The man who attacked Paul Pelosi, husband of the former United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was sentenced to 30 years in prison by a federal judge, on Friday (May 17).&nbsp;

The attacker, David DePape, was sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of assault and attempted kidnapping of a federal official, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/man-who-attacked-nancy-pelosis-husband-last-year-found-guilty-of-crime-659489">last year</a>, after the violent attack in October 2022.

<h2>About DePape’s sentence</h2>

Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley who was presiding over the trial in a San Francisco federal court said she had to “ensure that the sentence reflects the seriousness of the offense.”

She added, “He broke into the home of an official and violently attacked the public official’s spouse. That act is unprecedented.”&nbsp;

DePape was sentenced to 30 years for assault and 20 years for attempted kidnapping, the sentences will run concurrently. He is also facing life imprisonment on separate state charges.&nbsp;

The attack in October 2022 on Paul, who was 83 years old at the time, left him with multiple injuries including a fractured skull for which he was hospitalised for nearly a week.&nbsp;

The prosecutors had sought a 40-year sentence after a jury in November found the attacker guilty of one count of assault on the immediate family member of a federal official and a second count of attempted kidnapping of a federal official.&nbsp;

DePape, a Canadian citizen who has lived in the US for around two decades, and was&nbsp;found guilty of attempting to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, who was in Washington DC at the time, instead confronted her husband who was eventually able to call the police.&nbsp;

DePape entered the couple’s San Francisco house with a hammer looking for Nancy and “smash her kneecaps” if she did not admit to the ‘lies’ of the Democratic Party, the jury was told. When the police arrived, Paul and David were seen gripping a hammer.&nbsp;

Subsequently, when asked to drop the hammer by the officers responding to the incident, DePape abruptly struck Paul before being detained. The entire altercation was caught on the body cameras worn by the officers at the time.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Surprised and confused’</h2>

In the court, DePape testified that he was looking for Nancy Pelosi and when he found her husband, who was not on his list of targets, according to the Canadian national, he was “surprised and confused”.&nbsp;

DePape also said that he had reacted and hit Pelosi “in the head,” because his plan was “basically ruined.”

<h2>‘Immensely grateful’</h2>

A spokesperson for the former Speaker took to X and said that the family “couldn’t be prouder of their Pop and his tremendous courage” on the night of the attack and for testifying.&nbsp;

“Speaker Pelosi and her family are immensely grateful to all who have sent love and prayers over the last eighteen months, as Mr Pelosi continues his recovery," added the spokesperson.

Nancy Pelosi backs Chuck Schumer's remarks on Benjamin Netanyahu, calls it 'act of courage'

Former US House speaker Nancy Pelosi has come under controversy after she was caught on camera asking pro-Palestinian protesters, gathered outside her home to "Go back to China".&nbsp;

The protesters were reportedly batting for a ceasefire in the ongoing Hamas conflict but Pelosi asserted that they move to China where their 'headquarters' was located.&nbsp;

Pelosi's controversial statement comes a day after she appeared on&nbsp;CNN’s State of the Union and called on the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to investigate&nbsp;protesters involved in the progressive movement pressuring the Biden administration to support a ceasefire in Gaza.

“For [the pro-Palestinian protesters] to call for a cease-fire is Mr Putin’s message. Make no mistake, this is directly connected to what he would like to see. Same thing with Ukraine. It’s about Putin’s message,” Pelosi said.

“I think some of these protesters are spontaneous and organic and sincere. Some, I think, are connected to Russia. And I say that having looked at this for a long time now, as you know,” she added.

When pressed to elaborate on her statement, Pelosi said she believed the activists were "Russian plants".&nbsp;

“Seeds or plants. I think some financing should be investigated. And I want to ask the FBI to investigate that.”

The interview instantly sparked backlash with supporters of the ceasefire condemning Pelosi's views as "downright authoritarian".&nbsp;

<h2>USA's anti-ceasefire stance</h2>

Ever since the war broke out after the October 7 terrorist attack by Hamas, US President Joe Biden has faced criticism for his policy in Gaza. Biden has batted for Israel to defend and answer Hamas while remaining steadfastly against ceasefire requests.

