Another country backs Trump’s Nobel Peace Prize dream, sends official letter – What we know

The White House on Thursday (July 31) backed United States President Donald Trump's Nobel Peace Prize demand, reiterating that he has been instrumental in solving several crisis around the world. Addressing a press briefing, the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt Trump has brokered several peace deals and ceasefires in several conflict zones across the world. Estimating that Trump has delivered at least one peace deal per month in his six month tenure as US president, Leavitt reiterated the call for the Nobel Peace Prize. Earlier, Trump had said that he does not get credit for his work and the Nobel Committee won't award him the peace prize because they give it to the ‘left’ and ‘radical.’

Detailing about the recent Thailand-Cambodia conflict, Leavitt said, "On the peace front, President Trump helped deliver an immediate and unconditional ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. The two countries were engaged in a deadly conflict that had displaced more than 300,000 people until President Trump stepped in to put an end to it." The ceasefire agreement was announced by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), who mediated talks between Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai at his official residence near the capital, Kuala Lumpur. She further added that the US President "spoke directly on the phone with the acting Prime Minister of Thailand and the Prime Minister of Cambodia, to inform both the leaders that unless they brought the conflict to an end, there would be no trade discussions or agreements with the United States. Almost immediately afterwards, a peace was brokered that will save thousands of lives and allowed for trade negotiations with these countries to resume, and they have."
List of conflicts ended by Trump as claimed by the White House
Leavitt further added, "The President has now ended conflicts between Thailand and Cambodia, Israel and Iran, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, India and Pakistan, Serbia and Kosovo, and Egypt and Ethiopia. This means President Trump has brokered, on average, about one peace deal or ceasefire per month during his six months in office. It is well past time that President Trump was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize." Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for stopping hostilities between India and Pakistan after New Delhi's effective response to Islamabad's aggression following precision strikes on terror infrastructure. However, India refuted the claims made by the US President, reiterating its policy that India and Pakistan bilaterally address any matter related to the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.
‘No leader in the world told India to stop its operation’
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while speaking in the Lok Sabha during the Operation Sindoor discussion, emphasised that no world leader told India to stop its operation. "No leader in the world told India to stop its operation. On the night of 9th May, the Vice President of America tried to talk to me. He tried for an hour, but I was in a meeting with my army, so I could not pick up his call. Later, I called him back. The Vice President of America told me on the phone that Pakistan is going to launch a big attack. My answer was that if Pakistan has this intention, it will cost them a lot. If Pakistan attacks, we will respond by launching a big attack. This was my answer...," PM Modi said.

