Dev Shah, a 14-year-old student from Florida, won the 2023 Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States on Thursday, June 1, 2023. The Indian-origin teenager correctly spelt the word "psammophile" and won a $50,000 cash prize at the 95th National Bee. Charlotte Walsh, also 14, from Arlington, Virginia, finished second, having incorrectly spelt&nbsp;"daviely" as "daevilick." Walsh won a cash prize of $25,000.

Dev, while collecting the prize with his family, said, "It's surreal... my legs are still shaking." His mother told that she is very proud of him.&nbsp;

Who is Dev Shah?

Dev is an eighth-grade student at Morgan Fitzgerald Middle School. His hobbies include reading, playing tennis, cello, and doing math.

This was Dev's&nbsp;third attempt in the competition. In 2019, he finished 51st and 76th in 2021.

In finals, he&nbsp;correctly spelt aegagrus, rommack, tolsester, and schistorrhachis. In the word meaning round, he picked the right meaning of chiromancy, identifying it as someone who tells fortunes using lines on the palm of the hand.

The New York Times cited Dev asking what's a psammophile, "Psammo meaning sand, Greek?" He continued, "Phile, meaning love, Greek?"

After instantly identifying the roots of his words, he asked for all the information just to be safe, and while smiling slightly in a way that sighed, he said that he was pretty sure that he had it.

Along with the $50,000 cash prize from EW Scripps CO, the bee's sponsor, Dev, other than monetary prizes, also got Encyclopaedia Britannica and Merriam-Webster. It is the official dictionary of the competition.&nbsp;

11 million people participated in the Spell Bee competition.

The organisers said a total of 11 million people entered the spelling competitions, but only 11 made it to the finals. The national spelling bee started in 1925.

The preliminary rounds were held on Tuesday, while the quarterfinals and semifinals took place on Wednesday, May 31.

Last year, Harini Logan, 14, from San Antonio, Texas, correctly spelt 22 words during a 90-second spell-off to bag the first prize.&nbsp;

The spell bee competition got cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, the US’ largest and longest-running educational programme, Spell Bee returned in 2021 but with a few changes.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;video above clearly shows&nbsp;that as both queens were hugging each other, Becker's husband came on to the stage, snatched&nbsp;the crown&nbsp;and smashed&nbsp;it hard to the floor. The furious man splintered the crown made of jewels and shouted that the judgment is unfair. The man yelled out inaudible profanities as he spent a few more seconds on the stage. &nbsp;After breaking the winner's crown, he tried to pull away his wife but the security invaded and stopped him. He was resisted, chased and taken backstage.&nbsp;

This instance shocks the audience present at the LGBTQ+ contest.&nbsp;

As quoted by The New York Times, Malone Haenish, the pageant's coordinator issued a statement on the incident condemning the behaviour of Becker's husband. She said, "He did not consider the result to be fair and caused all this inconvenience and damage." 
 
"We vehemently condemn the incident that occurred at the time of the crowning when the partner of Miss Cuiabá, who was classified in second place, invaded the stage and aggressively destroyed the crown," she added.

The authorities said that the pageant's legal team has been informed about the incident and will take action accordingly.&nbsp;

In a major win for the LGBTQIA+ community in Japan, a court has ruled that the nation's insistence on not allowing same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. The Tuesday ruling is seen by activists as a welcome step towards marriage equality in a nation where there exists no protection for same-sex unions.

Speaking to the press outside the court, the lead lawyer Yoko Mizutani said that the ruling has "rescued" them from the "hurt" of the last ruling on this issue.

<h2>Past rulings on same-sex marriages in Japan</h2>

To date, Japan has had four rulings on the issue. The recent ruling by the Nagoya District Court is the second ruling to find a ban on same-sex marriages unconstitutional. Previously, in March 2021, a district court in Sapporo, the capital city of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido in a similar ruling&nbsp;said that the ban was "unconstitutional".

However, in June 2022, the Osaka district court ruled that the ban was not unconstitutional. The court added that "from the perspective of individual dignity, it can be said that it is necessary to realise the benefits of same-sex couples being publicly recognised through official recognition."

