US: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi makes first public remarks since assault on her husband Paul

On Thursday, United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that her husband Paul Pelosi has been released from a San Francisco hospital and is recovering from his injuries including a skull fracture and other “serious injuries” he sustained. This comes six days after he was brutally attacked by a hammer in his San Francisco home.

“The Pelosi family is thankful for the beautiful outpouring of love, support and prayers from around the world,” said the speaker in a statement issued by her office. She added, “Paul is grateful to the 911 operator, emergency responders, trauma care team, ICU staff, and the entire ZSFGH medical staff for their excellent and compassionate life-saving treatment he received after the violent assault in our home.”

The 82-year-old, “remains under doctors’ care as he continues to progress on a long recovery process and convalescence,” the statement added. In a separate statement last week by a spokesman for Nancy Pelosi, Drew Hammill, said that Paul Pelosi had sustained injuries and required surgery to “repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands.”

This comes days after he was allegedly attacked by an assailant later identified as David DePape who recently pleaded not guilty in a San Francisco court. The court documents also show that he entered their San Francisco house looking for the House Speaker to “seriously harm her”.

In another recent development, the man accused could be deported after he is released from custody, said the Department of Homeland Security, on Thursday. The man accused of attacking the United States senior politician and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, has pleaded not guilty on charges including attempt to murder and so on, in a San Francisco court, on Tuesday. This was the suspect’s first court appearance since the incident took place on Friday.

The accused, David Wayne DePape’s attorney and San Francisco deputy public defender, Adam Lipson, speaking to the reporters outside the court said that there are a number of factors that need to be accounted for in his client’s defence ranging from his “vulnerability” to “political misinformation” and mental state.

Following the hearing, Judge Diane Northway of the Superior Court in San Francisco also denied DePape bail, who is also to remain in custody at least until a formal detention hearing is held.

According to reports, DePape has been arraigned under the charges of attempted murder, assault, burglary, elder abuse, false imprisonment and threatening a US official. Court documents show that he was planning to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage and break her “her kneecaps” if she “lied” to him.

The court filings also said that the prosecutors detailed the attack and said that DePape’s intention “could not have been clearer.” The San Francisco District Attorney, Brooke Jenkins in the document wrote about how the accused “forced his way into the Pelosi home” with the intention to take House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hostage who is third in line to the presidency, to “seriously harm her”.

The prosecutors have also called for a prison sentence of 13 years to life, based on the state charges while DePape’s attorney, Lipson said, “we deny the allegations.” The court filing also said that DePape allegedly told officers and first responders that was done with the “lies coming out of Washington DC” and that he didn’t want to hurt Paul Pelosi but was on a “suicide mission”.

Morning news brief: PM Modi to visit Morbi, Paul Pelosi's attacker charged and more

The attack on US speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband has shocked the United States and now the real intent behind the attack is slowly being revealed.

United States | FBI: Attacker wanted to kidnap Nancy Pelosi

The man accused of breaking into US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's home in San Francisco and hitting her husband with a hammer was raised in Canada, later became a nudist activist there, and promoted far-right conspiracy theories before being connected to the attack, according to family members who spoke to CNN.

According to his stepfather Gene DePape, David DePape, the 42-year-old suspect charged with attempting to kill Paul Pelosi, was born and raised in Powell River, British Columbia, but moved to California around 20 years ago to pursue a romantic relationship.

Gene DePape (stepfather) and Mark DePape (uncle), told CNN that he has since become distant from his family. However, news articles in the San Francisco Chronicle mentioned David DePape because he shared a three-bedroom Victorian apartment in Berkeley with Oxane "Gypsy" Taub, a well-known nudist campaigner, her three kids, and her fiancé Jaymz Smith.

At a wedding they intended to hold on the steps of San Francisco's city hall, Smith and Taub had requested DePape, who was described as a hemp jewellery artisan, to be the best man.

Taub was found guilty of a number of offences, including attempted kidnapping and stalking, last year.

DePape said he also went to the streets with activists who opposed a successful attempt to outlaw public nudity in San Francisco. DePape was listed years ago in voting records as a supporter of the Green Party.

Gene DePape and Mark DePape claimed that David recently kept up a Facebook account with numerous postings filled with conspiracies.

The account, which was deleted by Facebook's owner Meta on Friday, contained links to My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell's videos that made the erroneous assertion that Democratic challenger Joe Biden will defeat Republican President Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

He also allegedly had a blog with the domain godisloving.wordpress.com, which was also disabled on Friday and where he often posted rants about the "ruling class."

According to San Francisco police, DePape committed a targeted act on Friday when he allegedly broke into the 82-year-old Pelosis' house. He allegedly struck Paul Pelosi with a hammer while yelling, "Where is Nancy, where is Nancy?"

