Loud blasts heard in Pakistan's Lahore amid high tensions following India's Operation Sindoor: Report

After India armed forces on early Wednesday (May 7) struck nine terror sites as part of Operation Sindoor, India has bolstered its defenses in the land, air and sea domains with a response from Pakistan likely.
The multi-layered air defence network is fully activated, several frontline warships are deployed in the Arabian Sea, and infantry units along the frontier are fully stocked and prepared to deal with any contingency.
In the backdrop of combat air patrols being conducted by IAF fighter planes, even the tri-Service Strategic Forces Command, responsible for the country's nuclear weapons stockpile, has been placed on high alert as a precautionary measure.
"India has demonstrated considerable restraint in its response. However, it must be said that Indian armed forces are fully prepared to respond to Pakistani misadventures, if any, that will escalate the situation," warned Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, a helicopter pilot, at the briefing by foreign secretary Vikram Misri.

The sentiment in military-diplomatic ranks, though, is that General Asim Munir, who only a week ago warned a 'swift and notched-up response' against any Indian 'military misadventure', has no option but to militarily respond to rally everyone around him in his beleaguered country. "There will be great pressure on him to authorise some kind of a response," a senior officer was quoted saying to The Times of India.
Pakistan had managed to surprise India with its 'Operation Swift Retort', a day after the IAF carried out the Balakot pre-dawn air hits on Feb 26, 2019, in retaliation against the Pulwama terror strike in which 40 CRPF jawans lost their lives.
"Lessons have been learnt. It will not be so easy this time. The armed forces have been preparing for the last 15 days and will not let their guard down," another officer was quoted saying to The Times of India, while acknowledging that a large country like India simply cannot make its airspace totally impregnable.

New weapon systems inducted

The armed forces, for their part, have inducted a number of new weapon systems since Balakot in 2019. The Russian-origin S-400 surface-to-air missile systems, capable of detecting and destroying enemy strategic bombers, fighters, missiles and drones at a distance of 380-km, for example, are now integrated into the IAF's integrated air command and control system (IACCS).
At the other end of the spectrum, there are the older Igla-1M air defence systems and the newer shoulder-fired Igla-S missiles with an interception range of up to 6kms.

Between them, there are the Israeli-origin Barak-8 medium range surface-to-air missile systems (70-km range), the indigenous Akash air defence missile systems (25-km) and the Israeli low-level Spyder quick-reaction anti-aircraft missiles (15-km).
Most of them are connected to the fully computerised IACCS network, integrating a diverse array of sensors and weapons. Over the years, IACCS has been steadily augmented to consolidate the broad spectrum of military radar with civil radar. The air-based Netra and Phalcon airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) planes besides ground radars are all linked to the system.

Operation Sindoor: India heightens security across all fronts amid concerns of Pakistan's retaliation

After India launched Operation Sindoor and targeted nine terror sites, Pakistan claimed it downed five Indian jets. And now to back these claims, Defence Minister Khwaja Asif cited social media posts as evidence.
In an interview with news outlet CNN, Asif was comfortable in saying, "It's all over the social media." This is when the journalist asked if he had proof to validate Pakistan's claims of downing Indian jets.

On Wednesday (May 7) in his address after Operation Sindoor, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said the airstrike was a compulsion, as Pakistan did not take any steps to curb the operation of terror outfits on their soil.
He said, "It was deemed essential that the perpetrators and planners of the 22 April attack be brought to justice. Despite a fortnight having passed since the attacks, there has been no demonstrable step from Pakistan to take action against the terror infrastructure on its territory or territory under its control."
"Instead, all it has indulged in are denials and allegations. Our intelligence monitoring of Pakistan-based terrorist modules indicated that further attacks against India were impending. Thus, there was a compulsion both to deter and to preempt," Misri added.
Also, this isn't the first time the Pakistan Defence Minister has baffled journalists interviewing him. In his previous interview with news outlet Sky News, he made a bizarre claim when he said, 'Lashkar-e-Taiba doesn't exist.'
But he did confirm that the country had been associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba in the 'past'. He added, "Lashkar-e-Taiba doesn't exist in Pakistan anymore; it is extinct."

Operation Sindoor: Why India Hit LeT's Muridke Markaz Four Times

The Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor in the early hours of Wednesday, targeting nine locations linked to terror groups in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The strikes were a “focused, measured and non-escalatory” response to the recent attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 26 civilians were brutally killed after being singled out by terrorists.
Here are 4 key questions, answered:

1. What makes Operation Sindoor India’s most powerful cross-border strike?

Launched at 1.05 am on Wednesday, Operation Sindoor was not only a major strike, it was India’s largest cross-border anti-terror operation since the 1971 war. The offensive hit nine terror-linked sites, including key launchpads and the headquarters of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, both of which have a long record of attacks on Indian soil.

What makes this different is the scale and geographical spread. Unlike past strikes, which mostly focused on PoK or its edges, this time four targets were deep inside Pakistan’s Punjab, in the districts of Bahawalpur, Sialkot and Sheikhupura.

2. Is this a turning point in how India responds to terror?

India has responded militarily to terror attacks before, like in 2016, after soldiers were killed in Uri, and in 2019, after the Pulwama bombing. But both of those counter-strikes focused on camps in PoK or Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

This time, the target list included sites well within Pakistan’s mainland, signalling a possible shift in India’s posture. Though the strikes were carefully calibrated to avoid hitting Pakistani military facilities, experts say this operation may mark a new threshold in cross-border responses.

3. Could this trigger a full-scale conflict between India and Pakistan?

There are concerns that this could lead to a wider crisis between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. Some security analysts have already called it the “most dangerous” standoff since 2002, even more serious than the Uri or Balakot episodes.
