Last year, a staggering number of people — more than ever — died by suicide in the United States. As per provisional data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), figures dating back to at least 1941 revealed that in 2022, the highest-ever number of people killed themselves in the US.

The data found that there was a significant increase in suicides by people over 35 years of age. The rate was highest for people aged 75 and older.

Overall, the 49,449 suicides were "the highest number ever recorded in&nbsp;the United States,"&nbsp;as per the CDC.

However, the organisation adds, "The 2022 final number of suicides is likely to be higher as additional death&nbsp;certificates with pending causes of death may be determined to be suicides."

As per the report, in the US, suicides have risen "almost steadily" during the 21st century. Both males and females, across nearly every age and race and Hispanic-origin group, experienced the increase.

Owing to the disturbing trend, the US Surgeon General, in 2021, issued a call to&nbsp;action on a national strategy for suicide&nbsp;prevention as well as an advisory for&nbsp;youth mental health.

As per the analysis, "the nation's overall gun suicide rate increased 1.6 per cent, reaching an all-time high".

Subsequently, he admitted to engaging in necrophilia on many occasions. He confessed to abusing the bodies of many women he found in mortuaries. His victims ranged between the ages of nine and a hundred years.&nbsp;

A search of his home uncovered more than 800,000 images and 500 videos of his "persistent interest" in abusing, raping and murdering women.

For his shocking crimes, he will spend the rest of his life behind bars. He was given two life sentences for the murders. In addition, he was sentenced to 16 years behind bars for abusing corpses, so the 69-year-old will die in prison.&nbsp;

<h2>Inquiry findings</h2>

An inquiry into his crimes found that "there were missed opportunities to question Fuller's working practices".

The Guardian quotes Inquiry chair Sir Jonathan Michael as saying that the abuse "had caused shock and horror across our country and beyond".

"He routinely worked beyond his contracted hours, undertaking tasks in the mortuary that were not necessary or which should not have been carried out by someone with his chronic back problems. This was never properly questioned," he added.

Michael in the report released on Tuesday (Nov 28) said, "The offences that Fuller committed were truly shocking and he will never be released from prison."

He chalked up Fuller's barbarities to "failures of management, of governance, of regulation, failure to follow standard policies and procedures, together with a persistent lack of curiosity."

As per the report, there was "little regard" given to who was accessing the mortuary. It said that Fuller, who worked as the maintenance supervisor at hospitals, visited the mortuaries around 444 times in a year, yet it went "unnoticed and unchecked".

Talking to reporters, he also said&nbsp;senior bosses were allegedly "aware of problems in the running of the mortuary from as early as 2008".

<h2>How can such crimes be prevented?</h2>

The inquiry, as per BBC, has made 17 recommendations to prevent "similar atrocities". These include the installation of CCTV cameras in mortuaries and post-mortem rooms. Making it compulsory for maintenance staff to carry out tasks in these areas in pairs was also recommended.

Furthermore, it recommended that the "practice of leaving deceased people out of mortuary fridges overnight" or while maintenance is carried out should be put to an end.

Another inquiry to review how the deceased are cared for around the UK was launched in July and its findings are expected to be released in 2024.

Speaking at the opening of the summit, Ghana's President's Nana Akufo-Addo emphasised the staggering consequences of slavery. He said, "The entire period of slavery meant that our progress, economically, culturally, and psychologically, was stifled."

"There are legions of stories of families who were torn apart … You cannot quantify the effects of such tragedies, but they need to be recognised," he added.

He also said that the "entire continent of Africa deserves a formal apology from the European nations involved in the slave trade".

Northern Myanmar fighting displaces almost 50,000 civilians: UN

Indian capital New Delhi finally got a breather on Friday, as overnight rains cleared some of the toxic air that had been plaguing the city for days.

Delhi, till Thursday (Nov 9) was the most polluted city in the world. Early on Friday, rains brought a welcome respite, and the city saw its air quality index (AQI) improve. AQI levels fell to 127 from&nbsp;earlier hazardous levels of 400-500.&nbsp;

<h2>Indian capital's toxic air</h2>

During the past week, Delhi consistently recorded "hazardous" 400–500 levels of AQI, according to the Swiss group IQAir. After the rains somewhat cleared the air on Friday morning, New Delhi slipped to become the 10th most polluted&nbsp;city in the world. Meanwhile, India's Kolkata topped the global chart with an AQI of 303.

