The United States' National Christmas Tree on Tuesday (Nov 28)&nbsp;was knocked over as strong winds roared through the Washington area. The nearly 40-foot tree from Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia fell over during a strong wind gust, said the National Park Service.

<h2>Is it salvageable?</h2>

Soon after the tree toppled over, The National Park Service said: "As the saying goes, 'the show must go on'". It also said that it was "looking at all possibilities to ensure a successful event this year". The annual tree lighting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday (Nov 30).

The National Park Service spokesperson Jasmine Shanti in a statement said that a snapped cable was replaced, and the tree was set upright.

"After assessing the tree's condition and replacing a snapped cable, the tree is now upright," she said.

On its website, the agency warned that for the Washington area, "occasional wind gusts to gale force" would be possible through Tuesday evening.

The National Christmas Tree is a 100-year-old annual Christmas holiday tradition. Since 1923, every year, the US President in a ceremony lights the tree.&nbsp;

As per this year's schedule, the National Christmas Tree which is located in the White House's President Park will be lighted by President Joe Biden on November 30. From December 2nd till January 1st, the 40-foot tree will be available for public viewing.

The tradition began on December 24, 1923, when the then President Calvin Coolidge lit a 48-foot balsam fir from Vermont that was erected in the middle of the Ellipse.

<h2>Is it a 100-year-old tree?</h2>

No, the tree was delivered to the White House Ellipse on November 14. Over the 100 years of this holiday tradition, the National Christmas Tree has been replaced many times.

The last one was planted in October 2021, but had to be taken down after it developed a fungal infection.

In the one century of this holiday tradition, at least three National Christmas trees have fallen victim to Washington's winds, reports The Daily Beast.

David Fuller, the man believed to be the worst necrophiliac killer Britain has ever seen, could carry out his nefarious abuse of over 100 women and girls due to "serious failings" at his workplace, found an inquiry on Tuesday.&nbsp;

An inquiry found that Fuller's string of abuses was aided by the hospital's "missed opportunities to question" his working practices.

<h2>Fuller and his crimes</h2>

Between 2005 and 2020, David Fuller abused the bodies of at least 101 women and girls at Kent hospitals: Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust.&nbsp;

In 2021, Fuller admitted to killing two women 25-year-old Wendy Knell and 20-year-old Caroline Pierce. He said that he committed the murders in 1987 in separate attacks in Tunbridge Wells, Kent.&nbsp;

Subsequently, he admitted to engaging in necrophilia on many occasions. He confessed to abusing the bodies of many women he found in mortuaries. His victims ranged between the ages of nine and a hundred years.&nbsp;

A search of his home uncovered more than 800,000 images and 500 videos of his "persistent interest" in abusing, raping and murdering women.

For his shocking crimes, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars. He was given two life sentences for the murders. In addition, he was sentenced to 16 years behind bars for abusing corpses, so the 69-year-old will die in prison.&nbsp;

<h2>Inquiry findings</h2>

An inquiry into his crimes found that "there were missed opportunities to question Fuller's working practices".

The Guardian quotes Inquiry chair Sir Jonathan Michael as saying that the abuse "had caused shock and horror across our country and beyond".

"He routinely worked beyond his contracted hours, undertaking tasks in the mortuary that were not necessary or which should not have been carried out by someone with his chronic back problems. This was never properly questioned," he added.

Michael in the report released on Tuesday (Nov 28) said, "The offences that Fuller committed were truly shocking and he will never be released from prison."

He chalked up Fuller's barbarities to "failures of management, of governance, of regulation, failure to follow standard policies and procedures, together with a persistent lack of curiosity."

As per the report, there was "little regard" given to who was accessing the mortuary. It said that Fuller, who worked as the maintenance supervisor at hospitals, visited the mortuaries around 444 times in a year, yet it went "unnoticed and unchecked".

Talking to reporters, he also said&nbsp;senior bosses were allegedly "aware of problems in the running of the mortuary from as early as 2008".

<h2>How can such crimes be prevented?</h2>

The inquiry, as per BBC, has made 17 recommendations to prevent "similar atrocities". These include the installation of CCTV cameras in mortuaries and post-mortem rooms. Making it compulsory for maintenance staff to carry out tasks in these areas in pairs was also recommended.

Furthermore, it recommended that the "practice of leaving deceased people out of mortuary fridges overnight" or while maintenance is carried out should be put to an end.

Another inquiry to review how the deceased are cared for around the UK was launched in July and its findings are expected to be released in 2024.

Just days after X owner Elon Musk agreed to post brandishing a "hideous" antisemitic conspiracy theory on the platform, several major advertisers have paused their ads on the site.

This includes Walt Disney Co, Warner Bros Discovery and NBCUniversal parent Comcast.

<h2>A pause in revenue?</h2>

Musk's endorsement of the post may leave some impact on X's (formerly Twitter) revenue. On Wednesday (Nov 8), the X owner said that the user who referenced the "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory was speaking "the actual truth."

This was labelled "hideous," and an "abhorrent promotion of antisemitic and racist hate" by the White House.

Due to Musk's enthusiastic agreement with the antisemitic post, several major X advertisers have announced that they will pause their advertisements on the social media site.

As per an Axios report, Apple said it will pause "all advertising on X".&nbsp;

Media Matters reports that the iPhone maker's ad ran beside tweets praising Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. Not just Apple, ads for brands like Bravo, Oracle, Xfinity, and IBM were also seen beside such posts.

