If he goes head-to-head with Trump, current figures say that DeSantis would get support from 45 per cent of Republicans while 41 per cent would back Trump.

However, If Haley enters the race, she would split the 'anti-Trump' vote, thereby making things easy for the former president.&nbsp;

The survey involved 1585 adult&nbsp;respondents in the US who registered their opinion between February 2 and February 6.

Nikki Haley is expected to announce her candidature on February 15. If she enters the race for the Republican ticket, the poll says she would get support from 11 per cent Republicans and Republican leaners. DeSantis, who is leading the opinion polls now would command support from just 35 per cent while Trump will race ahead with support from 38 per cent of Republicans.

During the Trump administration, Haley wasn't on the best of terms with&nbsp;other White House officials and was often seeing pushing her own public persona. After she quit in 2018, speculation was rife that she would challenge Trump in 2020, or replace Vice President Mike Pence. However, she didn't do either.

Last year, when asked by reporters whether she is considering running for president, Haley had said, "After November, we’ll figure it out. But you know what I’ve said, I’ve never lost a race. I’m not going to start now. If there’s place for me, we’ll put a 100 per cent in, and we’ll finish it."

"A lot of people have asked if I’m going to run for president," Haley told a crowd at a Las Vegas confab. "Now that the midterms are over, I’ll look at it in a serious way."

I think we need a young generation to come in, step up, and really start fixing things," she stated. &nbsp;

Speaking about the statement she gave on Trump, Haley stated that she had "said that before we surrendered to Afghanistan, it was before we saw this high inflation and high crime, it was before we saw drugs infesting all of our states, it was before we saw our foreign policy in disarray, so a lot has changed."

Former secretary of state Mike Pompeo, in his new memoir claimed that Nikki Haley plotted with Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner to become vice-president, when she was serving as the ambassador to the United Nations during Donald Trump's government, stated Guardian in a report.

Talking about his anger when Haley was able to get a personal Oval Office meeting with Trump without Pompeo's involvement, he writes that in fact John Kelly, who was Trump's chief of staff, was "played" by Haley, and instead of getting a meeting with Trump alone, Haley was accompanied by Ivanka and her husband, who held the position of senior advisors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

I can’t confirm this, but (Kelly) was certain he had been played, and he was not happy about it. Clearly, this visit did not reflect a team effort but undermined our work for America.”&nbsp;

The whole controversy has been clearly stated in the new book of Pompeo titled "Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love" which is set to get published next week. The report was published by the Guardian after it received a copy of the book.

The story Haley is not only gossip added in the book which also claims that Trump had a “nutty idea” that Pompeo can hold the position of secretary of defence and secretary of state at the same time.

However, the Haley story is firmly in Washington reportage's vein which Pompeo always disdains. It further confirms reports that Trump was actually considering removing Mike Pence from the position of vice president for Haley, a rumoured story which was completely denied by Trump in 2019.&nbsp;

It will also fuel reports claiming that fundraising is being carried out by Kushner’s family for Haley before her 2024 run.

"We need to make sure that we are going on an anti-terrorist effort across the world, because we are now going to see -- with this moral victory that the jihadists have, you are going to see a heavy recruitment campaign around the world. You are going to see more lone wolf situations,"&nbsp;she explained. "We need to make sure we are protected. We need to make sure our cybersecurity is strong, because actors like Russia are going to continue to hack us because we show no signs of willing to fight back. We need to watch China, because I think you are going to see China make a move for Bagram Air Force Base."

Speaking during a fireside chat event organised by the Indian Voices for Trump in the battleground state of Philadelphia, Haley, former US Ambassador to the UN, said President Trump has "put China on notice".

"China is our absolute number one threat right now, a huge national security threat. With the trade deal that the President did, not only did he get a better trade deal for us, he put China on notice with intellectual property," the 48-year-old said.

"He has made sure that they know that they cannot turn around and steal intellectual property. They cannot go and spy on our universities, and that we are going to hold them accountable as we go forward," she added.

The two-term governor of South Carolina, Haley was the first Cabinet-ranking Indian-American in any presidential administration. She is now campaigning for Trump ahead of the US election.

