An analysis of companies listed in 12 stock exchanges globally found that since 2018, women have had an average of 5.2 years as chief executives, while men lasted an average of 8.1 years.

"While the sample size is too small to be significant, we also need to consider whether the data may support the glass cliff theory,"&nbsp;she said, as quoted by The Guardian.

<h2>What is the glass cliff theory?</h2>

The glass cliff theory poses that women are more likely to be appointed as leaders when an organisation or company is in a time of crisis. This is often so that the female executives' position is seen as more precarious than their male counterparts.

Previously, in 2005, research by Researchers at the University of Exeter found that women are more likely to be appointed as board members after a company's share price had performed badly.&nbsp;

Michelle Ryan, director of the Global Institute for Women's Leadership at the Australian National University in Canberra, who is one of the two researchers behind the 2005 research, said that Reynold's analysis was "robust and added to the work in this area".

She added that "this reduced tenure could be for a number of reasons – because there is often higher turnover in times of crisis, because they are judged as not performing well, even though poor performance was in train before their appointment, or because when things start to turn around, men come back into leadership roles."

The two leaders, along with Israeli soldiers and officials, also walked into some houses that were burned during the October 7 attacks.

Johnson, as reported by Reuters, said that he believed that the attacks, which killed over 1,400 Israelis, might suggest that the memory of the Holocaust is “starting to fade” but stressed that antisemitism "simply cannot be tolerated".

<h2>Memory of the Holocaust 'starting to fade'</h2>

Later, talking to the press, Johnson said he believed that the attacks, which killed over 1,400 Israelis, might suggest that the memory of the Holocaust is "starting to fade". He also stressed that antisemitism "simply cannot be tolerated".

"There's been no single attack like this on the Jewish people since the Second World War, and that's a matter of record," said Johnson.

"I think that maybe because across the world, the memory and the lesson of that appalling crime, where six million died, the memory may be starting to fade. And it may be that what we're really seeing right now, in some of these marches and these demos, and the unthinking way people are talking about this issue, what we're starting to see perhaps, I hope this really isn't the case, we're seeing more and more evidence of antisemitism."

"In the end, that is something that simply cannot be tolerated, neither in my country nor anywhere else," he emphasised.

In the attack, as per Israeli estimates, around 1,400 people were killed, while more than 230 were taken hostage by the militants. These kidnapped individuals, which involve foreign nationals and around 30 children, remain with the Hamas, amid calls for their release. As of Sunday, more than 9,770 Palestinians have been killed in the war, said Gaza health officials.

China's top spy agency, the Ministry of State Security, on Tuesday (Oct 31) said it had discovered 'illegal meteorological stations' with foreign links, reported CNN.

It said that these weather stations were sending real-time updates outside China to foreign governments.

This, as per South China Morning Post (SCMP), was labelled an infringement upon its data rules and poses national security risks by China.

These facilities were found in 20 provinces across China. To detect them, China investigated over 3,000 overseas-related meteorological stations.&nbsp;

On WeChat, China's alternative to WhatsApp, the spy agency, said, "Meteorological data constitutes an essential component of data security and resource security; it is closely linked to national, food and ecological security, climate change, along with public interests."

As per the state security ministry, some of these spy weather stations were located near China's military and defence units, while others were near its main grain producer and were monitoring, analysing the nation's crop growth and production.

Just eight months back, the US Air Force announced that it had shot down a suspected spy balloon that was flying across North American airspace. 
 
At the time, China said it was a civilian vessel being used for meteorological research.

This episode sent relations between the two nations plummeting to a new low and eventually halted top-level engagements for months.

"They could have asked me on any given day what a deal was worth," he said, adding: "I may not have known that it was going to be used in aggregate for the statements of financial condition."

Donald Jr. and his brother Eric are co-defendants, along with their father, in this case. His sister Ivanka Trump is not a co-defendant but has been ordered to testify.

In another incident on Mindanao, a woman was killed when a gunfight broke out after a van carrying a village captain and her supporters was stopped on a road by people backing her rival in Lanao del Norte province, the army said.

The husband of a village captain in Lanao del Sur province died after he was shot in the chest during a confrontation with his wife's rival, police said.

In 2009, before it was divided into two provinces, Maguindanao was the scene of the country's deadliest single incident of political violence on record.

Fifty-eight people were massacred as gunmen allegedly working for a local warlord attacked a group of people to stop a rival from filing his election candidacy.