IBM has also suspended advertising on X. In a statement to the Financial Times, the tech company said that it has "suspended all advertising on X while we investigate this entirely unacceptable situation."

Furthermore, as per The Guardian citing media reports, Warner Bros, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Disney and Comcast/NBCUniversal have also taken similar steps.&nbsp;

<h2>Troubles mount for Musk</h2>

As Musk faces a serious dip in X's advertising revenues, on Thursday, a US Federal Judge ruled that he cannot intervene in the dispute between him and the FTC (Federal Trade Commission).

US Magistrate Judge Thomas Hixon rejected X's attempt to invalidate a longstanding privacy settlement with the FTC. CNN reports that he said that the District Court for the Northern District of California lacks the authority to grant X's request.

This means the Tesla CEO may be forced to cooperate with federal investigators looking into X's business decisions, which the regulator allege may have jeopardised user security and privacy.

Donald Trump has been given the green light to remain on the state's presidential primary ballot. On Friday, judge Sarah Wallace ruled this despite allegations that the ex-president incited political violence during the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

<h2>Trump on the ballot</h2>

As the election season in the US unfolds, Donald Trump, as per AFP, is yet to be&nbsp;removed from a single ballot.
&nbsp;
The Colorado Judge's decision comes after similar rulings in several other states — including Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, and New Hampshire.

Wallace on Friday acknowledged Donald Trump's role in inciting supporters who stormed the US Capitol to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden's election victory.&nbsp;

Citing Section 3, she concluded "that Trump acted with the specific intent to incite political violence and direct it at the Capitol&nbsp;to halt the transfer of power to Biden."&nbsp;

Section 3 of the 14th Amendment of US constitution bars individuals from holding public office if they engaged in "insurrection or rebellion" after pledging to support the Constitution.

Recognising the ambiguity of the 14th Amendment's language, Judge Wallace said that "it appears to the court that for whatever reason the drafters of Section Three did not intend to include a person who had only taken the Presidential Oath".

Colorado Judge rules Trump can stay on presidential primary ballot despite Capitol attack incitement

Donald Trump, the former US president, unleashed a blitzkrieg of social media outrage at a member of the court staff — barely an hour after the gag order on prohibiting him from doing so was relaxed temporarily.&nbsp;

<h2>Social media tirade</h2>

Taking to Truth Social, his own social media platform, Trump accused Allison Greenfield of being a "politically biased and out of control, Trump-hating clerk."

Greenfield has been assisting judge Arthur Engoron in the $250m civil lawsuit trial, which will decide the fate of the former president's New York-based family business, the Trump Organization.

Trump also accused Enrogon of driving businesses and jobs out of New York City, and once again attacked the city's attorney general for launching the suit against him.

Trump civil fraud trial: Ex-president launches tirade against clerk soon after pause on gag order

A historic summit in Ghana has fuelled a global movement for reparations for slavery. It witnessed a unique collaboration between the African Union (AU) and the Caribbean Community (Caricom) — with the partnership aiming to create a "united front", urging European nations to acknowledge and address the historical atrocities associated with slavery.

<h2>Objectives of the partnership</h2>

The collaboration between the 55-member AU and the 20-member Caricom as per the Guardian seeks to intensify pressure on European nations. It wants to persuade European Nations, especially those with a history of slave ownership, to recognize and pay for their "historical mass crimes".

Delegates also unveiled plans for a global fund, based in Africa, dedicated to expediting the campaign for reparatory justice.

<h2>Draft proclamation</h2>

A preliminary proclamation circulated at the conference outlined the AU's commitment to exploring "litigation options" and collaborating with the United Nations to assess "whether acts of enslavement against Africans constituted serious violations of human rights at the time they were committed".&nbsp;

The finalised document, titled 'the Accra proclamation', is anticipated to be released this weekend.

<h2>Quantification of slave trade</h2>

Speaking at the opening of the summit, Ghana's President's Nana Akufo-Addo emphasised the staggering consequences of slavery. He said, "The entire period of slavery meant that our progress, economically, culturally, and psychologically, was stifled."

"There are legions of stories of families who were torn apart … You cannot quantify the effects of such tragedies, but they need to be recognised," he added.

He also said that the "entire continent of Africa deserves a formal apology from the European nations involved in the slave trade".

"No amount of money can restore the damage caused by the transatlantic slave trade and its consequences. But surely, this is a matter that the world must confront and can no longer ignore."

Between the 16th and 19th century, European nations forcibly enslaved over 12 million Africans on plantations.

<h2>Resistance from European Nations</h2>

"As part of standard diplomatic engagement" the conference was attended by the British Foreign Office. However, the UK government continues to maintain its resistance to the reparations concept.&nbsp;

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has firmly rejected the idea of a comprehensive apology for the UK's historical role in slavery and colonialism. Earlier this year, he said: "trying to unpick our history is not the right way forward and is not something we will focus our energies on."

Italy on Thursday became the first European Union nation to ban the production and sale of lab-grown meat. Citing health concerns and a need to safeguard its livestock industry, Italy's lower house approved the ban.

<h2>What is banned?</h2>

The nation has banned the so-called cultivated meat&nbsp;that is grown in labs using animal tissue cells.