The US and China relations have swiftly deteriorated in the past few months over a range of issues including COVID-19 origin, Indo Pacific, Hong Kong and trade disagreements.

"The last administration, under Biden, Obama gave literally planes full of cash to the largest sponsor of terror. And they took that cash and funnelled it and spread terrorism throughout Yemen, and Lebanon, and Syria, and Iraq. And all these places. The President pulled out of the Iran deal so they will have the money to spend," she said.

The presential elections in the US will be held on Tuesday, November 3.

"Now, there's actually a method that the President using, which looks, we should not just use a UN vote to decide who to get funding, but it should be one of the things we look at. And we need to be smart about how we do foreign policy," she added

The US officials, time and again, have accused Pakistan of sponsoring terrorism.

In 2018, Trump administration suspended USD 300 million in funding to Islamabad over what it calls the government's failure to take action against terrorists.

"The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies and deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools. They give safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan, with little help. No more!" Trump had tweeted in January 2018.

On June 24, the US had released its Congressional-mandated 2019 Country Reports on Terrorism, in which it accused Pakistan of remaining a "safe harbour" for regional terrorist groups. India has also repeatedly accused Pakistan of sponsoring terrorism.

I was a brown girl in a black and white world,” she said on Monday at the mostly-virtual four-day convention during which she fully backed President Trump and his policies.

Born as Nimrata Randhawa in South Carolina, she is the daughter of Ajit Singh Randhawa and Raj Kaur Randhawa, who emigrated from Amritsar in Punjab.

Haley said her family faced discrimination and hardship but her parents never gave in to grievance and hate.

"My mom built a successful business. My dad taught 30 years at a historically Black college. And the people of South Carolina chose me as their first minority and first female governor,” Haley said.

“America is a story that’s a work in progress. Now is the time to build on that progress, and make America even freer, fairer, and better for everyone. That’s why it’s tragic to see so much of the Democratic Party turn a blind eye toward riots and rage,” she said, in a speech that sent her already-intense 2024 presidential primary buzz off the charts.

Haley said the American people know they can do better.

"And of course we know that every single black life is valuable. The black cops who’ve been shot in the line of duty – they matter. The black small business owners who’ve watched their life’s work go up in flames – they matter," she said.

"The black kids who’ve been gunned down on the playground – their lives matter too. And their lives are being ruined and stolen by the violence on our streets,” she said.

She said things were not like this five years back.

“It doesn’t have to be like this. It wasn’t like this in South Carolina five years ago. Our state came face-to-face with evil. A white supremacist walked into Mother Emanuel Church during Bible Study," she said, referring to the 2015 Charleston church shooting, in which nine African Americans were killed.

"Twelve African Americans pulled up a chair and prayed with him for an hour. Then he began to shoot,” she said.

“After that horrific tragedy, we didn’t turn against each other. We came together – black and white, Democrat and Republican. Together, we made the hard choices needed to heal – and removed a divisive symbol, peacefully and respectfully," she added.

What happened then should give us hope now, Haley said.

"America isn’t perfect. But the principles we hold dear are perfect. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that even on our worst day, we are blessed to live in America,” Haley said.

“It’s time to keep that blessing alive for the next generation. This President, and this Party, are committed to that noble task. We seek a nation that rises together, not falls apart in anarchy and anger. We know that the only way to overcome America’s challenges is to embrace America’s strengths,” she said.

"We must choose the only candidate who has and who will continue delivering on that vision," she said, strongly backing President Trump for re-election in the November 3 presidential election.

Meanwhile, US media reports said Haley's speech at the convention was an important symbolic moment for the Republican Party. She invoked her immigrant heritage and election as South Carolina's governor despite her "Brown skin" as a validation of the American Dream and the country's racial progress.

China under President Xi Jinping has become more aggressive and bullish, former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Tuesday, asserting that such a behavior is unlikely to last long.

Indian-American Nikki Haley, in an interview to Fox News, said the Chinese were quiet and strategic during her tenure at the UN. They moved and made sure that they were trying to get positions in certain areas, and trying to get things done behind closed doors, she said.