Drawing from Lord Mahavira’s teachings, he spoke about ‘Anekantavad’, the dangers of intellectual intolerance, and how blending spiritual wisdom with modern science can guide us toward a more peaceful world. Disclaimer: This text has been translated from Hindi to English and may have been lightly edited for clarity while preserving the original meaning. Q. We hear the words peace and nonviolence a lot, but they can feel a bit distant from real life. From your experience, what does true peace look like in the real world, especially in difficult or divided places?A. We’re discussing peace and nonviolence at a time when many parts of the world are engulfed in war, conflict, and violence. I believe that war, weapons, and terrorism are not the solutions to any problem. Dialogue, conversation, and peaceful negotiation can resolve even the most difficult issues.I agree with your point, you mentioned that in our personal lives, there is often a big gap between what we believe and how we act. That contradiction also exists in the world at large. We all want the fruits of peace and nonviolence. Still, the reality is that governments around the world spend billions of dollars every year on building new weapons and advancing military research. At the same time, there are almost no training centres for peace. We don’t hear about institutions dedicated to teaching nonviolence. So, if we truly want to establish peace and harmony in the world, we must address it at its root level. We need to address the issue at its source.Only then can we bring this vision to life. If I had to put it in one line: before there can be world peace, there must be inner peace, peace within the mind. And for that, it’s not medicine that we need, but meditation.Through inner peace and mental calm, we can begin to cultivate peace in our communities, our nations, and ultimately, in the world. Q. Jain monks often wear a white cloth over their mouths. Can you share the meaning behind that practice and what it reflects about how Jainism views life and compassion?A. You must have heard that in Jainism, the concept of ahimsa (nonviolence) has been explored with great depth and subtlety. I can respond to this in two ways. One is that, yes, the Jain monk has become a symbol of nonviolence. But more importantly, we must understand the deep philosophical reasoning behind that symbolism. For example, you may have noticed that during winter, when we speak, a visible breath or vapour escapes from our mouth. In Jainism, the idea of nonviolence is so refined that even unintentionally harming invisible or microscopic life forms, or mentally hurting someone, is also considered an act of violence. In this universe, every living being, seen or unseen, has value. The goal is to live in a way that avoids harming any of them, even unintentionally.Let me give you a practical example: the use of a mask, which Jain monks have traditionally worn. This mask slows down the force of our breath, preventing it from disturbing or harming tiny organisms in the outside environment. Behind this practice is a deeply thought-out reason.Of course, over time, the world has come to see its value. For instance, before the COVID era, when I used to visit the U.S. wearing a mask, people would ask me, “Why are you wearing this?” And then, during the pandemic, we reached a point where not wearing a mask could result in a fine from the police.Today, what was once a spiritual practice is also being recognized as a scientifically valid one. There is both a spiritual and a scientific logic behind it. Q. You’ve spoken at global events and met political and spiritual leaders. How do you bring ancient Jain ideas into those modern spaces, and what makes those teachings still matter today?A. During my visit to the United States for the convention held in Chicago, more than 5,000 delegates from around 70 centres participated. On that platform, I once again shared this thought and I want to repeat it here through you, Dhruv, and through this platform, Lord Mahavira’s (Spiritual leader also known as Vardhamana) philosophy is not only deeply spiritual, but also scientific. And it is more relevant today than it was 26 centuries ago.In today’s world, where we witness war, violence, and conflict, Mahavira’s philosophy of ‘Anekantavad’ (the doctrine of the multiplicity of views) holds profound meaning. I believe that environmental pollution is a serious problem, including climate change and global warming, but an even bigger issue is intellectual pollution. This pollution of thought, of intolerance, is more dangerous than environmental damage. Mahavira’s doctrine of Anekant teaches us that just as we value our existence, we must also respect the existence of others. Just as we hold our own beliefs, we must learn to respect the viewpoints of others. This idea lies at the heart of Indian culture: unity in diversity, a pluralistic society rooted in mutual respect.Sarva Dharma Sambhava: respect for all religions, is not just a phrase; it is a profound principle. As Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (Philosopher and former President of India) once said, India’s democracy itself is built on the foundation of Mahavira’s Anekant philosophy.Within Anekant and Ahimsa (nonviolence), we can find solutions to many of the world’s greatest problems. If I had to name three major challenges today: terrorism and violence, global warming and climate change, and