It also places a ban on the use of labels that describe plant-based protein as meat. As per AFP, every violation of this ban can chalk up fines ranging from 10,000 to 60,000 euros ($10,900-$65,000).&nbsp;

The law received a green light from Italy's senate earlier. The law says it seeks to "protect the national livestock heritage" while recognising its cultural, socio-economic and environmental value.

It also seeks to ensure "a high level of protection of human health", while protecting the interests of consumers and their right to information about what they are eating.

Italy's main agricultural lobby Coldiretti calls lab-grown meat 'Frankenstein' meat. On Thursday, the organisation said the law represents "a commitment to defend the Mediterranean diet".&nbsp;

Italy's Agriculture Minister, Francesco Lollobrigida, said that cultivated meat "interrupts the virtuous relationship between land, man and work that for millennia has accompanied us and allowed us to maintain the land".

However, an Italian non-profit, The International Organisation for the Protection of Animals criticises the law, calling it pointless.&nbsp;

"This ban is completely useless today since cultured meat has not yet been approved for human consumption in Europe and therefore cannot be marketed."

<h2>EU and lab-grown meat</h2>

The European Union, as per AFP,&nbsp;considers lab-grown meat a 'novel food' which means that any new product will be subject to authorisation from the bloc. If the bloc approves cultivated meat, Italy cannot ban it.

As of now, the meat is not allowed to be sold in the EU. However, companies in the US have been raising money for research into the new science.

Italy bans lab-grown 'frankenstein' meat citing health concerns and need to safeguard livestock industry

In a tragic turn of events, Indi Gregory, an eight-month-old British girl at the centre of a legal battle over her treatment, passed away within 24 hours of specialists withdrawing life support.&nbsp;

This happened, despite her being granted an Italian citizenship to facilitate her treatment abroad.

<h2>A desperate bid for treatment abroad&nbsp;</h2>

Indi was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, a genetic condition that made it hard for her to breathe and also impaired cells in her body from producing energy.&nbsp;

The condition has no cure, due to which a UK court ruled that medics can lawfully limit Indi's treatment.

Her parents, Claire Staniforth and Dean Gregory, however, had sought to transfer her to the Vatican-owned Bambino Gesu hospital in Italy.

The hope was to explore treatment options for mitochondrial disease. However, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) and multiple courts consistently ruled against the transfer, arguing it wasn't in the child's best interests.

<h2>Courts reject parental pleas</h2>

Even the parents' plea to have Indi's life support removed at home instead of a hospital or hospice was rejected by the Court of Appeal on Friday.&nbsp;

In a statement, as reported by AFP, her parents expressed anger and heartbreak and said: "The NHS and the courts not only took away her chance to live a longer life, but they also took away Indi's dignity to pass away in the family home where she belonged."&nbsp;

"They did succeed in taking Indi's body and dignity, but they can never take her soul," said Gregory.

<h2>International support and intervention</h2>

Last week, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni granted Indi Italian citizenship, hoping to facilitate her treatment in Italy.&nbsp;Pope Francis too expressed his support, and said that he "prays for them and for her".

However, British courts deemed the intervention from Rome as "wholly misconceived," and blocked her transfer to Italy.

Expressing her grief at Indi's passing, Meloni posted on X, "We did everything we could, everything possible. Unfortunately, it was not enough. Bon voyage, little Indi."

In a tragic turn of events, Indi Gregory, an eight-month-old British girl at the centre of a legal battle over her treatment, passed away within 24 hours of specialists withdrawing life support. This happened, despite her being granted an Italian citizenship to facilitate her treatment abroad. A desperate bid for treatment abroad Indi was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, a genetic condition that made it hard for her to breathe and also impaired cells in her body from producing energy. The condition has no cure, due to which a UK court ruled that medics can lawfully limit Indi's treatment. Also read | Feeling of 'rich' getting elusive, survey finds 92% millionaires consider themselves 'middle class' Her parents, Claire Staniforth and Dean Gregory, however, had sought to transfer her to the Vatican-owned Bambino Gesu hospital in Italy. The hope was to explore treatment options for mitochondrial disease. However, the UK's National Health Service (NHS) and multiple courts consistently ruled against the transfer, arguing it wasn't in the child's best interests. Courts reject parental pleas Even the parents' plea to have Indi's life support removed at home instead of a hospital or hospice was rejected by the Court of Appeal on Friday. In a statement, as reported by AFP, her parents expressed anger and heartbreak and said: "The NHS and the courts not only took away her chance to live a longer life, but they also took away Indi's dignity to pass away in the family home where she belonged." International support and intervention Last week, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni granted Indi Italian citizenship, hoping to facilitate her treatment in Italy. Pope Francis too expressed his support, and said that he "prays for them and for her". However, British courts deemed the intervention from Rome as "wholly misconceived," and blocked her transfer to Italy. Expressing her grief at Indi's passing, Meloni posted on X, "We did everything we could, everything possible. Unfortunately, it was not enough. Bon voyage, little Indi." 39-year-old Aine Davis is allegedly a member of ISIS' Beatles group — however, he had previously denied&nbsp;any connection to the group. He was arrested in Turkey in 2015 and sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in 2017 for IS membership.&nbsp;

Initially pleading not guilty in March, Davis changed his plea last month, admitting to possessing a firearm and two charges of funding terrorism.&nbsp;

He will now serve six years for the firearms offence and two years for terrorism funding. The terms as per AFP will run consecutively.&nbsp;

Announcing the sentence, judge Mark Lucraft at the Old Bailey court said, "It is clear you have been with fighters in Syria and that you were not there for lawful purposes." The judge noted that there were images from 2013 of Davis with firearms.