The speaker wasn't at home at the time; instead, she was in Washington, DC, where she always travels with a security detail.

After telling the intruder that he had to use the restroom, Pelosi called 911 on his phone, which was charging there, and requested that cops come check on him, according to Politico.

At around 2.30 am on Friday, when police arrived at the Pelosis' home, they saw Paul Pelosi and DePape both grabbing at a hammer. Officers immediately arrested DePape, who had apparently planned to tie up Paul Pelosi until the speaker of the House returned home.

Top US Democrat Nancy Pelosi's husband attacked with hammer at home

Comparing Taiwanese independence to a ''charging rhino'' that must be stopped, China's foreign minister Wang Yi blamed the US for speeding it along.

Highlighting that the legislation under consideration by US lawmakers threatens the foundation of US-China ties, Wang said Beijing will not tolerate the Taiwanese independence bid.

Calling the ties between the US and China at a “low ebb,” Wang said voices advocating the independence of Taiwan have grown because of Washington's support.

During a speech at the Asia Society in New York, Wang said “We have always worked with the greatest sincerity and effort to pursue peaceful reunification, but we will never tolerate any activity aimed at secession.”

The term “grey rhinos”, which includes shadow banking, property bubbles and local government debts, has been used by Chinese authorities in the past to refer to high-impact financial hazards that risk being overlooked.

Since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan in August, relations between Beijing and Washington have deteriorated further.

Triggering the Chinese army’s most provocative drills around the islands in decades, it has heightened tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

Saying a legal change is unnecessary because she already leads a sovereign nation, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen’s party has avoided overt moves toward a formal break.

With about a quarter supporting independence at some point, government surveys show that most Taiwanese residents prefer maintaining the status quo.

When asked if the US would defend Taiwan if it is invaded by China, President Joe Biden answered ''yes'' during an interview with “60 Minutes” that aired earlier this week.

During a speech at the Asia Society in New York, Wang said “We have always worked with the greatest sincerity and effort to pursue peaceful reunification, but we will never tolerate any activity aimed at secession.” × The term “grey rhinos”, which includes shadow banking, property bubbles and local government debts, has been used by Chinese authorities in the past to refer to high-impact financial hazards that risk being overlooked. Days after deadly clashes broke out between Armenia and Azerbaijan that killed over 215 people, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Armenia on Saturday for a three-day official visit. In the process, she became the highest ranking US official to visit the Western Asian country since it gained independence in 1991. Taking to Twitter, Pelosi informed about her visit and stated it was a symbol of Washington's commitment to a peaceful, prosperous, and democratic Armenia. "Today, I am leading a Congressional delegation to Armenia to highlight the strong commitment of the United States to security, economic prosperity, and democratic governance in Armenia and the Caucasus region." she tweeted. Adding that we shouldn't forget the Armenian genocide, Pelosi said, “It is the moral duty of all to never forget: an obligation that has taken on heightened urgency as atrocities are perpetrated around the globe, including by Russia against Ukraine.” Reportedly, Pelosi was received by the head of the Armenian National Assembly Alen Simonyan at the International Airport outside of Yerevan. Simonyan remained optimistic that Pelosi's visit will play a big role in ensuring Yerevan's security. WATCH | World at War | Episode 20: Armenia and Azerbaijan on the brink of war over Nagorno-Karabakh × Pelosi's visit comes at an incredibly delicate time. For the first time since Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a 44-day war in 2020, they have come close to engaging in another war. As reported extensively by WION, the clashes broke out earlier this week on Tuesday over hostilities related to the decades-old Nagorno-Karabakh territory dispute. After over 215 were killed in the clash, Russia stepped in and reportedly brokered ceasefire between the two nations. "We call on the parties to refrain from further escalation of the situation, exercise restraint and strictly observe the ceasefire in accordance with the trilateral statements of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia of November 9, 2020, January 11 and November 26, 2021." a Russian foreign ministry statement said. Azerbaijan has long claimed it will retake the territory, which is internationally recognised as Azerbaijani. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

In a rare move amid the escalating hostilities between Taiwan and China, on Tuesday, Taipei fired warning shots at a Chinese drone that had buzzed into its territory.

This comes as the president of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, recently declared that she had instructed the military to take "strong countermeasures" against what she called Chinese provocations.

Tsai criticised China earlier on Tuesday when touring the military forces on the Penghu islands for its use of drones and other forms of "grey zone" warfare.

In an exclusive conversation with WION's managing editor Palki Sharma Upadhyay, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has said that US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan brought the island closer to the precipice of war with China.

