In a statement, the Palestinian health ministry said, "Mohammad Jibril Roummaneh died as a result of serious injuries caused by bullets fired by the occupying forces in El-Bireh northeast of Ramallah." The ministry said a second Palestinian was injured but did not elaborate. The Israeli army, meanwhile, said that assailants hurled Molotov cocktails at a military post adjacent to the Psagot, next to El-Bireh. "Soldiers... identified the suspects and responded with live fire," the army said, adding two assailants were neutralised and transferred to receive medical treatment. 'A heroic martyr,' say Hamas In a statement, the Hamas called Roummaneh as one of its members who fell as a "heroic martyr" while "defending the freedom of (his) people" near Psagot. The statement was accompanied by an image of a very young man. At least 242 Palestinians, 32 Israelis, a Ukrainian, and an Italian have been killed since the beginning of the year in violence linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel has occupied the West Bank -- now home to some three million Palestinians -- since the Six-Day War of 1967. Excluding annexed east Jerusalem, the territory is now home to around 490,000 Israelis who live in settlements that are considered illegal under international law. Two Palestinians killed in raid in West Bank Nearly a week back, Israeli troops killed two Palestinians in a raid in the West Bank. As per the Palestinian health ministry, the two victims were killed by live Israeli bullets to the head. The ministry identified the victims as Osaid Abu Ali, 21, and Abd al-Rahman Abu Daghash, 32. Hamas said that Osaid Abu Ali was one of its fighters. Last Sunday, crowds of mourners attended the funeral of the two Palestinians. Palestine says Hamas member killed by Israeli troops in West Bank

Israel arrested five Palestinians in a plot allegedly hatched in Iran to target and spy on senior Israeli politicians. Shin Bet - the country’s internal security agency - stated the targets included Israel’s far-right national security minister, Ben-Gvir. As per officers, an Iranian security official living in neighbouring Jordan had recruited three Palestinian men in West Bank and another two Palestinian citizens of Israel. They were tasked to gather intelligence about several high-profile Israeli politicians.

At least six people were killed while over a dozen were injured in fresh clashes at the largest Palestinian camp in Lebanon on Wednesday (September 13), according to the Palestinian Red Crescent's Lebanon branch. Imad Hallak from the Palestinian Red Crescent told news agency AFP that renewed fighting in the Ein al-Hilweh camp had "killed six people and wounded 13". Since the fighting broke out on Thursday last week, at least 15 have been killed. Ein al-Hilweh, the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, located on the outskirts of the southern city of Sidon, houses over 63,000 people. It has been the ground zero for clashes, ever since the leader of the Fatah faction and four of his bodyguards were killed by another Palestinian group, identified as Jund al-Sham, in July. Lebanon's powerful Iran-backed Hezbollah group has urged for a halt in the fighting on multiple occasions but to no avail. Fatah's Azzam al-Ahmad and Hamas's Mussa Abu Marzuk also met late Tuesday (September 12) at the Palestinian embassy in Beirut and talked about maintaining a ceasefire but the situation turned pear-shaped quickly on Wednesday. Also read | Lebanon clashes claim multiple lives in Palestinian refugee camp A UN report stated that most of the people in the Ein al-Hilweh camp are Palestinians whose descendants were forced to flee their homes in 1948 after the state of Israel was established. Since then, clashes between rival groups over the administration of the camp have not been an uncommon phenomenon. According to the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), since the clashes broke out, thousands have left the camp for safer pastures. In 1993, under the sun-drenched skies of the White House, the world watched in awe as Yasser Arafat (former president of Palestine) and Yitzhak Rabin (former prime minister of Israel), two stalwarts from opposing sides, clasped hands in a moment that would become etched in history. The Oslo Accords were signed, offering a glimmer of hope in the seemingly intractable Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Thirty years later, the echoes of that symphony of peace, filled with the harmonious chords of diplomacy and the discordant notes of unresolved issues, continue to reverberate.

Dr Michael Milstein, the head of the Palestinian Studies Forum at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies, speaking on the significance of the Oslo Accords states: "The Oslo Accords were the most crucial junction in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It was the first time the leaders recognized each other and agreed to establish a Palestinian entity between the river and the sea. You can embrace or critique the Oslo Accords, but they have solidified into an unchangeable fact."