Washington believes that a ceasefire would only benefit Hamas and allow it to drag the conflict. During a United Nations Security Council (UNSC) emergency meeting last month, the USA voted against a resolution for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.&nbsp;

"This resolution still contains a call for an unconditional ceasefire... it would leave Hamas in place able to repeat what it did on October 7,"&nbsp;US deputy UN representative Robert Wood justified the decision at the time.&nbsp;

Former US House speaker Nancy Pelosi tells pro-Palestinian activists to 'go back to China' | Watch

One of the defining images of Donald Trump's presidency was his faceoff with the then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. As the former president strengthened his frontrunner status by winning the Republican primary in New Hampshire, Pelosi launched yet another attack on Trump.&nbsp;

Slugfest of oldies? Pelosi mocks Trump with cognitive disorder barb, then mixes up his name with Biden

Republican White House hopeful, Nikki Haley, on Saturday (Jan 20) questioned former United States President Donald Trump’s mental fitness after he repeatedly seemed to confuse her with former US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a campaign speech.&nbsp;

<h2>Trump confuses Nikki and Nancy</h2>

Speaking at a campaign event on Friday ahead of the first-in-the-nation primary election in the US state of New Hampshire, Trump seemingly confused Haley with Pelosi and blamed the former South Carolina governor for not protecting the Capitol during the attack on January 6.&nbsp;

“Nikki Haley is in charge of security. We offered her 10,000 people – soldiers, National Guard, whatever they want – they turned it down. They don’t want to talk about that,” the Republican frontrunner told his supporters.&nbsp;

The former president was referring to the attack on the US Capitol on January 6 when his supporters stormed the building to stop the American lawmakers from certifying incumbent President Joe Biden’s win following the 2020 presidential election.&nbsp;

He mentioned Haley again and added, “They destroyed all of the information, all of the evidence, everything, deleted and destroyed all of it.”&nbsp;

The 77-year-old Republican frontrunner has repeatedly accused Pelosi of turning down security he says his administration offered. However, a special House committee which was tasked with investigating the attack found no evidence to support that claim.

<h2>Haley’s response</h2>

In response to Trump’s gaffe, Haley, on Saturday said, “They’re saying he got confused, that he was talking about something else, he’s talking about Nancy Pelosi.” She added, “He mentioned me multiple times in that scenario.”&nbsp;

“The concern I have is — I’m not saying anything derogatory — but when you’re dealing with the pressures of the presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do this,” said the former United Nations Ambassador.&nbsp;

Notably, Haley, who turned 52 on Saturday (Jan 20), has advocated for “mental competency tests” for older politicians and has previously taken a swipe at both Trump and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/explained-joe-bidens-age-in-focus-yet-again-as-us-prez-celebrates-81st-birthday-ahead-of-2024-elections-660845">Biden, 81</a>, for their age.

At a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire on Saturday night Trump said that he took a cognitive test and “aced it.” He added, “I’ll let you know when I go bad. I really think I’ll be able to tell you.” The former president also said that “his mind is stronger now than it was 25 years ago.”

<h2>Trump ‘obsessed’ with dictators</h2>

The former South Carolina governor while speaking to reporters following an event in Peterborough, New Hampshire emphasised on Trump’s relationships with strongmen such as Russia’s Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korea’s Kim Jong Un.

Recently, her campaign released a television ad which will run in New Hampshire featuring the mother of Otto Warmbier, who died in 2017 after being held in North Korean custody.&nbsp;

Haley accused Trump of writing “love letters” to Kim after Warmbier was recovered, adding that he is “obsessed with these dictators.”&nbsp;

<h2>Haley will not be Trump’s VP</h2>

Hours after Haley made it clear to New Hampshire voters on Friday that she would not serve as Trump’s vice president if he wins the Republican nomination, the former US president also said he would not pick her to be his running mate.&nbsp;

Haley, who is challenging Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, told voters at a diner stop in Amherst, New Hampshire, “I don’t want to be anybody’s vice president. That is off the table,” as quoted by Politico and the Washington Post. &nbsp;

Hours after Haley’s remark, Trump said, “She is OK, but she is not presidential timber. And when I say that, that probably means she is not going to be chosen as the vice president.”&nbsp;

