Nepal flood tragedy: A stark warning about climate change

Chinese state media, citing China’s Ministry of Water Resources, warns of an imminent catastrophic hazard along the China Nepal border. A massive barrier lake has formed near the confluence of the Chhochen Khola and Purepu Tsangpo rivers in Nepal, holding an estimated two million cubic meters of water. The lake is already overflowing. Over the next three days, an additional three million cubic meters of water is projected to surge into the basin, escalating the risk of a disastrous breach to critical levels.

A devastating flash flood along the Nepal-Tibet border has left at least 320 people dead and hundreds missing, triggering renewed concerns over glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in the Himalayas. Experts are examining whether unstable glacial lakes, climate change, and the constantly shifting Himalayan terrain played a role in the disaster. The tragedy has also placed Chinese infrastructure and construction activities near the Tibetan border under scrutiny. Rescue teams continue search operations as affected communities struggle with widespread destruction, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted livelihoods.

Nepal has faced a devastating cycle of earthquakes, floods and landslides for decades. From the catastrophic 2015 Gorkha earthquake that killed more than 9,000 people to the 2023 Jajarkot earthquake that claimed 154 lives and damaged over 19,000 homes, disasters have repeatedly tested the Himalayan nation. The latest deadly floods have once again raised alarm, highlighting Nepal's vulnerability to extreme weather and seismic activity. As the country confronts yet another tragedy, we look back at some of Nepal's deadliest natural disasters and the destruction they left behind.

In a strange incident, an elephant killed two people 14 years after killing two other members of the same family. The shocking part is that the family had relocated 17 kilometres away, and the beast still managed to find them. According to a report by Kathmandu Post, Dhurbe trampled Shanichara Bote's father and mother, Budhiram and Jharali, on Dec 16, 2012, near the Chitwan National Park. The danger posed by the rogue elephant forced the family to shift to Jagatpur after crossing two rivers.
