Tybring-Gjedde said that Trump has done more for peace than numerous holders of the coveted award. “For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees,"&nbsp;Tybring-Gjedde told&nbsp;Fox News.

This may turn the tide in Trump's favour in the upcoming US elections, beginning November 3. Most polls show him trailing behind his Democrat rival Joe Biden.&nbsp;

President Trump had earlier claimed that he was robbed of the Nobel Peace Prize.

During a rally in Toledo, Ohio, in January 2020,&nbsp;Trump had&nbsp;said he deserved the prize which was earlier awarded to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.

“I made a deal, I saved a country, and I just heard that the head of that country is now getting the Nobel Peace Prize for saving the country. I said, ‘What, did I have something do with it?'” Trump claimed.

“Yeah, but you know, that’s the way it is. As long as we know, that’s all that matters … I saved a big war, I’ve saved a couple of them”, he added.

Abiy received the peace prize for ending Ethiopian border conflict with neighbouring Eritrea, which had later settled in 2018.

Earlier, allies of the US president had said that Trump deserves the Nobel Prize for his negotiations with North Korea. Trump had also complained about his predecessor, President Barack Obama receiving the coveted award.

“They gave it to Obama. He didn’t even know what he got it for. He was there for about 15 seconds and he got the Nobel Prize. He said, ‘Oh, what did I get it for?’” Trump claimed&nbsp;in February 2019.

“With me, I probably will never get it”, he had claimed.&nbsp;

This year's Nobel peace prize will be announced in Oslo on October 9.

"The death of John Hume represents the loss of 20th century Ireland’s most significant and consequential political figure," SDLP leader Colum Eastwood said in a statement.&nbsp;

"This is an historic moment on this island but most of all it is a moment of deep, deep sadness."

Hume, a moderate nationalist and civil rights campaigner, held pioneering talks with Gerry Adams, who was at the time the leader of the Sinn Fein party that was then the political wing of the Irish Republican Army (IRA).&nbsp;

The talks helped pave the way for a joint initiative by the British and Irish governments in 1993.&nbsp;

That spawned a peace process and an IRA truce in 1994 and talks that produced the watershed Good Friday accord.

"All of us, should bow our heads in respect &amp; thanks. What an extraordinary man, peacemaker, politician, leader, civil rights campaigner, family man, Derryman, inspiration," Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney said in a statement.

'People of Hong Kong' nominated for Nobel Peace Prize 2020

Indian-origin <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/indian-origin-abhijit-banerjee-among-three-to-receive-economics-nobel-for-work-on-poverty-255810">economist Abhijit Banerjee, 58</a>, was on Monday awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics.

Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer were also named as&nbsp;co-winners of the prestigious award.

The trio was&nbsp;selected for their contribution in "experimental approach to alleviating global poverty."

Abhijit Banerjee, an Indian-American&nbsp;born in Kolkata, is currently the Ford Foundation international professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology(MIT).

Banerjee completed his bachelor's degree in economics at Presidency College, Kolkata and later gained a Masters degree in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) in Delhi.

He has also been a professor at Harvard where he completed his Ph.D.&nbsp;

Banerjee shared the award with his wife Esther Duflo. Born in Paris, Esther, 46, is also a professor at MIT. In 1999, Abhijit was the joint supervisor of Esther's Ph.D&nbsp;in Economics.&nbsp;They were married in 2015 and have a son.&nbsp;

"The only way I could see that happen is that she would be part of a shared prize like Malala," Urdal said, referring to Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai, who shared the 2014 prize -- at age 17 -- with Indian children's rights activist Kailash Satyarthi.

Late Thursday, Norwegian broadcaster NRK put little faith in the idea, reporting that while "bookmakers bet on Greta Thunberg, the Nobel Committee won't".

NRK journalist Knut Magnus Berge also pointed out that even though her achievements are impressive, Greta is so young, "the Committee has time to wait".&nbsp;

WALID- There’s no news in Loujain’s case. MBS said in 60 minutes that he will personally investigate the torture but so far we haven’t heard any news about initiating an investigation on torture. As to the peace prize, I heard it from the news and I hope it’s real. Also, It’s hard to tell because they're unpredictable and not transparent at all. WION -Your sister has been put behind bars. Why? Can you describe how it all began and why it happened? WALID- At the beginning when she was arrested as part of the crackdown on May 15, 2018, we did not know why she was arrested. Local media immediately published that she was a traitor and was working with a foreign power. During her detention, they did not charge her with anything until the trial which started after ten months. After reading the charge sheet, we found out that most of the charges are related to her human rights activism. One of the charges that she is facing is applying for a job at the UN. So clearly there is no consistency between what they said at the beginning and for what they officially charged her. As to why she was arrested, it is difficult to know but I would say that there’s an abuse of power. WION- Who were the other activists involved? How many of them are still behind bars and what has been the development in their release so far? WALID- As there’s a lack of transparency in the legal system, it’s difficult to answer the question accurately but I would assume that there are four other women in jail, not including men. In the beginning, they started a trial but all of a sudden after the third session they stopped the whole trial and nobody knows why they did that. Also, nobody knows if they will resume the trial anytime in the future. WION-Loujain al-Hathloul has rejected a proposal to secure her release from prison in exchange for a video statement denying she was tortured in custody. Can you briefly describe your statement? WALID- I don’t have any position in that matter as each option has a consequence and it makes it hard to decide which option I should pick. But regardless of my position, it is Loujain who should decide what is best for her. I believe that they went too far by asking a video release to deny the torture. WION-You can appeal to any international body or anyone that you wish to. Did you try this before? WALID- I prefer not to answer this question. WION- What is your grievance with the government and Who do you wish to appeal to and why? WALID- We have been contacting the government since day one. We sent countless letters to the government but got no response. Unfortunately, we are now in a position where we have lost hope that the government would cooperate with us. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday appeared unfamiliar with the work and cause of Nobel laureate Nadia Murad as she pleaded with him to help the Yazidis of Iraq.