This comes as many have speculated that the former president may choose American entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy who dropped out of the race to White House after the Iowa caucuses and has since endorsed Trump.&nbsp;

Haley’s response In response to Trump’s gaffe, Haley, on Saturday said, “They’re saying he got confused, that he was talking about something else, he’s talking about Nancy Pelosi.” She added, “He mentioned me multiple times in that scenario.” “The concern I have is — I’m not saying anything derogatory — but when you’re dealing with the pressures of the presidency, we can’t have someone else that we question whether they’re mentally fit to do this,” said the former United Nations Ambassador. At a rally in Manchester, New Hampshire on Saturday night Trump said that he took a cognitive test and “aced it.” He added, “I’ll let you know when I go bad. US presidential election: Nikki Haley questions Trump’s mental fitness after he confused her with Nancy Pelosi

The man arrested for attacking the husband of Nancy Pelosi, the former speaker of the US House of Representatives, was found guilty of the crime on Thursday (November 16) in a federal court in San Francisco. David DePape, the attacker, assaulted Paul Pelosi with a hammer in October 2022. The attack had left Paul&nbsp;with a fractured skull. DePape was found guilty of the assault and of attempting to kidnap Nancy Pelosi, who was not home at that time.

"A federal jury has convicted David Depape of Attempted Kidnapping of a Federal Officer or Employee and Assault on the Immediate Family Member of a Federal Official," said US prosecutors in a statement.

"DePape faces a maximum sentence of up to life in prison."

Before it arrived at the verdict, the jury deliberated on the case for less than a day. At the time of the attack, Nancy Pelosi was the speaker of the House. Her position made her second in line to the presidency. Pelosi has been a regular target of the far-right members of the society who believe in conspiracy theories.

DePape, who is a Canadian national and a former nudist activist, planned to target Nancy Pelosi and "smash her kneecaps" if she did not admit to the 'lies' of the Democratic Party, the jury was told.

He arrived at her house wearing gloves and carrying duct tape and rope. Nancy Pelosi was not&nbsp;home at the time and DePape encountered her husband to whom he continuously asked, "Where's Nancy?"

DePape has claimed to police officers that his conversation with Paul Pelosi was "pretty amicable". Paul managed to call the police and as they arrived at the scene, DePape hit him with a hammer. The police rushed to help and took the weapon away. The incident was caught on police bodycam.

Man who attacked Nancy Pelosi's husband with hammer found guilty of the crime

Paul Pelosi, husband of former House speaker Nancy Pelosi, on Monday (Nov 13) took the stand as he for the first time recounted the details of the night when he was attacked by a hammer-wielding man in the San Francisco home.&nbsp;

Paul recalled the moment, stating that it was shocking to see a man standing at the bedroom door of the house he shares with his wife. He said that he has never discussed the incident with anyone "because it has been too traumatic".&nbsp;

He testified in the trial of David DePape, who is shown on video carrying out the attack. Paul recalled how the man whacked him in the head with a hammer.&nbsp;

"It was a tremendous sense of shock to recognise that somebody had broken into the house and looking at him and looking at the hammer and the ties, I recognised that I was in serious danger, so I tried to stay as calm as possible," he told the jurors.&nbsp;

'We thought we could die': Former House speaker Nancy Pelosi on visiting Ukraine last year

Taking the adage 'hope for the best, prepare for the worst' to heart, Taiwan is focusing its attention on developing weapons and equipment, anticipating a blockade of the Taiwan Strait by China.