In a significant setback for former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the name of Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, has been added to the country's 'Exit Control List' (ECL) — a list of people&nbsp;prohibited from leaving Pakistan.&nbsp;

As per ARY News, this step was taken by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) under its investigation of a $232 million (or £190 million) scandal.&nbsp;

This comes&nbsp;as&nbsp;the Islamabad Accountability Court on Monday issued arrest warrants for&nbsp;Imran Khan in the Toshakhana and the Al-Qadir Trust cases.

<h2>NAB's investigation and Bushra Bibi's potential arrest</h2>

The NAB, as per a CNN-News18 report citing sources, reportedly possesses crucial evidence against Bibi, and if proven, it could lead to her arrest.&nbsp;

Earlier, the publication reported that there was a likelihood of her arrest based on emerging evidence that may elevate her status from a witness to an accused party in the case.&nbsp;

The investigation is expected to conclude soon, and the NAB is anticipated to file a reference charge sheet in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case.

As per ARY News, Bushra Bibi appeared before NAB investigators, where she was handed a questionnaire seeking her response to 11 queries.

Her advocate Naeem Haider Panjutha told the media that the former Pakistani first lady had already secured bail till November 15 in the case. He also disclosed that they were expecting her arrest today.&nbsp;

"Imran Khan and his family are always ready to face the law. Bushra Bibi was a trustee in the Al-Qadir Trust University and the former premier did not get any benefit from the property owned by a trust. There is no account of Bushra Bibi, and she did not hold any public office during the PTI government," said Panjutha.&nbsp;

<h2>Al-Qadir trust corruption case: Background</h2>

The Al-Qadir Trust corruption case revolves around allegations that Imran Khan and Bibi received substantial financial gains and land from a real estate firm for a settlement between the PTI administration and a real estate mogul. A whopping £190 million (or $232 million)&nbsp;was repatriated by the UK national exchequer during PTI's previous government.&nbsp;

The prosecution alleges that the funds from these activities were transferred to Bibi's extended family, with allegations of substantial amounts being stashed in multiple accounts across Pakistan and Middle East banks.

Indian capital New Delhi, which only just got&nbsp;relief from toxic air with overnight rains on Friday, is once again facing a toxic haze.

On Sunday, during Diwali, the annual Hindu festival of light, the city's residents defied a ban on firecrackers.&nbsp;

<h2>Firecrackers and AQI</h2>

Despite yearly bans imposed by government authorities or the Supreme Court, enforcement of bans on firecrackers remains a challenge.

Before the festivities began, the city's AQI as per SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research) averaged at 197, with many areas recording values as low as 150.

However, later in the day, smoke plumes filled the sky as revellers set off firecrackers, contributing to poor air quality. The Air Quality Index (AQI) as per Reuters, across all monitoring stations in the capital, averaged 219 on a scale of 500, indicating conditions harmful to prolonged exposure.&nbsp;

The concentration of "PM2.5" particulate matter in the air was recorded at 20 times higher value than the World Health Organization's recommended maximum.

<h2>Cities with the worst AQI</h2>

As per the Reuters report citing the Swiss group IQ Air, globally, Kolkata ranked as the city with the worst air pollution, while Delhi secured the fifth spot.&nbsp;

Doctors anticipate a further decline in air quality on Monday, which they warn can cause discomfort and respiratory issues.

Almost 50,000 people have been displaced by fighting in northern Myanmar after an alliance of ethnic armed groups launched an offensive against the military two weeks ago, the United Nations said Friday.&nbsp;

Fighting has raged for two weeks across northern Shan state near the Chinese border, in what analysts say poses the biggest military challenge to the junta since it seized power in 2021.

The Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), Ta'ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) and Arakan Army (AA) say they have seized dozens of military outposts and blocked vital trade routes to China.

"As of 9 November, almost 50,000 people in northern Shan were forced into displacement," the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said in an update.

Outside Shan state's Lashio township -- home to the military's northeastern command -- internet and phone services were disrupted, hindering humanitarian responses to the fighting, UNOCHA said.

Restrictions on transport and availability of cash were hindering efforts by local humanitarian groups to give out aid, it said.&nbsp;

A further 40,000 people have been displaced by clashes between the military and its opponents in the neighbouring Sagaing region and Kachin state since early November, UNOCHA said.&nbsp;

The military has made little comment on the surprise offensive, but earlier this week the junta-appointed president warned the country could end up "split into various parts" if the military was unable to "manage" the fighting.

The remoteness of the rugged, jungle-clad region -- home to pipelines that supply oil and gas to China -- and patchy communications make it difficult to verify casualty numbers.&nbsp;

Beijing, a major junta ally and arms supplier, on Tuesday confirmed there had been Chinese casualties as a result of the clashes in Myanmar.

A foreign ministry spokesperson did not say whether the Chinese were killed or wounded, nor where precisely the incident had taken place.&nbsp;

<h2>Communications blackout</h2>

Myanmar's borderlands are home to more than a dozen ethnic armed groups, some of which have fought the military for decades over autonomy and control of lucrative resources.

Some have trained and equipped newer "People's Defence Forces" (PDF) that have sprung up since the coup to fight the military's bloody crackdown on dissent.