A glimpse into the past

The Oslo Accords were a result of secret negotiations in Oslo, Norway, and signalled a ray of hope in a region marred by violence. The groundbreaking agreement delineated a framework for Palestinian self-governance in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, envisioning an ultimate comprehensive peace settlement. Dr Milstein states that the Accords "signaled a ray of hope" and laid the foundation for Palestinian self-determination. While hailed as a breakthrough, they were not without their detractors.

The legacy of hope and frustration

While the Oslo Accords offered a glimmer of hope, they also sowed the seeds of frustration. Many consider them a failed peace deal due to the ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestine. Disputes over land, security, and the status of Jerusalem persisted. The assassination of Prime Minister Rabin in 1995 added another layer of complexity to the peace process.

Current relevance amidst tensions

Today, the Israel-Palestine conflict remains as volatile as ever. The Oslo Accords' promise of a two-state solution seems more elusive than ever. The Gaza Strip continues to be a flashpoint, and issues like refugees and the status of Jerusalem remain unresolved. Against this backdrop, the Oslo Accords serve as a cautionary tale about the challenges of achieving lasting peace.

Dr Milstein concurs, highlighting that "the basic vision of 1993 cannot be implemented today," leaving both sides in an "unconventional and perplexing situation".

Moreover, since the signing of the Oslo Accords, Israeli settlements in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip have continued to expand. At the close of 1993, roughly 116,300 Israeli settlers resided in these territories, as per Israel's Central Bureau of Statistics. Although Israel withdrew its settlements from Gaza in 2005, the population of Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, has swelled from 520,000 to over 700,000 according to the UNHRC.

The role of the United States

The United States played a crucial role in brokering the Oslo Accords, and its involvement remains significant. Over the years, the US policy has evolved but the country continues to advocate for a negotiated settlement and supports a two-state solution. Washington's diplomatic influence remains instrumental in facilitating dialogue between the two parties.

Global implications

The significance of the Oslo Accords transcends the borders of Israel and Palestine; they bear global ramifications. These agreements showcased the potential of diplomacy in resolving longstanding conflicts, offering a blueprint for peace negotiations worldwide. Nevertheless, their limitations and the enduring conflict in the region underscore the intricate nature of attaining a just and enduring peace.

"In 1993, all superpowers, particularly the US, played a pivotal role in promoting and supporting the Oslo Accords. Today, international involvement, including the Arab world during the Arab Spring, is significantly diminished, including economic support. The entire conflict now hinges more on the two principal parties involved," added Dr Milstein.

In conclusion, the Oslo Accords, despite the obstacles and intricacies they encompass, stand as a momentous chapter in the relentless pursuit of peace in the Middle East. As we commemorate three decades since that historic handshake, it is imperative to recognise the enduring relevance of seeking a just and lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, an issue that reverberates not only across the region but also throughout the global order. The journey is arduous, but the pursuit of peace remains an unshakable commitment.

There is a race against time to sign a normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia a host of issues remain unresolved and now Riyadh seems to be upping the ante by calling for a neo-diplomatic mission for the Palestinians. Our correspondent Jodie Cohen has sent us this report.

Riyadh wants diplomatic mission for Palestine

Amidst evolving geopolitical dynamics, Saudi Arabia appointing Ambassador Nayef Al-Sudairi as a non-resident envoy to Palestine has triggered speculation about diplomatic shifts in West Asia.

The move coincides with ongoing efforts by the United States to foster official relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

However, Israel's rejection of a diplomatic base in Jerusalem for Al-Sudairi highlights the complex web of regional aspirations and international interests.

Saudi Ambassador's enlarged portfolio

Saudi Ambassador to Jordan Nayef Al-Sudairi recently extended his responsibilities to include the role of non-resident envoy to Palestine.

This expansion was marked by adding "consul-general in Jerusalem" to his duties, as indicated by a social media post from the Saudi embassy in Amman.

The announcement seemed to align with the Palestinian ambition of establishing a state with East Jerusalem as its capital, a vision not shared by Israel, which regards Jerusalem as its own capital.

