Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, a lady succumbed to the injuries in cross-border shelling in Uri area of North Kashmir's Baramulla district on Thursday night.

BREAKING | Heavy Shelling In Uri, Kupwara, Poonch Areas Of Jammu And Kashmir

As India successfully repelled Pakistan’s strikes across Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat on Thursday (May 08) night, reports emerged that Islamabad may have deployed its F-16 fighter jets during the attack.
There were even unconfirmed claims that at least one Pakistani jet was downed and a pilot captured. This has once again brought into question whether Pakistan is allowed to use its F-16 fleet against India at all.

What controls Pakistan’s use of F-16s?

The F-16s in Pakistan’s fleet come from the United States, which has placed strict conditions on how these aircraft can be used. These fighter jets were sold under the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme. Every such sale comes with an End-Use Monitoring (EUM) agreement, meaning Pakistan cannot freely use or modify the jets without approval.
There are also embedded US teams on the ground in Pakistan, part of programmes like Golden Sentry and Blue Lantern, whose job is to ensure American technology is not misused. These teams monitor the deployment of jets and weapons around the clock.

Under these agreements, Pakistan is barred from using F-16s or US-made weapons like the AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles in conventional warfare unless Washington explicitly approves.
The aircraft are to be used only in counterterrorism missions, typically in Pakistan’s western tribal regions, and not in direct state-to-state conflict.
So, while US documents don’t name India specifically, there is a clear understanding: F-16s are not meant to be used against India in war-like situations.

What happened in 2019?

This isn’t the first time questions have been raised. After the 2019 Balakot air strikes, US officials accused Pakistan of breaking its F-16 agreement. In Dec 2019, media reports (citing leaked documents) revealed a U.S. letter of reprimand sent in August 2019 to PAF Chief ACM Mujahid Khan, warning Islamabad it risked “jeopardising [our] shared security” by moving F-16s to unauthorised bases. That letter was a rare public rebuke, showing just how seriously Washington views any misuse of these jets.

What happens if Pakistan breaks the rules?

If Pakistan misuses the F-16s again, the US can cut off support or suspend agreements. Since the jets require regular maintenance and parts from American suppliers, such a move would affect the operational readiness of Pakistan’s fleet.
Also, Congressional pressure in Washington has been building for stricter oversight. This makes it harder for Pakistan to justify the use of F-16s in a scenario like the current conflict with India.

What’s the US position now?

The US government has not formally banned Pakistan from using F-16s against India, but it has made its expectations clear. As recently as 2022, the US justified continued F-16 support for Pakistan by calling it a “counterterrorism partner,” not a frontline force in conventional wars. The focus remains on fighting insurgents.

Indo-Pak War | US 'not going to get involved'; Turkey 'concerned': World reacts to Pakistan’s failed attack on India

India’s missile arsenal is among the world’s best. With missiles like BrahMos, Agni, and Pralay, India can flatten enemy bases in just minutes. These missiles are a key part of India’s defence and Operation Sindoor.

Operation Sindoor: India's top 5 missiles capable of striking Pakistan in a wartime scenario

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply after Pakistan launched a drone and missile attack targeting several Indian cities. Indian defence systems swiftly responded, intercepting the attack.
After Pakistan's failed strikes on India since the night of May 8 a day after India's Operation Sindoor to avenge Pahalgam terror attacks, there have been unverified reports that that India shot down a Pakistani Air Force AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control Systems) aircraft, which was operating inside Punjab province in Pakistan.
This has created a lot of curiosity about AWACS. So what are AWACS?

What exactly are AWACS aircraft?

AWACS are specialised planes fitted with a large rotating radar dome on top. These aircraft serve as early warning systems in the sky, detecting threats from much farther away than ground-based radars.
Due to the Earth’s curvature, land-based systems can only see so far. AWACS bypass this by staying airborne, allowing them to track aircraft, missiles, and other threats across wide areas. They act as a force multiplier, offering command and control over air operations.

India-Pak tensions: Pakistan targets civilians near LoC

India's Defence Ministry said that Pakistan's attempts for an aerial attack on India's military targets were neutralised by deploying the Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems. The UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) Grid System refers to the Digital Sky Platform's airspace map created by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This system governs where drones can operate across Indian airspace using a color-coded airspace map that divides the country into zones.