Taking the adage 'hope for the best, prepare for the worst' to heart, Taiwan is focusing its attention on developing weapons and equipment, anticipating a blockade of the Taiwan Strait by China. The Taiwanese defence ministry mentioned the plan in a recently released report that is currently seeking parliamentary budget approval. China considers Taiwan a part of its territory but the island nation and its people have never accepted Beijing's control. However, after Beijing staged war games around the island, fired indiscriminate missiles and declared it a no-fly zone last year in an attempt to simulate how it would look to cut Taiwan off in case of a potential conflict, Taipei has taken evasive actions. The report added that Taiwan will be preparing parts for F-16 fighters, replenishing weapons, reviewing strategic fuel reserves and repairing abilities to 'strengthen combat continuity'. "Recently, the Communist military's exercise and training model has been adjusted from a single military type to joint operations of land, sea, air and rocket forces. It is adopting an actual war approach and shifting from training to combat preparation," read the report. WATCH | Taiwan braces for blockade by China | Xi Jinping plans to speak with Zelensky: WSJ Report × The report was released on the same day when Chinese President Xi Jinping batted for 'modernisation' of the army to make it the 'Great Wall of Steel'. "We must fully promote the modernisation of national defence and the armed forces, and build the people's armed forces into a Great Wall of steel that effectively safeguards national sovereignty, security and development interests," said Xi in his closing remarks at the annual parliament session. After former US House speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the island nation in August 2022, China upped the ante on Taiwan. During the 20th Communist Party of China (CPC) congress last year, Xi asserted that the Taiwan matter was for the Chinese people only. “The resolution of the Taiwan issue is a matter for the Chinese people themselves, to be decided by the Chinese people," said Xi. “We will continue to strive for peaceful reunification with the greatest sincerity and the utmost effort. But, we will never promise to renounce the use of force. And we reserve the option of taking all measures necessary.” Read more: 'Will never renounce force', says Xi Jinping on Taiwan during the party congress (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Taiwan prepares for 'worst case scenario' with China by altering defence spending strategy

In August last year, the then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a defiant message for China when she visited Taiwan that America will stand by the democracy and sovereignty of the island nation.&nbsp;

Kevin McCarthy, the newly elected US House Speaker and a California Republican, seems to not go down the same road as Financial Times reported that he will meet Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen in California to avoid China's aggression.&nbsp;

Tsai Ing-wen and McCarthy have both agreed to hold the meeting in California as the Taiwanese president is set to visit Central America in April. According to the report, the meeting was fixed in the US and not in Taiwan so that the muscular manoeuvres by the Chinese military, like that displayed by Beijing during Pelosi's visit, could be avoided.&nbsp;

Chinese military drills around Taiwan were a warning for Washington to not support Taiwan in its independence aspirations and adhere to the One-China policy.&nbsp;Pelosi's visit led to a &nbsp;massive hue and cry from China, as her trip to Taiwan was only the second ever by a US House speaker.

In August last year, the then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had a defiant message for China when she visited Taiwan that America will stand by the democracy and sovereignty of the island nation. Kevin McCarthy, the newly elected US House Speaker and a California Republican, seems to not go down the same road as Financial Times reported that he will meet Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen in California to avoid China's aggression. Tsai Ing-wen and McCarthy have both agreed to hold the meeting in California as the Taiwanese president is set to visit Central America in April. According to the report, the meeting was fixed in the US and not in Taiwan so that the muscular manoeuvres by the Chinese military, like that displayed by Beijing during Pelosi's visit, could be avoided. Footage of the attack on Nancy Pelosi's husband, Paul Pelosi, was made public on Friday morning (January 27),&nbsp;following&nbsp;requests from news organisations to release the video.&nbsp;The footage shows what happened on October 28, 2022, when David DePape, 42, reportedly stormed into&nbsp;Pelosis' house in San Francisco, California, in an attempt to physically harm Nancy Pelosi&nbsp;who was not at home at the time.

Instead, DePape ran into 82-year-old Paul Pelosi and hit him with a hammer, causing Pelosi to sustain damage to his hands, arms, and skull in addition to other injuries. Pelosi managed to recover from his wounds, but since the incident, he has been spotted in public sporting a helmet and gloves.

Body-camera footage from the officers who originally arrived at the Pelosis' home is among the media that was made public on Friday. A portion of the video had previously been displayed in an open court preliminary hearing last month.