Earlier this week, several PDF groups claimed to have seized the town of Kawlin in Sagaing region, home to mostly ethnic-majority Bamar and a traditional recruiting ground for the military.

AFP was unable to reach residents in the area, where internet and phone lines are largely cut.

Sagaing, which borders Shan and Kachin states, has become a hotspot of resistance to junta rule.

Dozens of PDF groups are active across Sagaing, where the military is accused of burning villages and massacring inhabitants.&nbsp;

Also read | Myanmar: Armed rebellion puts country at risk of breaking apart, says junta-backed president Outside Shan state's Lashio township -- home to the military's northeastern command -- internet and phone services were disrupted, hindering humanitarian responses to the fighting, UNOCHA said. Restrictions on transport and availability of cash were hindering efforts by local humanitarian groups to give out aid, it said. A further 40,000 people have been displaced by clashes between the military and its opponents in the neighbouring Sagaing region and Kachin state since early November, UNOCHA said. The military has made little comment on the surprise offensive, but earlier this week the junta-appointed president warned the country could end up "split into various parts" if the military was unable to "manage" the fighting. The remoteness of the rugged, jungle-clad region -- home to pipelines that supply oil and gas to China -- and patchy communications make it difficult to verify casualty numbers. Beijing, a major junta ally and arms supplier, on Tuesday confirmed there had been Chinese casualties as a result of the clashes in Myanmar. A foreign ministry spokesperson did not say whether the Chinese were killed or wounded, nor where precisely the incident had taken place. Communications blackout Myanmar's borderlands are home to more than a dozen ethnic armed groups, some of which have fought the military for decades over autonomy and control of lucrative resources. Dozens of PDF groups are active across Sagaing, where the military is accused of burning villages and massacring inhabitants.

Indian capital New Delhi finally got a breather on Friday, as overnight rains cleared some of the toxic air that had been plaguing the city for days.

Delhi, till Thursday (Nov 9) was the most polluted city in the world. Early on Friday, rains brought a welcome respite, and the city saw its air quality index (AQI) improve. AQI levels fell to 127 from&nbsp;earlier hazardous levels of 400-500.&nbsp;

<h2>Rains to continue?</h2>

As per Reuters, the Indian weather department has predicted that intermittent natural rains will sprinkle over the city and adjoining areas till early noon on Friday. The weather agency has also predicted light showers for the adjoining states of Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan.

<h2>Indian capital's toxic air</h2>

During the past week, Delhi consistently recorded "hazardous" 400–500 levels of AQI, according to the Swiss group IQAir. After the rains somewhat cleared the air on Friday morning, New Delhi slipped to become the 10th most polluted&nbsp;city in the world. Meanwhile, India's Kolkata topped the global chart with an AQI of 303.

For about a week, the city topped the most polluted cities index and as worries of health problems were exacerbated, schools were shut, with an early winter break of nine days, from November 9 to 18, announced.

Owing to the health hazard, the Delhi government had also invoked Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a set of anti-pollution guidelines.&nbsp;

NASA's Curiosity Rover has clocked a historic milestone by spending 4,000 Martian days exploring the red planet.

The car-sized rover reached Mars on 6 August 2012, and has been on the barren planet ever since, "busy conducting exciting science".

<h2>'Staying strong'</h2>

Celebrating the 11-year-long journey, NASA on its website wrote: "The mission team is making sure the robotic scientist, now in its fourth extended mission, is staying strong, despite wear and tear from its 11-year journey."

The rover, which at the time of its launch was the largest and the most advanced rover ever sent to Mars, aimed to determine if the alien planet was ever able to support microbial life.

<h2>Curiosity Rover's achievements</h2>

The rover's samples have helped scientists establish that the planet in ancient times had a huge network of rivers flowing with life-giving water.

Just last month, this exciting find was published by researchers in the journal 'Geophysical Research Letters'.

"We're finding evidence that Mars was likely a planet of rivers," said the research's lead author, Benjamin Cardenas, a geoscientist at Penn State University, at the time.

Slowly ascending the 3-mile-tall (5-kilometer-tall) Mount Sharp, Curiosity has helped us know a lot about Mars. Mount Sharp, the tall geological structure, as per NASA, is composed of many layers that formed during different parts of Martian history.

Recently, the resilient rover collected a sample from its target, nicknamed 'Sequoia'. This sample will help "reveal more about how the climate and habitability of Mars evolved as this region became enriched in sulfates – minerals that likely formed in salty water that was evaporating as Mars first began drying up billions of years ago".

Eventually, the planet's water disappeared. Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity’s project scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, said: "The types of sulfate and carbonate minerals that Curiosity’s instruments have identified in the last year help us understand what Mars was like so long ago. We've been anticipating these results for decades, and now Sequoia will tell us even more."

"Curiosity remains strong," says NASA.

During its 4,000-plus day or 11-year-long journey, the rover has driven almost 20 miles (32 kilometres) through Mars' "punishingly cold environment bathed in dust and radiation".&nbsp;

The Joe Biden administration has warned schools and colleges in the United States that the nation is witnessing an "alarming rise" in antisemitism and Islamophobia. The authorities have urged educational institutions to take immediate action against the rising threats and harassment.

In a letter on Tuesday (Nov 7), the US Education Department said that in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war, there was a "renewed urgency" to fight discrimination against students.

