As US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi began her engagement in Taiwan on Wednesday, China&nbsp;called her visit a "farce" and vowed those who "offended China would be punished".

"This is a complete farce. The United States is violating China's sovereignty under the guise of so-called 'democracy," Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi said.&nbsp;

Now the House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, is poised to travel to Taiwan during a tour of Asia nations this week, once again defying Beijing at a moment of extraordinary friction between the US and China – but also creating a host of problems for Joe Biden.

Pelosi has declined to confirm a visit, citing security concerns. But a stop in Taipei is now widely expected – probably on Tuesday – and has been confirmed to media outlets by officials in the US and Taiwan.

A visit by the House speaker, second in the presidential line of succession, would make Pelosi the highest-ranking US official to visit the self-governing island in a quarter-century.&nbsp;

China, which claims Taiwan as its own province, has threatened unspecified consequences for the U.S. if&nbsp; Pelosi makes the trip. In other words, Pelosi’s anticipated visit keeps both China and the U.S. on the edge.&nbsp;

This trip has both serious ramifications. The sharp warnings from Beijing, implying that the visit could provoke a military response from China, have Washington on high alert. The US military has made preparations to protect Pelosi during the visit, while officials scramble to interpret Beijing’s intimidation.&nbsp;

On a domestic level, this could mar the chance of a November re-election for Biden as the current issue would shift focus from his economic agenda.

Pelosi has a long history of discord with China. She has been one of the most outspoken critics of China. She opposed China’s bid to host the summer Olympics in 2008 and has pushed the U.S. to leverage its economic power to improve human rights and labour protections in China. Her advocacy helped ensure oversight of China when it joined the World Trade Organisation

During a visit to China in 2009, Pelosi hand-delivered a letter to the then president, Hu Jintao, demanding the release of political prisoners.

“She’s not viewing Taiwan through the lens of what’s happening right now,” said Daniel Silverberg, a former foreign policy adviser to House Democratic leadership. “She’s viewing it through the lens of a 30-year history of activism.”

Her diplomacy took on an even greater prominence during Donald Trump’s years as a counterweight to the former President’s isolationist policies.&nbsp;

Political observers feel that Pelosi’s&nbsp; early decades of advocacy have&nbsp; colored her view of US foreign policy.&nbsp; “If we don’t speak out against human rights violations in China for commercial reasons,” Pelosi has said, “we lose all moral authority to speak out for human rights anywhere.”

After Pelosi's plane landed in Taiwan, Beijing released a statement where it slammed USA's actions as 'dangerous'.

<blockquote>
"The United States... constantly distorts, obscures and hollows out the 'One China' principle.&nbsp;These moves, like playing with fire, are extremely dangerous. Those who play with fire will perish by it." said the Chinese foreign ministry.

Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is the first high-ranking official visit from the US in&nbsp;25 years and comes at a time when ties between the US and China are already at an all-time low.

Meanwhile, in anticipation of a Chinese attack,&nbsp;for the first time since the 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis, the island nation has issued 'Level 2'&nbsp;Combat Readiness.

Reportedly, several Chinese warplanes flew close to the median line dividing the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday. These jets performed tactical&nbsp;moves of briefly "touching" the strait before returning. However, after Pelosi's landing, the Chinese actions are expected to intensify.&nbsp;

Remarking that her and the congressional delegation's visit to Taiwan didn't contradict any US policy, Pelosi stated, "Our visit is one of several Congressional delegations to Taiwan – and it in no way contradicts longstanding United States policy, guided by the Taiwan Relations Act of 1979, U.S.-China Joint Communiques and the Six Assurances." "The United States... constantly distorts, obscures and hollows out the 'One China' principle. These moves, like playing with fire, are extremely dangerous. Those who play with fire will perish by it." said the Chinese foreign ministry. Pelosi's visit to Taiwan is the first high-ranking official visit from the US in 25 years and comes at a time when ties between the US and China are already at an all-time low. Meanwhile, in anticipation of a Chinese attack, for the first time since the 1996 Taiwan Strait Crisis, the island nation has issued 'Level 2' Combat Readiness. Reportedly, several Chinese warplanes flew close to the median line dividing the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday. These jets performed tactical moves of briefly "touching" the strait before returning. However, after Pelosi's landing, the Chinese actions are expected to intensify. (This is a developing story. More details to follow) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

Chinese planes and warships positioned near line dividing Taiwan Strait ahead of Nancy Pelosi visit: Report

Guy Reffitt, the individual accused of bringing a gun to the US Capitol building and threating Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi&nbsp;during the January 6 riots, was sentenced to more than seven years in prison on Monday. This was the longest prison sentence handed to anyone in the ongoing trials regarding the riots and the federal judge said that the accused’s “reluctance to admit early that his behaviour is illegal is concerning”.