Subsequently, in December of last year, a Tokyo court reiterated that while the ban was not "unconstitutional," the country's failure to legally protect same-sex partners creates an "unconstitutional situation".

<h2>Marriages and Japan</h2>

Japan is the only remaining G7 nation where same-sex marriage is banned. The Japanese constitution defines marriage as something based on "the mutual consent of both sexes".

As per a Reuters report, opinion polls on the issue have found overwhelming support for the legality of same-sex marriages. Roughly 70 per cent of the public said they are all for the legality of same-sex unions.

Japan court 'rescues' nation's LGBT community from 'hurt', says ban on same-sex marriage 'unconstitutional'

In India's capital, New Delhi, another senseless murder has left people stunned. A 36-year-old woman has been arrested for the alleged murder of her 35-year-old flatmate early Tuesday morning. The latest case comes just a day after the gruesome murder of a 16-year-old girl by her boyfriend shook the city.

The victim of the latest crime has&nbsp;been identified as Rani, who used to work as a beautician at a Gurgaon-based beauty parlour. As per a report by news agency ANI, Rani was found lying in a pool of&nbsp;blood after being stabbed by her flatmate. The accused was found sitting near the body.

A case has been filed against the accused under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Police are yet to recover the murder weapon — a kitchen knife.

Police were informed of the crime at around 7 am. The incident, as per ANI, took place in Majnu Ka Tila, in north Delhi's Civil Lines Area.&nbsp;

The two women were renting a flat together in Majnu ka Tila, a popular tourist spot in North Delhi.

On Monday night, the victim and the accused, along with a group of friends, had a dinner party at a mutual friend, Neha's house. At the party, which went on till around 1 am, alcohol was consumed and the murder happened under the influence.

Reportedly, during the house party, Sapna and Rani, who were both drunk, got into a fight.&nbsp;

Following the party, they both returned to their shared flat, where they kept drinking. Once there, the fight was reignited and things got heated up and the disagreement turned into a scuffle, during which Sapna stabbed Rani in the chest using a kitchen knife.

Reportedly, Rani abusing Sapna's dead father was the trigger for the assault and the murder.

Upon reaching the spot, police found Sapna sitting next to Rani's body, which was lying in a pool of blood. Sapna, as per the Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi, has confessed to the crime. A postmortem of Rani's body will be done, following which it'll be handed to her loved ones.

"Teams of FSL and crime have inspected the spot. We have registered a case of murder under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. Based on the investigation, the accused Sapna was arrested after she confessed to her crime. Efforts are being taken to recover the weapon of offence," said Kalsi.

In early May, the World Meteorological Organisation warned that 2023-2027 will be the warmest five-year period ever recorded, saying greenhouse gases and EI Nino combined to soaring temperatures.&nbsp;

The UN's meteorological department said there is a two-third chance that one of these&nbsp;five years could possibly see soaring temperatures, exceeding the ambitious target set in the Paris Accords in limiting climate change.&nbsp;

Many believed that inflation and the aftermath of powerful earthquakes that ripped the country could make Erdogan lose his bid, but following the results, it's obvious the natural disasters and the reforms didn't pose any dent to his victory.&nbsp;His challenger, Kemal Kilicdaroglu, had 47.9 per cent of the votes.

'There is no stopping': Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan sings to supporters following his win

Just hours after Pakistan's ruling coalition rejected Imran Khan's offer for dialogue, the former prime minister on Sunday (May 28th), in a video message to the masses, urged authorities to "break as many Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)&nbsp;members for the next three to four weeks but announce elections afterwards."

"Don't destroy the country just to keep Imran Khan out of politics, destroy as many people as you want to destroy quickly and don't waste time, announce immediate elections to save the country."

Khan started off the more than 20-minute-long&nbsp;video message by alleging that members of his party have been subject to a litany of abuses at the hands of Pakistani authorities.&nbsp;

Talking about Pakistan Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah's post-midnight press conference, the PTI chief claimed that female members of the party were being "mistreated and harassed by the state" for protesting peacefully.