Rudd, who is currently the global president of the Asia Society, said, ''China is strengthening itself both militarily and financially in terms of a greater degree of self-reliance before it rolls the dice on Taiwan.''

The 64-year-old highlighted that ''Chinese President Xi Jinping wants to be seen as the man who completed Mao's revolution in Communist history.''

''The problem with Pelosi's visit to Taipei is that it fools around with the symbols of One-China policy, and if the US wanted to unnecessarily create an early tripwire for crisis escalation conflict and war by highly symbolic acts, it has brought Taiwan closer to the precipice of war.''

According to Rudd, if China successfully takes control over Taiwan, it will be emboldened and Jinping will take advantage and double down.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband Paul gets 5 days in jail for drunk driving

As US lawmakers led by senator Ed Markey wrapped up the second US congressional delegation just weeks after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the Chinese daily 'Global Times' accused the US media of 'historical nihilism ' by distorting Taiwan's history.

"Washington elites fantasize about crossing China's red line using "salami slicing" approach, but the existence of "Taiwan secessionist" regime is the salami that will be eventually cut by history." said the Chinese mouthpiece.

In military parlance, 'salami slicing', also known as 'cabbage strategy' refers to the divide and conquer process of threats and alliances used to overcome opposition and the means by which, the aggressor can influence and ultimately dominate a landscape.

In China's context, salami slicing refers to its strategy of acquiring new territories, at the expense of its neighbours. The Doklam standoff, the capture of Aksai-chin, and the annexation of Tibet are only a few out of many, yet glaring examples of China's aggressive foreign policy and expansionist policy.

In 1996, a United States Institute of Peace report on the territorial disputes in the South China Sea wrote, "[…] analysts point to Chinese "salami tactics," in which China is said to test the other claimants through aggressive actions, then back off when it meets significant resistance."

The term was coined by Stalinist dictator Mátyás Rákosi during the 1940s. He used the term to justify the actions of the Hungarian Communist Party to grab complete power in Hungary.

Tibet was an independent state after the fall of the Qing dynasty. In 1950, the People's Liberation Army entered Tibet and occupied the entire kingdom militarily. China seized Paracel Islands in 1974 from Vietnam and built Sansha City on the island to legitimise its illegal claim.

The acquisition of the Paracel Islands was followed by the capture of the Johnson Reef from Vietnam in 1988, the Mischief Reef in 1995, and the Scarborough Shoal in 2012; both from the Philippines in the South China Sea.

Recent skirmishes include the dispute over Senkaku islands, which China calls 'Diaoyu' and has been regularly sailing its coast guard into Japanese territorial waters.

The presence of more than 200 Chinese fishing vessels in the Whitsun reef caused the Philippines and Vietnam to file diplomatic protests against China, with the Philippines alleging that this 'is a prelude to a Chinese takeover of the maritime feature'.

The buck doesn't only stop here. Other than territorial claims, economic coercions like debt-trap diplomacy is also a feature of the modus operandi. Pakistan, Tajikistan, Malaysia, and several other African countries are overwhelmed with unsustainable loans and have been forced to cede strategic leverage to china.

The docking of Yuan Wang 5, a vessel capable of extensive surveillance at the Hambantota port of Sri Lanka proves China's financial and strategic muscle. The Yuan Wang 5, a ballistic missile and satellite tracking ship is a security concern for India as several ports in Tamil Nadu, Kerala will be on the ship's radar once it docks at Hambantota.

Sri Lanka tried, without success to ward off the ship but instead had to defer the dates of docking. Facing what is arguably its worst economic crisis, Sri Lanka can only be bailed out by IMF loans and a debt restructuring program, but Beijing so far has refused to reduce its loans.

The divide and conquer tactic is effective over a longer period of time as it presents the target with only two choices: either silently suffering China's salami slicing, or risking an expensive and dangerous war with China. The absence of strong responses from China's adversaries had also facilitated its takeover of territories, especially in the South China sea.

However, China's recent expeditions have triggered strong responses from its adversaries, notably in the case of Taiwan. Countries are increasingly seeking to form partnerships to counter China’s growing power.

For example, The Quad, the Australia-Japan-India-US alliance, seems to have been revitalised. The rise in Defence expenditure is also a growing response. Taiwan, Japan and Australia have increased defence budgets with Japan investing in the development of stealth fighters and long-range missiles. The US has also increased its presence in the Indo pacific.

China has said it will be blacklisting seven 'secessionist' Taiwan officials over their alleged support for the self-ruled island’s independence. As its adversaries adopt a resoluteness to counter the security policies, it is to be seen whether China's salami slicing will be effective anymore because of its bolder and at times clumsy moves which have resulted in thick slices unable to cut through.

China's salami-slicing tactics going wrong?