<h2>'Very important' result&nbsp;</h2>

In the run-up to Monday's vote, there were 30 confirmed incidents of election-related violence, compared with 35 in 2018, the Philippine National Police said Sunday, without providing an updated breakdown for the number of dead and injured.

About one-third of the incidents happened in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Previous police data showed eight people were killed and seven injured in poll-related violence between August 28 and October 25.

More than 67 million people were registered to vote in the elections, which President Ferdinand Marcos described Monday as "very important" for higher-level politicians.

"What happens here in the barangay (village)... &nbsp;are going to have an effect on the results of the mid-term elections and subsequently at the national elections," Marcos said after casting his vote in his family's stronghold of Batac City in the northern province of Ilocos Norte.

"If other barangays tell you 'I will deliver 350 votes for you in my barangay', rest assured, you will get 350. That's why the result is very important."

Polling stations were due to close at 3:00 pm (0700 GMT), but voting was extended in some places.

Vote counting was underway and results would be announced late Monday, said Garcia.

Village elections are supposed to be held every three years, but the last vote was in 2018.

Starting Wednesday, the Pakistani government will start arresting undocumented Afghans and taking them to new holding centres, where they will be processed before being forcibly made to return to Afghanistan.

<h2>Pakistan's announcement</h2>

On October 4th, Pakistan announced that starting Wednesday (Nov 1st) it will expel undocumented migrants who do not leave on their own.

There are already reports of harassment and extortion from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where the majority of Afghan migrants live. However, police as per AFP, said they are yet to begin arrests.

The expulsion threat as per reports came after suicide bombings this year, which the South Asian nation's government said involved Afghans. However, Pakistan did not provide any evidence for the allegation. Islamabad has also blamed Afghan citizens for smuggling and other militant attacks in the nation.

As per the Taliban's data, between Sept 23 to Oct 22, some 60,000 Afghans have returned from Pakistan.&nbsp;

Recent daily returnee figures to Afghanistan, as per a Reuters report quoting Taliban refugee ministry spokesman Abdul Mutaleb Haqqani, are three times higher than normal.

"Thousands of Afghan refugees are waiting for their turn in vehicles, lorries, and trucks, and the number continues to grow," said Irshad Mohmand, a senior government official at the Torkham border, while talking to AFP.

"More than 10,000 refugees have gathered since morning."

<h2>Harassment or not</h2>

Afghanistan's Taliban government, as per AFP, has said that Pakistan's policy amounts to "harassment".

<h2>Leaving 'home'</h2>

Talking to Reuters, an undocumented Pakistan-born Afghan national who is married to a Pakistani woman said: "We'd live here our whole life if they didn't send us back."

Over four million Afghans have made Pakistan their home, and about 1.7 million of them, according to Islamabad, are undocumented. While many of them sought refuge in Pakistan after the 2021 Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, a large number have been present since the 1979 Soviet invasion.

<h2>The origins of Great Sphinx of Giza</h2>

Some decades ago, in 1981, Farouk El-Baz, a geologist writing in the Smithsonian Magazine, theorised that like the pyramids, the Egyptians didn't create the mighty Sphinx from scratch. Instead, he speculated that the desert winds had a hand in the formation of the overall contours of the Abū al-Hawl, or "Father of Terror."

Now, more than 40 years later, researchers from the New York University have tested El-Baz's theory and there actually might be some truth to it.&nbsp;

<h2>How they tested the theory</h2>

Using fluid dynamics, scientists from the New York University (NYU) created miniature, lion-like landforms from clay. They deduced that it is actually possible that ancient Egyptians were inspired by the shape of a rock and visualised the Sphinx as we know it.

Led by Leif Ristroph, the team from New York University was originally studying how water eroded clay when they were "struck" by a familiar shape.

"We were struck by the resemblance to a seated lion or a lion in repose. And I was reading about this and came across the idea that perhaps even the Great Sphinx was one of these natural formations that then got, obviously, a little facelift from the ancient Egyptians," said Ristroph, in a conversation with New Science. Their findings have been published in&nbsp;Physical Review Fluids.

While the way water erodes clay and how wind may erode rocks are different, Jani Radebaugh of the Birmingham Young University, Utah, said that the behaviour observed by the NYU team is a geological phenomenon called 'Yardang' that exists in deserts across the world. She says that these Yardangs also exist on Mars, where the lack of water has allowed erosion to create sphinx-like shapes.

