According to research by Nasrul Ismail, a lecturer in criminology at Bristol University, the impact of austerity has left English prisons "unable to provide safe environments for rising prison populations".

A government report revealed that 52 per cent of prisons in England and Wales were overcrowded as of September 2022.

There are currently just under 90,000 people in prisons in the UK, reports The Guardian.&nbsp;

Last year, the government even announced a £500 million (a little more than $622mn) funding injection to create thousands of new prison places for both men and women.&nbsp;

However, it's not just space for prisoners, the prison system is also struggling to recruit and retain staff.

As per the Guardian report, in 2021-22, the number of prison officers and custodial managers fell by 600. Losing staff has also contributed to the safety issues, putting safety at risk. Many experienced officers are leaving the workforce and prisons are struggling to recruit and retain new staff to replace them.

Talking to the Observer, UK-based charity Howard League for Penal Reform's director of campaigns, Andrew Neilson said that his organisation had called for staff to be given more training and guidance. However, he added, "we know that many experienced officers have since left the workforce and prisons have struggled to recruit and retain people to replace them."

He also said that there has been "minimal research – and a worrying lack of coherent and consistently applied policies – in relation to consensual and coercive sex behind bars."

Sexual violence is a problem not just for the female prison estate but also for male ones.

According to the latest statistics on safety in custody published by the UK Ministry of Justice, there were a total of 20,993 assaults in the 12 months leading up to December 2022. Out of these, 12 per cent were classified as "serious assaults," which encompass sexual violence incidents. This represents a 19 per cent rise in the number of serious assaults compared to the previous year. The number of prisoner-on-prisoner sexual assaults, however, fell to 195, which is 26 per cent lower than the 265 incidents that were recorded in 2019.

"The district judge passed the order without any basis as it should have called for expert opinion from&nbsp;Archaeological Survey of India&nbsp;(ASI) on whether carbon dating of the shivling could be done without causing any harm. Therefore, the order should be quashed," argued Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain who appeared for the revisionists.

“The High Court has agreed to our prayer for a scientific probe of the shivling that was found inside the so-called mosque complex. The Muslim side says it is a fountain. We say it is a shivling. The court has ordered that without any damage to the shivling, analysis and study of it be done," added&nbsp;Advocate Hari Shankar Jain.&nbsp;

Advocates represented by the American Civil Liberties Union filed a legal challenge against the new asylum bars, claiming they violate US and international laws.

CHIKMAGALUR:

The Chikmagalur district&nbsp;is one of the key constituencies among 224 seats in the Karnataka Assembly polls 2023. This district is important for BJP as it has been a stronghold of the party for nearly 20 years. In 2018, BJP's CT Ravi won the district seat by defeating rival Congress candidate by a margin of 263,414 votes. The district recorded 82.2 per cent voter turnout in the previous Karnataka assembly election.&nbsp;

But after the results were announced Bommai admitted defeat and said that the party will introspect once the results are out. He said, "In spite of a lot of efforts put in by PM & BJP workers, we've not been able to make the mark. Once the full results come we'll do a detailed analysis. Toyota Motor Corp on Friday admitted that the vehicle data of 2.15 million customers in Japan, including those of its luxury brand Lexus, had been publicly available for almost a decade due to a 'human error'. The incident, which affected nearly the entire customer base who signed up for Toyota’s main cloud service platforms since 2012, was caused by a cloud system being set to public instead of private.

It also affected customers who signed up for the T-Connect — a service that provides a wide range of services including AI voice-enabled driving assistance, auto connection to call centres for vehicle management, and emergency support in such cases as a traffic accident or sudden illness — and Lexus vehicle's G-Link services were affected.&nbsp;

As per the company, while there have been no reports of malicious use, details such as vehicle locations and identification numbers of vehicle devices could have been compromised.&nbsp;

This incident, as per Reuters, comes to light as Toyota is making a push into vehicle connectivity and cloud-based data management to offer autonomous driving and other artificial intelligence-backed features.