The work of a UAS (Unmanned Aircraft System) is to perform tasks using a drone (unmanned aircraft) combined with its ground control system and communication links. UAS are used for aerial surveillance, monitoring, mapping and surveying.
India's UAS grid divides airspace into three major zones:
1. Green Zone:No prior approval needed to fly drones (up to certain altitudes, usually 120 meters AGL).
2. Yellow Zone: Controlled airspace. Requires Air Traffic Control (ATC) or Digital Sky permission to fly.
3.Red Zone: No drone operations allowed without special permission from DGCA/MoD/MHA. Includes sensitive areas like military installations, borders, and strategic zones.

India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed a press conference on Thursday (May 8) said that the escalation of the situation happened on April 22 when innocent lives were killed in Pahalgam terror attack. He named and shamed Pakistani ministers for their support to terrorism and terror groups in multiple TV interviews. Misri said that Pakistan's admission of terror speaks for itself and the neibouring country has proven its track-record in harbouring terrorists to the world via television interviews.
Misri was referring to the interviews by Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. While Dar objected to mention of TRF in UNSC statetment, Bhutto admitted Pakistan has a past related to terrorism and Khawaja Asif confessed that his country is involved in "dirty things."
Misri also slammed Pakistan army chief Gen Asim Munir who described Kashmir as the "jugular vein" of his country and invoked the two-nation theory propounded by Pakistan’s founder, MA Jinnah in his speech on April 16. Col Sofiya Qureshi, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperso Randhir Jaiswal were also present in the briefing.

Pakistan admits supporting terrorists

1. Former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has confessed about Pakistan's past "as far as extremist groups are concerned". What he essentially referred to is Islamabad's historical link with terror groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammad, etc. His admission comes after the country's Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar echoed the same and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif inadvertently showed the country's support to the terror groups.
2. Dar admitted that Islamabad had an objection to the "condemnation of The Resistance Front (TRF)" in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) statement and they made sure that the reference to TRF was removed from the statement. A terror attack on April 22 in Baisaran Valley of Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam district killed 26 tourists. An offshoot of the banned Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) - The Resistance Front (TRF) - claimed responsibility for the attack.
After the attack, India launched a series of actions against Pakistan. The Indian government put into abeyance the Indus Waters Treaty, expelled its diplomats, called back Indian officials from Islamabad, and closed the Attari border, its airspace for Pakistani flights and ships, parcels and imports from Pakistan. India News, South Asia | Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri in a press conference named and shamed Pakistani ministers for their support to terrorism and terror groups support to terrorism and terror groups in multiple TV interviews

While Dar objected to mention of TRF in UNSC statetment, Bhutto admitted Pakistan has a past related to terrorism and Khawaja Asif confessed that his country is involved in "dirty things." Misri also slammed Pakistan army chief Gen Asim Munir who described Kashmir as the "jugular vein" of his country and invoked the two-nation theory propounded by Pakistan’s founder, MA Jinnah in his speech on April 16. Col Sofiya Qureshi, Wing Commander Vyomika Singh and Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperso Randhir Jaiswal were also present in the briefing. This support of Islamabad for TRF - who claimed responsibility for the Pahalgam terror attack - came days after Pakistan said they had nothing to do with the attack. 3. India-Pak tensions: Several flights cancelled, airports closed. But what is NOTAM? Know origins of term

Operation Sindoor Indo-Pak war clouds - After Pahalgam terror attack avenged, Pakistan lies about blasts: At around 2 am on Thursday (May 8), I was woken up by a phone call from a colleague who said that loud sounds were heard in the north Indian city of Amritsar in India's northern Punjab state. Upon checking, it was reported as either Indian Air Force sorties taking off, or Pakistan attacking India in response to Operation Sindoor the previous night, which avenged the Pahalgam terror attack of April 22 that had killed 26 Indians. A misinformation campaign from Pakistan ensued in the morning of May 8, with claims that it had shot down drones from India in various cities. By evening, India spoke: Blasts that were heard in Pakistan were from India destroying Pakistan's China-made air defence system, and what was heard in Amritsar was the failed misadventure of Pakistan.

Here is what happened in short, if you are leaving without reading the rest of this story, where I will share how the Pakistani military tried to spin the narrative till India spoke. The crux of what happened is: Indian Air Force targetted Pakistan's Air Defence radars. The Pakistani air defence system at Lahore was neutralised. India targetted Pakistan at different cities, in the same proportion and intensity as Pakistan. India used its Integrated Counter UAS Grid and Air Defence systems for the action.

Panic in Pakistan, from Karachi to Lahore and Rawalpindi after explosions

As the reports emerged of panic in Pakistan, the country's military came up with a claim that it had shot down Indian drones in Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Attock, Bahawalpur, Miano and Chor.
