In response, Haley whispered into the microphone: "You're just scum."&nbsp;

Then, Haley told him, "Every time I hear you, I feel a little bit dumber for what you say."

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis was long thought to be the distant second among presidential hopefuls within the Republican Party but now his faltering campaign appears to be benefitting Nikki Haley, another presidential hopeful in the fray. Reuters reported that more donors are taking a close look at her candidacy even as former US president Donald Trump remains a frontrunner.

Four donors and and a source close to a major donor have reportedly said that they were impressed by Nikki Haley's performance in intra-party presidential debate in August and would be ready to donate to her campaign if she continues to emerge as a strong candidate.

Eyes are now on Haley and her performance at the second debate in California due to take place on Wednesday (September 27).

Not too long ago, DeSantis was seen as a formidable challenger to Trump. However, his own missteps and relentless attack from Trump appear to have weakened his position somewhat. However, his campaign retains support of some major donors.

Donors to any presidential campaign are crucial to keeping it afloat. The donors are now reportedly at least looking beyond DeSantis. This is being seen as indicative of struggles the DeSantis campaign is facing. The report by Reuters said that more donors are looking at Haley now.

"Until the first debate I hadn't seen her force of will and her presence. I absolutely would consider donating to her," said an unnamed donor, as quoted by Reuters. This donor has given more than USD 1 million for DeSantis' presidential nomination bid.

The buzz surrounding Haley's candidacy has also led uncommitted donors to pay attention to the race within the Republican Party. However, it's not a guarantee that those looking at her performance will ultimately back her quest for the Republican nomination.

DeSantis campaign spokesperson Andrew Romeo said that the campaign continues to see "overwhelming enthusiasm from grassroots and major supporters" and that it was looking forward to "continued fundraising success this quarter."

However, no matter who between the two gets more support, both of them will have an uphill battle as Trump is a clear frontrunner in the race.

The former US president is currently facing series of legal troubles. But this has apparently not deterred his supporters. Trump has repeatedly alleged that all the case against him were part of a political "witch hunt".

As DeSantis campaign loses steam, donors turn to Nikki Haley as alternative to Trump

Indian-American Nikki Haley has emerged as the only Republican presidential candidate who can beat President Joe Biden in the 2024 US elections, a new poll has revealed.

Haley, the only woman running for the Republican nomination, had a six percentage-point lead over Biden in a CNN/SSRS poll released on Thursday, with the President trailing Haley 49 per cent to 43 per cent in a hypothetical match between the two.

"Hypothetical matchups suggest there would be no clear leader should Biden face one of the other major Republican contenders, with one notable exception: Biden runs behind former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley," CNN reported.

The Haley campaign welcomed the polls saying: "This poll confirms what many Democrats and Republicans are saying: Democrats are terrified of running against Nikki Haley."

"Nikki Haley is our best hope in taking back the White House. We only have one shot. It’s time to play to win," Ken Farnaso, Haley's Press Secretary, said responding to the CNN poll.

Fresh out of the first Republican primary debate late last month, Haley told CBS News that she, and not Trump, is going to be the party's 2024 presidential nominee.

According to the CNN polls, the other Republican candidates polled neck-and-neck with Biden with former president Donald Trump, who is widely ahead in the party primary, drawing 47 per cent against the Biden's 46 per cent.

On a potential rematch between Trump and Biden, 47 per cent of those polled said they would choose the former President and 46 per cent said they would choose the latter.

In contrast, 44 per cent said that any Democratic nominee would be better than Trump, while 38 per cent said the former President is better than any Democratic pick.

Former Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Tim Scott both drew 46 per cent to Biden’s 44 per cent, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie received 44 per cent to Biden’s 42 per cent.

Nikki Haley,&nbsp;Republican presidential candidate and former South Carolina governor, in a recent interview&nbsp;criticised the age and health of some senior members of the US Senate.

