Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson on Sunday (Nov 5) visited Jerusalem, and&nbsp;met with British soldiers enlisted in the Israeli Army. The British leader, who was accompanied by former Australian PM Scott Morrison, also visited Kibbutz Kfar Aza, which was devastated in the terror attack by Hamas militants on October 7.

<h2>Johnson talks to troops</h2>

As per Reuters news agency, the British leader, during his conversation with the soldiers, expressed his support for the troops and said he disagreed with those trying to make a moral equivalence between what the Israeli soldiers are doing and what the Hamas militants are doing.

Johnson, accompanied by former Australian PM Morrison, also paid a visit to Kibbutz Kfar Aza, the area which became the scene of devastation as Hamas militants launched their October 7 attack called Operation Al-Aqsa Floodgate.

The two leaders, along with Israeli soldiers and officials, also walked into some houses that were burned during the October 7 attacks.

Johnson, as reported by Reuters, said that he believed that the attacks, which killed over 1,400 Israelis, might suggest that the memory of the Holocaust is “starting to fade” but stressed that antisemitism "simply cannot be tolerated".

Later, talking to the press, Johnson said he believed that the attacks, which killed over 1,400 Israelis, might suggest that the memory of the Holocaust is "starting to fade". He also stressed that antisemitism "simply cannot be tolerated".

"There's been no single attack like this on the Jewish people since the Second World War, and that's a matter of record," said Johnson.

"I think that maybe because across the world, the memory and the lesson of that appalling crime, where six million died, the memory may be starting to fade. And it may be that what we're really seeing right now, in some of these marches and these demos, and the unthinking way people are talking about this issue, what we're starting to see perhaps, I hope this really isn't the case, we're seeing more and more evidence of antisemitism."

"In the end, that is something that simply cannot be tolerated, neither in my country nor anywhere else," he emphasised.

In the attack, as per Israeli estimates, around 1,400 people were killed, while more than 230 were taken hostage by the militants. These kidnapped individuals, which involve foreign nationals and around 30 children, remain with the Hamas, amid calls for their release. As of Sunday, more than 9,770 Palestinians have been killed in the war, said Gaza health officials.

Shipping giant Maersk is all set to cut at least 10,000 jobs in the face of overcapacity, rising costs and weaker prices. The decision comes after the company reported a steep drop in profit and revenue in the July-september quarter.

Sri Lanka men's cricket team cancelled their training session in Delhi on Saturday (Nov 4) ahead of their World Cup match against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The team followed advice from the doctors who said it was not healthy to practice outdoors due to the severe pollution&nbsp;currently engulfing the national capital, according to an ESPNCricinfo report.&nbsp;

The Sri Lankan team is scheduled to square up against subcontinent rivals Bangladesh on Monday (Nov 6) but the pollution in Delhi may prove a major hindrance in the match going ahead. The air quality index (AQI) for the capital has been consistently above 400 for the last few days and is expected to stay that way till Tuesday next week.&nbsp;

The Sri Lankan team's cancellation of&nbsp;its practice session comes a day after the Bangladesh cricket team also did the same.&nbsp;

"Due to worsening conditions, we didn't take the chance.&nbsp;We have two more training days. Some of us developed coughing, so there's a risk factor. We don't want to get sick," said Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud.&nbsp;

Notably, the Bangladesh team has another practice session scheduled at 6 pm on Saturday but given the pollution, it appears highly unlikely that it will go ahead.&nbsp;

"We don't know if things will improve, but we have training tomorrow. We want all the players to be fit for the important game coming up on November 6," added Mahmud.&nbsp;

According to reports, come the matchday, the officials will treat air pollution just as they would other weather condition. Meaning, the play could be called off if the conditions are not fit to play and players' health is under jeopardy.&nbsp;

<h2>What happens if the match is cancelled?</h2>

The Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh is the last match in Delhi in the ODI World Cup before the action shifts to knockouts. While Bangladesh have already been eliminated of the tournament, Sri Lanka remain on the precipice, especially after receiving a thumping by the Indian side earlier this week.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka were bundled out on a meagre total of 55 whilst chasing a 358-run target. Thus, if the match is cancelled in the extreme case, it won't do a whole lot of damage to either team's chances at the World Cup. However, with a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy on the line, both teams would hope for the play to go ahead.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

China has reportedly cleaned up hundreds of "illegal foreign-related" weather stations that were allegedly spying on the country.