"Antisemitism, Islamophobia and all other forms of hatred go against everything we stand for as a nation," said Education Secretary Miguel Cardona in a statement.

However, hate crimes, unfortunately, are nothing new in the United States.&nbsp;

In the wake of history-changing events like the 9/11 terror attack, the Covid pandemic and now the Israel-Hamas war, the 'land of opportunity' as it was once called becomes the hot bed for Xenophobia — the fear or dislike of anything which is perceived as being foreign or strange.

In the wake of the ongoing war in the Middle East, the US has seen an "alarming rise" in cases of antisemitism and Islamophobia, as per the Biden administration.

In a recent statement released on the 25th Anniversary of the International Religious Freedom Act, President Joe Biden said: "Here at home, we are facing a rising tide of antisemitism, Islamophobia, and other forms of discrimination that are fuelling violence and hate across our country."

However, the US President said that "in the wake of Hamas' brutal terrorist assault against Israel," they are "working with community partners to identify, prevent, and disrupt any threats that could harm the Jewish, Muslim, Arab American, Palestinian American, or any other communities."

After Hamas militants launched their attack on October 7, incidents of hate crimes started cropping up very rapidly.

One case that left the world shocked involved a six-year-old child, who became the victim of a senseless hate crime borne out of fear.

The motive of the crime? Hatred.

The assailant, Wadea's landlord, 71-year-old Joseph M Czuba reportedly entered the little boy's family home yelling: "You Muslims must die!".

In the attack, the child's 32-year-old mother also suffered several stabbing wounds and had to be hospitalised.

Similarly, there have been reports of several disturbing spillovers and prejudices against Muslims and Jews. This includes reports of university students beating up their classmates, tearing down posters of Israeli children taken hostage, and more.

Are these once in a blue moon kinds of incidents?

Unfortunately, no. Modern history has already been witness to two such major episodes, where a particular race or religion saw widespread hatred: the Covid pandemic and the 9/11 attacks.

In 2020, the world came face to face with a dangerous common enemy: the coronavirus.&nbsp;

During the almost two years when the pandemic was at its peak, in the US, as per the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), crimes against the Asian American community saw a significant rise.

Between 2019 and 2020, there was a 77 per cent increase in hate crimes against Asian people living in the US.

Furthermore, during the period from March 2020 to June 2021, more than 9,000 anti-Asian hate incidents were reported, as per advocacy group Stop AAPI Hate Center. This included verbal harassment, including being called things like the "Chinese Coronavirus".&nbsp;

As per a Health Affairs report, these numbers are not a just reflection of the incidents as hate crimes frequently go unreported. A 2021 poll by Axios/Ipsos, called the 'Hard Truth Civil Rights &amp; Social Justice poll' found that 82 per cent of Asian Americans agreed that as a group they've faced discrimination because of the coronavirus pandemic. More than 57 per cent said they often or sometimes feel unsafe in public.

<h2>Muslims, Arabs and Islamophobia</h2>

After the horrific 9/11 attack in the US, there was a hate crime backlash that targeted&nbsp;people of Arab and Muslim origins. Even Sikhs, South Asians and those perceived to belong to be Arab or Muslim also faced the adverse response.

These incidents were marked by ferocity and included murder, physical assaults, arson, vandalism of places of worship and other property damage, death threats and public harassment.&nbsp;

Andrad&nbsp;claimed that he reacted the "right way" in response to the perceived threat.&nbsp;He reportedly also told the police that Varun "was going to assassinate him" and that the attack was in defence.

The police reported that "Andrad&nbsp;then described (Varun) as a threat to him, so he 'just reacted'."

However, when police talked to the gym 'Planet Fitness' staff they "indicated that (the victim) was a regular gym member and generally kept to himself, was quiet and reserved, nothing indicating that he was 'creepy'."

In his statement to the police, the assailant said that Varun, the victim, remained seated throughout the incident and only made physical contact to push him (the attacker) away after he had initiated the attack.

During a Congress hearing in Mexico on Tuesday, researchers declared that the previously displayed three-fingered Peruvian mummies were authentic. However, they cautiously steered away from certifying the remains' extraterrestrial origins.

<h2>Alien mummies</h2>

Previously, on September 13, journalist and UFO enthusiast Jaime Maussan presented the specimens at a congressional event on UFOs or FANIs in Spanish.

At the time, Maussan said that the bodies believed to have been found near the mysterious ancient Nazca lines in Peru were not related to life on Earth.

During Tuesday's session, as per Reuters, the UFO enthusiast returned to underscore the genuine nature of the bodies. He was backed by a group of medical experts who said that the mummies were of once-living organisms.

Although he stressed on the legitimacy of the specimens, Maussan didn't rule out the possibility of them being evidence of life beyond Earth.

Sparking further speculation during the session, he said: "None of the scientists say [the study results] prove that they are extraterrestrials, but I go further".&nbsp;

<h2>They're real: Anthropologist</h2>

Talking to Reuters, Anthropologist Roger Zuniga of San Luis Gonzaga National University in Ica, Peru, supported the findings, and said "they're real".

Emphasising that the beings "absolutely no human intervention in the physical and biological formation," he said he didn't know the origin of their potentially extraterrestrial lineage.

Zuniga, along with 11 university researchers, has also signed a letter attesting to the realness of the mummies. However, it also made clear that they were not implying that they were "extraterrestrial".