Conflicting claims and ongoing tensions

Israel's steadfast assertion of Jerusalem as its capital contrasts with international perspectives, and the recognition of this status by the United States in 2017 remains a point of contention.

The longstanding struggle between Israel and Palestine over Jerusalem's sovereignty continues, with Israeli authorities restricting Palestinian diplomatic activities in the city.

Against this backdrop, Saudi Arabia's move to engage in diplomatic representation has raised eyebrows and ignited discussions about potential geopolitical implications.

While Saudi Arabia has historically championed the Palestinian cause and refrained from formal ties with Israel, recent geopolitical developments indicate a possible shift.

The United States has been actively pursuing normalising relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, hinting at the potential for a groundbreaking Middle East agreement.

However, Israel's uncompromising stance on Jerusalem and the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict underscore the challenges that lie ahead in achieving any meaningful reconciliation.

Israel rejects Jerusalem diplomatic base for Saudi envoy to Palestinian authority

Saudi Arabia, on Saturday (August 12), selected a non-resident ambassador for the Palestinian Territories who will also serve as consul general in Jerusalem. This comes amid speculations about the Kingdom’s consideration of establishing formal diplomatic relations with Israel.

Who is Saudi Arabia’s pick?

According to a social media post from the embassy in Jordan and confirmed by a Saudi foreign ministry official, the kingdom has picked Nayef al-Sudairi, the current ambassador to Amman as the first non-resident Saudi Arabian ambassador to the Palestinian Territories.

In a video, broadcast by the Saudi state-affiliated Al-Ekhbariya channel, al-Sudairi called the appointment an “an important step” in supporting the Palestinian cause.

The selection also underscores the desire of King Salman and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman “to strengthen relations with the brothers of the State of Palestine and give it a formal boost in all areas,” said al-Sudairi.

This comes as Saudi Arabia has reportedly long championed the Palestinian cause and shunned official ties with Israel. However, the United States, which has strong ties with Israel, has sought to promote what could be a historic Middle East deal that would include normalising Israeli-Saudi relations.

So far, the file for the Palestinian Territories has been handled by Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Jordan. Saudi Arabia does not recognise Israel and also did not join the Washington-brokered Abraham Accords which saw Israel establish ties with two of its kingdom’s neighbouring countries, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain.

Palestinians welcome first Saudi ambassador

Palestinian officials have welcomed the first non-resident Saudi Arabian ambassador. According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, President Mahmoud Abbas’s diplomatic adviser Majdi al-Khalidi received a copy of the credentials of al-Sudairi, at a ceremony in Jordan.

The Palestinian president’s diplomatic adviser called the appointment an “important step that will contribute to further strengthening the strong brotherly relations that bind the two countries and the two brotherly peoples,” as quoted by Wafa.

A Palestinian Authority official speaking to AFP, on the condition of anonymity said that with this announcement, “Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed its recognition of the state of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital”.

This comes as Jerusalem is one of the biggest points of contention in a possible peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians. “This is one part of several steps and we will continue to develop the relationship with them,” the Palestinian source added.

Is Saudi Arabia planning to establish ties with Israel?

Last year, during US President Joe Biden’s Middle East tour, the Saudi civil aviation authority announced that it was lifting overflight restrictions on “all carriers” which also paved the way for Israeli planes to use Saudi airspace.

However, the kingdom later denied that the airspace move was a “precursor to any further steps” towards normalisation of ties with Israel. Saudi Arabia has also repeatedly said that it would adhere to the decades-old Arab League position of not establishing official ties with Israel until the conflict with the Palestinians is resolved.

Additionally, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said the Western-backed Palestinian Authority has sought to engage with Saudi Arabia over their concerns about a possible normalisation of ties with Israel.

This comes as Palestinians have expressed concerns that any such agreement would weaken support for their cause in the wider Arab world as well as undermine their hope for an independent Palestinian state.

Israeli army says it killed 3 Palestinian militants in West Bank; Islamic Jihad vows response

Is saudi arabia rethinking ties with Iran? Saudi Arabia recently called on its citizens to quickly leave Lebanese territory, where the Iran-backed Hezbollah group wields significant power. Rival armed groups are clashing in the Palestinian camp of Ain el-Hilweh in the country's south. Ain el-Hilweh is the largest of 12 Palestinian camps in Lebanon, hosting around 80,000 of up to 250,000 Palestinian refugees countrywide. The clashes come at a time when the united states are pushing for a Saudi-Israel normalisation deal. Some analysts say the Saudi-Iran deal in March challenged Washington's role as the main outside power broker in West Asia. Here's a look at what's brewing in the region...