For about a week, the city topped the most polluted cities index and as worries of health problems were exacerbated, schools were shut, with an early winter break of nine days, from November 9 to 18, announced.

Owing to the health hazard, the Delhi government had also invoked Stage 4 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), a set of anti-pollution guidelines.&nbsp;

In the attack, the child's 32-year-old mother also suffered several stabbing wounds and had to be hospitalised.

Similarly, there have been reports of several disturbing spillovers and prejudices against Muslims and Jews. This includes reports of university students beating up their classmates, tearing down posters of Israeli children taken hostage, and more.

Varun Raj Pucha, a 24-year-old Indian-origin student who on October 29th was stabbed at a public gym in Valparaiso, Indiana, has succumbed to his injuries.

Pucha, who was a student of computer science at Valparaiso University, died at a local hospital on Wednesday (Nov 8).

<h2>A 'devastating loss'</h2>

In a statement, Valparaiso University announced the passing and said: "It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Varun Raj Pucha. Our campus community has lost one of its own, and our thoughts and prayers go out to Varun's family and friends as we mourn this devastating loss."

An NWIU Times report previously identified the attacker as 24-year-old Jordan Andrad, who was detained by the police soon after the attack.

The attacker, Andrad, is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.&nbsp;

As per the charging document, upon arrest, Andrad&nbsp;told the police that he had requested a massage at the gym on the morning of the incident.&nbsp;

Upon entering the massage room, he encountered the other man (Varun), whom he described as "a little weird" and potentially threatening.&nbsp;

Andrad&nbsp;claimed that he reacted the "right way" in response to the perceived threat.&nbsp;He reportedly also told the police that Varun "was going to assassinate him" and that the attack was in defence.

The police reported that "Andrad&nbsp;then described (Varun) as a threat to him, so he 'just reacted'."

However, when police talked to the gym 'Planet Fitness' staff they "indicated that (the victim) was a regular gym member and generally kept to himself, was quiet and reserved, nothing indicating that he was 'creepy'."

In his statement to the police, the assailant said that Varun, the victim, remained seated throughout the incident and only made physical contact to push him (the attacker) away after he had initiated the attack.

<h2>They're real: Anthropologist</h2>

Talking to Reuters, Anthropologist Roger Zuniga of San Luis Gonzaga National University in Ica, Peru, supported the findings, and said "they're real".

Emphasising that the beings "absolutely no human intervention in the physical and biological formation," he said he didn't know the origin of their potentially extraterrestrial lineage.

Zuniga, along with 11 university researchers, has also signed a letter attesting to the realness of the mummies. However, it also made clear that they were not implying that they were "extraterrestrial".

Nathan Woodyard, a Colorado police officer accused of killing Elijah McClain, a 23-year-old Black man has been acquitted of all charges by a Colorado court. McClain died after being put in a chokehold and the administration of a powerful sedative.

Following the verdict, the victim's mother said she no longer has faith in the justice system.

As per CNN, the Aurora police officer was found guilty on all charges — reckless manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide, by a Colorado jury.

Talking to KUSA on Monday, Sheneen McClain, Elijah's mother, expressed her disappointment in the justice system and said the verdict "lets us down, not just people of colour, it lets down everybody."&nbsp;

"Nobody did. So it's just unfortunate that they are placing the blame and passing the buck."

<h2>What happened in 2019?</h2>

Woodyard, as per an NBC News report, was the first officer to confront the victim McClain.

At the time of the incident, McClain was walking home from a convenience store in the Denver suburb of Aurora.&nbsp;

The police officer was responding to a 911 call by a 17-year-old caller who had reported that the black man — who was wearing a ski mask and was listening to music, and dancing as he walked — as suspicious.

Prosecutors allege that Woodyard tackled McClain within eight seconds of exiting the patrol car — without introducing himself or explaining the reason for stopping him. They contend that officers used excessive force against the victim, putting him in carotid holds.

"Elijah McClain was walking home, he was dancing. As he told the defendant, he was stopping the music to listen," said Colorado Assistant Attorney General Jason Slothouber.&nbsp;

"There was no need for this escalation of violence," he emphasised.