Despite this, some scepticism remains. Previously, Maussan's presentation was dismissed by experts as a stunt. At the time, many cited studies on similar specimens that turned out to be a concoction of animal and human bones.

At the session, Congressman Sergio Gutierrez advocated for greater transparency regarding UFO-related information, proposing reforms to Mexico's laws for public disclosure.&nbsp;

Reuters reports that the hearing also delved into more speculative territory. AT one point, Argentine surgeon Celestino Adolfo Piotto suggested the mummies might be an evolved form of modern humans, dubbing them "our descendants". A touch of colour was added by Mexican rapper Claudio Yarto, who claimed to have witnessed UFOs.

It is popularly said that "anything a man can do, a woman can do it, even better".&nbsp;As per a new study, this also holds true for guzzling alcohol.

A study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has found that women in Britain top the list of the world's biggest female binge drinkers.

<h2>Alcohol consumption around the world</h2>

The OECD report compared alcohol consumption across 33 countries and found that among women binge drinkers, the UK's female population tops the chart. As per the report, around 26 per cent of women go out binge drinking at least once a month.

Men are ahead, with 45 per cent binge-drinking at least once a month. However, Romanian men topped the charts, with around 57 per cent doing so.

Combined, the UK ranked third for binge drinking, behind Romania and Luxembourg.

Globally, across the OECD countries, on average 26 per cent of men reported heavy episodic drinking at least once a month compared to just 12 per cent of women.

<h2>Alcohol - an avoidable death</h2>

The OECD report states that alcohol use is the "leading cause of death and disability worldwide, particularly among those of working age."

Talking to the Guardian, Dr Richard Piper, chief executive of Alcohol Change UK, said: "Alcohol causes too much harm here in the UK. But this is totally avoidable."

As per the OECD, alcohol intake puts consumers at risk of heart diseases, strokes, liver cirrhosis, certain types of cancers and more. Additionally, it contributes to accidents like car crashes, violence, homicides, suicides and mental health disorders.&nbsp;

"There is an overwhelming need for the government to introduce measures that we know will reduce alcohol harm and save lives such as proper controls on alcohol marketing, introducing minimum unit pricing in England like we already have in Scotland and Wales, and clearer alcohol labelling," says Dr Piper.

Globally, in 2021, an average of 2.4 per cent of health expenditure was spent on dealing with the harm caused by alcohol consumption. However, in some countries, the figure reaches as high as 4 per cent.

Nathan Woodyard, a Colorado police officer accused of killing Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man has been acquitted of all charges by a Colorado court. McClain died after being put in a chokehold and the administration of a powerful sedative.

Following the verdict, the victim's mother said she no longer has faith in the justice system.

<h2>The court verdict</h2>

As per CNN, the Aurora police officer was found guilty on all charges — reckless manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, by a Colorado jury.

Talking to KUSA on Monday, Sheneen McClain, Elijah's mother, expressed her disappointment in the justice system and said the verdict "lets us down, not just people of colour, it lets down everybody."&nbsp;

"They don't do the right thing, they always do the bare minimum," she said, adding "It's just unfortunate that the people that stopped my son, brutalised my son, tortured my son, get away with murder, and their passing on what they did to the medical professionals that still were supposed to do their job."

"Nobody did. So it's just unfortunate that they are placing the blame and passing the buck."

<h2>What happened in 2019?</h2>

Woodyard, as per an NBC News report, was the first officer to confront the victim McClain.

At the time of the incident, McClain was walking home from a convenience store in the Denver suburb of Aurora.&nbsp;

The police officer was responding to a 911 call by a 17-year-old caller who had reported that the black man — who was wearing a ski mask and was listening to music, and dancing as he walked — as suspicious.

Prosecutors allege that Woodyard tackled McClain within eight seconds of exiting the patrol car — without introducing himself or explaining the reason for stopping him. They contend that officers used excessive force against the victim, putting him in carotid holds.

"Elijah McClain was walking home, he was dancing. As he told the defendant, he was stopping the music to listen," said Colorado Assistant Attorney General Jason Slothouber.&nbsp;

"There was no need for this escalation of violence," he emphasised.

Woodyard's neck hold as per NBC rendered McCain temporarily unconscious. Prosecutors also allege that McCain was injected with a fatal overdose of ketamine by paramedics. Later, the 23-year-old threw up in his mask and repeatedly said "I can't breathe" but the officers failed to check his vital signs. He suffered a cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital, where he was declared brain-dead. He died three days.

CNN reports that Dr Roger Mitchell Jr., a forensic pathologist who reviewed the victim's autopsy, during the trial testified that McClain's cause of death was "complications following acute ketamine administration during violent subdual and restraint by law enforcement, emergency response personnel."&nbsp;

He also testified that there was a "direct causal link" between the officers' actions and Elijah's death.

Previously in September, two other officers - Randy Roedema and Jason Rosenblatt were tried jointly. Rosenblatt was also acquitted of all charges, while Roedema was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault. He is due to be sentenced in January. &nbsp;

Morning brief: IDF kills key Hamas commander, Trump fights with judge during civil fraud trial, and more

Mike Johnson, a staunch conservative and vocal Christian who was elected as United States House of Representatives speaker last month, finds himself in a soup. An old video of him accepting the use of an app marketed as a tool to help people 'quit porn' has resurfaced on the internet.