Israeli forces shot and killed a Palestinian teenager, early Friday (August 4), during a pre-dawn raid into the occupied West Bank, reported the Palestinian media and the Palestinian health ministry. This comes as tensions have remained high in the region with the Israeli army conducting near-nightly raids and deadly Palestinian attacks on Israel.

What do we know about the raid?

According to the Palestinian health ministry, Israeli soldiers shot 18-year-old Mahmoud Abu Sa’an at point-blank range as they stormed the Nur Shams refugee camp in Tulkarem on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), in a statement said that their forces retaliated at Palestinian gunmen who opened fire and hurled explosives, and other rioters throwing stones.

They also said that the overnight Tulkarem raid was part of an Israeli military arrest operation where they reportedly detained five Palestinians across occupied West Bank villages, confiscated explosives and dispersed protests in a village near the city of Ramallah.

A report by the Palestinian news agency Wafa, citing local witnesses, said an Israeli soldier got out of one of the military vehicles and shot Abu Sa’an in the head while he was lying on the ground. Subsequently, the 18-year-old – who was reportedly a recent high school graduate – was rushed to the Thabet Thabet Hospital in Tulkarem where he was pronounced dead.

Local media reports also said that confrontations broke out between Palestinian residents and Israeli forces during the raid. The Israeli army had also stationed snipers on the rooftops of several Palestinian homes in the camp, reported Al Jazeera.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group said that they had opened fire on Israeli forces and detonated several explosive devices against army vehicles. “This unarmed young man did not possess weapons and had nothing to do with any military action,” said the armed group Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades.

UN warns about rise in West Bank settler violence

The United Nations, on Friday (August 4), also warned about the rise in West Bank settler attacks on Palestinian people and property with nearly 600 such incidents so far this year. A report by the UN humanitarian agency OCHA recorded 591 settler-related incidents in the West Bank, in the first six months of 2023.

The “incidents” have resulted in Palestinian casualties, property damage, or both. “That’s an average of 99 incidents every month, and a 39-percent-increase compared with the monthly average of the whole of 2022, which is 71,” OCHA spokesperson Jens Laerke told reporters in Geneva.

This comes a year after the UN agency reported that the number of such incidents was the highest since the first started recording them back in 2006. According to Laerke, Palestinian Bedouin and other herding communities were particularly vulnerable. Since the beginning of last year at least 399 herders have been displaced amid settler violence.

“Israeli settlements are illegal under international law,” said Laerke. He added, “They deepen humanitarian needs due to their impact on livelihoods, food security and access to essential services.”

Palestine: Clashes between Fatah & Hamas continue, Hezbollah Chief calls for halt to fighting | WION

After clashes continued between rival factions at a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, leaving 11 people dead, terror group Hezbollah has called for a halt to the proceedings.

Hassan Nasrallah, head of the group, in a televised address on Tuesday (August 1) urged the factions to keep aside their differences as the camp residents and their lives were being put in danger.

“This fighting must not continue because its repercussions are bad – for the camp’s residents, for the dear Palestinian people...for the south, for all of Lebanon,” said Nasrallah.

The Hezbollah chief added that anyone who could “pressure, say a word, make contact, make an effort” to secure a truce should do so.

What is happening in the camp?

Ein al-Hilweh, the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon which houses over 63,000 people has been the ground zero for clashes, ever since the leader of the Fatah faction and four of his bodyguards were killed by another Palestinian group.

Fatah released a statement in the aftermath and said the "abominable and cowardly crime" was aimed at damaging the "security and stability" of the Palestinian camps in Lebanon.

According to multiple reports, Fatah has been going hammer and tongs with the Islamist group, identified as Jund al-Sham. While 11 people were killed, over 40 others including children have been wounded due to the escalation in tensions.

However, the clashes that erupted last week have led to at least 2,000 people in the camp leaving the space, according to the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).