Khan further counted off his government's achievements, mentioning the 'Billion Tree Tsunami', Pakistan's handling of the coronavirus pandemic, etc. Making mention of "three long marches" that took place during his regime, Khan said that no FIRs happened back then and that "whatever has happened since 25th March is planned".

Comparing the current scenario to General Pervez Musharraf's reign after the military coup of 1999, Khan said that even then, the situation wasn't this bad.

"What's happening now is a negation of our Jamhuriat (democracy)," said Imran Khan, adding that "fundamental rights, Supreme court orders are being ignored."

He also reiterated that the constitutional direction "to hold elections within 90 days was ignored by the government."

"Democracy is dead," said Khan, adding that he is appealing "to 15 judges of our Supreme Court on behalf of our people."&nbsp;

He said that "so far it seems that you are losing your power, freedom in front of the powerful" and urged them to "take a stand."

"History will remember your role," he implored.

"It is the right of every citizen to protest peacefully those who cause chaos and vandalism should be dealt with, but to destroy the entire party under the guise of it is the negation of democracy and the law of the jungle."

Khan further urged the "Judiciary to issue a suo motu notice that the women who only protested peacefully should be released and a full judicial inquiry should be conducted into the" chaos that happened during the recent protests in Pakistan.&nbsp;"We will fully cooperate in this," added Imran Khan.&nbsp;

‘PM Sharif govt worse than Musharraf’s,’ says Imran Khan as he urges Supreme Court to take action

Taking the prize as the world's slowest student, Arthur Ross, a 71-year-old man completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia (UBC), after an incredible 54-year journey. Ross currently holds the record for the "longest time taken to graduate," from the&nbsp;university.

In an interview with BBC, Ross said he enrolled at UBC in 1969 to pursue a bachelor's degree in English as he wanted to learn being curious about learning. He said this&nbsp;is what inspired him to finish the degree after all these years.

With an easy laugh, he said, "The headline of your story should be UBC finally graduates its slowest student."

The journey from English to theatre:

Recalling his intentions to pursue a&nbsp;bachelor's degree,&nbsp;Arthur later found his passion for theatre during his second year at UBC. His devotion to performing arts became all-consuming and he spent most of his time in the theatre department being so engrossed in participating in production that he&nbsp;enrolled in courses that fulfilled his aspiration to become an actor.&nbsp;

Remembering his days he said he was besotted with theatre at the time. "It was alive then, with a sense of vitality and newness. It seemed just electric to me." He added that in the department he crossed paths with several renowned Canadian actors such as Nicola Cavendish, Larry Lillo and Ruth Nichol, inspiring him to pursue theatres.&nbsp;

Ross left UBC after studying for two years. He then enrolled himself in a three-year comprehensive programme at the esteemed National Theatre School of Canada in Montreal.&nbsp;

A harsh realisation:

However, as Ross developed a deep love for acting he soon&nbsp;looked into the practical aspects of an actor's life and critically evaluated his own abilities, making him arrive at a painful realisation.&nbsp;

He said he liked it too much but realised it wasn't going to be healthy for him. "I know I was a good actor but I always thought you had to be great."

After this, the aspiring actor then went to&nbsp;three years of academic work at UBC and further went&nbsp;on to pursue&nbsp;law at a school in Toronto. He graduated and then spent 35 years as a civil litigator in Metro Vancouver till 2016 and then he retired.&nbsp;

A fresh chapter for Arthur:

Wasting no time after retiring, in 2017, Ross reached out to UBC&nbsp;initiating a fresh chapter in his journey. He obtained his new student number&nbsp;and began attending UBC as a part-time student. His academic pursuits shifted towards the realm of history, with a keen focus on the intricacies of the First World War.

He told UBC, "I'm appreciative of the students accepting that old guy tuning in from outer space."

'UBC finally graduates its slowest student:' Arthur Ross, 71, completes degree after 54 years

A judge has issued a temporary halt to South Carolina's new law that bans most abortions at around six weeks of pregnancy. The Friday ruling by Judge Clifton Newman came shortly after Governor Henry McMaster signed the bill into law. As a result, South Carolina will revert back to a ban on abortions at approximately 20 weeks after fertilisation until the state Supreme Court reviews the measure.

