According to San Francisco police, DePape committed a targeted act on Friday when he allegedly broke into the 82-year-old Pelosis' house. The speaker wasn't at home at the time; instead, she was in Washington, DC, where she always travels with a security detail.

After telling the intruder that he had to use the restroom, Pelosi called 911 on his phone, which was charging there, and requested that cops come check on him, according to Politico.

At around 2.30 am on Friday, when police arrived at the Pelosis' home, they saw Paul Pelosi and DePape both grabbing at a hammer. Officers immediately arrested DePape, who had apparently planned to tie up Paul Pelosi until the speaker of the House returned home.

Rudd, who studied in Taiwan, said he has seen Taipei evolve over the years and he believes that it has become less secure due to Pelosi's visit because the People's Republic of China has now normalised a new set of military drills in its close vicinity and around it.

According to Rudd, if China successfully takes control over Taiwan, it will be emboldened and Jinping will take advantage and double down.

When asked about how the Chinese leadership views India, Rudd, who has worked closely with Jinping, answered that it recognises New Delhi as an ancient civilisation like their own.

Pointing out the similarities between India and China, Rudd said they both have been invaded several times and faced external security threats.

Praising Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Rudd said he has been elected two times with a thumping majority and has redirected India's strategic policy which has been acutely manifested in Quad.&nbsp;

Rudd said that the Indian economy is growing robustly at six to seven per cent annually despite the coronavirus pandemic while China's growth rate is slowing due to self-induced reasons.

Pelosi's visit to Taiwan has made the island less secure, says former Australian PM Kevin Rudd

Paul Pelosi, the husband of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, pleaded guilty on Tuesday (August 23) to drinking and driving in May, US media reported. The 82-year-old crashed his Porsche in Napa County, California, in May 2022. Paul admitted that he was driving under the influence of alcohol and causing injury.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Judge Joseph Solga announced the judgement sentencing him to five days in jail prison.&nbsp;But he will not serve any jail time as he will receive credit for two days that he has already served.&nbsp;

After the accident happened on May 28, the night Paul spent in jail will count for two days. The other two days have been taken off for good behaviour.&nbsp;

Notably, Paul will be on probation for three years and he will also pay upwards of $1,700 in fines. Restitution to remain in the court's jurisdiction and also his attendance in drinking-driver class for three months.&nbsp;

Paul was not in the court when the judgement was announced and he was represented by Amanda Bevins, who is his lawyer.&nbsp;

As per a collision report from the California Highway Patrol, Paul had been attempting to cross SR-29 in late May when his 2021 Porsche was hit by a 2014 Jeep, which was travelling northbound on the road. The report mentioned that the vehicles "sustained major collision damage.”&nbsp;

He had pleaded not guilty.&nbsp;

The complaint noted that Paul was driving his vehicle "under the influence of an alcoholic beverage and a drug and under their combined influence."&nbsp;

As US lawmakers led by senator Ed Markey wrapped up the second US congressional delegation just weeks after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, the Chinese daily 'Global Times' accused the US media of 'historical nihilism ' by distorting Taiwan's history.&nbsp;

"Washington elites fantasize about crossing China's red line using "salami slicing" approach, but the existence of "Taiwan secessionist" regime is the salami that will be eventually cut by history." said the Chinese mouthpiece.&nbsp;

In military parlance, 'salami slicing', also known as 'cabbage strategy' refers to the divide and conquer process of threats and alliances used to overcome opposition and the means by which, the aggressor can influence and ultimately dominate a landscape.&nbsp;

In China's context, salami slicing refers to its strategy of acquiring new territories, at the expense of its neighbours. The Doklam standoff, the capture of Aksai-chin, and the annexation of Tibet are only a few out of many, yet glaring examples of China's aggressive foreign policy and expansionist policy.&nbsp;

In 1996, a United States Institute of Peace report on the territorial disputes in the South China Sea wrote, "[…] analysts point to Chinese "salami tactics," in which China is said to test the other claimants through aggressive actions, then back off when it meets significant resistance."&nbsp;

The term was coined by Stalinist dictator Mátyás Rákosi during the 1940s. He used the term to justify the actions of the Hungarian Communist Party to grab complete power in Hungary.&nbsp;

Tibet was an independent state after the fall of the Qing dynasty. In 1950, the People's Liberation Army entered Tibet and occupied the entire kingdom militarily. China seized Paracel Islands in 1974 from Vietnam and built Sansha City on the island to legitimise its illegal claim.