The infighting in the Republican camp has stalled the coronation of Kevin McCarthy as the speaker of the House of Representatives. McCarthy on Tuesday became the only political leader in a century - the first since the Civil War to lose the opening three rounds of the ballot to become the House speaker. After far-right Republican rebel colleagues pulled their vote, a chaotic House was forced to adjourn without electing a speaker. McCarthy needed to win 218 votes of the full House to become the speaker and replace former Democrat leader Nancy Pelosi. However, with Republicans gaining a razor-thin 222-212 majority in the House after the November midterm elections, the refusal of the Republican leaders to vote for McCarthy has caused the logjam. The situation is unlikely to resolve unless Democrats vote for him which appears to be a foregone conclusion. Read more: Explained: Will the US House of Representatives have a speaker when it convenes? After the first round of voting, McCarthy only had 203 votes while Democrat Hakim Jeffries amassed 212 votes. Meanwhile, Andy Biggs managed to secure 10 votes and nine lawmakers did not support any of the three candidates. The trend continued in the next two ballots where McCarthy received as many as 20 no-votes from his own side. The likes of Andy Biggs, Paul Gosar, and Matt Gaetz have been the loud voices objecting to McCarthy's endorsement as the Republican nominee since November. “It’s true we struggle with trust with Mr. McCarthy because time and again his viewpoints, his positions, they shift like sands underneath you. If you want to drain the swamp, you cannot put the biggest alligator in charge of the exercise," Gaetz had remarked ahead of the voting. Bob Good of Virginia, one of McCarthy's fiercest rivals was quoted as saying by Fox. McCarthy had previously stood for the position in 2015 but had to withdraw following some confusion. He became House minority leader after the 2018 midterms after Republicans lost control of the House. Kevin McCarthy becomes the first person to lose three rounds of House speaker voting in a century

In the weeks leading up to the 118th session of the United States Congress, which is set to convene on Tuesday (December 3) at noon (local time), the attention has been focused on Republican Congressman Kevin McCarthy whose bid to become the speaker of the House of Representatives has been uncertain at best.&nbsp;

Notably, this is not the first time that the California lawmaker has sought to lead the 435-member House. In 2015, he faced similar opposition from a small section of the Republican party (GOP) after he entered the race when House Speaker John Boehner, (R-Ohio) resigned.&nbsp;

Last year, following the midterm elections the GOP, took over the House with a narrow majority of 222-213 from the Democrats and the outgoing speaker Nancy Pelosi. However, given the opposition against McCarthy so far, from people of his own caucus, Tuesday might become the first time ever in nearly 100 years that a majority is garnered to elect a speaker of the chamber. &nbsp;

Importance of a House speaker

The role of a speaker is critical for the government in Washington to function since not only will the lawmaker preside over the lower chamber of Congress they would also be next in line for the presidency. Typically, a speaker is elected at the beginning of a new Congress, however, the House can elect a new one if the incumbent dies, resigns or is removed from office, said a report by Associated Press. &nbsp;

Additionally, the chamber cannot be organised until a speaker who is to preside over it is chosen, therefore, the vote to choose a speaker will be the first one taken once the lawmakers convene for the session on January 3 even before the new and returning members of both parties are sworn in.&nbsp;

The speaker has “massive influence over what sorts of bills and amendments get voted on in Congress”, said Christian Fong, a political science professor at the University of Michigan, to Al Jazeera. He added that this also gives them a significant amount of control over what becomes a law in the upcoming session.&nbsp;

Who will lead the house from both parties in the upcoming session?

After the midterm elections, both the GOP conference and Democratic caucus held an informal vote where they selected the lawmaker they want to lead their party for the upcoming session. Therefore, by mid-November, following a close-door vote with Republicans, McCarthy emerged as the leader of the House for his party. Subsequently, by the end of the month, Democrats chose Representative Hakeem Jeffries from New York to lead the party in the House. &nbsp;

How does the voting take place?

Once the House has the minimum number of members present to proceed or quorum, leaders of the house will read out the names of the speaker nominee from their respective party before the roll call vote for the election. Subsequently, the clerk appoints lawmakers from each party as tellers to tally the votes.&nbsp;

Notably, once the Congress begins on January 3, the members are not obligated to vote for the party’s chosen candidate, in fact, while the person typically is a member of the House it is not required. Therefore, any lawmaker including the incumbent President Joe Biden, former President Donald Trump, and Senators, can be nominated and have previously received votes for speaker’s office, in the past, but not gained the majority, reported AP.&nbsp;

