Nobel Peace Prize laureate Navi Pillay on Tuesday (Oct 13) urged the United States to return to its traditional role as a global defender of human rights, criticising Washington’s campaign against the International Criminal Court (ICC) and its decision to impose sanctions on the institution. “My message is: ‘You have to get back to playing your serious role as a leader, playing a liberatory role for the rest of the world,'" Pillay, 85, told Reuters in The Hague on Tuesday, where she serves as a judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the United Nations’ highest court. The remarks came days after Pillay was announced as this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winner. Hours after the announcement on Friday, the US unveiled sweeping sanctions targeting the ICC, where Pillay previously worked.Pillay said she did not believe the timing was coincidental, arguing that efforts to weaken international criminal justice through the court had been developing for some time. Donald Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize.
He claims to have settled eight wars.
Yet conflicts continue, and his latest declaration — “I can do whatever I want, if I want” — raises fresh questions about presidential power.

Donald Trump renews his claim to global recognition as wars persist

Donald Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize. And with the Norwegian Nobel Committee preparing to announce this year's winner on October 9, the American president has made another public case for why he believes he deserves the world's most prestigious peace award. His argument is straightforward: he claims to have settled eight wars. But the reality of global conflict is considerably more complicated. From Ukraine to Iran, and from Central Africa to Southeast Asia, questions remain about the durability of ceasefires, the effectiveness of diplomatic interventions and whether temporary agreements should be counted as lasting peace. And while Trump seeks international recognition for his diplomatic achievements, his latest remarks about presidential power have ignited another debate closer to home.&nbsp;<h2>Eight wars and a Nobel ambition</h2>&nbsp;Trump insists his diplomatic record is unprecedented. He has repeatedly credited his administration with resolving international disputes, facilitating agreements and preventing conflicts from escalating. His supporters point to negotiations involving countries such as Cambodia and Thailand, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, and diplomatic initiatives in the Middle East. These efforts deserve examination on their individual merits. But claiming to have settled eight wars raises a different question: what constitutes a successfully resolved conflict?Fighting has resurfaced in some regions where Trump claims diplomatic success.Russia's war in Ukraine continues despite his earlier promises of a swift settlement. And the conflict involving Iran has disrupted international energy supplies, complicated regional security and raised questions about Washington's broader foreign policy objectives.Diplomatic engagement is important. From Ukraine to Iran, and from Central Africa to Southeast Asia, questions remain about the durability of ceasefires, the effectiveness of diplomatic interventions and whether temporary agreements should be counted as lasting peace. Eight wars and a Nobel ambition Trump insists his diplomatic record is unprecedented. But claiming to have settled eight wars raises a different question: what constitutes a successfully resolved conflict? He was impeached twice by the House of Representatives during his first presidency and acquitted twice by the Senate. His latest comments raise a broader constitutional question about the limits of presidential authority. American presidents possess substantial executive powers, particularly in foreign policy and national security. But those powers remain subject to constitutional constraints, judicial review and congressional oversight. The distinction between political authority and personal discretion is fundamental to the American constitutional system. And it becomes particularly important when a president discusses possible action against political rivals. The divisions within MAGA Trump's foreign policy has also exposed disagreements within his own political movement. The America First message resonated with supporters who wanted Washington to reduce its involvement in prolonged overseas conflicts. Trump repeatedly criticised previous administrations for costly military interventions and promised a different approach. But the continuing confrontation with Iran has complicated that narrative. Some prominent conservative commentators and MAGA-aligned figures have questioned the administration's military strategy, warning against another open-ended conflict in the Middle East. Others argue that military pressure is necessary to protect American interests and deter adversaries. These divisions do not establish that Trump has lost the support of his political base. They do, however, reveal competing interpretations of what America First should mean. Is it a commitment to military restraint? Or does it permit forceful intervention when the administration considers American security threatened? That debate is becoming increasingly difficult to separate from Trump's wider foreign policy record. Peace cannot be measured by declarations alone There is no universally accepted formula for measuring diplomatic success. A negotiated ceasefire can save lives even when it fails to produce a permanent settlement. An agreement that reduces tensions may represent meaningful progress without ending a conflict entirely. Equally, renewed hostilities can expose the limitations of agreements celebrated prematurely. That distinction matters when evaluating Trump's claims. His administration has participated in diplomatic initiatives that supporters regard as significant achievements. Critics argue that some of those accomplishments have been overstated, particularly where violence has continued or the United States played a more limited role than the president suggests. The Nobel Committee will make its decision independently. And the award is not determined by how frequently a political leader claims to deserve it. The presidency, power and the pursuit of recognition Trump's Nobel ambitions and his latest comments about presidential authority have brought two separate debates into focus. One concerns America's contribution to international peace. The other concerns the limits of power within the United States itself. Both deserve scrutiny. A president can pursue diplomatic recognition while exercising substantial military authority. Those objectives are not inherently contradictory. But claims of peacemaking must be assessed against outcomes, just as claims of executive power must be assessed against constitutional limits. Ultimately, the important question extends beyond whether Donald Trump receives the Nobel Peace Prize. It is whether the diplomatic agreements he celebrates can produce lasting security, whether America's military commitments align with his promises, and whether presidential authority continues to operate within established constitutional boundaries. The Nobel Peace Prize recognises contributions to peace. It does not confer unlimited presidential authority. And those are two very different things.

