s population along with a significant 27 per cent of the global GDP.

An impressive 67 African and Global South leaders have been invited by South Africa which is the host of this year’s summit, with 30 leaders having already confirmed their attendance. This year’s summit is anticipated to draw global attention due to its diverse participation and the potential outcomes it may yield.

The primary focus of this summit revolves around expansion, with an expected announcement on guidelines for enlargement and the identification of recommended countries to join the BRICS bloc.

A report from the BRICS sherpas, who lead discussions within the group, was submitted to foreign ministers last month. This report will be presented to the leaders during the summit, influencing the final decision on expansion.

Notably, Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi engaged in discussions with PM Modi last week, expressing interest in both connectivity projects like Chabahar and his country’s inclusion in BRICS.

South Africa has received formal expressions of interest from over 20 countries seeking BRICS membership which are Algeria, Argentina, Bangladesh, Bahrain, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, Honduras, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Nigeria, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, Venezuela and Viet Nam.

The evolving geopolitical landscape has renewed interest in BRICS as nations in the Global South explore alternatives in a multipolar world. Given the substantial African representation, this summit provides India with an opportunity to enhance ties and explore future collaboration areas with African countries.

Interestingly, India, holding the G20 chair, has proposed the inclusion of 55 African member countries bloc, the African Union, within the G20. This proposition has garnered support from countries such as the US, UK, France, and Russia. An official announcement is expected during the upcoming G20 summit in Delhi on September 9-10.

Focus is also on any bilateral engagements of PM Modi, including a potential structured bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. During a press conference held in Pretoria on Friday (August 18), the Chinese Ambassador expressed hope for direct talks between the two leaders on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit.

The last formal bilateral meeting between PM Modi and President Xi occurred during the 11th BRICS summit in Brazil back in November 2019. Chandrayaan-3: PM Modi to join virtually from South Africa as India attempts moon landing

On Wednesday (August 23), India scripted history in its lunar exploration as Chandrayaan-3 made a successful landing at the Moon's South Pole. This mission, headed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), marks a huge and historic achievement for the country and its success rode on the optimal performance of the Vikram Lunar lander. With the successful landing, India has further elevated its stature and joined a select group of nations to have attained the historic feat of soft lunar landings. Apart from India, the United States, China, and the former Soviet Union are the other nations to have successfully made lunar landings so far.

After India's momentous achievement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Every Indian is celebrating today. Every home is celebrating. I am also connected to the people of my country at this proud moment. It is the dawn of a new era." PM Modi added, "He also congratulated the team of scientists in Isro who made the mission a success. "No country has reached there (the South Pole of the moon) before. With the hard work of our scientists, we have reached there."

After India's successful landing, many sports personalities also reacted to the historic achievement for the country. Among India's sports personalities, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar led the wishes and wrote on X, formerly Twitter, "@ISRO represents the best of India. Humble, hardworking women & men, coming together, overcoming challenges, and making our tricolour fly high. India must celebrate and congratulate the Chandrayaan-2 team, which was led by Shri K Sivan, along with Shri S Somanath’s #Chandrayaan3 team. Every hard landing has lessons which take us closer to a soft landing - on the moon, and in life. Jai Hind!"

The likes of current India captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Hockey India, Anil Kumble, Ajinkya Rahane, Mithali Raj, Sania Mirza, etc. joined in the celebrations and congratulated the countrymen on the social media platform X.

With the hard work of our scientists, we have reached there." After India's successful landing, many sports personalities also reacted to the historic achievement for the country. Jai Hind!" The likes of current India captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Yuzvendra Chahal, R Ashwin, Hockey India, Anil Kumble, Ajinkya Rahane, Mithali Raj, Sania Mirza, etc. joined in the celebrations and congratulated the countrymen on the social media platform X.
Dimitrios Ioannou: This is a historic visit, because you know the previous one from an Indian Prime Minister was 40 years ago in 1983 when the Prime Minister of India was Indira Gandhi. Anyway, I think that this is a combination of the very good, very strong relationship between Greece and India, and it's really a very important step in strengthening our relations.

WION: How do you see connectivity as the key focus between the two sides?