This is the latest broad counter-espionage campaign undertaken by Chinese leader Xi Jinping's government&nbsp;amid intensifying geopolitical tensions with the United States.

<h2>A national risk</h2>

China's top spy agency, the Ministry of State Security, on Tuesday (Oct 31) said it had discovered 'illegal meteorological stations' with foreign links, reported CNN.

It said that these weather stations were sending real-time updates outside China to foreign governments.

This, as per South China Morning Post (SCMP), was labelled an infringement upon its data rules and poses national security risks by China.

However, the nation failed to specify which foreign governments were allegedly at the receiving end of this data.

These facilities were found in 20 provinces across China. To detect them, China investigated over 3,000 overseas-related meteorological stations.&nbsp;

On WeChat, China's alternative to WhatsApp, the spy agency, said, "Meteorological data constitutes an essential component of data security and resource security; it is closely linked to national, food and ecological security, climate change, along with public interests."

"The illegal collection and cross-border transmission of meteorological data pose a threat to our country's sovereignty, security and development interests," it added.

As per the state security ministry, some of these spy weather stations were located near China's military and defence units, while others were near its main grain producer and were monitoring, analysing the nation's crop growth and production.

<h2>Do unto others...</h2>

Just eight months back, the US Air Force announced that it had shot down a suspected spy balloon that was flying across North American airspace.

At the time, China said it was a civilian vessel being used for meteorological research.

The US at the time said that the spying attempt violated its sovereignty, and China labelled the western nation's response an overreaction.

This episode sent relations between the two nations plummeting to a new low and eventually halted top-level engagements for months.

<h2>Paranoid or vigilant?</h2>

This comes as, amid geopolitical tensions with the US, China grows wary of potential data leaks.&nbsp;

Recent months have seen China take stringent steps towards "proactively" defending itself against spies. 2023 also saw China introduce a new anti-espionage law legal basis over a wider range of data and digital activities.

Donald Trump is known for his antics, and is often in the news for making fun of his competitors and the people he dislikes.&nbsp;The former US president has often mocked his political rival and successor, the gaffe-prone Joe Biden, for his age, among other things.

However, a series of blunders made by the eccentric businessman himself&nbsp;raises the question: Is Trump questioning Biden's senility just another case of pot calling the kettle black?

<h2>An oops moment</h2>

Just last month, at a campaign stop for his presidential run, Trump was seen doing an exaggerated impersonation of Joe Biden, walking around the stage with a mocking expression of confusion.&nbsp;

"He’s always looking around, where do I go?" he said, questioning his rival's mental fitness for holding the US presidential office.

Weeks later, CNN reports, Trump himself was caught on the mic slipping, confusing facts.

Taking the stage in Sioux City, Iowa, the former president thanked supporters for coming out to Sioux City, South Dakota, instead of Iowa.

Iowa state senator's discrete attempts to correct his blunder didn't go unnoticed, either.

<h2>The Republican frontrunner</h2>

Biden has made his fair share of gaffes. These faux pas have been repeatedly used by Republicans to raise questions about the 80-year-old's ability to serve as commander-in-chief. Booing the Democrat, they push for their own frontrunner, who, by the way, is just three years younger at 77 years.

It seems like the Republican&nbsp;frontrunner is suffering from the same predicament as his Democrat rival: age.

A series of blunders made by Trump could be taken as evidence that Biden and him are in the same boat.

During a summit in Washington DC, Trump said Biden could "plunge the world into World War II", a war that ended 80 years ago.

Not only that, he also confused Biden with Obama, his former rival, and said he (Trump) beat Obama in recent polls. He also repeatedly mispronounced Hamas militant group's name as Hummus, the popular Middle Eastern dip — but at least he got the region right.

Trump's loss, someone else's gain

Trump's rivals have been quick to capitalise on his errors.

Last month, Trump's rival in the presidential nomination race Ron DeSantis remarked: "This is a different Donald Trump than 2015 and 2016 — lost the zip on his fastball."

