The film stars Greta Lee and Teo Yoo who play childhood sweethearts who separate when one of their families migrates to Canada and subsequently the US. The theme of the story is based on the Korean concept of inyeon where two people's lives intertwine between the past and the present.&nbsp;Inyeon is popularly understood to mean something like fate or destiny, referring to the ties between people over the course of their lives.&nbsp;The film has two childhood friends and lovers reconnecting with each other after every 12 years even as they built their lives separately in different countries. The film then beautifully highlights that even if two individuals deeply love each other they may not end up together in life.&nbsp;

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences consists of a team of around 9000 filmmakers and film professionals. This team of professionals are the people who vote for the Oscars. There are two ways how a film can be selected for The Academy, either it has to go through a rigorous application process or should be invited to join The Academy directly (though almost every nominee gets an invite).

The organisation itself is divided into 17 specific branches with a dedicated branch for actors, directors, editors and many others.

Nominees for each category are selected by votes from members of these specific branches. For instance, only actors are allowed to select nominees for acting categories; likewise, directors get to select the nominees for Best Director.

But here's a little catch, when it comes to the Best Picture category, everyone gets to vote for this category.

While submitting a list of preferred nominees, Academy members rank them according to preference. The nomination ballots are initially sorted based on the first-place ranking of the voters. If a selection receives a certain number of first-place votes (sometimes referred to as the "magic number"), it becomes a nominee.

Korean-Canadian director&nbsp;Celine&nbsp;Song&nbsp;says her life as an immigrant inspired the Oscar-nominated film Past Lives. She shared this piece of information while&nbsp;speaking ahead of the film's release in South Korean cinemas on Wednesday.

Specifically, she drew on a conversation between her friend visiting from South Korea and her husband at a bar in New York,&nbsp;Song&nbsp;told a press conference in the capital, Seoul.

"As a bilingual, I was translating between the two who couldn't communicate and it made me realise I was translating some parts of my identity and history," she added.

The film, which centres on two old friends, Nora and Hae Sung, who reunite in New York decades after having parted ways as children in South Korea, has drawn critical acclaim since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last year.

It won a Best Picture nomination at this year's Academy Awards, competing against the likes of Oppenheimer&nbsp;and Anatomy Of A Fall&nbsp;as well as for Best Original Screenplay.

The film also won the award for best feature at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards.

Murphy, who is a popular contender in the Best Actor category at the Oscars 2024, has revealed that he prefers to talk to fans as opposed to providing photographic evidence of their meet.&nbsp; 
 
"I don’t do photos," he told a fan who approached him during his interview with the magazine, and then explained to the interviewer, "Once I started doing that, it changed my life." 
 
Murphy says it's not because he is not appreciative of his fans but he seeks to really make the moment count. 
 
"I just think it’s better to say hello and have a little conversation," he said. "I tell that to a lot of people, you know, actor friends of mine, and they’re just like, 'I feel so bad.' But you don’t need a photo record of everywhere you’ve been in a day." 
 
Murphy admits he has only "a couple of"&nbsp;actor friends, but the Oppenheimer star said that "the Majority of my buddies are not in the business". 
 
"I also love not working," he continued. "And I think for me a lot of research as an actor is just f---ing living, and, you know, having a normal life doing regular things and just being able to observe, and be, in that sort of lovely flow of humanity". 
 
Unlike other actors who have settled in Hollywood, Murphy has maintained a safe distance and resided in London and is now settled in Dublin.&nbsp; 
 
Murphy lived in London in his 20s and 30s and in 2015 the Irish native moved to Dublin with his wife, Yvonne McGuinness, and their two sons: Malachy, 18, and Aran, 16. The family now lives near the sea.

Trust the Academy to take a jibe at itself for&nbsp;royally snubbing Barbie at the upcoming Oscar Awards 2024. On Tuesday, the Academy dropped a Barbie-themed trailer for the awards ceremony which features this year's host Jimmy Kimmel along with some cast members of the Barbie movie.&nbsp; 
 
Not only does it take a jab at how the Academy failed to recognise Greta Gerwig's film in some major categories but also pokes fun at itself. Along with Kimmel, the hilarious and savage trailer also features Ryan Gosling,&nbsp;America Ferrera, Helen Mirren and Kate McKinnon.&nbsp; 
 
The announcement video has a lost Kimmel finding his way to Weird&nbsp;Barbie's (Kate McKinnon) home asking for her help to find directions to Oscarland. When she draws him a map, he fails to read it and so the two then embark on a journey together to Oscarland. On the way they encounter some nominees, make fun of Matt Damon (Kimmel has to, of course) and then reach their desired destination. 
 
Once they land in&nbsp;Oscarland, America Ferrera appears on the red carpet and delivers a monologue, a nod to her viral Barbie monologue, to encourage Jimmy Kimmel and tell him how tough a job it is to host the Oscars. However, Jimmy gets it wrong and says, “What you’re saying is hosting the Oscars is harder than being a woman," making things awkward for all. 
 