Speaking to reporters in Kentucky, she called&nbsp;the US Senate&nbsp;"the most privileged nursing home in the country," and said that&nbsp;mental competency tests should be mandated for candidates over a certain age.

Haley's comments come in the wake of Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell suffering a second freeze during a media appearance. The senator was speaking to reporters in Covington, Kentucky, when&nbsp;the 81-year-old leader appeared to freeze for 30 seconds.

Previously, in July, the Senate Majority leader suffered a similar episode while speaking to the press&nbsp;at the US Capitol in Washington, DC.

"What I will say is, right now, the Senate is the most privileged nursing home in the country," said Haley in an interview with Fox News.

"I mean, Mitch McConnell has done some great things, and he deserves credit. But you have to know when to leave," she added.

As per a recent poll, about 75 per cent of Americans believe he is too old to run for President again.&nbsp;If re-elected, at the end of his second term, Biden will be 86 years old.

Haley has called for mental competency tests for candidates over 75.&nbsp;

"I wouldn't care if they did [tested those] over the age of 50," said Haley, adding that "these people are making decisions on our national security. They're making decisions on our economy, on the border."

"We need to know they're at the top of their game. You can't say that right now, looking at Congress," she remarked.

The war of words between GOP presidential nomination hopefuls Vivek Ramaswamy and Nikki Haley continues to heat up. In the latest exchange, 38-year-old Ramaswamy on his campaign website referred to Haley by her Indian birth name.

In an updated section of the website, aimed at dispelling the myths about him, Ramaswamy slammed Haley for her criticism of his position on the US relationship with Israel.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"WRONG. Keep lying, Nimarata Randhawa. The desperation is showing," read the website under the "Vivek Doesn't Support Israel" section.&nbsp;

"Don’t believe the opponents’ lies that he wants to cut aid to Israel – which makes zero sense as a foreign policy priority any time in the foreseeable future. We will not leave Israel hanging out to dry – ever. (But that didn’t stop his opponents from pouncing to lie about his position)."

Last week, the two sparred over Ukraine and Israel funding by the US at the debate stage in Milwaukee. Haley slammed Ramaswamy for lacking foreign policy experience and supporting a 'dictator' like Russian President Vladimir Putin while 'leaving' a friend like Israel.

Nearly an hour into the debate, the Fox News moderators posed questions on the Ukraine war and asked the eight candidates if they would continue supporting/funding Kyiv in its war against Moscow.&nbsp;

United States presidential contender Nikki Haley issued a warning on Sunday (July 2) over China's ramped-up military aggression. Haley said that the&nbsp;country is ahead of the US in a number of key aspects.&nbsp;

As she appeared on "Fox News Sunday," Haley slammed the Biden administration for giving priority to the woke agenda of the US military, while China prepared for war. &nbsp;

As mentioned in the report, the presidential contender argued that there's a need to focus on China's growth both economically and militarily — and a responsible administration would do so.&nbsp;

Haley told host, Shannon Bream, "China has been preparing for war with us for decades. And the way we have to deal with China is [to] not look at it tomorrow, because if we keep waiting to deal with them tomorrow, they will deal with us today."&nbsp;

China slams Nikki Haley's 'ash heap' comment

CNN chairman and CEO Chris Licht is out of the network after a controversial tenure of just one year, New York Times reported on Wednesday. He was hired by the company in May 2022 to balance out what the network’s new owners thought of as the channel’s liberal bias.

Warner Bros. Discovery became CNN’s new owner in April last year and turned to Licht to serve as the chairman of CNN. However, his 13-month-long stint at the company turned out to be one full of chaos and controversies.

David Zaslav, the chief executive of Warner Bros. Discovery, was quoted by New York Times as saying that he had a meeting with Licht and he was leaving the company effective immediately.

“For a number of reasons things didn’t work out, and that’s unfortunate,” Zaslav said. “It’s really unfortunate, and ultimately that’s on me. And I take full responsibility for that,” he further added.

