Amid tensions over Taiwan, the United States has delayed postponed a routine test launch of an Air Force Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile.

US National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, John Kirby said that Air Force had planned to conduct the test launch this week from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

Citing US officials, the Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the delay might last 10 days after the departure of House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi from Taipei.

In a show of force in the Taiwan Strait, China deployed scores of planes and fired live missiles near Taiwan.

Condemning China's "irresponsible" decision and its overreaction to the visit of Pelosi, the White House said it expected Beijing would continue to react in such a manner.

"China has chosen to overreact and use the speaker's visit as a pretext to increase provocative military activity in and around the Taiwan Strait," Kirby said.

Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the US military canceled a test of its Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile with the aim of lowering nuclear tensions with Moscow.

Minuteman III, which has a range of 6,000-plus miles (9,660-plus km), is a key part of the US military's strategic arsenal.

The nuclear-capable missile can travel at a speed of approximately 15,000 miles per hour (24,000 kph).

However, a few hours prior to her arrival, Japan's defence minister Nobuo Kishi informed the media that five out of nine Chinese ballistic missiles had landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Terming the incident as 'first of its kind', Nobuo said, “Five of the nine ballistic missiles launched by China are believed to have landed within Japan’s EEZ." It is not a mere coincidence that China fired not one but five missiles on Japan's Okinawa island. After all, this is not the first time that China has conducted a military exercise surrounding Taiwan. A look at the events leading up to the military strike suggests that China had planned such an attack. The G7 statement on Taiwan It was long speculated that Pelosi might visit Japan after her layover in Taiwan. Tokyo is a part of the Quad and an axis that vehemently objects to China and its expansionist policies. Moreover, in the aftermath of Pelosi's Taiwan visit, Japan, alongside G7 countries released a statement advising China not to try and change the status quo in the region. Hence, it can be established that the firing of missiles on Japan's southernmost islands, beyond its territorial waters was a warning sign for Tokyo to ease its Taiwan rhetoric. As mentioned above, territorial sovereignty is the main reason behind the disagreement. Additionally, China has not ruled out taking it by force. At the end of the Chinese civil war in 1949, the losing Kuomintang government fled to the island of Taiwan and established the Republic of China (ROC) government in exile. The Chinese Communist party (CCP) established the People’s Republic of China on the mainland. Starting from the 1970s, many nations began switching their formal affiliation from the Republic of China to Beijing, and today less than 15 world governments recognise Taiwan as a country. The Chinese Communist Party has never formally ruled over Taiwan and since the end of the civil war Taiwan has enjoyed de facto independence. After the ending of martial law in the 1980s, the island nation anchored itself to become a democracy with free elections. But for Chinese leader, Xi Jinping, the unification of China and Taiwan is pivotal. While, Taiwan’s President, Tsai Ing-wen, considers Taiwan as an independent country with no need to formally declare independence, Beijing recognises Taiwan’s democratically elected government as a separatist group.

A day after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi completed a whirlwind less than 24-hour trip to Taiwan, a miffed China has started its largest military exercise around Taiwan. Now, five of its nine ballistic missiles have landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), increasing tension in the region and threatening instability.&nbsp;

Japan's defence minister Nobuo Kishi termed the incident as 'first of its kind' and was quoted as saying by the media, “Five of the nine ballistic missiles launched by China are believed to have landed within Japan’s EEZ,"&nbsp;

Reportedly, Japan has also lodged a diplomatic protest in the aftermath of the incident. The Japanese minister also called the matter a serious problem that affected the national security of the country and the safety of its citizens.&nbsp;

It is pertinent to note that islands such as Okinawa, situated in the southernmost end of Japan are close to Taiwan. The EEZ extends to over 370 kilometres from Japan's coastline, beyond its territorial waters.&nbsp;

And since China started its major military exercise surrounding Taiwan, it was only a matter of time before a stray missile could have ended on one of the islands.

Is China taking revenge for the G7 statement?

However, experts are of the view that the landing of five ballistic missiles cannot be a coincidence. China and Japan have been historic enemies. Even after the death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Chinese social media platforms were replete with users who were cheering the assassination.&nbsp;

Moreover, China attacking Japan, comes in the aftermath of Tokyo condemning Beijing in the G7 joint statement and advising it not to try and change the status quo in the region.

Reportedly, after the G7 joint statement, the Chinese foreign minister cancelled its bilateral meeting with Japan that was scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the ongoing ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting in Cambodia.

Reportedly, China's navy, air force and other departments have taken part in the drill which is underway in six zones interspersed around Taiwan.

