Ukraine hands out ‘Oscars awards’ for brave display against Russian forces

It was a night that even the greatest movie writers wouldn't have been able to script this right. There were jokes, jibes, emotional speeches, historical wins and even smacking and abusing - all on the Oscars 2022 stage.

It was a night when Will Smith smacked comedian Chris Rock live on stage for making a joke on his wife Jada Pinkett Smith. 'Keep my wife's name out of your f-----ng mouth' said the actor as he went back to his seat as the entire Dolby theatre hushed into silence. Minutes later Smith took home his first Oscar as he won in the Best Actor category for 'King Richard'.

The actor delivered an emotional speech, apologised to his fellow nominees and the academy and hoped that they would call him back again.

Jessica Chastain was the lone nominee in the acting category for the film 'The Eyes Of Tammy Faye' but that was enough as Chastain too won her first Oscar in the Best Actress category. She spoke about love, raised awareness about suicide awareness and LGBTQ rights in her winning speech.

The night was historic as 'CODA' won Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actor award. Troy Kastur became the second deaf actor in the history of Oscars to win an award. Kastur dedicated his win to the deaf and the disabled community. As the team of 'CODA' went up on stage to collect the Best Picture award, the audience cheered and applauded them in sign language and gave them a standing ovation.

The supporting actress went to Ariana DeBose for playing the spirited Anita, who sings 'America' in Steven Spielberg's remake of 'West Side Story.'

Meanwhile, 'Dune' swept almost the entire technical category as it picked Best Cinematography, Best Sound Design, Best Visual Effects Oscars among others.

The night had Amy Schummer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes taking jabs at almost everything and everyone as hosts. Hall even did an impromptu COVID check on the most eligible bachelors in the room which included actor Simu Liu, Bradley Cooper, Jason Momoa and Timothee Chalamet.

The night saw the reunion of two iconic films - 'The Godfather' and 'Pulp Fiction.' Francis Ford Coppola, Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino came to celebrate the 50 years of the cult classic and extended their support to Ukraine. Meanwhile, John Travolta and Uma Thurman danced as Samuel L Jackson celebrated 18 years of 'Pulp Fiction' as they gave out the Best Actor award.

The Academy also gave a silent salute to Ukraine during the ceremony. But rather than turning the Oscars ceremony into a megaphone for messages about Ukraine, the show's directors opted for a silent message that did not mention Russia, which launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine 31 days ago.

Oscars 2022: 'CODA' wins big on a night of punches, jabs and reunions

Hollywood shared a little bit of its big night with the people of Ukraine on Sunday, using text on a screen to ask the world for financial contributions for those suffering from the Russian assault.

"We`d like to have a moment of silence to show our support for the people of Ukraine currently facing invasion, conflict and prejudice within their own borders," read the message posted on screen just before a commercial break.

The message said millions of families needed food, medical care, clean water and emergency services and asked viewers for humanitarian aid.
"We ask you to support Ukraine in any way you are able," read the silent message, adding the hashtag #StandWithUkraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" that Moscow says is aimed at demilitarizing and "denazifying" its neighbor. Ukraine and its Western allies call this a pretext for unprovoked invasion.

Before the show, there were suggestions that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy might make an appearance through video link, as he has done in parliaments around the world.

Zelenskiy has been urging the West to give Ukraine tanks, planes and missiles to help fend off Russian forces and to impose a no-fly zone.
Just before the Oscar plea for aid, Ukrainian-born actress Mila Kunis made a veiled reference to the trouble in her native land.

"Recent global events have left many of us feeling gutted. Yet when you witness the strength and dignity of those facing such devastation, it`s impossible to not be moved by their resilience. One cannot help but be in awe of those who find strength to keep fighting through unimaginable darkness," Kunis said, setting up a nominee for best song.

Kunis, 38, was born in the Ukrainian city of Chernivtsi and immigrated to the United States at age 7. She has been active in raising money for Ukraine.

On March 20, Zelenskiy praised Kunis and her husband, actor Ashton Kutcher, on Twitter, saying they were "among the first to respond to our grief" and had raised $35 million for Ukrainian causes.

"Grateful for their support. Impressed by their determination. They inspire the world. #StandWithUkraine," Zelenskiy tweeted.
In another understated moment, actor Jason Momoa wore a handkerchief in blue and yellow, the colors of the Ukrainian flag.

Hammerstein first won in 1942 with composer Jerome Kern for the song 'The Last Time I Saw Paris' and snagged a second win not long after the first win, in 1946 for 'It Might As Well Be Spring' for the film 'State Fair' with his longtime collaborator Richard Rodgers, with whom Hammerstein delivered a string of Broadway musical mega-hits.
Did you know there's only one person named 'Oscar' who has won an Oscar?

Hollywood star Kristen Stewart surely knows how to keep people entertained as she gave us some high fashion at the Oscars 2022 red carpet. An ambassador for luxury label Chanel, Kristen Stewart turned up in a custom black satin jacket with matching shorts, a custom white chiffon blouse and Chanel shoes. Keeping her hair swept to one side and smiling for all the cameras, Kristen looked ever-so-confident at The Academy Awards ceremony night.

Kristen turned up for the red carpet with fiancée Dylan Meyer who wore matching outfits with her.