Judge Newman stated that the status quo should be maintained until the Supreme Court has an opportunity to review the law. "It's going to end up there," he said.

The newly passed law is similar to a previous ban on abortions once a heartbeat is detected, which was passed in 2021.&nbsp;

However, the state Supreme Court in a 3-2 decision ruled that the 2021 law violated the right to privacy outlined in the state constitution.&nbsp;

As per AP, legislative leaders believe that the new law makes some technical tweaks and that these may influence at least one justice to reconsider their position, especially since the author of the previous ruling has retired.

However, abortion rights group Planned Parenthood contends that the new law is so similar to the previous one that it would harm clinics and women seeking treatment if it remains in effect until a full court review.

Planned Parenthood immediately filed a lawsuit against the new law upon its signing, arguing that it created uncertainty for South Carolina's abortion clinics, resulting in cancelled appointments for patients in the later stages of pregnancy and requiring doctors to give careful consideration to the new regulations.&nbsp;

The majority opinion in the state Supreme Court ruling that struck down the 2021 law highlighted the authority of lawmakers to protect life but ultimately recognised that the privacy clause in the state constitution grants women the time to decide whether to have an abortion.&nbsp;

It stated that most women are unaware of their pregnancy at six weeks after conception.&nbsp;

Justice Kaye Hearn, who authored the opinion, has since retired, leaving the South Carolina Supreme Court as the only high court in the country without a female justice.

The changes made in the new law specifically target Justice John Few, who was part of the majority in the previous ruling. Justice Few expressed concerns about the poorly written nature of the 2021 law and suggested that a full ban on abortion would likely be constitutional.&nbsp;

He compared a ban to child abuse or rape laws and said that it would not violate privacy rights if a fetus is granted the same rights as a person.&nbsp;

However, this feature will not be available for old versions of Android, and might also not work in large group calls.&nbsp;

After installing the new version, many users might notice a few minor changes regarding the navigation bar, like that many icons, might be arranged in a certain order, like the following tabs in the bottom navigation bar: Chats, Calls, and Status.&nbsp;

The report further stated that this feature is only enabled if a user gives his/her consent to share the content on their screen.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp is reportedly working on its "screen-sharing" and "edit message" features. It is also anticipated to be working on a new feature called "WhatsApp usernames." With this feature, users will be able to choose unique and memorable names for their accounts.&nbsp;

The company might also allow users to contact others by entering a username within the app without knowing their mobile numbers, just like Telegram.&nbsp;

These features come as the instant message-sharing app previously announced that it will allow its users to edit their messages within 15 minutes after sending. In a blog post shared earlier this month, it said that users can correct misspellings, add more details, or change what they have sent to friends, family, and coworkers. This feature will soon be available to users across the world.&nbsp;

WhatsApp said, "To fix a text, press and hold the sent message and pick "edit." After the changes, it will then display "edited," but those receiving the message won't be able to see the edit history.

As reported by Boom Decode, the scheme had lured people to invest&nbsp;in pigs and other livestock online through a game, with the expectation of high returns.&nbsp;

The origins of the online scam can be traced back to a WhatsApp message that circulated in Bihar, claiming that purchasing animals online could yield profits of up to thousands of rupees within a few months. The message propagated the idea that an online game called ‘Smile Rancher’ helped a middle-aged man win big by "investing" in the online purchase of livestock. As per the claims, the man won INR 20 lakh or $2 million.

<h2>The scheme</h2>

The report quotes an 18-year-old victim of the scheme,&nbsp;Suraj Kumar who revealed that people had to create an account by entering a six-digit password. Once that was done, they would find pictures of dozens of animals which they could buy.

After paying for the purchase, all they had to do was log in everyday and click on the animal. This would result in them getting paid a certain amount in the app's wallet.

"The most expensive was the peacock, which cost Rs 50,000. It would earn Rs 3,000 a day. Duck was the cheapest one which cost Rs 5,000 rupees, the app claimed to offer Rs 400 for it every day," said Kumar.