A second US delegation has arrived in Taiwan on an unannounced two-day visit. They are all set to meet Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-wen on Monday.

This is the second time that the delegation from the US Congress arrived in Taipei in a month, after Speaker House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the region, which created a huge uproar in China.

According to the Taiwanese media, the new five-member delegation arrived for the talks, but details of the meeting were not immediately released. The delegation was due to depart later Monday on a US government plane.

Massachusetts Democratic Senator Ed Markey, who is part of the delegation, in a statement, said that the US team is visiting “the self-governing island in an effort to reaffirm the United States' support for Taiwan" and "will encourage stability and peace across the Taiwan Strait," reports CNN.

The delegation includes Democratic Reps. John Garamendi, Alan Lowenthal and Don Beyer, and Republican Rep. Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the delegation will meet with Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and will also hold discussions with the Taiwanese parliament's Foreign Affairs and National Defence committee on security and trade issues, reports CNN.

US lawmakers arrive in Taiwan days after Nancy Pelosi's visit angered China

Just days after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, China conducted a series of military drills around the island, which it claims as its own. Speaking about the Chinese retaliatory drills on Wednesday, Pelosi said the US could not permit China to normalise the new level of pressure on Taiwan that it asserted with days of military drills.

As per a Reuters report, speaking at a press conference alongside other four Democratic House members who accompanied her on the Asia visit, Pelosi said: "What we saw with China is that they were trying to establish sort of a new normal. And we just can't let that happen".

'Who cares?', Nancy Pelosi laughs at China's decision to sanction her and her family

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Tuesday had a slip of tongue — or did she mean it? — as she called China ‘one of the freest societies in the world’ in one of the first interviews since she returned from her controversial trip to Taiwan.

Reportedly, in an interview with NBC’s ‘TODAY’ show, Pelosi not only put her weight behind the ‘one China’ policy but also made the unfortunate gaffe that has caught the internet’s attention.

“We still support the ‘one China’ policy, we go there to acknowledge the status quo is what our policy is, there is nothing disruptive about that. It was only about saying, China is one of the freest societies in the world, don’t take it from me, that’s from Freedom House, it’s a strong democracy, courageous people,” said Pelosi.

However, soon after Pelosi’s gaffe, Drew Hammill, her deputy chief of staff took to Twitter to clear the air and present her original stance.

“The Speaker is referencing Taiwan. The Speaker’s record of speaking out against the Chinese Communist Party for 35 years in the Congress is unsurpassed,” tweeted Hammill.

As reported by WION, Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan became a flashpoint between US and China. Immediately after landing in Taipei, Pelosi stated that US was not contradicting any longstanding policy by visiting Taiwan.

However, China took offence to the visit and started with its most-extensive military drill surrounding the island nation. The four-day exercise ended on Sunday but Beijing quickly announced that more such exercises were in the pipeline.

Nancy Pelosi’s tongue slip? Calls China one of the ‘freest’ societies in the world

Taiwanese foreign minister Joseph Wu on Tuesday accused China of using air and sea drills encircling the island to prepare for an invasion and to change the status quo in the Asia-Pacific region.

"China has used the drills and its military playbook to prepare for the invasion of Taiwan," Wu said while addressing a press conference in Taipei, reports AFP.

He added, "It is conducting large-scale military exercises and missile launches, as well as cyber-attacks, a disinformation campaign and economic coercion in order to weaken public morale in Taiwan."

The minister also condemned China of continuing with its drills on Monday despite assuring that it would end a day earlier. He said that the PLA’s military exercise hindered one of the busiest shipping and air routes in the world.

Wu's press conference came hours after the Taiwanese military held its own live-fire drill to prepare against a potential invasion of the island.

Taiwan's Eighth Army Corps spokesman Lou Woei-jye said the military exercise began in the southern county of Pingtung shortly after 0040 GMT with the firing of target flares and artillery.

The military drill is expected to end at around 0130 GMT, he added.

Taipei's drills, which will again take place on Thursday, include the deployment of hundreds of troops and about 40 howitzers, the army said.

Though Taipei’s drills came hours after China ended their war games, Lou maintained that the military exercise was taking place as scheduled and not being held in response to China's exercises.

Taiwan routinely conducts military drills simulating a Chinese invasion. Last month, the island practised repelling attacks from the sea in a "joint interception operation" as part of its largest annual exercises.

Meanwhile, it comes days after China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA) began conducting military drills encircling Taiwan last Thursday in a furious response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island, the most high-level from the US to Taiwan in 25 years. The visit angered China as it saw the visit as a violation of the “One China Policy”.

The war games focused on six zones that essentially encircled Taiwan, restricting access to civilian ships and aircraft in the area, as forces conducted live-fire drills and missile launches.