"Then once President Xi kind of named himself king, they got very aggressive. They got very bullish. They started to kind of point their fingers in countries'' faces saying, you''d better vote with us. They started to be very aggressive at the UN in wanting positions and wanting to have leadership roles. And they started talking down to everyone," Ms Haley alleged.

With their Belt and Road initiative, the Chinese started really trying to buy up these infrastructures or partnering with smaller countries on infrastructure projects, she said.

"But yet they go in, they wouldn't assimilate with the countries. The countries didn''t like their attitude when they were coming in. Now we look at it, it's getting more aggressive in tone," said Haley, who resigned as UN ambassador in 2018 after nearly two years in the post.

"But this can't last. You know, any country that is not letting its people be free, there will be a time when the people rebel. So right now they''re continuing to push, they''re continuing to put pressure on Hong Kong, as we''ve seen. We''re starting to see the pressure go to Taiwan, the South China Sea, in India. All of this is them playing kind of a king of the mountain scenario," Haley said.

She said the US needs to "let them know we''re on to them, we need to actually follow through on the intellectual property measures that were in that trade deal that we had and hold them accountable."

"We need to make sure we continue to let them know we''re building up our military so that they know not to mess with us. We need to make sure that our American companies understand that when you do business in China, you are required to work with the Chinese military. That is a national security threat to America. And we really need to have those conversations with those Americans," Ms Haley said in response to a question.

Supporting President Donald Trump's decision to close the Chinese consulate in Houston, Ms Haley alleged that these consulates have been "spy centres" for a long time.

"I mean there's no question that they had some illegal activity going on in those consulates. So I was thrilled to see them close down the one in Houston, which was known to be kind of the epicentre of where all of this was going on. And I think, you know, when you have Chinese officials being hidden at consulates, it goes to show you''re doing something wrong," she said.

“I think that you have (Democratic nominee) Joe Biden, who has said that China is not the problem and who was against the travel ban to China and who has not shown, in any of his time that he was in the Obama administration, as realizing the threat that China had. So, I think it will be one of the factors that's going to be very important in this next election,” she said.

“I can tell you right now, I'm going to be campaigning and working very hard for president Trump. I think where we have come on foreign policy, where we saw the economy prior to COVID is very strong. I believe in the policies that he's put forward and I'll be campaigning hard for him and look forward to a win by president Trump in November,” she said.

“That was warranted. They are natural allies. India and the United States are a lot of the same values, the same work ethic, the same family values. It's important that we just continue to take that relationship forward,” she said.

“Everyone is going to start to look at India as they're looking at Vietnam and other places to see how they can get less dependent on China," she said.

“If India can make some concessions in order to bring all of this trade in, I think that there will be massive amounts, not just from the United States, but from other countries that really lean into India to try and do those things,” Haley said.

Haley, who has founded a new policy group 'Stand America Now' that will focus on how to keep the US safe, strong, and prosperous, wrote in an op-ed that when the US provides aid to nations, "it is more than fair to ask what the US Gets in return for our generosity" but instead Pakistan routinely opposed the US position at the UN on several issues.

"In 2017, Pakistan received nearly $1 billion in US foreign aid, the sixth most of any country. Much of the aid went to the Pakistani military. Some went for road, highway, and energy projects to assist the Pakistani people," Haley wrote in the op-ed 'Foreign Aid Should Only Go To Friends'.&nbsp;

"On all key votes at the UN, Pakistan opposed the American position 76 per cent of the time. Much more troubling, Pakistan also has a long history of harbouring terrorists who have killed US troops in Afghanistan," she said.&nbsp;

Haley, the former Governor of South Carolina, added that the Trump Administration has "already wisely restricted assistance to Pakistan, but there is much more to be done."&nbsp;

Haley, who had stepped down as the US envoy to the UN at the end of last year, has previously strongly criticised Pakistan for continuing to harbour terrorists that turn around and kill American soldiers while taking billions of dollars in foreign aid from the US.&nbsp;

In an interview to US magazine 'The Atlantic' in December, Haley had said the US did not need to give money to countries that wish harm to America, go behind its back and try and "stop us from doing things".&nbsp;

"The one example I'll give you is, look at Pakistan. Giving them over a billion dollars, and they continue to harbour terrorists that turn around and kill our soldiers that's never okay. She was referring to the reaction of a group of employees she spoke to who were apprehensive about the outcome of the election. She never intended to imply that all employees feel the same way.”

