Three Israelis shot, one seriously injured after Palestinian gunman opens fire in West Bank

Tel Aviv launched its biggest operation in the northern West bank city of Jenin early on the 3rd of July. Fierce gunbattles broke out between the Israeli troops and the Palestinian militants which continued until Israeli troops withdrew on Tuesday night. 12 Palestinians died and about 100 were injured, 20 of them critically, in Israeli army's biggest assault in two decades. Thousands have been forced to flee their homes. Tel Aviv calls Jenin "a city of refuge for terrorism" while the Palestinians have accused Israel of war crimes. In what was described as "first response" by the Islamic Jihad, seven Israelis were wounded in a car-ramming and stabbing attack in Tel Aviv on Tuesday. International community fears that Palestinian cities in the West Bank will see more intensive military attacks and security crackdowns in the coming days. Mohammed Saleh brings you this report.

West Bank raid: Israel army kills two Palestinian gunmen

Israeli military carried out cross-border strikes after two rockets were fired from southern Lebanon on Thursday (July 6), reported Reuters quoting sources on both sides. This incident has come just when tensions are high between Israel and the Arabs. This week, Israel conducted one the largest military incursions in decades in the occupied West Bank targetting the Jenin camp, a Palestinian military stronghold.

Two rockets were fired from Lebanon towards Israel, one of them landed in Lebanese territory and the second near a disputed area at the border.

The Israeli military initially said that there were no indications that any unusual incidents had taken place on its side of the border. But later it said that a projectile had exploded there. There wasn't any immediate report of damage.

"In response, the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) is currently striking the area in Lebanese territory from where the launch was carried out," a military statement said.

The Israeli military has not issued any special instructions to Israeli communities near the border. Israel usually orders civilians within range to take cover.

Reuters reported plumes of white smoke rising from the hilly south. A resident of Wazzani, the southern Lebanese village where one of the rockets fell, said artillery fire had hit there from the direction of Israel.

Lebanon's National News Agency reported some 15 shells fired from Israel had landed in Lebanon.

There was no claim of responsibility for the original reported rocket fire from Lebanon. Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati said he was following up on the issue with the commander of Lebanon's army.

The second rocket has reportedly landed near the disputed village of Ghajar. The village straddles the Israel-Lebanon border. The residents of this village profess allegiance to Syria.

No comments from Hezbollah

Hezbollah has expressed support for the Palestinian cause during this week's Israeli operation in Jenin. Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese group that controls southern Lebanon has fought several wars with Isreal.

There was no immediate comment incoming from Hezbollah.

In a separate statement, the armed group condemned what it called "dangerous measures" taken by Israeli forces in the northern part of Ghajar, which Lebanon considers to be its territory.

Hezbollah accused Israel of erecting a wire fence and building a cement wall. No comments from Hezbollah Hezbollah has expressed support for the Palestinian cause during this week's Israeli operation in Jenin. Lebanon's foreign ministry on Tuesday said it was concerned by the moves, saying they were creating a "new reality on the ground". Palestinian trying to smuggle sperm out of prison caught by Israeli guards

In a move that defies international opposition, Israel has granted approval for the construction of 5,700 new homes in Jewish settlements within the West Bank, marking a record-breaking annual high for settlement development under the government's six-month tenure.

Despite receiving criticism from the international community, which deems all settlement construction a violation of international law and recent Israeli commitments, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's administration has also authorised residency in three illegal outposts established by settlers without government approval, reported the Irish Times.

Netanyahu's government faces condemnation

Tensions between Israel and the United States have escalated as the Joe Biden administration increasingly voices its disapproval of Israel's settlement policy. The strained relations have been further exacerbated by the government's plans, seen as the most right-wing in Israel's history, to undermine the judiciary.

Simultaneously, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed his belief that Israel should curtail the Palestinian aspiration for an independent state. During a closed meeting of the Knesset parliament's foreign affairs and defence committee, he emphasised the importance of the Palestinian Authority (PA) and stated Israel's willingness to provide economic assistance to ensure its continuation. He noted that in areas where the PA functions effectively, it serves in lieu of Israeli authority.

Nabil Abu Rudeineh, spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, denounced Netanyahu's statement as evidence of Israel's rejection of international law. He argued that the Palestinian state exists and is recognised by over 140 countries, asserting that Israel's aggression against the Palestinian people cannot sustain the occupation indefinitely.
