Israel-Palestine unrest claims two more lives; teenager and mother of two become the latest casualties

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party has lost public support as per a poll which showed that the party is likely to lose more than a third of its seats if it goes into an election currently and won't be able to get a majority along with his hard-right coalition partners.

As the country continues to flare up over the government's controversial plan to tighten control over the Supreme Court which has been paused amid the escalating tension with the Palestinians, the poll carried out by Channel 13 News showed that more than two-thirds of the country's voters were unhappy with Netanyahu’s performance in office.

The poll indicated that Netanyahu’s Likud party would be able to clinch victory over 20 seats in the 120-member parliament of the country, which is a fall from the 32 seats he won last November.

The poll also stated that his religious-nationalist coalition would not be able to get a majority with 46 seats, which is a fall from 64.

If the elections are held in the current scenario, Benny Gantz's Blue and White party would emerge victorious with 29 seats, followed by Yair Lapid’s centrist party which would clinch victory over 21 seats, as per the survey conducted by Camil Fuchs.

When the people were asked about the performance of Netanyahu as prime minister, 71 per cent of the 699 respondents called it “not good” and 20 per cent agreed that it was “good”, reported Channel 13 News.

The survey was dismissed by the Likud party’s Boaz Bismuth.

“There was an amazing and very, very reliable poll on November 1, I still rely on it,” he said while speaking to Army Radio on Monday, as he referred to the last national election held which ended the political deadlock which was seen five elections in less than four years.

The government led by Netanyahu had pledged to overhaul the judicial system, however, the legislation was paused to allow for compromise discussions with the opposition political parties after weeks of nationwide protests.

The supporters of the government's plan stated that the change will help restore the balance between the different branches of the government. However, the critics stated that the plan will only weaken the courts and unbridled power will be handed to the government.

Israeli army strikes Lebanon as promised retaliatory measure

The United States says that its ally Israel has the right to defend itself after a barrage of rockets from Lebanon following soaring tension over Jerusalem. Molly Gambhir reports.

The Israeli military on Friday informed that two women were killed while a third was seriously injured in a shooting attack after a gunman opened fire on a vehicle in West Bank.

The Israeli military on Friday informed that two women were killed while a third was seriously injured in a shooting attack after a gunman opened fire on a vehicle in West Bank. The attacker targetted the car near the Hamra junction in the northern part of the Jordan Valley. The Magen David Adom emergency service confirmed the death of the two Israeli women. The army has swung into action by sweeping the area, blocking the roads and launching a manhunt for the assailant. “A shooting attack was carried out on a vehicle at the Hamra Junction. IDF [Israel Defense Force] soldiers are searching the area,” the military said in a statement. Israel attacks Lebanon following provocation Earlier in the day, it was reported that Israel launched missile strikes on Lebanon and Gaza Strip after the Palestine side fired around 34 rockets from the region. According to Israeli media, it was the biggest salvo of fire from Lebanon since Jerusalem fought the 34-day war with the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah in 2006. Moreover, this was the first instance Israel had fired missiles on Lebanon territory since April last year. WATCH | Al-Aqsa mosque: Violence as Israeli police raid Jerusalem holy site × Israeli police raid al-Aqsa The development comes hot on the heels of Israeli police clashing with Palestinians at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque on Wednesday (April 5). Experts had feared that the violence in the compound could trigger a cross-border exchange of fire in Gaza and lead to instances of increased violence. “Israel’s raid into al-Aqsa mosque, its assault on worshippers, is a slap to recent US efforts which tried to create calm and stability during the month of Ramadan,” a spokesperson for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said. ALSO READ | Clashes erupt again at Jerusalem's al-Aqsa Mosque, six injured This is not the first instance when violence has escalated in the region. In February, Israel carried out a rare daytime arrest operation that triggered fighting in the occupied West Bank, killing at least 11 people and wounding more than 100. Prior to the ground operation, both sides had fired projectiles that caused significant damage. At the time, many dubbed it as one of the deadliest escalations in the occupied West Bank since 2005. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the situation in the Palestinian territory was the 'most combustible in a year', adding that tensions remained 'sky high'. "Our immediate priority must be to prevent further escalation, reduce tensions and restore calm," said Guterres. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

The mosque compound in the old city of east Jerusalem has previously seen clashes and violence between Palestinians and Israelis. Israeli jets strike Hamas weapons manufacturing sites after rockets reportedly fired from Gaza strip

A 26-year-old named Mohammed Elasibi was shot dead near the disputed Al Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem by the Israeli police, on Saturday (April 1). According to the police, the man grabbed the gun of a police officer and fired it twice, which prompted the unit to shoot him dead, reported Times of Israel.

The incident has also reportedly been described as a terrorist attack by Israeli forces. The police later identified the individual as a 26-year-old resident of Hura, a Bedouin town in southern Israel. Subsequently, lawmaker Mansour Abbas whose party United Arab List is popular in that area said that he was a medical student and questioned the police account, as per Reuters.

