Nepal's devastating floods have evolved into the biggest challenge of Prime Minister Balen Shah's tenure. With the death toll surpassing 1,000 and thousands still missing, the government faces immense pressure to lead rescue, relief and reconstruction efforts. Rescue teams continue searching for missing residents and trapped hydropower workers as damaged infrastructure hampers operations. The disaster is testing both the government's crisis response and its long-term vision for recovery.

Nepal floods: Nepal's Prime Minister Balen Shah faces biggest test amid devastating floods

Nepal is facing one of its worst flood disasters in recent history. Rescue teams are racing against time to reach workers trapped inside tunnels as swollen rivers continue to devastate communities. Eyewitnesses describe horrifying scenes of bodies being swept away in raging floodwaters, while dozens of victims have been recovered from homes and riverbanks. Prime Minister Balendra Shah says over 11,000 people have been rescued and power has been restored in some areas, but the humanitarian crisis remains severe as the death toll climbs past 1,127.

The UN has issued a stark warning that the Himalayan region faces severe risks of future glacial floods as the death toll from last week's catastrophic disaster in Nepal surpassed 1,000. Senior UN official Kanni Wignaraja warned that millions living downstream along major river systems face life-threatening risks, with vital hydroelectric projects and entire communities endangered. Triggered by the massive collapse of a glacier near the Langtang Lirung peak, the resulting outburst flooded the Trishuli River valley, exposing the extreme vulnerability of Himalayan infrastructure. Watch for key insights into the climate crisis threatening Asia's water towers.

The death toll from devastating Himalayan glacial floods in Nepal and Tibet has reached at least 1,050 with nearly 4,500 people still missing after a gigantic wave of freezing water, rocks and debris roared downstream on August 26. Rescue teams from Nepal, India and China are in a desperate race against time, digging, drilling and blasting through debris to free dozens of hydropower workers trapped in tunnels.

Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah has issued an urgent call for global climate action after last week's devastating Himalayan flood killed at least 939 people and left nearly 4,500 missing. Calling it "not an ordinary" disaster, Shah said it was driven by climate change and urged Nepal to raise the issue strongly with the international community. He stressed the need to protect Himalayan communities, warning that the risks facing the region are growing as glaciers melt and extreme weather events intensify.

Nepal floods: Hundreds believed to be struck in devastated hydropower stations

Nepal’s deadly floods have raised difficult questions about climate change, disaster preparedness and accountability. While PM Balendra Shah is calling for international action, Nepal must also confront its own role in managing risks across the fragile Himalayas.

As India continues to be among the first responders in times of crisis, the disaster also highlights a larger reality: the Himalayas do not follow political borders, and disasters upstream can affect communities across the region.

A deadly flash flood near Nepal's border with Tibet on Wednesday may have been triggered when the lower part of a glacier broke off and ‌crashed on to the valley floor hundreds of metres below, experts said citing satellite imagery from Planet Labs. Around 4,200 people are still missing. It was not clear what caused the glacier to collapse, but Nepali officials have pointed to an earthquake in the region minutes earlier as a possibility.

Nepal floods: Efforts intensified to free workers trapped in hydropower tunnels

Nepal continues to face a devastating flood crisis, five days after a massive wall of mud and water tore through areas near the Nepal-China border.

The reported death toll has climbed to over 900, while around 2,500 people remain unaccounted for. Rescue teams are working through thick debris, destroyed settlements and swollen river valleys in an increasingly difficult search for survivors.

A major focus of the operation is Nepal’s hydropower sector, where hundreds of workers are feared missing. Authorities say around 933 hydropower workers have been reported missing since the floods struck, with more than 100 workers potentially still trapped inside tunnels. Rescue teams are drilling access points, pumping air into tunnels and using cameras to search for signs of life.

Heartbreaking images have also emerged from the disaster zone, including the rescue of a young girl reportedly trapped beneath rubble for days.

The catastrophic Nepal floods were linked to the collapse of a massive section of glacier near the Nepal–China border. Satellite analysis indicated that around 0.2 sq km of ice plunged approximately 1.2 km vertically, sending ice, rocks and sediment into the valley. The impact helped trigger a powerful debris flow and sudden flooding along the Lhende Khola and Bhotekoshi rivers. Scientists say recent snowmelt and unusually warm conditions may have contributed to the glacier’s instability.

The devastating floods in Nepal have left hundreds of people missing, including a significant number of tourists from India. Many Indian nationals were travelling through the affected areas when the flash floods struck, with rescue teams continuing efforts to locate and assist those unaccounted for.