She would be the highest-ranking US official to travel to the hamlet of Panmunjom, which serves as a site of inter-Korean peace since North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with then-president Donald Trump there in 2019. When Pelosi visited with Kim Jin-pyo, speaker of the National Assembly in Seoul, they spoke about North Korea's nuclear weapons programmes. Kim Jin-pyo read from a joint statement that the two "expressed concern over the grave situation in which North Korea's level of threat is heightening."

This year, North Korea has launched a record-breaking flurry of weapons tests, including the first launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile at the full range since 2017. The two lawmakers pledged their support for the leaders of the two nations' attempts to persuade Pyongyang to denuclearize and advocated for "strong and extended deterrence against North Korea."

The US Navy official said that the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli was operating east of Taiwan. The Ronald Reagan and the Tripoli have latest generation F-35 fighter jets on them.

The US has conveyed China that positioning of the two ships in the region was not linked to Pelosi's visit.

US warships cruise near Taiwan amid Pelosi visit

In the aftermath of the United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, twenty-seven Chinese warplanes flew into the island nation's air defence zone on Wednesday (August 3). Pelosi and her delegation left Taiwan and headed to South Korea on her Aisa tour. After that, she will visit Japan.&nbsp;

Taiwan's defence ministry said in a tweet: "27 PLA aircraft... entered the surrounding area of (Republic of China) on August 3, 2022." The ministry informed that as many as six J-11 fighter jets, five J-16 multirole fighters and 16 SU-30 multirole fighters entered the air defence zone today.&nbsp;

Pelosi's historic visit to Taiwan has angered China and Beijing claims the self-ruled island country as its own territory. China even says that it will not hesitate in using use force to unite the two territories one day, in case it is required.&nbsp;

Previously, on Monday night, 21 Chinese military aircraft flew into the southwestern part of Taiwan's air defence zone. In an immediate response, Taiwan deployed anti-aircraft missile systems and also sent an air patrol to monitor the situation.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Chinese state television on showed footage of military drills conducted by the PLA's Eastern Theatre Command near Taiwan. The CCTV showed military planes taking off, naval warships on patrol, military vehicles and missile weapons participating in drills.&nbsp;

Although, there is no confirmation regarding when the video was recorded.&nbsp;

The spokesperson of Eastern Theatre Command, Shi Yi, said that the exercises were aimed to "shock and deter against the major escalation of the United States' recent negative actions on the Taiwan issue, and a serious warning to the Taiwan independence forces."&nbsp;

United States House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan has resulted in tension between the US and China. Beijing did not take the visit well and even went on to threaten military action due to its complicated history and connection with the region. However, Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday and in an opinion piece published in the Washington Post, the veteran politician defended her visit and said that American leaders will “never give in to autocrats.

“We cannot stand by as [China] proceeds to threaten Taiwan – and democracy itself. Indeed, we take this trip at a time when the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy. By traveling to Taiwan, we honor our commitment to democracy: reaffirming that the freedoms of Taiwan — and all democracies — must be respected."

Ahead of Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, China positioned a number of warships near the line dividing the Taiwan Strait and the country’s foreign ministry went on to call the visit “extremely dangerous”.

"The Chinese People's Liberation Army is on high alert and will launch a series of targeted military operations to counter this, resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely thwart external interference and 'Taiwan independence' separatist attempts," PLA spokesman Wu Qian said in an official statement according to reports by AFP.

However, in the opinion piece, Pelosi denied China’s allegations about the trip being “provocative” and said that the sole purpose was to demonstrate their strong commitment to self-ruled Taiwan.

“We take this trip at a time when the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy. As Russia wages its premeditated, illegal war against Ukraine, killing thousands of innocents – even children – it is essential that America and our allies make clear that we never give in to autocrats.”

This was the first visit by any high-ranking US politician to Taiwan since 1997 when House speaker New Gingrich visited the region.

However, Pelosi landed in Taiwan on Tuesday and in an opinion piece published in the Washington Post, the veteran politician defended her visit and said that American leaders will “never give in to autocrats. “We cannot stand by as [China] proceeds to threaten Taiwan – and democracy itself. Indeed, we take this trip at a time when the world faces a choice between autocracy and democracy. By traveling to Taiwan, we honor our commitment to democracy: reaffirming that the freedoms of Taiwan — and all democracies — must be respected." "The Chinese People's Liberation Army is on high alert and will launch a series of targeted military operations to counter this, resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and resolutely thwart external interference and 'Taiwan independence' separatist attempts," PLA spokesman Wu Qian said in an official statement according to reports by AFP. However, in the opinion piece, Pelosi denied China’s allegations about the trip being “provocative” and said that the sole purpose was to demonstrate their strong commitment to self-ruled Taiwan.
