The trend continued in the next two ballots where McCarthy received as many as 20 no-votes from his own side. The likes of Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, and Matt Gaetz have been the loud voices objecting to McCarthy's endorsement as the Republican nominee since November. “It’s true we struggle with trust with Mr. McCarthy because time and again his viewpoints, his positions, they shift like sands underneath you. If you want to drain the swamp, you cannot put the biggest alligator in charge of the exercise," Gaetz had remarked ahead of the voting. The role of a speaker is critical for the government in Washington to function since not only will the lawmaker preside over the lower chamber of Congress they would also be next in line for the presidency. Typically, a speaker is elected at the beginning of a new Congress, however, the House can elect a new one if the incumbent dies, resigns or is removed from office, said a report by Associated Press. &nbsp;

Additionally, the chamber cannot be organised until a speaker who is to preside over it is chosen, therefore, the vote to choose a speaker will be the first one taken once the lawmakers convene for the session on January 3 even before the new and returning members of both parties are sworn in.&nbsp;

The speaker has “massive influence over what sorts of bills and amendments get voted on in Congress”, said Christian Fong, a political science professor at the University of Michigan, to Al Jazeera. He added that this also gives them a significant amount of control over what becomes a law in the upcoming session.&nbsp;

How does the voting take place?

Additionally, the California Republican faces a number of critics who want change in the way the House operates and have long complained that the structure gives too much power to leaders and argued for changes which would make small groups of dissenters obstruct and change legislation, reported the New York Times.&nbsp;

McCarthy currently faces at least a dozen lawmakers who would choose anyone else but him which has left him scrambling for votes at the last minute&nbsp;and negotiating with the opposing lawmakers on concessions which may dilute his powers, should he take the office of the speaker,&nbsp;in the upcoming session. The 42-year-old accused has pleaded not guilty and denied all allegations, said San Francisco District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, in a statement.&nbsp;

According to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court, the attack against 82-year-old Paul Pelosi took place when the intruder looking for the Speaker, who was in Washington DC at the time, instead confronted her husband who was eventually able to call the police. The court documents from last month also show that DePape entered their San Francisco house looking for the House Speaker to “seriously harm her”.&nbsp;

US: Suspect in Paul Pelosi attack pleads not guilty on state charges

Outgoing US House of Representatives&nbsp;Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday lashed out at a reporter while addressing her weekly press conference after the latter questioned the speaker if she will be completing her two-year term.

Pelosi called the question 'a waste of my time'. In the press conference, the Democrat said that this 'may be the last' leadership press conference by her. Last month, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries was officially elected by her party, after pressurising Pelosi for years to step aside and make way for a new generation.

Still, Pelosi was able to comfortably clinch victory in the election from California Bay Area district.

The journalist, however, did not give up and once again clamoured to ask a question in a room filled with other reporters.

Overlapping the noise of journalists, Pelosi said, “Really? Really? Okay. I said what I'm gonna do. Those kind of questions are such a waste of my time.”

After the passage of the bill,&nbsp;a 1996 US&nbsp;law called the Defense of Marriage Act will be revoked. It had denied federal benefits to same-sex couples. It bars states from rejecting the validity of out-of-state marriages on the basis of sex, race or ethnicity.

The Supreme Court in 1967 declared prohibitions on interracial marriage unconstitutional.&nbsp;

Now, the new legislation does not require states to legalize same-sex marriage but does require them to recognize a marriage so long as it was valid in the state where it was performed.

In Baltimore, Maryland, on the East Coast, where her father was briefly mayor,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/controversial-highlights-of-nancy-pelosis-tenure-as-democratic-leader-535223">Pelosi </a>grew up in a political household as the youngest of seven children. When Jerry Brown, the governor of California, campaigned for president in 1976, she got active in politics and used her ties to her extended family to help him win the Maryland primary.

In 2003,&nbsp;Pelosi was one of the most prominent and vocal opponents of the US war in Iraq. When the Democrats took over the House for the first time in 12 years in 2006, this stance was validated and rewarded.

She was chosen by her party to be speaker of the House, making her the first woman in US history to hold that position.

The only position in Congress that is explicitly addressed in the US Constitution is Speaker of the House. It comes next in line after the vice president. With its own balcony overlooking the Washington Monument, its enormous office in the Capitol rotunda emphasises the status of the position.

The dominant party in the House essentially controls the whole legislative process. What legislation is studied and voted on is decided by the speaker, her deputy(s), and the chair(s) of the committee. They pick the topics for discussion and the order in which they will be discussed.

Before the Democratic Party lost control of the lower chamber of Congress, Pelosi was in the position for four years. Despite the loss, Pelosi overcame a number of obstacles within her own party to retake the gavel.

As speaker of the US House, Nancy Pelosi, a longstanding leader of the Democrats in Washington, was a great strategist who managed America's severe party split while reprimanding an uncontrollable president and guiding historic legislation.

She most recently infuriated China by visiting Taiwan as the highest-ranking US legislator to do so in the previous 25 years. China, which claims ownership of the island, retaliated against the US following her visit by conducting military exercises and cutting off diplomatic ties.

The 82-year-old, “remains under doctors’ care as he continues to progress on a long recovery process and convalescence,” the statement added. In a separate statement last week by a spokesman for Nancy Pelosi, Drew Hammill, said that Paul Pelosi had sustained injuries and required surgery to “repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands.”

Meanwhile, ICE has also issued an “immigration detainer”, notice against the accused with San Francisco authorities seeking DePape’s custody once the criminal proceedings against him conclude. The immigration agency has also said that under this “detainer” he could face possible deportation after serving the sentence he receives.&nbsp;

According to reports, DePape has been arraigned under the charges of attempted murder, assault, burglary, elder abuse, false imprisonment and threatening a US official. Court documents show that he was planning to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage and break her “her kneecaps” if she “lied” to him.&nbsp;

The court filings also said that the prosecutors detailed the attack and said that DePape’s intention “could not have been clearer.” The San Francisco District Attorney, Brooke Jenkins in the document wrote about how the accused “forced his way into the Pelosi home” with the intention to take House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hostage who is third in line to the presidency, to “seriously harm her”.&nbsp;

The prosecutors have also called for a prison sentence of 13 years to life, based on the state charges while DePape’s attorney, Lipson said, “we deny the allegations.” The court filing also said that DePape allegedly told officers and first responders that was done with the “lies coming out of Washington DC” and that he didn’t want to hurt Paul Pelosi but was on a “suicide mission”.&nbsp;

The attack against 82-year-old Paul Pelosi took place before dawn on Friday, when an intruder looking for the Speaker, who was in Washington DC at the time, instead confronted her husband who was eventually able to call the police, said an FBI affidavit filed in federal court, a day prior to the hearing.&nbsp;

It added that when the police arrived minutes later, they saw the two struggling with the hammer after which the intruder grabbed the hammer and hit Pelosi with it over the head. Notably, the federal prosecutors charged DePape separately with assault and attempted kidnapping which if convicted he can face up to 50 years in prison, the hearing for which is pending. According to the prosecutor, the assault was also caught on the police officers’ body cameras.&nbsp;
