<p>As the Indian Army launched Operation Sindoor on Wednesday, in retaliation to the loss of 26 lives in the Pahalgam terror attack, the nation resonated with chants of 'Jai Hind'. The phrase has long symbolised unity, courage, and unparalleled patriotism.</p>
<p>However, it is crucial to understand the origin of this iconic phrase, and why it continues to hold such a deep significance in the Indian armed forces and beyond?</p>

<h2><strong>The origin</strong></h2>
<p>'Jai Hind', in other words, 'Victory to India', was coined by Zain-ul Abideen Hasan (later Abid Hasan Safrani) in the year 1941 while he was stationed in Germany alongside Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. As Netaji laid the foundation of the Indian National Army, also known as the Azad Hind Fauj, he adopted 'Jai Hind' as the official greeting to unify the soldiers of diverse backgrounds.</p>
<p>Before 'Jai Hind', military units were fragmented by regional or religious greetings such as 'Sat Sri Akal', 'Jai Ramji Ki', and 'Salaam Alaikum'. Bose and Hasan saw the need for a more inclusive salutation. 'Jai Hindustan Ki' was coined and later shortened to 'Jai Hind'&mdash;a crisp and secular phrase that rallied all the soldiers under one banner.</p>

<h2><strong>Institutional legacy of the INA</strong></h2>
<p>The INA which was initially formed by Captain Mohan Singh in 1942 and later revived by Bose in 1943, grew to over 50,000 soldiers. Several brave officers like Major General Shahnawaz Khan, Colonel Gurbaksh Singh Dhillon and Colonel Prem Sehgal, famously faced trial by the British at the Red Fort. This stirred nationwide support for the independence movement.</p>

Business & Economy: The stock market fluctuation is primarily driven by Pakistan's response to India's actions following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in casualties.

As tensions between India and Pakistan escalate, markets in both countries have turned extremely volatile, with the Pakistani stock index experiencing a more significant hit. The turmoil reached new heights on Friday, as India's equity markets closed sharply lower, and Pakistan's KSE-100 index see-sawing wildly, driven by growing geopolitical risks. This instability largely stems from Pakistan's response to India's response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. Indian Markets slide as conflict escalates The benchmark Sensex Index was down by over 800 points and closed at 79,925.34, still down over 800 points. Meanwhile, the broader NSE Nifty50 was down about 1 per cent, testing the 24,000-point mark at the closing bell. The sectoral landscape also reflected weakness, with the S&P BSE mid-cap and small-cap indices trading firmly in the red. Interestingly, the Nifty consumer durables index stood out as the sole gainer, posting modest gains amid the broader market decline. Still, experts cited India’s economic fundamentals—driven by robust GDP growth and softening interest rates—as key factors underpinning long-term investor confidence. However, the prevailing geopolitical uncertainty weighed heavily on sentiment, triggering caution among market participants. On the BSE, 2,466 stocks declined while only 423 advanced, indicating a widespread sell-off. Despite the weak sentiment, Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) remained net buyers, pumping in ₹2,007.96 crore into equities, whereas Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) booked profits, selling shares worth ₹596.25 crore. India-Pakistan tension: NIFTY, Sensex and KSE remain volatile amid escalating conflict

<p>Pakistan's Economic Affairs Division took to the social media platform X on Friday (May 9) and asked for "more loans" from its international partners, claiming the country has experienced "heavy loss" after India's Operation Sindoor. Later, the Pakistani government claimed that the X account was hacked, and they did not ask for any funds. This all happened within a few minutes on Friday morning. After this, the internet could not keep calm but roast Pakistan for begging for money after just two days of India's strike targeting nine terror sites in Pok and Pakistan. The country was also grilled for numerous grammatical mistakes in the post asking for money.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's precision strike on Pakistani terror targets on May 7 likely killed Abdul Rauf Azhar, brother of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) chief Masood Azhar. Abdul Rauf Azhar rose to global prominence with the inception of JeM in 2000. Earlier, a letter said to be issued by Masood Azhar confirmed that as many as 10 members of Azhar's family were killed in India's targetted strike in Pakistan's Bahawalpur, including his sister and brother-in-law, nephew and niece. <h2>Masood Azhar, Abdul Rauf Azhar and hijack of Indian Airlines flight IC-814</h2>
<p>The world and particularly India came to know about terrorist Abdul Rauf Azhar after the hijack of the Indian Airlines flight (IC-814) in 1999. Rauf Azhar - the planner of the hijack - wanted the release of his brother Masood Azhar from Kot Balwal jail of Jammu.</p>
<p>Masood Azhar was arrested by Indian authorities in February 1994 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. He had entered India on a forged Portuguese passport under the alias "Shaikh Wali".&nbsp; He was held in Indian custody for over five years without being formally charged in a trial that led to conviction.</p>