Ristroph and his colleagues are now working on developing a mathematical description of the geological process that may have contributed to the Sphinx's origins.

The Subsurface Water Ice Mapping (SWIM), a NASA-funded project, has released its fourth and the more recent map of the prospective locations of subsurface water ice on Mars. This, as per NASA officials, will help mission planners decide where exactly to send the first humans to Mars.

As per a statement on the NASA website, ice buried on Mars will be a vital source for humans on Mars, serving both as drinking water and a key ingredient for rocket fuel.

Furthermore, these prospective locations of buried ice could one day help us know more about the red planet. Astronauts or robots could drill ice cores, that could help uncover "the climate history of Mars and exploring potential habitats (past or present) for microbial life."

While locations with buried ice may be the best locations for landing humans on Mars, scientists don't want astronauts to go to locations that are too chilly. This is because cold will lead to the crew using up "precious energy" to stay warm.

"If you send humans to Mars, you want to get them as close to the equator as you can," said Sydney Do, SWIM's project manager, said in a statement. Hence, as per Sydney, an ideal spot would be a patch that has accessible ice but with as low a latitude as possible. Martian ice maps will help navigate this dilemma and decide on the apt location for human landing.

A San Diego-based aquarium and theme park has announced a 'once in a decade' event. For the first time in 13 years, SeaWorld San Diego celebrated the rare hatching of an emperor penguin chick, marking a significant event for the park.

<h2>'Exciting thing'</h2>

On Wednesday, SeaWorld announced that the emperor penguin chick came out of its eggshell with the help of the zoo staff on September 12.

In a video shared with the press, Justin Brackett, SeaWorld's birds curator, stressed the exceptional nature of this development&nbsp;and said: "This is the most exciting thing we'll do all year, potentially all decade."

<h2>Why is this so significant?</h2>

The emperor penguin is classified as a threatened species and is native to Antarctica. At SeaWorld, 17 of these penguins are kept in a controlled habitat that is maintained at a chilly 25 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 5 degrees Celsius).&nbsp;

While the zoo houses around 300 penguins from various species, the successful hatching of the emperor penguin held special significance for SeaWorld's staff, said supervisor of the birds, Melissa Ramsey, who was directly involved in the hatching process.

Unlike some other penguin species that lay multiple eggs annually, the female emperor only lays a single egg each year, clarified Ramsey during a telephone interview with Reuters.

The park disclosed that the egg was laid on July 7.

<h2>Emperor penguins</h2>

The largest among penguin species, the emperor penguin, scientifically known as Aptenodytes forsteri, can grow up to 3.7 feet (1.15 meters) in height and can weigh as much as 99 pounds (45 kilograms), according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

The species' egg-laying habits differ from other species. Emperor penguins only lay one egg at a time. In most penguin species, both male and female penguins usually take turns incubating the egg. However, the female emperor generally returns to the sea to feed after laying the egg, leaving the male to tend to the egg for over two months without feeding.&nbsp;

<h2>The artificial hatching</h2>

The recent zoo hatching was also unique due to the fact that the mother penguin did not transfer the egg to the father for incubation.

Due to this, SeaWorld's staff assumed the responsibility. They noticed signs of movement and sound from within the egg on September 7. However, after 72 hours without any significant progress, the team intervened.&nbsp;

In the past, bear encounters were primarily related to foragers and hikers in the forests. However, as per the Guardian, the once-distinct boundaries between bear habitats and depopulated villages have blurred, resulting in more frequent human encounters with bears in urban areas.

Reports from Japan's Kyodo news agency reveal that 15 of Japan's 47 prefectures reported bear attacks in the six months leading up to September. The highest number of incidents occurred in Akita, followed by Iwate and Fukushima.

Donald Trump has been accused of trying to "send an unmistakable and threatening message to a foreseeable witness" during the federal election interference case against him.&nbsp;

This comes as just a few days earlier, Trump's former chief of staff Mark Meadows was reportedly granted immunity as he testified in front of a grand jury in Washington.

Special counsel Jack Smith alleged intimidation in a court filing on Wednesday (Oct 25th) that sought a gag order against the ex-president. The order was granted by Judge Tanya Chutkan only to be suspended after an appeal by Trump's lawyers, reports The Guardian.

As per an ABC News report on Tuesday, Mark Meadows was granted immunity, which typically lets a witness provide only limited statements that the justice department can't use against them for federal charges.

Meadows reportedly provided testimony that included evidence of him informing Trump that the election fraud allegations were unsubstantiated, reported the publication.