Additionally, many former senior Israeli police officials also questioned the account as the unit who was present at the scene said that the incident took place at a spot not covered by security cameras. The incident has also reportedly been described as a terrorist attack by Israeli forces. Man shot dead after grabbing Israeli police’s gun near Al Aqsa mosque

An Israeli man was injured in a suspected terror attack in the West Bank town of Huwara on Sunday (March 19), as per local media reports. The Israeli ambulance service Magen David Adom said a man in his 30s was seriously wounded in the shooting attack. This comes as the Israeli and Palestinian officials met in Egypt for talks, on Sunday, to prevent the surging violence from further escalating during the Muslim holy month of Ramzan which begins next week.

Suspected terror attack in Huwara

According to Magen David Adom, the two people found at the scene were a man and a woman in their 30s. The woman, later identified as his wife, was taken to a hospital for treatment of traumatic shock, while the man was in critical condition.

“We met up with the vehicle at the Einebus junction along with IDF medical personnel. We provided medical treatment to a man in his 30s who was seriously injured by a gunshot to his upper body and to a woman who fainted from anxiety,” said senior Magen David Adom medic, Moshe Meir Shimon, who was also present at the scene of the incident, reported the Jerusalem Post.

“We quickly transferred them to ambulances and evacuated them to the hospital, as the man was in serious condition,” Shimon added. The identity of the victims has not been revealed. Meanwhile, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that it received a report of a “shooting incident” in Huwara and that it has launched a manhunt for the suspected terrorist, as per local media reports.

According to initial reports on the incident, at least 20 bullets were fired at the car. The Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikvah, which is treating the victim said that he was sedated and on a ventilator with gunshot wounds to his head and shoulder but is since in a stable condition, reported the Times of Israel.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took to Twitter and said he was praying for the “wounded hero” who succeeded in shooting the terrorist attacker supposedly confirming some media reports which said that the man who was shot managed to shoot back at the terrorist and injured him. Later the Israeli army confirmed that either soldiers or the victim shot the suspected Palestinian gunman who was the arrested by the Israeli forces.

Israeli and Palestinian officials meeting in Egypt

On Sunday, the officials from the two countries met in the resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt. In a statement, Egypt’s foreign ministry said that the meeting “aims to support dialogue between the Palestinian and Israeli sides to work to stop unilateral actions and escalation, and break the existing cycle of violence and achieve calm”, reported Reuters.

It added, that a reduction in violence could create a climate for the “resumption of the peace process”. The move has also been backed by the United States and Jordan. The meeting comes weeks after talks in the Jordanian coastal city of Aqaba brokered by the US has seemingly failed to stop the violence despite the two sides vowing to de-escalate.

Recently, the Israeli-occupied West Bank has witnessed a surge in violence with increased military raids by the Israeli army and a settler rampage in the area last month amid a rise in attacks by Palestinians. There have been some clashes between Israeli police and Palestinians particularly near the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem around Ramzan which also coincides with the Jewish holiday, Passover and Christian Easter.

Israeli man injured in West Bank shooting attack; officials meet in Egypt to prevent violence ahead of Ramzan

Ali Ramzi al-Aswad, a commander in the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad was allegedly "assassinated" in Syria on Sunday (March 19), news agency The Associated Press reported.

In a statement, the Al-Quds Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Jihad group, said that the 31-year-old al-Aswad was killed in the Damascus countryside.

The group referred to Israel pinning blame as it said that the Palestinian militant group commander died in a "cowardly assassination with bullets bearing the fingerprints of the Zionist enemy."

However, the alleged assassination was neither confirmed nor denied by Israel.

The West refers to the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine as Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and also perceives it as threat. PIJ was reportedly formed in 1981.

The Islamic Jihad said in a statement that al-Aswad joined the organisation as a young man when his family had settled in the refugee camps in Syria after they had been displaced from the city of Haifa in 1948, the AP report mentioned.

In the past few years, Israel carried out hundreds of strikes on targets inside government-controlled parts of Syria. Last month, reports claimed that Syrian officials said that at least five people were killed in airstrikes on residential areas in Damascus. The Syrian officials blamed Israel for the strikes.

As quoted by AP, an Islamic Jihad official warned Israel in a statement that there would be "a decisive response without delay to any assassination attempt (on) the leaders of the resistance."

The Israeli army on Sunday informed that three Palestinian gunmen were shot dead in the northern West Bank near Nablus. The armed gunmen had opened fire on the Israeli soldiers, forcing the latter to return the favour, it added. "Three armed gunmen were neutralised during the exchange of fire and an additional armed gunman surrendered himself to the forces and was apprehended," the army said in a statement. The incident comes in the backdrop of Israeli forces neutralising three Palestinians in a raid in Jenin on Thursday. “During the operation, shots were fired at the [Israeli] forces from the car of the wanted persons, after which we responded and killed three armed men who were in the car,” said the Israeli forces at the time. Last month, Palestinian militants fired as many as six rockets from the Gaza Strip towards Israel's southern region. The firing of the projectiles came less than 24 hours after Israel carried out a rare daytime arrest operation that triggered fighting in the occupied West Bank, killing at least 11 people and wounding more than 100. Experts dubbed it as one of the deadliest escalations in the occupied West Bank since 2005. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the situation in the Palestinian territory was the 'most combustible in a year', adding that tensions remained 'sky high'. "Our immediate priority must be to prevent further escalation, reduce tensions and restore calm," said Guterres.