"One had to log in every day and click on the animal or bird that was bought. The earnings on the animals would come in the wallet of the account which was created in the app," he added.

<h2>Could this money be withdrawn?</h2>

Yes, but most times people would receive a server error.

The maximum limit for withdrawal from the application wallet was Rs&nbsp;3000,&nbsp;however, people who purchased and bred these virtual animals said they would very often get error messages on attempting to withdraw money.

However, some people successfully withdrew small amounts of money. This only helped give people false hope.&nbsp;

As the word spread, more individuals became interested in investing and many people borrowed money or sold assets to enter the market.&nbsp;

But one day the app just stopped working.

As per transaction details accessed by Decode, the money people would spend on these virtual animals would go to the account of Sewing SKY India Pvt Limited — an unlisted company which according to the Indian Ministry of Corporate Affairs website deals in fabrics and is registered in Telangana Hyderabad and belongs to Gangadhar Pathri and Ajay Kumar Pathri.

Application stores like Google Play Store or the Apple AppStore have been unable to take any action because the application is not available on these platforms. People downloaded the application via a specific link shared on WhatsApp.

The app is now defunct.

<h2>Who sent them the message?</h2>

As per the villagers, a man called Bhishma Pratap&nbsp;spread these rumours. They say that Pratap claimed that his uncle was the one who won Rs 20,00,000 ($24,190).

For those interested in earning extra money, Pratap created a WhatsApp group named "Ranchers no. 1".&nbsp;As the admin of the group, he started adding more and more villagers, he then sent the forwarded application&nbsp;link to the group, which had more than 60 members. Pratap left the group the same day the application stopped working.

<h2>How did so many people fall for the scam?</h2>

The application called itself a "breeding management investment company from the United States."&nbsp;

It noted that was involved in "offline investment promotion for major breeding pastures and looking for investors who work part-time in the breeding industry".

It further claimed that after 2020, i.e., the pandemic, the company&nbsp;started doing its business online and started seeking people from all over the world to join the breeding industry and "make money together".

For residents of the small Bihar village of Maulanagar, this seemed like a good idea to earn some extra money. Most of the village residents belong to a socially marginalised community called the Musahars.

<h2>Has anyone filed a complaint?</h2>

Kasim Khan, a self-proclaimed victim of the scam, reportedly took action against the fraudulent company by filing a complaint with the Consumer Complaints Court on July 22nd 2022. In his complaint, Khan stated that he had invested Rs 55,000 in&nbsp;the scheme and attempted to withdraw the amount after two days, but was unsuccessful despite multiple attempts. He alleges that the company, Breeding Management, had now ceased operations and had deceived thousands of individuals through their online scam.&nbsp;

<h2>Was it just the one Bihar village that got duped?</h2>

Unfortunately no, the app has reportedly spread far from Bihar and has reached Assam.&nbsp;

The people of the small Bihar village got duped in February 2022, and in early July last year, a gym trainer in Guwahati Assam also received the link to that game. He and his colleagues invested in the app and lost thousands of rupees.

Shabazz Suleman, a 27-year-old British man from High Wycombe, has been sentenced to life in prison by a UK court for travelling to Syria nearly a decade ago to join the Islamic State (ISIS) group. He disappeared during a family holiday in Turkey. This, as per the news agency AFP, Turkey, which borders Syria, is a common route for Western individuals aspiring to join jihadist groups in Syria.&nbsp;

During the court proceedings, prosecutor Duncan Atkinson revealed that Suleman was detained by Turkish forces while attempting to travel to Syria, but later chose to participate in a prisoner exchange with ISIS.&nbsp;

Once in Syria, he shared his experiences on social media and gave incriminating interviews to Sky News.&nbsp;

Last week the Federation University in Victoria and the Western Sydney University in New South Wales wrote letters to education agents instructing&nbsp;them to not recruit students from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand and Jammu &amp; Kashmir, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.

The Federation Univeristy's letter to the agency read, "The university has observed a significant increase in the proportion of visa applications being refused from some Indian regions by the Department of Home Affairs."