Trump's former chief of staff could be a major witness against the ex-president, given his proximity to efforts to overturn the 2020 elections.

Donald Trump accused of sending 'threatening message to a foreseeable witness'

A Democratic congressman admitted a misdemeanour charge of deliberately setting off a fire alarm at the US Capitol complex that forced the evacuation of an office building ahead of a crucial vote.

Jamaal Bowman appeared in DC Superior Court on Wednesday, where he agreed to pay a $1,000 fine and write an apology to police in return for the charges being withdrawn in three months, according to court documents and a statement from the New York lawmaker.

Bowman, 47, said he was rushing from his office to make the September 30 vote on a funding bill aimed at averting a government shutdown and pulled the alarm in an attempt to open a door he couldn't get through.

That caused Cannon House office block near the main Capitol building to be evacuated for an hour.

"After pulling the fire alarm, Rep. Bowman fled the scene, passed by multiple Capitol Police officers and had every opportunity to alert USCP of his mistake."

Category 5 Hurricane Otis roars into Mexico, causing widespread destruction

NASA is gearing up to launch its most ambitious alien world exploration ever: another ocean world. The US space agency in 2027 will launch its only mission to explore such a world.&nbsp;

<h2>Dragonfly</h2>

NASA's Dragonfly is a nuclear-powered, car-sized drone that is "designed to investigate the complex chemistry that is the precursor to life."

The mission, which is expected to last for nearly three years, will study how organic compounds formed, and if Saturn's moon currently has or ever had life.

It will be equipped with cameras, sensors and samplers that will examine Titan's dense, nitrogen-rich atmosphere, which is known to contain organic material that scientists believe may have come in contact with liquid water beneath its organic-rich, icy surface.

Dragonfly is scheduled to launch around 2027, and it is expected to reach Titan by the mid-2030s.&nbsp;

<h2>Will it be able to bear Titan's unique atmosphere?</h2>

To test Dragonfly, mission engineers have already conducted two test campaigns in NASA Langley’s 14-by-22-foot Subsonic Tunnel, and two in the 16-foot Transonic Dynamics Tunnel (TDT).&nbsp;

As per Ken Hibbard, Dragonfly mission systems engineer at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), "All of these tests feed into our Dragonfly Titan simulations and performance predictions".

They've been conducting test campaigns at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Researchers have made attempts to assess the vehicle's aerodynamic performance in harsh, unique conditions anticipating what Dragonfly will have to face during the various stages of the mission.

Recently, in one of its latest tests, the team behind Dragonfly set up a half-scale lander model of the spacecraft. This was used to test the space vehicle's descent once it arrives on Titan and its flight over the surface.

"We tested conditions across the expected flight envelope at a variety of wind speeds, rotor speeds and flight angles to assess the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle," test lead Bernadine Juliano of the APL said in a statement on NASA's website.

"We completed more than 700 total runs, encompassing over 4,000 individual data points. All test objectives were successfully accomplished, and the data will help increase confidence in our simulation models on Earth before extrapolating to Titan conditions," Juliano said.

As per NASA, it only takes methane and nitrogen to "unleash a complex web of organic chemistry that makes Titan unique and interesting to scientists."

Given that microorganisms can survive the most extreme environments imaginable, scientists are yet to rule out the existence of exotic life forms that may survive the liquid methane environment.

Additionally, Titan's terrain as we know it is "eerily" similar to our planet Earth's. However, on closer inspection, "every familiar feature has an exotic trait".

The similarities don't end there. As per NASA, Titan is carved by huge flowing rivers and lakes that, instead of water, hold methane.

Furthermore, it has rocks that look like ours but are made of water ice that stays frozen because of the celestial body's cold weather.

Previously, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), a radio telescope observatory in Chile, scientists found C3H2, or cyclopropenylidene in Titan's atmosphere. This carbon-based molecule that has never been identified in any other atmosphere. Scientists believe that the find may be a precursor to more complex compounds that could form or feed possible life on Saturn's moon.

All these things point to the probability that Titan may hold fascinating secrets about alien life forms.

Curiosity rover identified specific landforms called bench-and-nose features; here steep and shallow slopes are called 'benches,' while shortened ridges are called 'noses'.&nbsp;

They form when sedimentary material laid down in channels by rivers is subsequently eroded by prevailing winds. These landforms suggest that rivers were more widespread than thought earlier.&nbsp;