In a recent statement, Trump stated that he wanted the war to end and that he would assist in negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

DeSantis too has expressed his support for a settlement to the war and said he hoped for an end to the fighting by the time he becomes the president in January 2025.&nbsp;

Haley, during a CNN town hall event in Iowa, criticized DeSantis for referring to the conflict as a "territorial dispute," a statement he has since retracted.&nbsp;

In the upcoming elections the number of Republican contenders will this week reach double digits, reports Reuters.

Despite being among the Republican contenders, Haley faces strong competition from Trump, who leads the field with 49 per cent support, and DeSantis, who follows with 19 per cent support in Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll conducted in May.&nbsp;

As per Reuters, Haley and other candidates polling in the single digits are attempting to differentiate themselves from DeSantis in the hopes that he stumbles, allowing them to emerge as the primary alternative to Trump.&nbsp;

Some candidates, including Haley, have also started criticising Trump directly, a departure from their previous reluctance to do so out of fear of alienating his loyal supporters.&nbsp;

Apart from Jill Biden, Senator Bernie Sanders also slammed Haley's proposal. Speaking to CBS News on February 19, Sanders, 81, called the proposal “absurd” and ageist.&nbsp;

"We are fighting racism, we're fighting sexism, we're fighting homophobia, I think we should also be fighting ageism. Trust people, look at people and say, you know, this person is competent, this person is not competent. There are a lot of 40-year-olds out there who ain't particularly competent," Sanders added.&nbsp;

'America can't be world's ATM': Nikki Haley attacks Pakistan, China yet again

In February, three developments in quick succession highlighted the growing political and economic clout of Indian-Americans in the United States, where their influence is out of proportion with their small share of the population.

The first was the surprise announcement, on February 15, by former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley that she would run for the US presidency in 2024. Just six days later, Vivek Ramaswamy, a wealthy conservative entrepreneur, announced he would join the 2024 presidential field.&nbsp;

They are challenging former president Donald Trump in the primary votes next year for presidential nominee of the Republican Party.

Two days after Ramaswamy’s unexpected entry, &nbsp;President Joe Biden named former Mastercard CEO Ajay Banga as his nominee for president of the Washington-based World Bank. If chosen, Banga will succeed David Malpass, who will step down at the end of June after coming under criticism for shrugging off the importance of tailoring loans for projects that could lessen the impact of climate change.

Born in the US of parents from Punjab, Haley is considered a long-shot for the presidency despite a winning personality and a high public profile after having served as the Trump administration’s ambassador at the United Nations. Ramaswamy is seen as an even longer shot. Born in the US of immigrant parents from Kerala, he is a 38-year-old entrepreneur with little public profile.&nbsp;

Ajay Banga was born of Sikh parents, raised, and educated in India. He had a stellar career as a business executive working for US corporations in India, including Nestle, PepsiCo and Citigroup, before moving to the United States where he became CEO of Mastercard and a US citizen. His appointment to the top job of the World Bank is virtually assured.

Under a long-standing agreement among member countries, the US gets to choose the World Bank president while the leadership of the International Monetary Fund goes to a European. When President Joe Biden announced the nomination, he described Banga, a turban-wearing Sikh, as “uniquely qualified” for the job.

What the three Indian-Americans who made headlines this month have in common is that they belong to a community US media routinely labels the country’s “model minority.” Why?

Indian-Americans make up around 1.35 percent of the US population; they play dominant roles in a number of fields, from IT and medicine to leadership of many of the country’s biggest companies. The median annual income of Indian-American families, at around $124,000 is almost twice that of the American national median income.

They also lead in educational attainment: The share of Indian-Americans with a bachelor’s degree or higher is twice that of the national average. Nine percent of physicians in the United States are of Indian descent, a remarkable number given their small share of the population.