"He is wedded to the teleprompter. He can't get off that teleprompter. Anytime he does, he says things like, 'don't vote.' He's telling people not to vote, like, we have all the votes,"&nbsp;DeSantis said while talking to reporters in New Hampshire.

What's more? DeSantis, the Florida governor, even launched a "Trump accident tracker" that is meant to highlight the former president's slip-ups, blunders and more to "remind the American people of the liability he (Trump) would be in the Oval Office".

So, how old is too old, 77 or 80 years?

Donald Trump Jr., son of former US president Donald Trump, on Wednesday, testified that he was not involved in preparing the documents at the centre of the damning civil fraud case his father and family face.

The documents in question were found fraudulent by a judge earlier in the trial that could potentially hobble Trump's business empire.

Donald Trump Jr. who is the first member of the Trump family to testify in this case, took the stand for about one and a half hours. During this, he said that during his father's presidential stint between 2017 and 2021, he and his brother Eric oversaw the Trump Organization.&nbsp;

However, he insisted that he was not involved in preparing the financial documents at the centre of the financial fraud case. Instead, he said he provided cash flow figures to company accountants.

"I wasn't involved in compiling this statement," said Trump Jr. "The accountants worked on it. That's what we paid them to do," he added.

"They could have asked me on any given day what a deal was worth," he said, adding: "I may not have known that it was going to be used in aggregate for the statements of financial condition."

On Wednesday, the court adjourned before the 45-year-old's testimony could be finished, so he will return to the stand on Thursday. In addition, the lawsuit seeks a permanent ban that could prohibit the defendants from running businesses in New York and a five-year commercial real estate ban against Trump and the Trump Organization.

In addition, the lawsuit seeks a permanent ban that could prohibit the defendants from running businesses in New York and a five-year commercial real estate ban against Trump and the Trump Organization. Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters who took part in the 2019-20 movement have been treated in an exceptionally harsh manner by the criminal justice system, reveals a new report.

The report by experts from Georgetown University's Center for Asian Law has uncovered the severe treatment, which was a marked departure from both local and global norms.

<h2>Intensified response to 2019 protests</h2>

Jun Chan, Eric Yan-ho Lai, and Thomas E Kellogg from Georgetown University's Center for Asian Law, according to The Guardian, have highlighted the "extreme stress" faced by the criminal justice system due to the significant increase in arrests, detentions, and charges following the anti-extradition bill protests in 2019.&nbsp;

As per the authors, "in nearly all respects" the response to the 2019 protests surpassed the punitive measures imposed in response to prior social movements, "particularly the 2014 umbrella movement".

<h2>Statistics and severity</h2>

Government statistics as of August 2022 indicate that over 10,000 individuals had been arrested in connection with the 2019 protests, with nearly 3,000 of them prosecuted.&nbsp;

The researchers examined more than 1,500 concluded cases until July 31, 2021, shedding light on the severity of the charges brought against the protesters.

<h2>Charges and convictions</h2>

Researchers found that protesters were charged with a variety of offences, including unlawful assembly, rioting, police obstruction, and police assault. Notably, the most common charge was unlawful assembly, an archaic colonial-era law that allows authorities to persecute peaceful protesters.

Furthermore, more than 80 per cent of convicted individuals received custodial sentences. In comparison, only 31 per cent received the sentence in relation to the Umbrella movement.

A particularly concerning trend, as per The Guardian report, was the disproportionately high rate of incarceration for young individuals, with over 130 defendants under 18 years of age. There was also "an extraordinarily high rate of incarceration for children" with more than 66 per cent of juvenile convictions resulting in custodial sentences.

<h2>A backlogged court system</h2>

The report also revealed the troubling trend of lengthy pre-trial detentions and a significant backlog in the court system, with the average waiting time for criminal trials expanding by 50 per cent to 287 days.

As per the researchers, "Such long wait times suggest that the court system is flailing under the weight of a massively increased caseload."

What does a genius look like? Unkept hair, and casual, casually thrown-on, no-nonsense clothes were the look "in vogue" as per popular culture. This is the standard allegedly adopted by Sam Bankman-Fried, FTX to keep up with his "tech genius" persona.