In a year-old video clip, Johnson can be seen discussing his and his son's utilisation of Covenant Eyes, an app designed to track and monitor users' online activity across phones and computers.&nbsp;

<h2>17-year-old 'accountability partner'</h2>

In the video, which was reportedly recorded at a "War on Technology" event held by Cypress Baptist church in Louisiana in October 2022, Johnson said: "Covenant Eyes is the software that we’ve been using a long time in our household."

He goes on to describe how the 'subscription-based' app tracks an individual's data and sends an alert to their "accountability partner" whenever an "objectionable" website is accessed.

Johnson goes on to reveal that his 'accountability partner' was his 17-year-old son Jack, who he boasts has a "clean slate".

The pair, he said, gets a report on one another's internet use once a week, and that any objectionable material sends an immediate notification.

<h2>Does Johnson have a porn addiction?</h2>

Despite Johnson's endorsement of the app, there is no indication that he struggles with a pornography addiction.&nbsp;

Roman actress Sibilla Barbieri has ended her life in Switzerland. The 58-year-old actor and director last week chose assisted suicide across the border&nbsp;after authorities denied her request in her home country, Italy.

<h2>Why was Sibilla Barbieri seeking assisted suicide?</h2>

As per Vanity Fair Italy, the actress was suffering from terminal cancer for 10 years. Barbieri was completely dependent on oxygen therapy and pain medications, which, if interrupted, would have led to a painful death.

Given the severity of her condition, she had requested assisted suicide back in July, but her application was rejected.

In mid-September, Barbieri's health company replied to her request, stating that the medical team had considered that the woman lacked the requirement of dependence on life-sustaining treatment.

Talking to the press, Filomena Gallo, the actress' lawyer, revealed that Barbieri was told that her "current conditions are not consistent with intolerable physical suffering".

The healthcare provider also said that her condition did not fulfil conditions established by the Constitutional Court in 2019 for such cases.

<h2>How the suffering woman chose to end her life</h2>

Denied the request, Barbieri chose to end her suffering in a foreign land. She was accompanied to Switzerland by her son and Marco Perduca, of the Luca Coscioni Association, which works for human rights and civil liberties.

In a video&nbsp;statement addressed to 'all politicians' posted 19 hours ago by&nbsp;Luca Coscioni, Barbieri alleged of, "very serious discrimination between cancer patients and those who also find themselves in other non-terminal conditions."

"For this reason, I freely decided to get help by going to Switzerland because I have the necessary 10 thousand euros and I can still go physically."&nbsp;

"But all the other people condemned to die from an illness that they can't because they don't have the means, because they are alone, or they don't have the information, how do they do it? This is another serious discrimination which the State must remedy," she added.

<h2>Italy's assisted suicide law</h2>

In Italy, active euthanasia is a crime and a punishable offence under Article 579 (Murder of a consenting person) or Article 580 (Instigation or aid to suicide) of the penal code.&nbsp;

However, terminally ill patients can request assisted suicide, i.e. indirect help of a doctor to die. This was introduced in 2019 after a landmark judgement involving Fabiano Antoniani aka DJ Fabo, who, after a major road accident, was left tetraplegic — unable to voluntarily move the upper and lower parts of the body.&nbsp;

Marco Cappato, former member of the European Parliament, assisted DJ Fabo in availing&nbsp;medically assisted suicide, by driving him to a Swiss clinic. Afterwards, Cappato was put on trial, but the Italian Constitutional Court urged the Parliament to decriminalise assisted suicide and the former MP was acquitted.

So far, with the support of the Luca Coscioni Association, five Italian citizens have received a green light for assisted dying.

Denied relief in Italy, Roman actress opts for assisted suicide in Switzerland

You've heard of the glass ceiling, but do you know about the "glass cliff"? A new study has found that women may have been set up to fail, even in top-most roles like CEOs or heads of companies.

An analysis of companies listed in 12 stock exchanges globally found that since 2018, women have had an average of 5.2 years as chief executives, while men lasted an average of 8.1 years.

<h2>The findings</h2>

The analysis was conducted by Russell Reynolds, an executive search and leadership firm. It found that between men and women, there is a huge tenure gap.

Laura Sanderson, the UK head of Russell Reynolds, said that the tenure gap could partly be explained because some men have been in the chief executive chair for decades. One, she said, has been in the post for 39 years.

"While the sample size is too small to be significant, we also need to consider whether the data may support the glass cliff theory,"&nbsp;she said, as quoted by The Guardian.

<h2>What is the glass cliff theory?</h2>

The glass cliff theory poses that women are more likely to be appointed as leaders when an organisation or company is in a time of crisis. This is often so that the female executives' position is seen as more precarious than their male counterparts.

Previously, in 2005, research by Researchers at the University of Exeter found that women are more likely to be appointed as board members after a company's share price had performed badly.&nbsp;

Michelle Ryan, director of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at the Australian National University in Canberra, who is one of the two researchers behind the 2005 research, said that Reynold's analysis was "robust and added to the work in this area".

"If women are more likely to take on leadership roles in times of crisis, then it follows that their time in office is likely to be stressful, more heavily scrutinised and shorter in tenure," she remarked.

She added that "this reduced tenure could be for a number of reasons – because there is often higher turnover in times of crisis, because they are judged as not performing well, even though poor performance was in train before their appointment, or because when things start to turn around, men come back into leadership roles."