Soon, Ryan Gosling appears and changes the subject to the Oscars' tradition of having In and Out Burgers and fries. Kimmel points out that the Oscars tradition of having the meal comes after winning an Oscar to which Gosling quips he probably will not win it. 
For the uninitiated, Gosling and Ferrera are both nominated for their roles in Barbie in the supporting acting category.&nbsp;

When she draws him a map, he fails to read it and so the two then embark on a journey together to Oscarland. On the way they encounter some nominees, make fun of Matt Damon (Kimmel has to, of course) and then reach their desired destination. Once they land in Oscarland, America Ferrera appears on the red carpet and delivers a monologue, a nod to her viral Barbie monologue, to encourage Jimmy Kimmel and tell him how tough a job it is to host the Oscars. However, Jimmy gets it wrong and says, “What you’re saying is hosting the Oscars is harder than being a woman," making things awkward for all. Soon, Ryan Gosling appears and changes the subject to the Oscars' tradition of having In and Out Burgers and fries. Kimmel points out that the Oscars tradition of having the meal comes after winning an Oscar to which Gosling quips he probably will not win it. On Tuesday, actress Lily Gladstone created history as she became the first Native American to earn a nomination for Best Actress at Oscars 2024. The actress knew she wanted to be somewhere special when the nominations were announced and so she spent it in Oklahoma with the Osage community, where the real-life version of her character lived and where the film is based. 
 
“I decided that I wanted to be on the Osage reservation, should this news come in today,” Gladstone said in an interview shortly after receiving her historic nomination. “I wanted to be as close to Mollie Kyle and her family as I could be. So I’m here in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. Once things wrap up, I think I’m gonna load up and drive out to Fairfax and Gray Horse and pay my respects there.”

Gladstone’s nomination was hardly a surprise. The accolades for the 37-year-old actor’s performance have been flowing since the film came out in October, and she even won a Golden Globe earlier this month - a first for Native American actress. She’s had both time and opportunity to articulate what feels historic about this moment and remains just as passionate.

“It’s what I’ve been saying this whole time and I still absolutely feel it,” she said. “It happens to be that I’m carrying this honour right now … (but) it’s all so long overdue. It’s a real moment of restoration, placing Indigenous talent in these roles, spotlighting their humanity. … I think it is shattering a lot of stereotypes people have about Indigenous women, particularly Native American women." 
 
“We’re taking our place where we belong,” she said of Indigenous actors and storytellers. “And it’s taken a long time to get here. But it’s so necessary.”

Gladstone grew up between Seattle and the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana and learned the Osage language for the film. She added that the recognition comes “in a time where across the country, stories like this are getting buried, are being considered too woke.” So she is gratified, she said, “to be in a film that cements this history in the public eye, that makes it accessible for people to see, to get inside of in a way that only film can bring you inside of, as brutal as it can be, as heartbreaking and challenging as it can be.”

Killers of the Flower Moon, adapted from David Grann’s real-life whodunit of the same name, focuses more than the book did on the relationship between Mollie and her husband, Ernest Burkhart (Leonardo DiCaprio), who loves her but somehow also participates in a sinister plot with his uncle (Robert De Niro, also nominated) to eliminate her family and acquire their oil-rich land.

But Gladstone pointed out that the film was not only about what she called the “horrible, complicated, skewed love” between Mollie and Ernest. It is also, she said, about “the love that Mollie and her community had for each other. The one that carries everybody forward.”

“We carry forward by passing our stories forward, bypassing our sense of self and our knowledge forward, by adapting and growing,” she said. “So having the story be passed forward on such a massive scale, I hope it just ignites a curiosity that maybe wasn’t there before for most people.”

Hollywood's biggest night, the Oscar Awards is a month away. The Academy, which organises the awards each year, announced the nominees of Oscar 2024 on Tuesday and Christopher Nolan's film Oppenheimer predictably dominated the nomination list.

The film earned nominations in almost all major categories including direction for Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy and Best Film. And while Oppenheimer earned Oscar nods, Barbie- which was released the same day last year- was sidelined once again with Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie missing out on getting nominated. Barbie did earn a nomination in the Best Film category.&nbsp;

The nominees were announced in Los Angeles and the event was hosted by Zazie Beetz and Jack Quaid.

Winners will be revealed Sunday, March 10, 2024&nbsp;at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, with Jimmy Kimmel returning to host.

Two of the most critically acclaimed Indian movies of 2023 – Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s heartrending drama 12th Fail&nbsp;and the intense survival drama 2018 are part of the list of 265 films eligible for Oscars 2024.

Did they qualify for the International Feature Film category? 
 
Many would recall that no Indian film was named in the recently announced 2024 Oscars Shortlist. But that was for the International Feature Film’ category. In fact, 2018 was India's official entry in this category this year and did not make the cut.&nbsp;

Hollywood veteran Mel Brooks was honoured with the lifetime achievement Oscar on Tuesday. The 97-year-old received an Oscar more than half a century after he won his only Academy Award for The Producers. 
 
At a black-tie gala, Brooks -- who memorably sent up Adolf Hitler in the seminal satire The Producers, as well as exposing racial bigotry in films like Blazing Saddles -- joked that he felt bad about the fate of his previous Oscar which he won for best original screenplay.&nbsp; 
 
"I miss it so much. I never should have sold it," he said, to raucous laughter in the ballroom. "I won't sell this one, I swear to God!" Brooks added.

The legendary US comic and filmmaker is one of the select few entertainers to win an Oscar, Emmy, Tony, and Grammy -- collectively called an EGOT -- across a career spanning eight decades.

His latest honour came at the Governors Awards, hosted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which each year honours four industry veterans, many of whom are felt to have not received their dues at the regular Oscars.&nbsp;

The 96th Academy Awards unveiled its shortlisted names in the following 10 categories: documentary feature film, documentary short film, international feature film, makeup and hairstyling, music (original score), music (original song), animated short film, live-action short film, sound and visual effects.

Among the films that made the most number of mentions in these categories include Barbie, Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Color Purple and The Zone of Interest.&nbsp;

Now that the shortlists have been announced, the nominations voting for the same will run from January 11 to 16. The official nominations announcement is set for January 23, 2024.&nbsp;

The Oscars 2024 ceremony will take place on March 10 at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC. Jimmy Kimmel is returning as host.