'I should win it': Trump renews Nobel Peace Prize claim ahead of 2026 announcement

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize race has taken an unexpected turn, with the International Space Station (ISS) emerging as a potential contender alongside political leaders, humanitarian organisations and international institutions. The Norwegian Nobel Committee is scheduled to announce this year's Peace Prize winner in Oslo on October 9. A total of 287 eligible nominations were submitted, including 208 individuals and 79 organisations. However, the official list of nominees will remain confidential for 50 years. As a result, names mentioned in expert assessments, prediction markets and public discussions should not be considered confirmed nominees.<h2>Why the ISS is being considered?</h2>The International Space Station has attracted attention as a symbol of international cooperation amid growing geopolitical tensions. The orbiting laboratory has brought together astronauts and scientists from the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada, providing a rare example of countries with significant political differences maintaining cooperation on a shared peaceful project.&nbsp;According to Haakon Gjerløw, acting director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), the ISS represents an unusual example of geopolitical rivals continuing to work together. The station has remained continuously occupied since November 2000, making it one of the longest-running examples of international scientific cooperation. If recognised, the ISS would likely be honoured not for a single scientific breakthrough but for representing the broader principle that countries with serious political disagreements can continue cooperating on projects intended to benefit humanity.<h2>Donald Trump in the Nobel Peace Prize race</h2>US President Donald Trump is also being discussed as a potential contender for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to receive the award, while reports indicate that several political figures have nominated him. However, experts cited in recent assessments have generally viewed his chances as relatively low. The ongoing US-Israel-led conflict with Iran is among the factors that could affect Trump's prospects. Ultimately, the Nobel Committee's decision is independent of public statements or claims about individual nominations.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/new-york-declares-statewide-disaster-emergency-over-measles-outbreak-what-s-happening-1791239434480">New York declares statewide disaster emergency over measles outbreak. What's happening?</a><h2>Other potential contenders</h2>Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also attracted attention after taking a firm stance against Trump's tariff policies and calling for greater international cooperation. Carney's name has appeared in prediction markets and expert discussions, although there is no public confirmation that he has been shortlisted by the Nobel Committee. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelenskyy and Pope Leo have also been mentioned as possible contenders. The winner will be announced in Oslo on October 9.

ISS emerges as a surprise contender for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize alongside Trump, Zelenskyy, Pope Leo, Mark Carney and humanitarian groups

As a result, names mentioned in expert assessments, prediction markets and public discussions should not be considered confirmed nominees. Why the ISS is being considered? The International Space Station has attracted attention as a symbol of international cooperation amid growing geopolitical tensions. The orbiting laboratory has brought together astronauts and scientists from the United States, Russia, Europe, Japan and Canada, providing a rare example of countries with significant political differences maintaining cooperation on a shared peaceful project. According to Haakon Gjerløw, acting director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), the ISS represents an unusual example of geopolitical rivals continuing to work together. The station has remained continuously occupied since November 2000, making it one of the longest-running examples of international scientific cooperation. If recognised, the ISS would likely be honoured not for a single scientific breakthrough but for representing the broader principle that countries with serious political disagreements can continue cooperating on projects intended to benefit humanity. Donald Trump in the Nobel Peace Prize race US President Donald Trump is also being discussed as a potential contender for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Ultimately, the Nobel Committee's decision is independent of public statements or claims about individual nominations. Also Read: New York declares statewide disaster emergency over measles outbreak. What's happening? Other potential contenders Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has also attracted attention after taking a firm stance against Trump's tariff policies and calling for greater international cooperation. Pope Leo, the first US-born pope, has repeatedly spoken about the war in West Asia, at times taking positions that have put him at odds with Trump. Humanitarian groups and international institutions Several humanitarian organisations and individuals are also being discussed in connection with the 2026 Peace Prize. Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi reacted to media reports of the Nobel Peace Prize being ‘offered’ to US President Donald Trump and termed the episode as shocking, while contrasting the incident with how he placed his own Nobel medal in trust for the people of India. Speaking at the launch of his book, ‘Karuna: The Power of Compassion’, at the Jaipur Literature Festival on Friday, Satyarthi said he was left “shocked” by the reports that a fellow Nobel laureate had “presented” her Peace Prize to Donald Trump, and without taking the name of the US President, said, “God, I’ve never seen any person in my life who was so crazy for the Nobel Prize.” Also Read: Khamenei calls Trump a ‘criminal,’ blames him for slander, casualties and damage during protest ‘Nobel Prize represents moral authority, not political validation’ Satyarthi referred to the Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado physically handing her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump at the White House during a meeting. Trump praised her gesture, but the Nobel Institute issued a press release clarifying that the Nobel Peace Prize is strictly non-transferable, stressing that while a medal may be symbolically handed over, the honour itself cannot be passed on to another person. “It has been reported in the press that the Nobel Committee said very clearly that it is not transferable,” Satyarthi said, adding that the Nobel Prize represents moral authority, not political validation. Satyarthi told Mukherjee that he wanted the medal to belong to the people of India but was told that there was no protocol to hand it over to the nation. When Satyarthi persisted and even offered to place it at Rajghat, Mahatma Gandhi’s memorial, a new protocol was created, and the medal was formally handed to the president to be kept on behalf of the country. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has filed a legal complaint against the Nobel Foundation, seeking to halt payments to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. WikiLeaks' Julian Assange Sues Nobel Panel Over Peace Prize to Machado