poverty and inequality. I believe Mahavira’s philosophy offers answers to all of them. You also raised an important point, the balance between ancient wisdom and the modern world. I believe that ancient knowledge and modern science are not mutually exclusive. They are complementary. When we bring them together, we can build a more beautiful world and a better society. That is why I’ve been advocating for Peace Education at the United Nations. The core idea behind this is the integration of spirituality and science, bringing religion back to its spiritual roots, not just as ritual or identity, but as a guide for living with compassion, balance, and understanding.Only through this integration can we create a world filled with peace, harmony, and beauty. Q. Many people today feel overwhelmed or disconnected, especially in fast-paced environments. What simple ideas from Jainism do you think can help someone find a bit more balance or calm in everyday life?A. In this obsession with becoming number one, and in the chaos-filled world we live in, I believe that people have invited restlessness into their lives. To find a solution for this, when we consider our ancient principles, balance has always been a key concept in our tradition.Read the Upanishads. They talk about the “Purusharth Chatushtaya” (the four aims of life): Artha (wealth), Kama (desires), Dharma (righteousness), and Moksha (liberation). There is no conflict between Dharma, Artha, and Kama, but Dharma must guide the other two. When all four are in balance, that’s where a healthy society is built. That’s where a well-structured and peaceful community emerges.Whether you read the Upanishads or the Bhagavad Gita, you’ll find the same message. There’s a shloka in the Gita:“Yatra Yogeshwarah Krishna Yatra Partho Dhanur Dharah…”Lokmanya Tilak (Indian nationalist, teacher, social reformer, and independence activist), in his commentary, interpreted this differently. He saw Krishna, the Yogeshwar (master of yoga), as a symbol of spirituality, and Arjuna as a symbol of material life. He said that where there is balance between the spiritual and the material, that is where true victory lies. That is where prosperity, strength, and grace (Lakshmi) are found.Lord Mahavira established the five Mahavratas (great vows) for monks, including nonviolence, truth, and celibacy, among others. But for householders, for common people, he gave Anuvratas. Anu means small, and vrata means a disciplined vow. These were like a minimum moral code. Following even this basic ethical framework helps build a healthy, functioning society. So we should not reject the ancient, nor blindly chase only the modern. Instead, we should strive to draw from both. By blending the wisdom of the old with the innovation of the new, we can help make the world a more beautiful place. Q. You’ve worked to bring people together across different religions and cultures. What have you learned from those moments about what different belief systems have in common?A. In the context of India, we’ve seen political parties, whether 15, 20, or 25 of them, come together under alliances like the NDA or UPA and run governments for 5, 10, or even 15 years based on a Common Minimum Programme. So why can’t spiritual and religious leaders do the same? After all, we all believe in nonviolence, peace, harmony, compassion, love, and the idea of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’: that the whole world is one family. If our core values align, why can’t we come together and work collectively?I would go so far as to say that even global institutions: whether it’s the United Nations, the World Bank, UNESCO, or UNICEF, have now begun to realize that if there’s to be any meaningful transformation in India, it can happen most effectively through the medium of religion and spirituality.I recall addressing the World Parliament of Religions in Salt Lake City in 2015, then again at the next World Parliament in Toronto in 2018, and most recently at the one held in Chicago, the same city where Swami Vivekananda (Indian monk and philosopher) delivered his iconic speech in 1893. On that stage, I shared this very thought: in India, every day, millions of people go to their places of worship, temples, mosques, churches, gurudwaras. If religious leaders unite and guide them with clarity and purpose, they can achieve what even massive government budgets often fail to do.So yes, I strongly believe that this is the need of the hour.Take the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine or even Russia and Ukraine, for example. Why is it still happening? Should it be happening? I won’t go into all the political details, but I will say this: innocent children are dying, and common citizens who have done nothing wrong are suffering. In such times, the voice of religious leaders is essential. They need to come together, raise their voices, and work actively for peace, love, harmony, and brotherhood in this world. That’s why I call upon all global religious leaders. My organisation, Ahimsa Vishwa Bharti, has often brought various religious networks together on a common platform to solve social issues and promote spiritual upliftment.Today, through this message, I urge everyone: let’s sit together and talk. Even if we take just a few steps together, it makes a difference. Otherwise, the distances between us will only grow. And only when we come closer can we truly meet ourselves.