"Mr. Reffitt's reluctance to admit early that his behaviour is illegal is concerning. And I want to be very clear ... under no legitimate definition of the term 'patriot' (does) Mr. Reffitt's behaviour on and around January 6 fit the term. It is the antithesis of the word," District Judge Dabney Friedrich said in the official judgement.

"The officers at the Capitol are the patriots, as well as those who fought and even died to protect our democracy, our rule of law ... those in the mob are not. Not only are they not patriots, they're a direct threat to our democracy and will be punished as such," he added according to CNN.

The jury convinced Reffitt on five charges - transporting and carrying a firearm on Capitol grounds, interfering with Capitol Police and obstructing an official proceeding, according to the CNN report.

The accused shot videos inside the US Capitol building while holding a gun and that was used against him as evidence. Prosecutor Jeffrey Nestler argued that Reffitt wanted to cause harm to the elected officials and asked the judge to announce a strict prison sentence in all riot-related cases.

"We do believe he is a domestic terrorist," Nestler said according to the CNN report.

Underscoring the international tensions surrounding House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s potential visit to Taiwan, the White House said Friday that there is no reason for China and the US “to come to blows”.

During the press briefing, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby was asked if the US has noticed any Chinese military preparations due to her travel plans.

“There’s no reason for it to come to that, to come to blows, to come to increased physical tension,” he said.

Kirby’s statement comes after Chinese President Xi Jinping warned US President Joe Biden not to “play with fire” by supporting Taiwan.

Citing security concerns, Pelosi and her aides have not confirmed her travel plans or named the countries she might visit during an Asia trip.

Warning of “resolute and strong measures” if she does, China has objected strenuously to any Taiwan visit by Pelosi.

With some Republicans urging her to visit Taiwan as a show of standing up to Beijing, Pelosi’s itinerary has also become a domestic political issue.

Although American presidents rarely deny requests by lawmakers to the military for supplying aircraft, in 2019 Donald Trump blocked Pelosi and other lawmakers from using a military plane to visit Afghanistan.

Experts believed that the decision was made by Trump after she told him to delay his State of the Union address.

No need to come to blows, says White House on Pelosi’s potential visit to Taiwan

US Congress passes long-awaited bill to boost chipmakers, compete with China

U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese Leader Xi Jinping spoke at length Thursday morning amid a potential visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan, which Beijing has warned would “be met with forceful responses.” White House Bureau Chief Patsy Widakuswara has this report.

WION-VOA Co-Production: Will U.S. House speaker visit Taiwan?

China on Wednesday (July 27) warned that the US will "bear the consequences" if House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan. Tensions between US and China are rising ahead of a phone call that's expected between US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. China has assumed an aggressive tone after last week's report that Pelosi might visit Taiwan in August.

China claims Taiwan as its own territory and has not ruled out use of force to assert control on the self-ruled island. Chinese military aircraft have repeatedly forayed into Taiwan's Air Defence Zone (ADZ).

The phone call between Biden and Xi this week. Pelosi's possible visit is expected to dominate conversation between two leaders.

If it indeed takes place, Pelosi's visit would be the first to Taiwan by a sitting US House speaker since 1997. China has already said that it was "getting ready" for Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

"We are firmly opposed to Speaker Pelosi's visit to Taiwan," Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a regular press conference on Wednesday.

"If the US pushes ahead and challenges China's bottom line... the US side will bear all the consequences," he added.

Pelosi herself has not yet confirmed her plans to visit Taiwan.

It also comes at an especially fraught time as Chinese President Xi Jinping prepares to cement his rule later this year at a major party meeting amid economic headwinds.

Last week Biden said the US military thought a visit was "not a good idea right now".