Responding to a question regarding why it took Toyota so long to realise the mistake, a spokesperson for the company said, "There was a lack of active detection mechanisms, and activities to detect the presence or absence of things that became public."

The issue, as per Reuters, began in November 2013 and lasted until mid-April of this year.

The Personal Information Protection Commission in Japan has been notified of the incident, but the body has declined to disclose details in accordance with their practice. Toyota has taken measures to prevent unauthorised outside access to the data and is conducting an investigation of all cloud environments managed by Toyota Connected Corp.

Toyota’s announcement follows several other major data breaches in Japan, including one in March when mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo said the data of up to 5.29 million customers may have leaked via a company to which it had outsourced work.

The incident adds to a series of challenges Koji Sato, who took over as Toyota CEO on April 1 from Akio Toyoda, faces.

‘Human error’ exposed vehicle data of 2.15 million Toyota customers for over a decade

The Kremlin has denied allegations that it was meddling in Turkey's upcoming presidential election campaign. Recently Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan's main rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu accused Moscow of spreading "deep fakes" targeting him.

Earlier this week, opposition politician Kilicdaroglu claimed that ahead of the crucial Sunday elections, Russia was targeting him with an online smear campaign.

Replying to the allegations, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "We strongly reject such statements".

"We officially declare: there can be no talk of any interference."&nbsp;

"If someone provided Mr. Kilicdaroglu with such information, they are liars," he added, as reported by the AFP.

Kilicdaroglu's allegations came hours after Third-party candidate Muharrem Ince dropped out from the presidential elections. Withdrawing his candidacy just days before the elections, on Thursday, Ince said: "I am doing this for my country."&nbsp;

Taking to Twitter, Kilicdaroglu addressed "Russian friends" and said, "You are behind the montages, conspiracies, deep fakes and tapes that were exposed in this country yesterday." He did not provide any details.

As per the news agency AFP, recent polls show the secular opposition leader edging ahead of Erdogan in Sunday's presidential ballot. They reportedly show&nbsp;challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu possessing a slight advantage and close to breaking the 50-per cent threshold needed to avoid a runoff on May 28.

However, as per Kremlin spokesman Peskov, Russia is doing nothing of that sort, and that Moscow "highly values" its bilateral relations with Turkey.

"Turkey has a very responsible, sovereign and thought-through position on a whole range of regional and global problems that we face," he said.

In recent months, even as Russia faces criticism from various nations, Moscow and Ankara have maintained close ties. Erdogan has also, at times, played the role of a mediator, talking to both Russia and Ukraine.

In recent days, disinformation has added a dark note to the pivotal elections that on Sunday will decide if Erdogan — who has been Turkey's President since 2014 — will remain in power.

Recently, at a huge rally, Recep Tayyip Erdogan played a 14-second clip which allegedly was proof that his rival Kemal Kilicdaroglu has formed a union with "terrorists"&nbsp;and outlawed Kurdish militants. The clip was played at the rally and beamed live on TV, following which challenger Kilicdaroglu had fumed: "How can a person sitting in the president's chair stoop this low."

Russia ‘strongly’ denies accusations of spreading deep fakes, meddling in Turkey elections

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has labelled the "relief" provided to his predecessor Imran Khan by the courts as "double standards" in corruption cases and termed him a 'laadla' of courts. Responding to the&nbsp;Supreme Court's granting of relief to its "laadla" Imran Khan, Sharif said the "double standards&nbsp;have led to the death of justice in Pakistan". 
 
Pakistan's Supreme Court granted&nbsp;a major relief for Khan&nbsp;on Thursday when it declared his dramatic arrest "unlawful" and "invalid" and ordered his immediate release after he was produced before a bench on its orders. 
 
Sharif said that the apex court's relief was nothing but an NRO. He was referring to the infamous National Reconciliation Ordinance, which was used by past leaders to pardon their allies, before being outlawed by the top court itself. 
 