Before there can be world peace, there must be inner peace, peace within the mind. And for that, it’s not medicine that we need, but meditation. Through inner peace and mental calm, we can begin to cultivate peace in our communities, our nations, and ultimately, in the world.

‘War, weapons, and terrorism are not solutions to any problem’: Peace advocate Acharya Lokesh Muni

US President Donald Trump has spared no effort in demonstrating his desire to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In a latest development, Trump once again touted his claimed diplomatic achievements as a justification for receiving the world’s most prestigious peace honour. This time, Trump bragged his alleged role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan, a claim which has multiple times been firmly denied by New Delhi. On numerous occasions, from official speeches to campaign rallies and even interviews, Trump has never shied away from publicly referenced the Nobel Peace Prize. Despite not securing the award during his first term, his preoccupation with it appears undiminished.
A Pattern of Nominations

Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize on multiple occasions, since his first term but has never won the prize. From Norwegian MP Christian Tybring-Gjedde, Swedish MP Magnus Jacobsson, and U.S. Congresswoman Claudia Tenney, his nominations have come from a range of people, who have been typically citing his role in diplomatic agreements such as the Abraham Accords. Earlier on Saturday, Pakistan through a post on social media platform X recommended his name, stating that the President should get Nobel Peace Prize in 2026 “in recognition of his decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership during the recent India-Pakistan crisis”. In 2024, Trump was again nominated by Anat Alon-Beck, who is an Israeli-born law professor at Case Western Reserve University. He credited him with fostering the early efforts toward peace in the Middle East and even facilitating hostage releases. Before this, Ukrainian politician Oleksandr Merezhko also put Trump forward for consideration.Despite being nominated several times, the Nobel Committee has never considered awarding him. He has publicly expressed this desire many times over the years, in interviews, speeches, campaign rallies, and even social media posts. Trump has consistently taken credit for de-escalating tensions and brokering peace, and this is regardless of whether the parties involved acknowledged his mediation. This is especially true in case of the India-Pakistan recent conflict, when India repeatedly denied any efforts of mediation made by US in the matter. His frustration over the snub has not only been public but also persistent. According to advisers, the desire for the Nobel is not symbolic, it is personal, and has actively influenced how his team positions his foreign policy moves.
Obama and the Source of Frustration
But the frustration is not without a reason. ‘Nobel ambitions': Why Donald Trump won’t stop talking about the peace prize?

Jailed former prime minister Imran Khan has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts towards "human rights and democracy in Pakistan", an advocacy group said. The announcement was made by Pakistan World Alliance (PWA), the advocacy group founded last December and affiliated with the Norwegian political party Partiet Sentrum.
"We are pleased to announce on behalf of Partiet Sentrum that in alliance with somebody with the right to nominate, have nominated Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, to the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with human rights and democracy in Pakistan," Partiet Sentrum said on X on Sunday.
Anyone can be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by "qualified nominators". There are several categories of qualified nominators including members of national assemblies and governments.
Every year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee receives hundreds of nominations after which they select the winner through a lengthy eight-month process, The Express Tribune reported.

In 2019, Khan was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote peace in South Asia.
Khan, also the founder of Pakistan's main opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been incarcerated since August 2023.
This January, Khan was sentenced to 14 years in prison in a case related to the misuse of authority and corruption.
It was the fourth major case in which the former premier has been convicted.
Three earlier convictions related to selling state gifts, leaking state secrets, and unlawful marriage were overturned or suspended by courts.
Khan lost power after a no-confidence vote in April 2022. He denies all charges against him, calling them politically motivated.

Nobel Peace Prize 2025: Donald Trump, Pope Francis among likely nominations

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has strongly defended President Donald Trump’s approach to brokering peace between Ukraine and Russia, arguing that his efforts would have gotten him a Nobel Prize if he were a Democrat.
Speaking on ABC News’s This Week, Rubio questioned the criticism aimed at Trump, saying, “Shouldn’t we all be happy that we have a president who’s trying to stop wars and prevent them instead of start them?”

He went on to add, “I just don’t get it. I really don’t, other than the fact that it’s Donald J. Trump.”
Rubio suggested that Trump’s actions would be viewed differently under another administration, adding, “If this was a Democrat that was doing this, everyone would be saying, ‘Well, he’s on his way to the Nobel Peace Prize. This is absurd.’”