"That those past comments may hinder her chances are a reminder that Mr. Trump does not have a large circle of loyalists to choose from for top positions," the report said.

A report from The Financial Times had said earlier that former UN ambassador Nikki Haley was among the candidates for the World Bank post.

The report said the "decision-making process for the top post at the World Bank was fluid" and "initial stages and early front-runners and candidates often fall off the radar".

"Before the president makes his ultimate pick, Trump often makes his own gut decisions about whom to chose," it added.

Under an unwritten agreement, the United States, which is the bank's largest shareholder, has always chosen its leader since the institution was founded following World War II, however, bank's board has said that Kim's successor will be "open, merit-based and transparent."

The World Bank Board had said last week that it would start accepting nominations for a new leader early next month and name a replacement for Kim by mid-April.

"I worry that we will grow ever more isolated on this, the most important of world stages," he said.

A US resolution championed by Ambassador Nikki Haley to condemn the Palestinian Hamas movement at the United Nations for firing rockets at Israel failed to win enough votes for adoption on Thursday.

The proposed measure won 87 votes in the General Assembly, falling short of the required two-thirds majority. Fifty-eight countries opposed the measure and 32 abstained.

Haley, who steps down from her post at the end of the year, has repeatedly accused the United Nations of having an anti-Israel bias and has defended Israel in its latest confrontation with Hamas, the Islamist militant group that has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007.

It was the first proposed resolution condemning Hamas to be presented to the 193-nation assembly, which has been meeting since 1946.

Speaking ahead of the vote, Haley said the measure "would right a historic wrong" and "put the General Assembly on the side of truth and balance in the effort to achieve peace in the Middle East."

"The question before us now is whether the UN thinks terrorism is acceptable if, and only if, it is directed against Israel," she told the assembly.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump pledged to work toward denuclearisation at their landmark June summit in Singapore. But the agreement was short on specifics and negotiations have made little headway.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had been due to meet North Korean officials in New York on Thursday, but the State Department said on Wednesday it would be postponed to a later date. It gave no reason for the delay.

The North Korean mission to the United Nations did not respond to a request for comment.

Describing the relationship between Washington and Pyongyang as "cordial," Haley said she did not think there was a "major issue" and she believed the talks would be rescheduled.

The UN Security Council met to discuss sanctions on North Korea on Thursday at the request of Russia. Haley has accused Russia of cheating on UN sanctions on North Korea.

After the short meeting, she told reporters Russia is looking to lift banking restrictions, which she said they are not following appropriately.

"We're concerned about the humanitarian situation in North Korea, but the truth always comes out," she said. "So now we know what their agenda is, we know exactly why they're trying to do it and we're not going to let it happen."

Russia's envoy did not speak to reporters after exiting the meeting. The Russian UN mission issued a statement later saying North Korea faces "serious humanitarian problems" due to the UN sanctions resolutions and urged the Security Council to fix the problem.

"We consider such a situation to be absolutely unacceptable and actually violating the decisions of the council as they should not be directed against the population of the DPRK (North Korea) or the activity of humanitarian agencies," the Russian mission said.

AID IN LIMBO

Several requests by humanitarian groups for approval to ship aid goods to North Korea have been in limbo for months after the United States repeatedly asked for more time to consider them, an issue some diplomats had planned to raise in Thursday's meeting, according to documents seen by Reuters.

The UN Security Council has unanimously backed sanctions since 2006 to choke off funding for Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Aid groups, however, can request exemptions to send humanitarian assistance to the impoverished, isolated Asian state.

Requests are made to the 15-member Security Council's North Korea sanctions committee, which operates by consensus.

China and Russia have said the Security Council should reward Pyongyang for "positive developments" this year. But the United States and other Western powers say sanctions must be enforced until there is full denuclearisation.

"We have given a lot of carrots up until now. We're not going to get rid of the stick because they have not done anything to warrant getting rid of the sanctions yet," Haley said.

According to committee documents, a September request by a US-based charity and August requests by an Ireland-based aid group and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have yet to be given the green light.