Indian-American medical expertise was particularly obvious through the Covid crisis, when US television networks featured a long string of public health experts of Indian descent to comment on how to cope with the pandemic. President Biden made the Bihar-born Ashish Jha of Brown University his “Covid czar.”

The list of Indian-American CEOs of multi-billion companies, which contributed to the “model minority” label, is long and impressive. To mention a few: Sundar Pichai, who heads Google and its parent company Alphabet; Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft; Raj Subramaniam of Fedex, Arvind Krishna of IBM and Laxman Narasimhan of Starbucks.

Their multi billion-dollar pay packages clearly contribute to the oft-quoted median income being twice that of the national median.

Professional, financial and academic success have not inoculated Indian-Americans from discrimination. A wide-ranging survey conducted by YouGov in 2020 found that nearly half of 1,200 respondents said they had been subject to some form of discrimination. Three in five said it was from white Americans because of the colour of their skin.

But there is another form of discrimination – Indian vs Indian –which was brought in sharp focus on February 22 when Seattle became the first city in the United States to ban discrimination based on caste, the age-old system that divides Hindus into rigid hierarchical groups.

Seattle’s City Council passed the caste discrimination ban in a 6-1 vote, responding to letters and &nbsp;petitions signed by thousands in the weeks before the &nbsp;decisive vote. The ordinance was introduced by the only Indian-American member of the council, Kshama Sawant, who was born in Pune to a Brahmin family..

Home to Microsoft, Amazon and Starbucks, Seattle has become one of America’s two most important tech hubs. Like the other, Silicon Valley, Seattle has been a magnet for Indian-American techies and entrepreneurs.

It remains to be seen whether any city in Silicon Valley, where there also have been complaints about caste discrimination, will follow Seattle’s example.

Haley joined the board of Boeing but resigned after less than a year because she opposed the company’s request for a $60 billion bailout to help the aircraft manufacturer cope with the coronavirus crisis. She described her decision as “a matter of philosophical principle.”

In her brief announcement speech, Haley pointed out that the Republican Party had lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections, having failed to win the confidence of the majority of Americans. “Well, that ends today. If you are tired of losing, then put your trust in a new generation.”

To stress what she sees as the need for generational change in US&nbsp;politics, not only the Republican Party, the 51-year-old newly baked candidate called for term limits as well as regular “mental competency tests” for politicians over the age of 75. This was aimed at both Trump, who is 76, and President Joe Biden, who is 80.

Not to mention 30 members of the House of Representatives and 16 Senators. The average age of Americans is 38.5 years and some polls suggest that there is broad support for younger leadership.&nbsp;

“America is not past our prime,” said Haley, "it’s just that our politicians are past theirs.” However, the flaw in stressing her relative youth and vitality is that Ron DeSantis, who is expected to enter the race closer to the beginning of the primaries, is even younger: 44.&nbsp;

In challenging her former boss, Haley broke a promise not to run if Trump did. Former Governor Larry Hogan, who had earlier stated that he was “actively and seriously considering” running, had talked about the “non-Trump lane”. “There’s a non-Trump lane right now that’s as wide as the Trump lane, and there’s no one in that lane,” Hogan had stated in an interview. With speculations around Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also joining the run for nomination, the question arises will Nikki Haley clinch victory or will she become a catalyst for Trump's win?

The announcement

On February 14, Nikki Haley stated that she is running for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination against her former boss Donald Trump in&nbsp;the Republican nomination race.

“It’s time for a new generation of leadership,” said Haley in a video shared by her team. Born to Indian migrants in Bamberg, South Carolina, Haley was earlier named Nimrata Nikki Randhawa. Her parents were from Punjab, India, and were teachers by profession. She grew up as a Sikh but converted to Christianity after she married Michael Haley in 1996.

Speaking about her background, Haley said, “I am the proud daughter of Indian immigrants. They came to America and settled in a small Southern town. My father wore a turban. My mother wore a sari. I was a brown girl in a black and white world. We faced discrimination and hardships, but my parents never gave in to grievance and hate.”