Murad, one of the thousands of women and girls from the ancient faith abducted by ISIS as they overran swathes of Iraq in 2014, joined a group of survivors of religious persecution who met Trump in the Oval Office on the sidelines of a major meeting at the State Department.

After Murad explained how her mother and six brothers were killed and that 3,000 Yazidis remained missing, Trump said, "And you had the Nobel Prize? That's incredible. They gave it to you for what reason?"

Swedish teenage activist Greta Thunberg urged European politicians on Friday to focus on a climate crisis instead of "bickering", as children walked out of classes around the world to back her demands for urgent action to curb carbon emissions.

Thunberg, 16, said the threat of societal breakdown posed by runaway climate change should overshadow every other campaign issue in the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/european-union-elections-five-things-to-watch-220958"> European Union's parliamentary elections </a>this week.

"If the EU were to decide to seriously fight the climate crisis, it would mean a decisive global change. And the EU election should reasonably only be about this. But it isn't," Thunberg told thousands gathered in Kungstradgarden square in Stockholm's banking district.

By 2200 GMT, more than 1.8 million people in 2,350 cities across 125 countries had joined the strike, according to a tally on the Facebook page of the Fridays for Future movement, a network of young climate protesters.

An estimated 1.5 million young people took part in a previous global school strike on March 15.

In New York, several hundred children and teenagers marched from Columbus Circle to Times Square, shouting their support for a "Green New Deal" proposed in Congress that calls among other things for 100 per cent of US power demand to be met through renewable energy sources within 10 years.

France vehemently criticized the United States for threatening to use its veto over a reference in the text to reproductive rights, seen by Washington as encouragement of abortion.

Speaking before the vote, Murad and Mukwege decried the international community's failure to act.&nbsp;

"Not a single person has been charged for sexual slavery," said Murad, speaking at the United Nations about massacres of her Yazidi community by the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

"The hopes of an entire generation have been destroyed," the Iraqi human rights activist added, speaking of the "collective failure" of the international community to intervene.

"We give speeches at the UN but no real measures have been taken (in terms of obtaining justice) and nothing has been done."

Mukwege, a Congolese doctor who like Murad was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018, asked: "What is the international community waiting for to give justice for the victims?"

He also called for the establishment of national and international courts to try the perpetrators of sexual violence in conflicts.

Human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, who represents Murad and other Yazidi victims, denounced the weak international response.

She accused the United States and Russia of opposing a judicial system to hold the perpetrators of these crimes to account, as has been done for past horrors committed in Bosnia, Cambodia, Sierra Leone and Rwanda, or at the Nuremberg trials after World War II.

'It's scandalous'&nbsp;

"If we don't act now, it will be too late," Clooney said, pointing to the thousands of Islamic State group militants currently being held. "I agree that we are facing an epidemic of sexual violence. And I believe that justice is the antidote."

The German text initially sought to establish a formal working group, set up a mechanism to help bring to justice those responsible and develop victims' protection by giving formal recognition to their sexual and reproductive rights.

China, Russia and the United States opposed the mechanism, the working group was scrapped and Washington threatened a veto if the text spoke of reproductive rights.

"We deplore that the veto threats were brandished by permanent members of the council to challenge 25 years of gains in favour of women's rights in situations of armed conflict," France's ambassador to the United Nations Francois Delattre said after the vote.

US President Donald Trump's administration last month toughened a ban on the use of taxpayer money to support abortion overseas and has stepped up its dispute with the International Criminal Court.

Delattre expressed dismay "that a state has demanded the removal of a reference to sexual and reproductive health, which has been approved" in previous resolutions.

"It is intolerable and incomprehensible that the Security Council is unable to recognize that women and girls who have suffered sexual violence in times of conflict, and who have obviously not chosen to be pregnant, have the right to the choice to terminate their pregnancy," he said.

A diplomat said the resolution had been "reduced so much that it's now inadequate and there isn't much left."

Another added: "The Americans have taken negotiations hostage based on their own ideology. It's scandalous."

In a joint statement, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden said they "deeply regretted" the lack of reference to victims' rights due to the threat of a US veto.

"Services for survivors of conflict-related sexual violence, such as access to emergency contraception and safe termination of pregnancies, must be strengthen," noted Norwegian ambassador Mona Juul.

The awarding of the Nobel prize to Thunberg would be an acknowledgement that climate action and commitment to peace go hand in hand and would be a boost to these popular movements, the promoters of her nomination argued.

Pakistani Malala Yousafzai in 2014 became the youngest winner of the prize, at the age of 17.

This year's Nobel Peace Prize has 304 candidates, of which 219 are individuals and 85 organizations, the Norwegian Nobel Committee reported last month.

According to the testament of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish magnate who instituted the awards, people who can nominate someone for the Peace Prize are university professors in Law, History and Political Sciences, parliamentarians, former laureates and members of international courts, among others.

Only those who nominate can make the identity of the candidates public, since the Norwegian Nobel Committee only publishes the total number of applicants and does not confirm names until 50 years later.

The Nobel prizes are awarded each year on December 10, coinciding with the anniversary of the death of its founder, in a double ceremony: at the Oslo City Hall in Norway, for the Peace Prize, and in the Konserthus in Stockholm, Sweden, for the others five awards.