Woodyard's neck hold as per NBC rendered McCain temporarily unconscious. Prosecutors also allege that McCain was injected with a fatal overdose of ketamine by paramedics. Later, the 23-year-old threw up in his mask and repeatedly said "I can't breathe" but the officers failed to check his vital signs. He suffered a cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital, where he was declared brain-dead. He died three days.

CNN reports that Dr Roger Mitchell Jr., a forensic pathologist who reviewed the victim's autopsy, during the trial testified that McClain's cause of death was "complications following acute ketamine administration during violent subdual and restraint by law enforcement, emergency response personnel."&nbsp;

He also testified that there was a "direct causal link" between the officers' actions and Elijah's death.

Previously in September, two other officers - Randy Roedema and Jason Rosenblatt were tried jointly. Rosenblatt was also acquitted of all charges, while Roedema was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide and third-degree assault. He is due to be sentenced in January. &nbsp;

Roman actress Sibilla Barbieri has ended her life in Switzerland. The 58-year-old actor and director last week chose assisted suicide across the border&nbsp;after authorities denied her request in her home country, Italy.

<h2>Why was Sibilla Barbieri seeking assisted suicide?</h2>

As per Vanity Fair Italy, the actress was suffering from terminal cancer for 10 years. Barbieri was completely dependent on oxygen therapy and pain medications, which, if interrupted, would have led to a painful death.

Given the severity of her condition, she had requested assisted suicide back in July, but her application was rejected.

In mid-September, Barbieri's health company replied to her request, stating that the medical team had considered that the woman lacked the requirement of dependence on life-sustaining treatment.

Talking to the press, Filomena Gallo, the actress' lawyer, revealed that Barbieri was told that her "current conditions are not consistent with intolerable physical suffering".

The healthcare provider also said that her condition did not fulfil conditions established by the Constitutional Court in 2019 for such cases.

<h2>How the suffering woman chose to end her life</h2>

Denied the request, Barbieri chose to end her suffering in a foreign land. She was accompanied to Switzerland by her son and Marco Perduca, of the Luca Coscioni Association, which works for human rights and civil liberties.

In a video&nbsp;statement addressed to 'all politicians' posted 19 hours ago by&nbsp;Luca Coscioni, Barbieri alleged of, "very serious discrimination between cancer patients and those who also find themselves in other non-terminal conditions."

<h2>Italy's assisted suicide law</h2>

Why was Sibilla Barbieri seeking assisted suicide? As per Vanity Fair Italy, the actress was suffering from terminal cancer for 10 years. Barbieri was completely dependent on oxygen therapy and pain medications, which, if interrupted, would have led to a painful death. Given the severity of her condition, she had requested assisted suicide back in July, but her application was rejected. In mid-September, Barbieri's health company replied to her request, stating that the medical team had considered that the woman lacked the requirement of dependence on life-sustaining treatment. The healthcare provider also said that her condition did not fulfil conditions established by the Constitutional Court in 2019 for such cases. How the suffering woman chose to end her life Denied the request, Barbieri chose to end her suffering in a foreign land. She was accompanied to Switzerland by her son and Marco Perduca, of the Luca Coscioni Association, which works for human rights and civil liberties. In a video statement addressed to 'all politicians' posted 19 hours ago by Luca Coscioni, Barbieri alleged of, "very serious discrimination between cancer patients and those who also find themselves in other non-terminal conditions." This is another serious discrimination which the State must remedy," she added. × Italy's assisted suicide law In Italy, active euthanasia is a crime and a punishable offence under Article 579 (Murder of a consenting person) or Article 580 (Instigation or aid to suicide) of the penal code. However, terminally ill patients can request assisted suicide, i.e. indirect help of a doctor to die. This was introduced in 2019 after a landmark judgement involving Fabiano Antoniani aka DJ Fabo, who, after a major road accident, was left tetraplegic — unable to voluntarily move the upper and lower parts of the body. Marco Cappato, former member of the European Parliament, assisted DJ Fabo in availing medically assisted suicide, by driving him to a Swiss clinic. Afterwards, Cappato was put on trial, but the Italian Constitutional Court urged the Parliament to decriminalise assisted suicide and the former MP was acquitted.