She also showed off her eccentric side to anyone who’s concerned as she changed from heels to a more comfortable pair of socks and loafers after the red carpet. This is not the first time she has ditched heels. Previously, Kristen didn’t pay any heed to the Cannes Film Festival dress code when she had thrown off heels.

Check out Live Updates here. Oscars 2022: Kristen Stewart has not one but two fashionable moments at the red carpet

Ariana DeBose won her first Academy Award on Sunday for her supporting role as Anita in Steven Spielberg`s remake of the classic musical "West Side Story."

A relative newcomer to feature films, 31-year-old DeBose earned mainstream acclaim for her lively portrayal of Anita, an outspoken Puerto Rican woman who showcases her singing and dancing talents in the song "America."

She also won a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild award and British Academy Film Award for her performance.
"It was the summer of a lifetime and I am most privileged and grateful to spend it with all of you," DeBose said in accepting her award.

DeBose, citing her membership in both the Afro-Latina and queer communities, said the award showed that "there is indeed a place for us," a reference to a song in "West Side Story."

North Carolina-born DeBose trained in dance and had roles in Broadway productions including "Hamilton" and "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical" before appearing in the Netflix television musical "The Prom" as a cheerleader struggling to come out of the closet.

"I am America," she told OUT Magazine in November 2021. "I am damn near a member of just about every marginalized community."

This is the second time the role of Anita has earned the best supporting actress award: Rita Moreno in 1962 became the first Latina actress to win an Oscar for her performance in the original "West Side Story." Moreno, 90, joined Spielberg`s remake as drugstore owner Valentina, a new character written just for her.

DeBose`s fellow supporting actress nominees were Kirsten Dunst for "Power of the Dog," Aunjanue Ellis for "King Richard," Judi Dench for "Belfast" and Jessie Buckley for "The Lost Daughter."
The Academy issues statement over Will Smith-Chris Rock slapping incident

Oscars 2022 will always be remembered for Will Smith's beef with comedian Chris Rock. The awards ceremony took a dramatic turn when Smith walked up on stage and slapped Rock for joking about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith's baldness, intimating that she was getting ready to star in 'G.I. Jane 2' a movie where Demi Moore shaved her head bald. Pinkett Smith has been open about her struggles with alopecia a condition that causes hair loss.

Smith was then seen looking irate back at his seat and yelling at Rock twice to "keep my wife's name out of your f------ mouth."

Turns out that Rock had made fun of Pinkett Smith before in 2016 Oscars and the Smith have reportedly had a problem with the comedian for years now.

In 2016, Rock was the host of that year's Oscars. During his opening monologue, he had made jokes about Smith and his wife for boycotting the event over the lack of black nominees.

The couple had spearheaded a campaign of boycotting the awards that year after the Academy refused to acknowledge performances of black actors across the categories.

"But what happened this year? People went mad. Spike Lee went mad… Jada Pinkett Smith went mad. Will Smith went mad. Everyone went mad," Rock said during his monologue. " Jada said she's not coming, protesting. Isn't she on a TV show? Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna's panties — I wasn't invited."

"That's not an invitation I would turn down," Rock continued. "But I understand. I understand you're mad – Jada's mad her man Will was not nominated for 'Concussion.'" Rock said, referring to Smith's 2015 football film. "I get it. Tell the truth. I get it. It's not fair that Will was this good and didn't get nominated. It's also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for 'Wild Wild West.'"

On Sunday night, Smith went on to pick up his first Oscar for his performance in 'King Richard' and gave an emotional speech while accepting the award apologising to the academy and his fellow nominees but chose not to mention Rock.

Oscars 2022: 9 interesting facts around this year's awards ceremony

The Academy is doing damage control. Days after 'West Side Story' actress Rachel Zegler revealed that she had not received an invite to attend the Oscar awards ceremony on March 27, the Academy has extended an invite to Zegler and made her a presenter.

The invite to present comes after Zegler took to Instagram on Saturday to share a bunch of photos recapping the last few months and revealed that she wasn't given a ticket to attend the 94th Academy Awards.

"A quarter of the year well spent," Zegler captioned the post, which saw the 'West Side Story' star working, enjoying some downtime and attending several awards shows in her finest evening wear.

When a fan commented, 'Can't wait to see what you’ll be wearing on Oscar night,' Zelger replied, "I'm not invited, so sweatpants and my boyfriend's flannel."

Helmed by Steven Spielberg, 'West Side Story' has been nominated in various categories including 'Best Film' at the Oscars.

Post her revelation, fans quickly took to social media to question the Academy on why the star had not been sent an invite.

The 20-year-old actress seemed just as confused and even tried to obtain a ticket to attend the ceremony.

"Idk y’all I have tried it all but it doesn’t seem to be happening I will root for 'West Side Story' from my couch and be proud of the work we so tirelessly did 3 years ago," Zegler said.

"I hope some last-minute miracle occurs and I can celebrate our film in person but hey, that’s how it goes sometimes, I guess. thanks for all the shock and outrage -- I’m disappointed, too. but that’s okay. so proud of our movie," she added.

On Sunday, after outrage poured on Twitter, Zegler took to Twitter to ask fans to 'respect the process".

"My goodness, folks!! appreciate all the support, I really really do. We live in such unprecedented times, and a lot of work behind the scenes goes into making movie magic happen. that goes for film productions (like the one I am so lucky to be currently shooting in london)…," Zegler began.