This is because lawmakers in the House call out the name of their choice from the floor in a time-consuming roll call. So far, the number to reach a majority in the 435-member chamber has been 218 votes, however, many speakers including the outgoing speaker Pelosi have taken the gavel with less than that. &nbsp;

ALSO READ |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/twitter-slams-kevin-mccarthy-for-saying-he-would-hit-nancy-pelosi-with-gavel-402272">Twitter slams Kevin McCarthy for saying he would hit Nancy Pelosi with gavel</a>

This is because some members vote present instead of calling out a name, therefore, according to AP, every lawmaker that votes “present” lowers the total tally needed to reach a majority. In case a majority is not reached on the first ballot, as many have speculated would happen in McCarthy’s case, the clerk will repeat the roll call vote several times until a majority is garnered.&nbsp;

The passing of the gavel

Once the speaker nominee has won a majority of the vote the clear announces the results. Subsequently, a bipartisan committee typically one consisting of the members of the candidate’s home state escorts the speaker-elect to the dais for the oath-taking ceremony, where the outgoing speaker, in this case, speaker and California Democrat Pelosi, joins their successor and passes the gavel in a peaceful transition of power.&nbsp;

Why do many people McCarthy would not be able to garner a majority to become the speaker?

The last time a speaker for the House of Representatives was not elected in the first round of votes was exactly a century ago in 1923 when a speaker was selected after nearly nine rounds of voting. “It’s a very thin (GOP majority), so it only takes a small group of determined representatives to really get together and pose a credible threat to prevent the Speaker from being elected”, said Fong to Al Jazeera. The professor also spoke about how despite growing bipartisan opposition to the power of the Speaker, the path to the gavel will be particularly difficult for McCarthy.&nbsp;

The situation that&nbsp;the&nbsp;Republican lawmaker faces&nbsp;is not entirely unique, as&nbsp;the outgoing speaker Pelosi who held the position for nearly four years witnessed similar internal opposition during her reelection in 2021. However,&nbsp;despite protests from five members of her caucus she managed to retain her position with&nbsp;Dems'&nbsp;slim majority in the chamber, at the time.&nbsp;

According to Fong, Republicans who are opposing McCarthy’s bid for the gavel&nbsp;are from the so-called “safe-districts”, where they did not face much competition in the elections&nbsp;or had trouble raising funds due to their strong political base. Therefore, they do not value the power a speaker holds over what would otherwise be “valuable resources” for the House members which include committee assignments and campaign funding.&nbsp;

Additionally, the California Republican faces a number of critics who want change in the way the House operates and have long complained that the structure gives too much power to leaders and argued for changes which would make small groups of dissenters obstruct and change legislation, reported the New York Times.&nbsp;

McCarthy currently faces at least a dozen lawmakers who would choose anyone else but him which has left him scrambling for votes at the last minute&nbsp;and negotiating with the opposing lawmakers on concessions which may dilute his powers, should he take the office of the speaker,&nbsp;in the upcoming session. This mix also includes&nbsp;a group of newly elected lawmakers who are still weighing their options, said the NYT.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

What will happen if McCarthy fails?

As mentioned earlier, the speaker is an important part of not only the House but also the functioning of the US government, therefore with&nbsp;no one to preside over the chamber, it cannot fully form, name its committee chairmen, or even hold floor proceedings. In one word, chaos,&nbsp;"One thing to stress about this whole process, nothing else happens in the House of Representatives until a speaker is elected. It's the only leadership position specifically mentioned in the Constitution," said NPR's&nbsp;congressional correspondent, Deirdre Walsh.

She added, "Members of Congress cannot even be sworn in to start a new session of Congress without a speaker first being elected. So opening day could be very chaotic."&nbsp;

Additionally, the GOP is holding on to a majority in the lower chamber by just a couple of&nbsp;votes which&nbsp;makes McCarthy’s bid to become the next speaker all the more critical given that members with outsized power can threaten to effectively dilute if not wipe out the&nbsp;power Republicans would otherwise enjoy as a majority in the chamber,&nbsp;affecting potentially every upcoming legislation the dissenters&nbsp;they do not get their way.&nbsp;

“One reason why you don’t see more opposition to the Speaker in the modern era is that the Speaker controls all kinds of valuable resources that members of the House of Representatives really want,” said Fong to Al Jazeera.