Addressing Pakistan's federal cabinet, Sharif referred to the arrests of PML-N [Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz)] supremo Nawaz Sharif and other members of the federal coalition and asked why such&nbsp;leniency was not given to them.&nbsp;

Calling&nbsp;Imran Khan the "laadla," a crude reference that roughly translates to blue-eyed-boy, he said, "If you want to keep favouring this laadla then you should also release all the dacoits behind bars in the country."

"Let this be free for all," he said, adding that everyone will bear the consequences of whatever followed next.

Talking about the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party workers' protests, he said they have disrespected the martyrs of Pakistan in a way that has never been done by "our enemies".

Lamenting the protests after Imran Khan's May 9 arrest, he said such scenes have not been witnessed in Pakistan since the fall of Dhaka in 1973.

"The attacks on army installations, there can be no greater terrorism in the country," he said. "And seeing all this, a country, I don’t want to take its name, was celebrating that what couldn’t happen in 75 years is now happening in Pakistan."

He said that even after the death of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the nation had erupted into protests but no one "moved towards military installations".

UN's quarterly update for the months of January to March found that in the nation, violence was "becoming more extreme and more frequent (and) spreading relentlessly as gangs seek to extend their control".

"This follows the killing of at least 846 people in the first three months of 2023, in addition to 393 injured and 395 kidnapped during that period — a 28-per cent increase in violence on the previous quarter."

As per Turk's office, the areas that were previously considered safe were now affected.

Gangs are reportedly using snipers to "indiscriminately" shoot people in the streets and are also "firing into homes".

Furthermore, people were "being burned alive on public transport," but authorities do not have the "capacity to respond," forcing civilians to form vigilante groups to fight the gangs.

Dating back to 1944,&nbsp;Title 42 or also known as the Public Health Act, grants US authorities emergency powers to prevent the spread of disease. Using the law and the pandemic as justification, the US authorities were able to expel migrants attempting to cross the border from Mexico, including those seeking humanitarian asylum.

Even the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said that the order was necessary for crowded migration detention camps to stop the spread of the deadly virus. According to the data from US Customs and Border Protection, during the 2021-2022 fiscal year, over two million people were expelled under the policy.&nbsp;

Later in 2021, after President Joe Biden came into power, his administration kept the policy in place and continued to defend it as a public health measure for over a year.&nbsp;

Why has the use of Title 42 been controversial?

Immigration advocates and humanitarian groups accused Trump of using the pandemic as an excuse to deny thousands of people migrating to the US the chance for humanitarian relief through asylum.&nbsp;

The groups have also been accusing the Biden administration of continuing to use it. The groups have argued that the measure strokes racism and allows for discrimination because many countries had been exempt.&nbsp;However, following the accusations, the Biden administration allowed some 30,000 people to enter the country through humanitarian parole.&nbsp;

What is currently happening?

The Biden administration plans to lift Title 42 when the US Covid public emergency ends. This means the migrants crossing the border will be able to request asylum again. The officials are currently preparing for the illegal influx.&nbsp;

What happens next once Title 42 is gone?

After the law is lifted, the Biden administration plans to issue a new regulation that would deny asylum to most migrants crossing if they passed through another country en route to the US without seeking any protecting or failing to use legal pathways.

The authorities aim to process migrants in days and swiftly deport them if they fail in an initial asylum screening.&nbsp;

Some 500 US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) personnel will be temporarily assigned to help with the interviews and even Pentagon will be sending 1,500 troops to help with the border patrol.

A tally of about 95.13 per cent of the ballots revealed that Chile's Republican Party, led by Jose Antonio Kast, secured nearly 35 per cent of the votes.

Of the rest of the votes, a coalition of traditional right-wing parties gained just over 20 per cent, while President Gabriel Boric's left-wing coalition received about 29 per cent of the votes. The remaining votes went to centrist parties.