It further warned that the issue currently seems to be short-term but might become an emerging trend.&nbsp;

The&nbsp;news came as Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was on a&nbsp;visit to the country and spoke of more Australian and Indian students studying and living together in each other's countries. He added how the two countries inked a migration and collaboration agreement to boost student, graduate and commercial exchanges.&nbsp;

Similarly, last month, several Australian universities, including Victoria University, Edith Cowan University and Southern Cross University, also imposed a ban on Indian students from certain states in response to the increased fraudulent applications seeking to work in the country.&nbsp;

Western Sydney University in its statement said that a large number of Indian students who commenced studying in the 2022 intake have not remained enrolled, which resulted in a high attrition rate. It designated Punjab, Gujarat and Haryana to be the ones with the highest risk of attrition.&nbsp;

The university added that the ban would be in place for at least two months - May and June 2023.&nbsp;

It also mentioned that additional measures to address the issue of non-genuine students enrolling from these regions would include changes to application screenings, stricter admission and an increase in commencement fees.&nbsp;

According to a study by the Department of Affairs, one in every four Indian applications is declared as "fraudulent" or "non-genuine."

Last week, the department told a federal parliamentary investigation that the rejection rate for Indian applicants is 24.3 per cent, the&nbsp;highest since 2012.

As per reports, this year, Australia is set to&nbsp;enrol the most number of Indian students ever, exceeding its previous high of 75,000.

A new study by MIT researchers, published in Scientific Reports has revealed that people are more creative after waking from the earliest stage of sleep. It was found that in the phase between when you're stuck between being asleep and being awake, your creative mind is quite fertile.

The researchers also found that when people are prompted to dream about a particular phase or topic during that sleep phase, they are more to perform creatively when asked to do three creative tasks around that topic.&nbsp;

Now you must be wondering how naps enable creativity. Here's your answer:

Kathleen Esfahany, the study's lead author and an MIT senior said when an individual is promoted to dream about a particular topic during sleep, he/she&nbsp;can have dream experiences that&nbsp;can be used later&nbsp;in creative tasks.&nbsp;

The study revealed that people who recieved the prompts or "targeted dream incubation," were able to create more creative stories than people who napped without a specific prompt or those who didn't sleep at all.&nbsp;

According to the findings, this dream stage enables the brain to make connections between disparate concepts which boosts creativity.

Adam Haar Horowitz, another leader of the study said that the connection between sleep and creativity also called N1 or hypnagogia has been known for a while, however, the new study wanted to explore whether it was possible to guide the content of people's dreams and how it would affect their creative process.

The testing process:

For this, the researchers developed a device called Dormio to target dream incubation. This includes a glove that measures three physiological markers of sleep- changes in muscle tone, heart rate and skin conductance by&nbsp;communicating these responses to smartphones or computers.&nbsp;

A total of 49 participants were tested for the experiment. Individuals were asked to wear the glove and then take a nap. It was found that in the phase between when you're stuck between being asleep and being awake, your creative mind is quite fertile. The researchers also found that when people are prompted to dream about a particular phase or topic during that sleep phase, they are more to perform creatively when asked to do three creative tasks around that topic. Here's your answer: Kathleen Esfahany, the study's lead author and an MIT senior said when an individual is promoted to dream about a particular topic during sleep, he/she can have dream experiences that can be used later in creative tasks. The study revealed that people who recieved the prompts or "targeted dream incubation," were able to create more creative stories than people who napped without a specific prompt or those who didn't sleep at all. According to the findings, this dream stage enables the brain to make connections between disparate concepts which boosts creativity. Adam Haar Horowitz, another leader of the study said that the connection between sleep and creativity also called N1 or hypnagogia has been known for a while, however, the new study wanted to explore whether it was possible to guide the content of people's dreams and how it would affect their creative process. The testing process: For this, the researchers developed a device called Dormio to target dream incubation. This includes a glove that measures three physiological markers of sleep- changes in muscle tone, heart rate and skin conductance by communicating these responses to smartphones or computers. A total of 49 participants were tested for the experiment. Individuals were asked to wear the glove and then take a nap.