<h2>A deliberate anti-style</h2>

Recently, Sam Bankman Fried took the stand during his blockbuster crypto trial, and before that, the tech genius got a haircut.&nbsp;

This style change happened just in time for the prosecutors' cross-examination which, as per the Guardian, included questions like whether the famously unkempt hair was a part of his deliberate, anti-style "tech genius" persona.

During the high drama trial testimony, New York assistant US attorney Danielle Sassoon, during her pointed cross-examination, asked Bankman-Fried about his persona and his unkept boy genius look that was allegedly used to woo investors.&nbsp;

During her testimony, the FTX founder's ex-girlfriend and Alameda Research CEO Caroline Ellison had claimed that Bankman-Fried's signature unruly mane of hair was an 'act'.

<h2>Sartorial choices and biting questions</h2>

Sassoon asked Bankman-Fried if he would "agree that you know how to tell a good story?" Deflecting the question, he answered, "it depends".

The attorney then grilled him on his sartorial or tailoring choices, asking him if he believed that cutting his signature unkept hair would have had a negative value because, as he allegedly said, earlier "it's important for people to think I look crazy."

However, the tech genius denied this and said, "I don't think I said that in that way". In a previous testimony, he had clarified that the only reason he did not cut his hair was because he was busy and lazy and that it was not a strategic decision.

The questions then moved on to his dressing choices, with Sassoon asking him whether he recalled telling an investor that "a T-shirt and shorts" were part of his brand, to a request to wear a suit. Bankman-Fried said he did not remember such a comment.

Focusing on his presentation and branding, Sassoon moved the spotlight onto the former CEO's intelligence.&nbsp;

The tech genius' defence attorney had attempted to portray him as an overwhelmed young man who "made mistakes" while trying to build a fast-growing venture.

Bankman-Fried too said, "I made a number of small mistakes and a number of large mistakes." However, the former CEO stuck to his earlier plea of not guilty.

Ellison, along with two other former members of Bankman-Fried's inner circle, have pleaded guilty to fraud charges. They've also agreed to cooperate with the Manhattan US attorney general's office, reports Reuters.

However, Bankman-Fried has entered a not-guilty plea to two counts of fraud and five counts of conspiracy. He also contends that while he made mistakes running FTX, he never intended to steal funds.

Prosecutors allege that Bankman-Fried used customer funds to support Alameda, purchase real estate, and donate over $100 million to US political campaigns.&nbsp;

At least nineteen people were killed in the restive southern Philippines on Monday as millions turned out to vote for village leaders following months of deadly poll-related violence.

Security forces were on high alert across the country for the long-delayed nationwide vote for more than 336,000 council positions.

While villages are the lowest-level government unit, the council posts are hotly contested because they are used by political parties to cultivate grassroots networks and build a support base for local and general elections.

More than 300,000 police officers and soldiers were deployed to secure polling stations in over 42,000 villages.

In the capital Manila, voters waited in long lines to cast their ballots at schools being used as polling venues.

"This is important for the people... we need to be able to consult someone over our problems," said Rosemarie Garcia in the hardscrabble neighbourhood of Tondo.

"We need somebody who is easily approachable to his or her constituents."

Elections are a traditionally volatile time in the Philippines, which has lax gun laws and a violent political culture.

Commission on Elections chairman George Garcia said voting had been "generally peaceful" except for several incidents on the southern island of Mindanao.

Two people were killed and five others were wounded outside a polling station in Maguindanao del Norte province, police said.

The shootout happened during a confrontation between supporters of rival candidates for village captain, said Datu Odin Sinsuat municipality police chief Lieutenant-Colonel Esmail Madin.

In another incident on Mindanao, a woman was killed when a gunfight broke out after a van carrying a village captain and her supporters was stopped on a road by people backing her rival in Lanao del Norte province, the army said.

The husband of a village captain in Lanao del Sur province died after he was shot in the chest during a confrontation with his wife's rival, police said.

In 2009, before it was divided into two provinces, Maguindanao was the scene of the country's deadliest single incident of political violence on record.

Fifty-eight people were massacred as gunmen allegedly working for a local warlord attacked a group of people to stop a rival from filing his election candidacy.

