Nepal is facing the threat of fresh flooding following deadly disasters that have caused destruction and raised concerns over public safety. Authorities remain on alert as the risk of further flooding threatens vulnerable areas.

Nepal floods: Nepal faces fresh flood threat after deadly disasters

Severe flooding in Nepal has renewed concerns over the growing threat of glacial lake outburst floods across the Himalayas, with nearly 300,000 people potentially exposed to the risks. Rising temperatures and melting glaciers are increasing pressure on fragile mountain environments, raising fears that glacial lakes could overflow or suddenly release massive volumes of water.

Nepal has formed a seven-member expert panel to investigate what really triggered the devastating August 26 Bhotekoshi flash flood, which caused massive loss of life and severely damaged hydropower infrastructure. Led by water policy expert Debesh Belbase, the team includes specialists in hydrology, glaciology, geology, remote sensing and disaster risk reduction. They'll trace the disaster from its source through the Bhotekoshi-Lhende river system, examining whether cascading geological, glacial and hydrological hazards, possibly linked to climate change, were behind the tragedy.

It has been nearly three weeks since catastrophic flash floods, triggered by a glacial mountain collapse, tore through northern Nepal. In the wake of the disaster, 1,385 lives have been confirmed lost, with thousands more still unaccounted for. Watch for full on-ground updates and humanitarian analysis.

A leopard rescued from the Dhung Khola area of Nepal on September 10 broke through its cage, attacking the handler who was loading it into another enclosure. A video shows the leopard inside a cage placed on what looks like a small truck at Lamjung Division Forest Office in Besisahar. It was in a controlled condition, meaning it had been tranquilised. Yet it managed to escape. Two men can be seen lifting the cage from the vehicle, putting it on the floor before placing it into a larger cage. The man tries to push the leopard off him as another person hits it with a rod. The video then shows the leopard roaming outside the building, trying to climb a pillar, supposedly in a bid to escape. The staff used barriers and cages to recapture the leopard. As news of the leopard spread, people started gathering outside the office to see the drama. It is now known whether the leopard escaped or was captured. The attack injured 57-year-old forest guard Buddhi Jang Gurung.
Leopards and other wildlife often creep into human areas
In Nepal, wildlife often wanders into human settlements, and authorities and local forest officers regularly respond to such incidents. The animals also get trapped in snares or fall into pits near rivers, streams, and rural corridors. When people come across the animal in places where it shouldn't be, people tell the police and the Division Forest Office. A technical team from the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) reach the spot and tranquilises the animal. They are assessed for any injuries, and the healthy leopards are translocated and released into protected national parks or dense forest reserves. The injured animals are brought to wildlife rescue facilities for treatment.

The leopard had been tranquilised and yet managed to open the gate of the cage. It repeatedly attacked a man as others tried to get it off him. As news of the escaped leopard spread, people started gathering for safety and to see whether the animal was caught.

For thousands of families across Nepal, the search for loved ones is far from over. While rescue teams have managed to save more than 13,000 people, nearly 5,000 remain missing after catastrophic floods and landslides swept through large parts of the country. The rising death toll highlights the scale of the tragedy, as emergency workers continue round-the-clock operations in challenging conditions. The disaster has left communities shattered and sparked a massive humanitarian response across the region.

Two hydropower workers were pulled alive on Friday from a tunnel buried by debris in Nepal, a rare ray of hope on the tenth day of rescue efforts after catastrophic Himalayan flooding. Rescuers cheered as one man was pulled through a muddy opening.
He was helped to his feet by rescuers, and later carried on the backs of the emergency workers, raising his hand as they rushed him towards a helicopter. Rescuers called it a "miracle" after the August 26 glacial and mountain collapse on the China-Nepal border killed at least 1,325 people and left more than 5,500 missing.
