<p>In a strongly-worded statement, she also drew a sharp contrast between Chinese President Xi Jinping and the Dalai Lama.</p>

<p>She continued, "I hope he will indulge me today to say that change is on the way. As our colleagues have said hope brings some faith and the faith of the Tibetan people in the goodness of others is what is going to make all the difference..."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I said, thank you because I've been trying for 25 years to get a visa to go to Tibet. So we went there with our delegation. We went to the Potala Palace. We saw the room where His Holiness grew up."</p>

<p>In response to the US delegation's visit, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said,&nbsp;“The 14th Dalai Lama is not a pure religious figure, but a political exile engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We are gravely concerned over the relevant reports and urge the US side to fully recognise the anti-China separatist nature of the Dalai group, honour the commitments the US has made to China on issues related to Xizang, have no contact with the Dalai group in any form, and stop sending the wrong signal to the world”, he said.</p>

<h2><strong>About DePape’s sentence</strong></h2>

<p>Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley who was presiding over the trial in a San Francisco federal court said she had to “ensure that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense.”</p>

<p>She added, “He broke into the home of an official and violently attacked the public official’s spouse. That act is unprecedented.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>DePape was sentenced to 30 years for assault and 20 years for attempted kidnapping, the sentences will run concurrently. He is also facing life imprisonment on separate state charges.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The prosecutors had sought a 40-year sentence after a jury in November found the attacker guilty of one count of assault on the immediate family member of a federal official and a second count of attempted kidnapping of a federal official.&nbsp;</p>

<p>DePape, a Canadian citizen who has lived in the US for around two decades, and was&nbsp;found guilty of attempting to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, who was in Washington DC at the time, instead confronted her husband who was eventually able to call the police.&nbsp;</p>

<p>DePape entered the couple’s San Francisco house with a hammer looking for Nancy and “smash her kneecaps” if she did not admit to the ‘lies’ of the Democratic Party, the jury was told. When the police arrived, Paul and David were seen gripping a hammer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Subsequently, when asked to drop the hammer by the officers responding to the incident, DePape abruptly struck Paul before being detained. The entire altercation was caught on the body cameras worn by the officers at the time.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Surprised and confused’</strong></h2>

<p>In the court, DePape testified that he was looking for Nancy Pelosi and when he found her husband, who was not on his list of targets, according to the Canadian national, he was “surprised and confused”.&nbsp;</p>

David DePape, the attacker, assaulted Paul Pelosi with a hammer in October 2022. The attack had left Paul&nbsp;with a fractured skull. DePape was found guilty of the assault and of attempting to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, who was not home at that time.</p>

<p>"A federal jury has convicted David Depape of Attempted Kidnapping of a Federal Officer or Employee and Assault on the Immediate Family Member of a Federal Official," said US prosecutors in a statement.</p>

<p>"DePape faces a maximum sentence of up to life in prison."</p>

<p>Before it arrived at the verdict, the jury deliberated on the case for less than a day. At the time of the attack, Nancy Pelosi was the speaker of the House. Her position made her second in line to the presidency. Pelosi has been a regular target of the far-right members of the society who believe in conspiracy theories.</p>

<p>DePape, who is a Canadian national and a former nudist activist, planned to target Nancy Pelosi and "smash her kneecaps" if she did not admit to the 'lies' of the Democratic Party, the jury was told.</p>

<p>He arrived at her house wearing gloves and carrying duct tape and rope. Nancy Pelosi was not&nbsp;home at the time and DePape encountered her husband to whom he continuously asked, "Where's Nancy?"</p>

<p>DePape has claimed to police officers that his conversation with Paul Pelosi was "pretty amicable". Paul managed to call the police and as they arrived at the scene, DePape hit him with a hammer. The police rushed to help and took the weapon away. The incident was caught on police bodycam.</p>

<p>Paul Pelosi, husband of former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, on Monday (Nov 13) took the stand as he for the first time recounted the details of the night when he was attacked by a hammer-wielding man in the San Francisco home.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Paul recalled the moment, stating that it was shocking to see a man standing at the bedroom door of the house he shares with his wife. He said that he has never discussed the incident with anyone "because it has been too traumatic".&nbsp;</p>

<p>He testified in the trial of David DePape, who is shown on video carrying out the attack. Paul recalled how the man whacked him in the head with a hammer.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It was a tremendous sense of shock to recognise that somebody had broken into the house and looking at him and looking at the hammer and the ties, I recognised that I was in serious danger, so I tried to stay as calm as possible," he told the jurors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There have been baseless allegations made by people like&nbsp;Elon Musk,&nbsp;that Paul Pelosi was somehow responsible for the attack, and there are several ideas circulating that DePape was either framed or had a sexual relationship with Pelosi, as reported by Al Jazeera.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The San Francisco District Attorney's Office refused to provide copies of the footage to news organisations, including the New York Times, Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, and Associated Press, citing the risk of false information.</p>

<p>However, attorneys for the news organisations contended that having access to the footage would be essential for case transparency.</p>

<p>DePape is accused of an attack on both a state and federal level. He is accused of attempted murder, residential burglary in the first degree, elder abuse, assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, and threatening a family member of a public official in state court.</p>

<p>He faces two counts in federal court: one for the attempted kidnapping of a US official and one for assaulting a US official's immediate family member. DePape has filed not guilty pleas in both federal and state courts.</p>