A shift in strategy

Rubio defended Trump’s diplomatic approach, which he described as a break from years of hostile rhetoric towards Russian President Vladimir Putin. Instead, he said, Trump is attempting to negotiate an end to the war.
“We are trying to end a war. You cannot end a war unless both sides come to the table, starting with the Russians. And that, that is the point the president has made. And we have to do whatever we can to try to bring them to the table to see if it’s even possible,” Rubio said.

Rubio’s comments followed a tense Oval Office meeting on Friday between Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Zelensky had travelled to Washington to discuss a mineral deal, which Trump has called a crucial step towards a possible ceasefire. However, the talks quickly deteriorated when Zelensky suggested Vance visit Ukraine to witness the devastation firsthand and insisted that Russia was responsible for the ongoing conflict.

During the public portion of the meeting, Trump and Vance openly criticised Zelensky, with Vance accusing him of engaging in “publicity tours.” Trump bluntly told the Ukrainian leader, “You’re not really in a good position right now.” At one point, Vance pressed Zelensky, asking, “Have you said thank you once?”
The exchange escalated further when Trump issued a stark warning: “Make a deal or we are out,” hinting that the US could withdraw its support for Kyiv if negotiations did not progress.

Jailed Narges Mohammadi sends fiery message for Iran upon receiving Nobel Peace Prize

In pics | Nobel Peace Prize: Five Laureates who were in jail when they won

The United Nations on Friday (Oct 6) urged Iran to free Narges Mohammadi, moments after the jailed activist was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace.

Mohammadi, 51, is a journalist-activist who spent much of past 20 years in and out of jail for campaigning against mandatory dress code for women and the death penalty.

"The women of Iran have been an inspiration for the world," news agency AFP quoted the UN human rights office as saying.

"Their courage and determination in the face of reprisals, intimidation, violence and detention has been remarkable. They have been harassed for what they wear and what they do not wear, and face increasingly stringent legal, social and economic measures against them."

"Narges Mohammadi's case is emblematic of the huge risks that women take to advocate for the rights of all Iranians. We call for her release and the release of all human rights defenders jailed in Iran."

Human rights office spokeswoman Elizabeth Throssell at a press briefing in Geneva said that the Nobel award for Mohammadi "really highlights the courage and determination of the women of Iran and how they are an inspiration".

UN spokeswoman Alessandra Vellucci said respect for women's rights had always been an "extremely important point" for the United Nations.

"We stand for the rights of women around the world, including in Iran," she told the briefing.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "has been very clear in his defence in the human rights of women and girls in Iran", she added.

Mohammadi still in prison

Mohammadi has been detained by the Iranian regime on 13 occasions, received convictions on five occasions, and faced a cumulative sentence of 31 years in prison, along with 154 lashings.

Earlier this year, she was among the three imprisoned Iranian journalists who were honoured with the United Nations' World Press Freedom Prize.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday (Oct 6) said, "This year’s peace prize also recognises the hundreds of thousands of people who have demonstrated against the theocratic regime’s policies of discrimination and oppression targeting women."

"The women of Iran have been an inspiration for the world," news agency AFP quoted the UN human rights office as saying. "Their courage and determination in the face of reprisals, intimidation, violence and detention has been remarkable. They have been harassed for what they wear and what they do not wear, and face increasingly stringent legal, social and economic measures against them." "Narges Mohammadi's case is emblematic of the huge risks that women take to advocate for the rights of all Iranians. We call for her release and the release of all human rights defenders jailed in Iran." Human rights office spokeswoman Elizabeth Throssell at a press briefing in Geneva said that the Nobel award for Mohammadi "really highlights the courage and determination of the women of Iran and how they are an inspiration". "We stand for the rights of women around the world, including in Iran," she told the briefing. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "has been very clear in his defence in the human rights of women and girls in Iran", she added. Mohammadi still in prison Mohammadi has been detained by the Iranian regime on 13 occasions, received convictions on five occasions, and faced a cumulative sentence of 31 years in prison, along with 154 lashings.