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Thursday (Dec 18), filed a legal complaint against the Nobel Foundation for giving Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. Assange alleges the committee converted 'an instrument of peace into an instrument of war' by disbursing funds to Machado. He claimed that if awarded to Macahdo, it would be gross misappropriation of funds and facilitation of war crimes and crimes against humanity. He sought to hold the release of more than $1 million to Machado claiming that it would mean financing of the crime of aggression. He has also demanded a detailed probe on Nobel Foundation officers.

<h2>What are Julian Assange's accusations?</h2>In a lengthy post on X, Wikileaks founder argued that the disbursement of the prize violates Alfred Nobel’s 1895 will, which mandates that the Peace Prize go to individuals who "conferred the greatest benefit to humankind" and promoted peace, fraternity between nations, or reduction of standing armies.&nbsp; In his complaint, Assange has named Nobel Foundation Chair Astrid Söderbergh Widding, Executive Director Hanna Stjärne, and 28 others. Opposing Machado's name, Assange claimed that she incited US military intervention in Venezuela, supported extrajudicial killings and military aggression and used her Peace Prize recognition to further escalation. The complaint also cites statements praising US President Donald Trump's military strikes and Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s conduct in Gaza. Julian Assange was wanted by the US on charges related to publishing classified documents via WikiLeaks and is now in Australia after the case concluded in June 2024. As the evidence for his claims, Assange shared that as many as 21 Norwegian peace organisations criticized Machado as 'the opposite of a peace laureate.' He said that Nobel laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel condemned the award as a mockery of Nobel’s will and Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) confirmed her calls for military intervention.

Maria Corina Machado's daughter, Ana Corina Sosa, accepted the Nobel Peace prize on her mother's behalf at a ceremony held in Oslo

Venezuelan opposition figure Maria Corina Machado, who has been living in hiding for over a year, will not appear at Wednesday’s (December 10) Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa Machado, will step in to receive the award and deliver her mother’s prepared remarks, organisers confirmed.<h2>Machado expected to arrive in Oslo by tomorrow morning says Nobel secretary</h2>"Unfortunately, she (Maria Corina Machado) will not be here in time for today's ceremony or for the other events. We are very happy that we will be able to welcome her in Oslo quite shortly" the secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Kristian Berg Harpviken was quoted as saying to news agency AFP ahead of the Nobel Peace award ceremony. "It is expected that she will arrive sometime between this evening and tomorrow morning" he added.<h2>Where is Maria Corina Machado?</h2>Machado has kept out of sight since August last year amid escalating tensions with President Nicolas Maduro’s government. Venezuela’s attorney general has warned that the 58-year-old would be treated as a “fugitive” if she attempted to travel abroad to claim the prize. Uncertainty surrounded her possible attendance until shortly before the ceremony’s scheduled start at 1:00 pm (1200 GMT), when Nobel Institute spokesperson Erik Aasheim told news agency AFP that Machado would not be present. Institute director Kristian Berg Harpviken told NRK radio that her daughter would collect the prize on her behalf. Harpviken said he had no information about Machado’s current location.&nbsp;Several of Machado’s family members, along with Latin American leaders such as Argentina’s President Javier Milei, are in Oslo for the event. But doubts had grown after the customary pre-ceremony press conference with the laureate was postponed and ultimately cancelled. Machado has long argued that Maduro stole Venezuela’s July 2024 election, an assertion supported by many foreign governments. The ceremony takes place as US military activity increases in the Caribbean and tensions rise over strikes on alleged drug-smuggling vessels. Maduro claims the operations are part of a US effort to overthrow him and seize Venezuela’s oil wealth, a claim Machado has openly disputed.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/after-microsoft-amazon-announces-35-billion-investment-to-boost-india-s-digital-future-1765360473366">After Microsoft, Amazon announces $35 billion investment to boost India’s digital future</a>&nbsp;Since going underground, Machado’s only public appearance was on January 9 in Caracas, where she protested against Maduro’s third-term inauguration.