<h2>'Very important' result&nbsp;</h2>

In the run-up to Monday's vote, there were 30 confirmed incidents of election-related violence, compared with 35 in 2018, the Philippine National Police said Sunday, without providing an updated breakdown for the number of dead and injured.

About one-third of the incidents happened in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Previous police data showed eight people were killed and seven injured in poll-related violence between August 28 and October 25.

More than 67 million people were registered to vote in the elections, which President Ferdinand Marcos described Monday as "very important" for higher-level politicians.

"What happens here in the barangay (village)... &nbsp;are going to have an effect on the results of the mid-term elections and subsequently at the national elections," Marcos said after casting his vote in his family's stronghold of Batac City in the northern province of Ilocos Norte.

"If other barangays tell you 'I will deliver 350 votes for you in my barangay', rest assured, you will get 350. That's why the result is very important."

Polling stations were due to close at 3:00 pm (0700 GMT), but voting was extended in some places.

Vote counting was underway and results would be announced late Monday, said Garcia.

Voters chose a village captain and seven councillors responsible for implementing national policies, resolving neighbourhood disputes and providing basic public services.

Village councils also enable politicians to "disseminate funds and other favours to secure votes", said Maria Ela Atienza, a political science professor at the University of the Philippines.

Village elections are supposed to be held every three years, but the last vote was in 2018.

Legendary former footballer Didier Drogba had to step up during the Ballon d'Or ceremony on Monday (Oct 30) evening when the French fans, attending the event, started booing Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez who received the Yashin Trophy. Drogba, who was hosting the event, shushed the disorderly fans and reminded them to show respect to Martinez for winning the trophy. "Let me tell you, French people, they think about it [the save] every day, as you can see. Was it the save of your life, do you see it every day in your mind?" Drogba asked Martinez as a video clip of the Argentine saving Randal Kolo Muani's 123rd-minute goal attempt in the World Cup final was played in the background. The French fans got incensed over the footage and started booing Martinez, forcing Drogba to intervene. The Chelsea striker addressed the crowd in French and told them to keep quiet and respect Martinez. As the clock ticks to the November 1st deadline set for undocumented migrants to leave Pakistan, more than 10,000 Afghans rushed to the borders on Tuesday.

Starting Wednesday, the Pakistani government will start arresting undocumented Afghans and taking them to new holding centres, where they will be processed before being forcibly made to return to Afghanistan.

<h2>Pakistan's announcement</h2>

On October 4th, Pakistan announced that starting Wednesday (Nov 1st) it will expel undocumented migrants who do not leave on their own.

There are already reports of harassment and extortion from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where the majority of Afghan migrants live. However, police as per AFP, said they are yet to begin arrests.

The expulsion threat as per reports came after suicide bombings this year, which the South Asian nation's government said involved Afghans. However, Pakistan did not provide any evidence for the allegation. Islamabad has also blamed Afghan citizens for smuggling and other militant attacks in the nation.

As per the Taliban's data, between Sept 23 to Oct 22, some 60,000 Afghans have returned from Pakistan.&nbsp;

Recent daily returnee figures to Afghanistan, as per a Reuters report quoting Taliban refugee ministry spokesman Abdul Mutaleb Haqqani, are three times higher than normal.

"Thousands of Afghan refugees are waiting for their turn in vehicles, lorries, and trucks, and the number continues to grow," said Irshad Mohmand, a senior government official at the Torkham border, while talking to AFP.

"More than 10,000 refugees have gathered since morning."

<h2>Harassment or not</h2>

Afghanistan's Taliban government, as per AFP, has said that Pakistan's policy amounts to "harassment".

However, in a statement, Pakistani Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said that the expulsion plan was compliant with international norms and principles.

"Our record of the last forty years in hosting millions of our Afghan brothers and sisters speaks for itself," said Baloch.

<h2>Leaving 'home'</h2>

Talking to Reuters, an undocumented Pakistan-born Afghan national who is married to a Pakistani woman said: "We'd live here our whole life if they didn't send us back."

Over four million Afghans have made Pakistan their home, and about 1.7 million of them, according to Islamabad, are undocumented. While many of them sought refuge in Pakistan after the 2021 Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, a large number have been present since the 1979 Soviet invasion.