Dimitrios Ioannou: okay, there's going to be a comprehensive cooperation between Greece and India. So the connectivity comes from many, many let's say, from many, many courses. You know, the main idea is that Greece can become the gateway to India to the European Union, and it is in two ways. The one way is a physical way that is that most probably all the products that come from India to Europe, will enter the Europe, through some Greek port because of the geostrategic position of Greece. So the Greek ports are very much important in this way. There is another way, the Indian investments in Greece. Connectivity comes in many ways, and I think that in the coming decades Greece will play an important role and will be a gateway for India to Europe.

WION: Greece has been supporting India on Kashmir, especially after removal of special status for the erstwhile state, what do you have to say on that?

Dimitrios Ioannou: Greece has always stated that this is an internal affair of India and the Indian government and the Indian authorities, they have the right to define what will be the exact status of Kashmir as of any other of any other region in India. Greece is democratic, India is a democratic country. Every decision made by the Indian government should be respected by all international community. This is the position of Greece regarding Kashmir.

WION: What kind of security cooperation do you see between the two countries?

Dimitrios Ioannou: As you know, there have been recently two very important joint exercises and military cooperation. One was the participation of the Indian Air Force in the European military air force exercise. And the other one was the arrival of Indian ships in another Greek exercise. I think that by this close cooperation, we are building a very good feeling of trust between the two militaries because we have a common approach regarding the respect of international law, especially the UNCLOS. And also, we are both countries that are going to promote peace and stability in our areas and around the world.

WION: How do you see India's involvement in the Mediterranean region?

Dimitrios Ioannou: This is natural, India's presence in the world is growing as the economy is growing. It is growing in the political role. All these countries, through their synergies and through these partnerships, are trying to promote international stability and base, and we have a very positive view of that kind of cooperation for the peaceful and productive presence of India in the Eastern Mediterranean region and we highly value and appreciate a very principled stance of India on the Cyprus issue all these years.

WION: And how do you see India's stance on the Cyprus issue?

Dimitrios Ioannou: Yes, as I told you, we very much appreciate this ethical and principled stance of India on the Cyprus issue. It has been since a very long time very positive factor in the Cyprus issue. And it's not only with their participation in the United Nations but also with their diplomatic stance and the support for UNSC resolutions on Cyprus.

WION: What is your view of the Indo-Pacific vision?

Dimitrios Ioannou: We have a very concrete and particular point of view regarding the Indo-Pacific issue. What we want is open and peaceful maritime routes everywhere in the world. At this present time, Indo-Pacific, I would say is the most important, the most important maritime route for International trade. So, in this way, we're very much aligned with India.

What's at stake for India at the BRICS Summit in South Africa?

Amid extended border tensions between the two countries, Beijing on Saturday hinted that President Xi Jinping may hold a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi when they attend the BRICS leaders’ summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, Bloomberg reported.

China’s ambassador to South Africa Chen Xiaodong hinted about the meeting during a briefing with the reporters in Pretoria.

“I am confident that as two nations, two countries, we will have direct talks, direct meetings," said Chen, adding, “I cannot say there is tension between us, but as neighbouring countries we have many common interests at the same time we have some problems."

While Xi will be in the African nation from August 21 to 24, PM Modi will reach Johannesburg in the afternoon of August 22. Currently, there is no official confirmation of a scheduled bilateral meeting but since the two leaders will be at the same venue, a possible meeting can't be ruled out.

If the meeting goes ahead, which remains a big 'if', it will be the first instance since May 2020 when the border standoff between the two nations reached its peak. The last time the two leaders had a brief encounter was at dinner in Bali, Indonesia, during the G20 Summit in November 2022.

The insistence of the Chinese side to meet PM Modi could also be ascertained from the fact that Beijing seemingly took a soft line during the latest round of border talks.

Notably, during the Major General level talks held on Saturday (August 19), both sides discussed ensuring that no new posts are constructed in close proximity to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. The two sides agreed on identifying specific limits for patrolling as well.

Often, such border talks have yielded no significant results with China opting for a stubborn stance, but Saturday's discussions were one of the few occasions when Beijing implied at mending the border situation.