Former conservative firebrand presidential candidate Jose Antonio Kast, who lost to Boric in 2021, during a speech in Santiago branded his opponent's government a "failed" one.

The final results will determine the exact makeup of a 50-seat Constitutional Council that will be in charge of drafting a new constitution.&nbsp;

Any articles will be approved with a three-fifths majority.&nbsp;

The constitutional advisers elected on Sunday will commence the process of drafting a new constitution in June. The draft will be based on a draft compiled by 24 constitutional experts appointed by Congress in March. Once the draft is complete, voters will have the opportunity to approve or reject it in December.

Reuters reported&nbsp;that this marks the latest step in a years-long effort to overhaul Chile's dictatorship-era text. The effort began after nearly 80 per cent of Chileans voted to draft a new constitution in 2020. This was preceded by violent protests against inequality.

The first rewrite was drafted by largely independent and left-leaning constituents with a focus on social welfare, environmental protections, gender equality, and indigenous rights. Despite being viewed as one of the most progressive constitutions globally, a lot of voters deemed it too divisive, and the procedure was embroiled in controversies.

The draft was rejected by 62 per cent of the voters. For backing the first constitution rewrite, Boric has suffered a setback and his approval ratings have plummeted.

Since voter rejection of the first draft, the president has distanced himself from the process while promising to support it. Boric reassured reporters after casting his vote on Sunday that the government would respect the council's autonomy and serve as a guarantor while assisting its requests.

"The government won't meddle with the process and will respect the entity's autonomy in its deliberation."

Delivered remarks from Santiago's La Moneda presidential palace he called for unity and urged the opposition to learn from the previous failed attempt, stating that he wanted the Republican Party, to avoid making the same blunders as his party. Boric stated that the process should not be about vendettas but prioritising Chile's interests.

"I want to invite the Republican Party, that's won an unquestionable majority, to not make the same mistakes we made," he said. "This process can't be about vendettas, but putting Chile first."

Chaab, as per Reuters, was sentenced to death for his alleged offence, i.e., being "corrupt on earth," a capital offence that in Iran carries the death penalty under the nation's strict Islamic laws.&nbsp;

"The death sentence for Habib Chaab... nicknamed Habib Asyud, the head of the Harakat al-Nidal terrorist group... was carried out today, Saturday morning," reported the judiciary's Mizan Online website.

He was brought to trial by Iran in 2022, wherein he was charged with leading the Harakat al-Nidal, or Arab Struggle Movement, for the Liberation of Ahwaz. The outfit, as per reports, seeks a separate state in the oil-rich Khuzestan province in southwestern Iran.

The group is also blamed for plotting and carrying out "numerous bombings and terrorist operations" including one on a military parade in 2018, in which 25 people were killed, and almost 250 were wounded.

Swedish government which had reportedly voiced its concerns over the case has reacted to it with dismay at Chaab's execution. Talking to the press, Swedish Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom said that the execution was "inhuman" and that his government had pleaded with Iran not to carry out the sentence.

"The death penalty is an inhuman and irreversible punishment and Sweden, together with the rest of the EU, condemns its application under all circumstances," said the Swedish Foreign Minister.

Previously Iranian state television had aired a video of Chaab in which he confessed to the 2018 attack on a military parade in Ahvaz, the capital of the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

In the footage, Chaab also admitted to working with Saudi intelligence services.However, such confessions are frequently condemned by rights groups based outside of Iran as "forced", arguing they are often obtained under duress. One earthquake that occurred on July 18, 1918, known as the "Srimagal Earthquake," had a 7.6 magnitude, making it to the deadliest list as it caused severe damage in Srimanngal, but minor damages in Dhaka were experienced.

Most of the construction in Dhaka does not comply with the building code, said Dr Mehedi Ahemd Ansary, a professor at the Department of civil engineering of Buet who specialises in geotechnical and earthquake engineering.