Liquor Policy Case: Arvind Kejriwal summoned | India News

Along the west bank of the Nile River lies the Great Sphinx of Giza, a majestic symbol of ancient Egyptians, and a source of mystery.

The origins of the limestone statue of the mythical creature who has the head of a human and the body of a lion have for years remained a head-scratcher.&nbsp;

However, scientists have now suggested a theory that may explain how the creature known for posing riddles to travellers came to regally perch in the Giza desert.

<h2>The origins of Great Sphinx of Giza</h2>

Some decades ago, in 1981, Farouk El-Baz, a geologist writing in the Smithsonian Magazine, theorised that like the pyramids, the Egyptians didn't create the mighty Sphinx from scratch. Instead, he speculated that the desert winds had a hand in the formation of the overall contours of the Abū al-Hawl, or "Father of Terror."

Now, more than 40 years later, researchers from the New York University have tested El-Baz's theory and there actually might be some truth to it.&nbsp;

<h2>How they tested the theory</h2>

Using fluid dynamics, scientists from the New York University (NYU) created miniature, lion-like landforms from clay. They deduced that it is actually possible that ancient Egyptians were inspired by the shape of a rock and visualised the Sphinx as we know it.

Led by Leif Ristroph, the team from New York University was originally studying how water eroded clay when they were "struck" by a familiar shape.

"We were struck by the resemblance to a seated lion or a lion in repose. And I was reading about this and came across the idea that perhaps even the Great Sphinx was one of these natural formations that then got, obviously, a little facelift from the ancient Egyptians," said Ristroph, in a conversation with New Science. Their findings have been published in&nbsp;Physical Review Fluids.

While the way water erodes clay and how wind may erode rocks are different, Jani Radebaugh of the Birmingham Young University, Utah, said that the behaviour observed by the NYU team is a geological phenomenon called 'Yardang' that exists in deserts across the world. She says that these Yardangs also exist on Mars, where the lack of water has allowed erosion to create sphinx-like shapes.

Ristroph and his colleagues are now working on developing a mathematical description of the geological process that may have contributed to the Sphinx's origins.

Donald Trump and his three children will soon be called to court to testify in the businessman's ongoing New York civil fraud trial, said New York Attorney General Letitia James' attorneys.

This comes after speculation about whether Trump's children Donald Trump Jr, Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump, would be questioned on the stand.

<h2>When will they be called to stand?</h2>

On Friday, one of the attorneys for James, as quoted by CBS, said that the state will rest the trial which has already seen four weeks of testimonies, once Trump's children testify.

As per the attorney, Donald Trump Jr. will take the stand on November 1st,&nbsp;Eric Trump will testify on November 2nd, with November 3rd reserved for his further questioning.&nbsp;

Ivanka Trump's testimony, which was originally slated to happen on November 3rd, has now been pushed back. As per an AP report, Ivanka, on Friday (Oct 27th) had attempted to avoid testifying, but Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that she must appear.&nbsp;

As per CBS News, assuming this schedule holds, Donald Trump will be called to testify under oath on November 6 (Monday).

<h2>The case</h2>

Donald Trump has been accused of overstating his wealth for years on financial statements, which were given to banks, insurers and other entities to help secure deals and loans.&nbsp;

The Trumps and their company have already been found liable for fraud and&nbsp;the trial is proceeding on allegations relating to falsification of business records, insurance fraud and conspiracy.

The state via the case brought by Attorney General James is seeking at least $250 million in what it calls "ill-gotten gains," along with harsh penalties that limit Trump's business in New York.

However, Trump has denied all allegations and instead accuses James of pursuing the case for political gains.&nbsp;

Mars is a fascinating, exotic territory yet to be properly explored by humanity. While we have sent rovers to the red planet, humans are yet to set foot on the alien land.&nbsp;

Planned future missions to find water ice on the planet aim to rectify that. However, a question that remains to be answered is where exactly on the red planet should they land to do this? A recent map might help mission planners answer this question.

<h2>A treasure map to Mars' water ice</h2>

The Subsurface Water Ice Mapping (SWIM), a NASA-funded project, has released its fourth and the more recent map of the prospective locations of subsurface water ice on Mars. This, as per NASA officials, will help mission planners decide where exactly to send the first humans to Mars.