US: Suspect in Paul Pelosi attack pleads not guilty on state charges

Outgoing US House of Representatives&nbsp;Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday lashed out at a reporter while addressing her weekly press conference after the latter questioned the speaker if she will be completing her two-year term.

Pelosi called the question 'a waste of my time'. In the press conference, the Democrat said that this 'may be the last' leadership press conference by her. Last month, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries was officially elected by her party, after pressurising Pelosi for years to step aside and make way for a new generation.

Still, Pelosi was able to comfortably clinch victory in the election from California Bay Area district.

During the press conference, the reporter had asked, “Will you commit to serving your full two-year term for the people of San Francisco?”

“What is this? What is this? Don't bother me with a question like that,” the speaker snapped.

The journalist, however, did not give up and once again clamoured to ask a question in a room filled with other reporters.

Overlapping the noise of journalists, Pelosi said, “Really? Really? Okay. I said what I'm gonna do. Those kind of questions are such a waste of my time.”

A landmark bill that will give federal protection&nbsp;to same-sex marriage was passed by the US Congress on Thursday (December 8).&nbsp;The bill was passed after a vote of 258-169, with all of the chamber's Democrats and 39 Republicans voting in favour. On the other hand, 169 of the chamber's Republicans voted against it and one voted "present".&nbsp;

President Joe Biden, who vouched for the bill, has promised that he will quickly sign the measure into law. It will be called the Respect for Marriage Act.&nbsp;

The bill had won the senate's approval last month with a vote of 61-36. Shortly before the vote, outgoing House Democratic Speaker Nancy Pelosi said: "Today this chamber proudly stands with the forces of freedom."&nbsp;

Today's vote was needed to reconcile minor differences with the Senate's version.&nbsp;

Pelosi tweeted on Thursday, "I began my career fighting for LGBTQ communities and now, one of the final bills that I will sign as Speaker will ensure the federal government never again stands in the way of marrying the person you love."&nbsp;

During the debate, David Cicilline, a Democrat from Rhode Island said, "I urge all those here today who previously voted against this bill to reconsider, be part of history, and join us in voting for its passage today. Today’s vote is a monumental win in the fight LBTQ+ equality but the work does not stop here. We remain the only minority group in America where in a majority of states it still legal to discriminate against us in several key areas of life."&nbsp;

Jim Jordan, a Republican from Ohio said, "For years, the Democrats have been playing a dangerous game with the Court. They want Americans to believe that the Court lacks transparency and struggles with its ethics, simply not true. This bill is simply the latest installment of the Democrats campaign to intimidate the highest Court in our land."&nbsp;

After the passage of the bill,&nbsp;a 1996 US&nbsp;law called the Defense of Marriage Act will be revoked. It had denied federal benefits to same-sex couples. It bars states from rejecting the validity of out-of-state marriages on the basis of sex, race or ethnicity.

The Supreme Court in 1967 declared prohibitions on interracial marriage unconstitutional.&nbsp;

Now, the new legislation does not require states to legalize same-sex marriage but does require them to recognize a marriage so long as it was valid in the state where it was performed.

Nancy Pelosi is one of the most influential women in the male-dominated US Congress and has been at the zenith of US politics for decades. However, Pelosi made the decision to step down as leader of the House Democrats, stating that "a new generation must lead the Democratic caucus." As reported by the BBC, she will remain in the House as a member, representing California's 12th district. Pelosi is the first woman in American history to hold the position, and she has been instrumental in furthering or rather obstructing the agendas of several presidents during her tenure. Her political instincts and acumen have given her the solid footing that she holds in US politics today. She attended college in the neighbouring city of Washington, DC, where she later fell in love with and married banker, Paul Pelosi. Pelosi started out as a homemaker when they initially relocated to Manhattan and San Francisco. Within a six-year span, she gave birth to five children: four daughters and a son. When Jerry Brown, the governor of California, campaigned for president in 1976, she got active in politics and used her ties to her extended family to help him win the Maryland primary. In 2001, she narrowly won the election to become the party's vote-counter and second-in-command in the House of Representatives.