This means the whole city will be at risk if there is a major earthquake, Ansary told The Dhaka Tribune newspaper.&nbsp;

He further predicted that if an earthquake of magnitude 7 hits the capital, at least 300,000 people may die.&nbsp;

According to experts, almost 90&nbsp;per cent of deaths from an earthquake happen when people are either trapped inside a building or if they do not know what to do when a quake strikes.&nbsp;

The South Asian country sits on three fault zones and three cities- Sylhet, Chittagong and Dhaka- are the three hot zones. Experts state that if a strong earthquake strikes any of these, it will cause massive destruction to the country and will cause hundreds and thousands of deaths.&nbsp;

The agency added that the earthquake was at a depth of 10 km (6.21 miles), Reuters reported. In December 2022, a moderate earthquake of 5.2 magnitudes on the Richter scale jolted Dhaka and other states of the South Asian country. Another quake of magnitude 4 was felt in the capital city on April 25. Experts quoted by TBS News stated that Bangladesh has gone 130 years without a major earthquake. One earthquake that occurred on July 18, 1918, known as the "Srimagal Earthquake," had a 7.6 magnitude, making it to the deadliest list as it caused severe damage in Srimanngal, but minor damages in Dhaka were experienced. Most of the construction in Dhaka does not comply with the building code, said Dr Mehedi Ahemd Ansary, a professor at the Department of civil engineering of Buet who specialises in geotechnical and earthquake engineering. This means the whole city will be at risk if there is a major earthquake, Ansary told The Dhaka Tribune newspaper. He further predicted that if an earthquake of magnitude 7 hits the capital, at least 300,000 people may die. According to experts, almost 90 per cent of deaths from an earthquake happen when people are either trapped inside a building or if they do not know what to do when a quake strikes. The South Asian country sits on three fault zones and three cities- Sylhet, Chittagong and Dhaka- are the three hot zones. Experts state that if a strong earthquake strikes any of these, it will cause massive destruction to the country and will cause hundreds and thousands of deaths. IMD weather scientist Kuldeep Srivastav said, "There is a strong western disturbance trough over the western Himalayas and an cyclonic circulation over north-east Rajasthan and adjoining southern Haryana. This weather system covers entire Delhi-NCR, so the region saw consistent rain. The activity will pacify and Thursday may see drizzle or very light rain at one&nbsp;or two places, though the sky will remain unclear. The maximum temperature will rise."

Delhi on Wednesday&nbsp;witnessed bright clear skies for some time after a wet start to the week, although later in the evening there was widespread heavy rainfall throughout the capital with its base station Safdarjung recording 20.99mm in nine hours, the highest this year, surpassing January 30, 2023 record.&nbsp;

So far, the city has recorded 36.9mm of rain in the first three days of May, exceeding the month's usual rainfall.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, several areas&nbsp;like Palam recorded 11.8mm, Lodhi Road recorded 24.6mm, Ridge area recorded 14.6mm, Ayangar recorded 13.8mm, Mayur Vihar recorded 8mm and Pitampura recorded 55.5mm of rainfall respectively.&nbsp;

Lajpat Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan, Mehrauli Badarpur Road, Pul Prahladpur underpass and Zakhir witnessed waterlogging&nbsp;on roads.

The maximum temperature recorded was 30.6 degrees Celsius, nine notches below the usual, while the minimum temperature was clocked at 20.1 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal.&nbsp;

The wet and stormy weather caused flights from Mumbai to be diverted to Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

Following this, the US tech firm pulled down the link but defended its right to communicate its concerns through the "marketing campaigns" on its platforms and denied altering search results to favour the bill.&nbsp;

In a statement, the company said, "We support discussions on measures to combat the phenomenon of misinformation. All Brazilians have the right to be part of this conversation, and as such, we are committed to communicating our concerns about Bill 2630 publicly and transparently."

The Brazilian antitrust regulator Cade stated that it would investigate the tech companies' campaigns against the bill.&nbsp;