<h5>The blue areas on this map of Mars are regions where NASA missions have detected subsurface water ice (from the equator to 60 degrees north latitude). Scientists can use the map-part of the Subsurface Water Ice Mapping project to decide where the first astronauts to set foot on the Red Planet should land. (Image source:&nbsp;NASA/JPL-Caltech/Planetary Science&nbsp;Institute)</h5>

For this map, scientists used data from instruments abroad in the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. These instruments — Context Camera (CTX) and High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HIRISE) — provided high resolution imagery of the Martian terrain, reports Science Alert.

<h2>Why is this important?</h2>

To put it simply, "The map could help the agency decide where the first astronauts to the Red Planet should land. The more available water, the less missions will need to bring."

As per a statement on the NASA website, ice buried on Mars will be a vital source for humans on Mars, serving both as drinking water and a key ingredient for rocket fuel.

Furthermore, these prospective locations of buried ice could one day help us know more about the red planet. Astronauts or robots could drill ice cores, that could help uncover "the climate history of Mars and exploring potential habitats (past or present) for microbial life."

While locations with buried ice may be the best locations for landing humans on Mars, scientists don't want astronauts to go to locations that are too chilly. This is because cold will lead to the crew using up "precious energy" to stay warm.

"If you send humans to Mars, you want to get them as close to the equator as you can," said Sydney Do, SWIM's project manager, said in a statement. Hence, as per Sydney, an ideal spot would be a patch that has accessible ice but with as low a latitude as possible. Martian ice maps will help navigate this dilemma and decide on the apt location for human landing.

Where exactly on Mars should humans go? NASA scientists release a map

A San Diego-based aquarium and theme park has announced a 'once in a decade' event. For the first time in 13 years, SeaWorld San Diego celebrated the rare hatching of an emperor penguin chick, marking a significant event for the park.

<h2>'Exciting thing'</h2>

On Wednesday, SeaWorld announced that the emperor penguin chick came out of its eggshell with the help of the zoo staff on September 12.

In a video shared with the press, Justin Brackett, SeaWorld's birds curator, stressed the exceptional nature of this development&nbsp;and said: "This is the most exciting thing we'll do all year, potentially all decade."

<h2>Why is this so significant?</h2>

The emperor penguin is classified as a threatened species and is native to Antarctica. At SeaWorld, 17 of these penguins are kept in a controlled habitat that is maintained at a chilly 25 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 5 degrees Celsius).&nbsp;

While the zoo houses around 300 penguins from various species, the successful hatching of the emperor penguin held special significance for SeaWorld's staff, said supervisor of the birds, Melissa Ramsey, who was directly involved in the hatching process.

Unlike some other penguin species that lay multiple eggs annually, the female emperor only lays a single egg each year, clarified Ramsey during a telephone interview with Reuters.

The park disclosed that the egg was laid on July 7.

<h2>Emperor penguins</h2>

The largest among penguin species, the emperor penguin, scientifically known as Aptenodytes forsteri, can grow up to 3.7 feet (1.15 meters) in height and can weigh as much as 99 pounds (45 kilograms), according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The species' egg-laying habits differ from other species. Emperor penguins only lay one egg at a time. In most penguin species, both male and female penguins usually take turns incubating the egg. However, the female emperor generally returns to the sea to feed after laying the egg, leaving the male to tend to the egg for over two months without feeding.&nbsp;

<h2>The artificial hatching</h2>

The recent zoo hatching was also unique due to the fact that the mother penguin did not transfer the egg to the father for incubation.

Due to this, SeaWorld's staff assumed the responsibility. They noticed signs of movement and sound from within the egg on September 7. However, after 72 hours without any significant progress, the team intervened.&nbsp;

Ramsey revealed that&nbsp;they&nbsp;poked a small hole in the egg to help the penguin in its hatching process over the subsequent two days. It was later identified that a beak malformation in the chick had hindered its successful hatching.

SeaWorld has extended an invitation to the public to participate in naming the newly hatched penguin. People can choose from among three names: Pearl, Pandora, and Astrid. They can put in their votes on Instagram or via email till 11:59 pm on October 31.
