This was the actor’s first meeting with PM Modi after being sworn in as a member of the Rajya Sabha earlier in July.
Kamal Haasan gifts PM Modi a memento
In the photos, Kamal was seen interacting with PM Modi. He also gave him a memento themed around Keeladi village. The village is situated 12km from Madurai, set on the banks of the Vaigai River. The area is considered an ancient site dating back to the Sangam era. Sharing the photos, Kamal wrote, "Today, I had the honour of meeting the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi ji. As a representative of the people of Tamil Nadu and as an artist, I placed before him a few requests, foremost among them was the call to expedite the recognition of Keeladi's antiquity." "I urged the Prime Minister to extend his support to the Tamil people in showcasing to the world the grandeur of Tamil civilisation and the timeless glory of the Tamil language," he added.
Kamal Haasan takes oath in Rajya Sabha
Last month, Kamal took the oath in Tamil as an MP in the Upper House of Parliament, receiving a resounding applause from fellow MPs. This is his first stint at the Rajya Sabha. He was nominated with the support of the ruling DMK-led alliance, which had promised him a Rajya Sabha seat in return for MNM's support during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Kamal's recent film
Kamal was last seen in Thug Life, which hit the theatres in June this year. The film marked Kamal’s collaboration with Mani Ratnam, after three decades. The film had released in Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam. The film also starred Silambarasan TR, Trisha, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Nassar, Mahesh Manjrekar and Ali Fazal among others. Thug Life got mostly negative reviews from critics. WION’s Shomini Sen wrote, “Thug Life seems to be more of a massy drama which doesn’t particularly have any distinct stamp of Ratnam. Thug Life unfortunately falls into the usual trappings of a masala potboiler and never elevates itself to be something marvelous. It's a cinematic version of Mirzapur, where everyone is eyeing the hot seat and thus, trying to outdo the other person. And because most of us have watched the web series, Thug Life doesn't offer us anything new.”

India said on Tuesday that it supports freedom of navigation and legitimate commerce through the waters of the South China Sea, and that any differences between the parties concerned should be resolved peacefully. Replying to a question on the reaction of the Chinese foreign ministry to the recent joint naval exercises between India and the Philippines, saying no ‘third party’ intervention will be acceptable in the South China Sea, MEA Secretary (East) Periasamy Kumaran said in a media briefing, “We support freedom of navigation and legitimate commerce through the waters of the South China Sea. India has an abiding interest in peace and stability in the region. Our position is based on the UN Conventions of the Law of the Sea. India also believes that any differences between the parties concerned should be resolved peacefully, without resorting to threat or force.” A spokesperson for the PLA Southern Theater Command had earlier said, “The Philippines has been rallying an external country to interfere in the South China Sea by organizing so-called joint patrols, which undermine regional peace and stability. PLA Southern Theater Command’s forces remain on high alert, resolutely defending national territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.” In the special briefing on the visit of President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. of the Philippines, Kumaran said, “The visit commenced yesterday and will go on till 8th August. ‘Partially BRICS, partially trade’: Trump reveals TWO reasons why he slapped 25% tariff on India, then calls Modi a ‘friend’

US President Donald Trump has threatened to slap tariffs of up to 25% on Indian imports if Washington and New Delhi fail to finalise a trade deal soon.
Trump: “They are going to pay 25%”
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Trump said, “They are going to pay 25%,” when asked about tariffs on Indian goods. Pressed further on whether the rate would be 20% to 25%, he replied, “Yeah, I think so. India has been, they’re my friends.” Although Trump referred to India as a friendly partner, he has repeatedly criticised the country’s trade practices and high import duties, calling the relationship “very tough”.Also read: ‘Ten days from today’: Trump, ‘disappointed’ in Putin, issues fresh ULTIMATUM to Russia to end Ukraine war or face sanctions
USTR says more negotiations needed
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CNBC that more discussions are required to reach a trade agreement with India. “They have expressed strong interest in opening portions of their market, we of course are willing to continue talking to them,” Greer said. “But I think we need some more negotiations on that with our Indian friends to see how ambitious they want to be,” he added.Despite efforts from both sides, no specific sticking points have been revealed publicly. Unlike in cases with other countries, Trump has not yet issued a formal tariff warning letter to India. The US has taken issue not only with India’s high tariffs but also with its non-tariff barriers, such as digital service taxes and complex regulations for foreign imports. The administration has called India’s testing requirements “uniquely burdensome.”Trump has frequently raised concerns about the trade gap with India. Last year, the US imported $87 billion worth of goods from India, compared to $42 billion in exports to India. Major Indian exports to the US included pharmaceuticals, smartphones, and clothing. “They charge more tariffs than any other country,” Trump said back in February, just before a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Earlier during his speech during the Operation Sindoor debate in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi said that if Prime Minister Narendra Modi had even half the courage of his grandmother and former PM Indira Gandhi, he would have called US President Donald Trump a liar for claiming he brokered India-Pakistan peace. “If he has the courage, he will say here that Donald Trump is a liar. 50% Indira Gandhi ka courage hai toh ye bol dega,” Gandhi said throwing a challenge at PM Modi and then went on to fix his reference to the prime minister saying, “bol denge, sorry”. “Pahalgam attack was a brutal attack organised and orchestrated clearly by the Pakistani state,” he said. “Even before Operation Sindoor began, the Opposition committed itself to stand like a rock with the government,” he added “Why is the Prime Minister silent? Rahul Gandhi further said that US President Donald Trump had hosted Pakistan army chief Asim Munir at the White House last month, but the Indian government did not call out the US President over it.

Modi discussed his emotional connect with Kashi and its spiritual association with the Cholas, and said, “I am happy that today, Gangajal has been brought here from Kashi once again. After showing a strong pro-China tilt in the past, President of the Maldives, Mohamed Muizzu, seems to have made an about turn as he praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him a “wonderful person”.
Why the Muizzu U-turn?
There may be several reasons for the shift in stance? The Maldivian economy is under severe stress with a substantial budget deficit and dwindling foreign reserves, and the India’s support is pivotal to stabilise finances. Although Maldives still owes China large debts, New Delhi has emerged as a key partner to avoid potential economic default. PM Modi announced a fresh $ 565 million line of credit (LoC) for the Maldives and signed an agreement to reduce its annual debt repayment burden by 40%. On its part, India maintained steady engagement as PM Modi was the first world leader to congratulate Muizzu after his election victory.