Shift in politics

A clear theme of Haley's presidential election campaign is unity, as in her announcement video the leader was seen emphasising on bringing people together.&nbsp;Haley recalled how she led South Carolina through the tragedy as a governor when nine Black parishioners were killed by a white supremacist at the Mother Emmanuel AME Church in 2015.

"We turned away from fear towards God and the values that still make our country the freest and greatest in the world," she stated. It is felt Haley feels that the issue of race and call for unity may work in her favour, but experts believe it&nbsp;otherwise.

AAPI Victory Alliance's Varun Nikore believes that Haley failed to represent the community. Nikore added, “There’s a multitude of issues where she specifically and the Republican Party are diametrically opposed to where AAPIs are.”&nbsp;The data also fails to show a bright future for Haley.

As per the Asian American voter survey carried out in 2022, only 15 per cent of Indian American voters support Republicans. Meanwhile, 56 per cent are in favour of Democrats, and 19 per cent go for independent. With such an evident ratio of Indian Americans supporting Democrats, it is difficult to understand which is Haley's target community.&nbsp;

The falling number in polls

If the polls are to be considered, there is a tough road ahead for Haley. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, just 4 per cent of registered Republicans were in support of Haley taking over as president.

Meanwhile, Trump gained votes of 43 per cent of the registered Republicans, while Florida Governor Ron DeSantis received 31 per cent. The polls were conducted from February 6 to 13. Other polls conducted recently also found Trump leading the race. As per The Bulwark survey, 28 per cent of Republican party votes were ready to support Trump.

Few surveys also said that Haley would play spoiler. According to the Yahoo News/YouGov poll, Florida governor DeSantis was leading Trump by 45 per cent to 41 per cent. “In a hypothetical three-way match-up, Haley effectively plays the spoiler, attracting 11 per cent of Republicans and Republican-leaners while DeSantis’s support falls by roughly the same amount (to 35 per cent), leaving Trump with more votes than either of them&nbsp;at 38%,” Yahoo News stated.

Haley's wavering stance

For many, Haley, as a leader, is someone who has been wavering in her stand on issues. She is known to have shared a hot-and-cold relationship with her boss.

Once a high critic of Trump, she later became his ambassador to the UN only to leave the Trump administration in 2018 and again heavily criticise the leader. However, in 2022, Haley seemed to have amended her relationship with Trump. She had also claimed that she won't run for the presidential election if Trump announces his candidacy, a decision she again wavered on.

Hampton Falls' Nancy Parker also said that it will take some convincing.&nbsp;"I think Nikki Haley has a lot of potential but I just want to see for myself what she has to say. She has a reputation of being a bit of a flip-flopper. She's changed her mind on many important items over the last two years, but I'm still willing to come and listen to her,” Parker added.

With Haley heading to Iowa next week for a few campaign stops, it will be interesting to see the kind of response she receives from the people.

According to them, the video is from 2010 and features an unnamed neo-Confederate group.

“I think that they do,” Haley can be heard saying. “I mean, the constitution says that,” she added. She, however, said that South Carolina, from where the Republican was elected as the governor, should not secede.

According to reports, the 2010 clip pertains to an interview conducted by the Sons of Confederate Veterans — &nbsp;a non-profit organisation of male descendants of Confederate soldiers who commemorate their ancestors and promotes the pseudohistorical&nbsp;Lost Cause&nbsp;ideology and white supremacy.

The video appeared to show Haley discussing the placement of a Confederate flag on statehouse grounds and expressing support for Confederate History Month in schools, which she compared to “Black History Month … as long as it’s done in a positive way and not in a negative way, and doesn’t harm anyone”.

When Haley was also asked about the cause of the civil war, she said, “I think you had one side of the civil war that was fighting for tradition and one side of the civil war that was fighting for change.”

Talking about dealing with US foes, Haley vowed tough action against US adversaries such as Iran, North Korea and China.