The acquisition of the Paracel Islands was followed by the capture of the Johnson Reef from Vietnam in 1988, the Mischief Reef in 1995, and the Scarborough Shoal in 2012; both from the Philippines in the South China Sea.&nbsp;

Recent skirmishes include the dispute over Senkaku islands, which China calls 'Diaoyu' and has been regularly sailing its coast guard into Japanese territorial waters.

The presence of more than 200 Chinese fishing vessels in the Whitsun reef caused the Philippines and Vietnam to file diplomatic protests against China, with the Philippines alleging that this 'is a prelude to a Chinese takeover of the maritime feature'.

The buck doesn't only stop here. Other than territorial claims, economic coercions like debt-trap diplomacy is also a feature of the modus operandi. Pakistan, Tajikistan, Malaysia, and several other African countries are overwhelmed with unsustainable loans and have been forced to cede strategic leverage to china.&nbsp;

The docking of Yuan Wang 5, a vessel capable of extensive surveillance at the Hambantota port of Sri Lanka proves China's financial and strategic muscle. The Yuan Wang 5, a ballistic missile and satellite tracking ship is a security concern for India as several ports in Tamil Nadu, Kerala will be on the ship's radar once it docks at Hambantota.

Sri Lanka tried, without success to ward off the ship but instead had to defer the dates of docking. Facing what is arguably its worst economic crisis, Sri Lanka can only be bailed out by IMF loans and a debt restructuring program, but Beijing so far has refused to reduce its loans.&nbsp;

The divide and conquer tactic is effective over a longer period of time as it presents the target with only two choices: either silently suffering China's salami slicing, or risking an expensive and dangerous war with China. The absence of strong responses from China's adversaries had also facilitated its takeover of territories, especially in the South China sea.

However, China's recent expeditions have triggered strong responses from its adversaries, notably in the case of Taiwan. Countries are increasingly seeking to form partnerships to counter China’s growing power.

For example, The Quad, the Australia-Japan-India-US alliance, seems to have been revitalised. The rise in Defence expenditure is also a growing response. Taiwan, Japan and Australia have increased defence budgets with Japan investing in the development of stealth fighters and long-range missiles. The US has also increased its presence in the Indo pacific.

China has said it will be blacklisting seven 'secessionist' Taiwan officials over their alleged support for the self-ruled island’s independence. As its adversaries adopt a resoluteness to counter the security policies, it is to be seen whether China's salami slicing will be effective anymore because of its bolder and at times clumsy moves which have resulted in thick slices unable to cut through.&nbsp;

China's salami-slicing tactics going wrong?

A second US delegation has arrived in Taiwan on an unannounced two-day visit. They are all set to meet Taiwan's president Tsai Ing-wen on Monday.

This is the second time that the delegation from the US Congress arrived in Taipei in a month, after Speaker House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the region, which created a huge uproar in China.

According to the Taiwanese media, the new five-member delegation arrived for the talks, but details of the meeting were not immediately released. The delegation was due to depart later Monday on a US government plane.

Massachusetts Democratic Senator Ed Markey, who is part of the delegation, in a statement, said that the US team is visiting “the self-governing island in an effort to reaffirm the United States' support for Taiwan" and "will encourage stability and peace across the Taiwan Strait," reports CNN.

The delegation includes Democratic Reps. John Garamendi, Alan Lowenthal and Don Beyer, and Republican Rep. Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen.

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the delegation will meet with Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen and Foreign Minister Joseph Wu and will also hold discussions with the Taiwanese parliament's Foreign Affairs and National Defence committee on security and trade issues, reports CNN.

In the aftermath of the visit, tensions have grown between the two nations and China has&nbsp;been conducting military drills around the border separating the Taiwan Strait.

The delegation, led by Senator Ed Markey&nbsp;and comprising four other lawmakers, will be visiting a number of countries in the Indo-Pacific region, the de facto U.S. embassy in Taipei said.

"Especially at a time when China is raising tensions in the Taiwan Strait and the region with military exercises, Markey leading a delegation to visit Taiwan once again demonstrates the United States Congress' firm support for Taiwan," it said in a statement according to Reuters.

The US authorities have said that the main intention behind the visit is to “reaffirm the United States’ support for Taiwan as guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, U.S.-China Joint Communiques, and Six Assurances, and will encourage stability and peace across the Taiwan Strait."

Meanwhile, China kept conducting military drills with as many as eleven aircrafts crossing the Taiwan border on Sunday, according to an official statement released by the defence ministry.

Reportedly, in an interview with NBC’s ‘TODAY’ show, Pelosi not only put her weight behind the ‘one China’ policy but also made the unfortunate gaffe that has caught the internet’s attention.&nbsp;

“We still support the ‘one China’ policy, we go there to acknowledge the status quo is what our policy is, there is nothing disruptive about that. It was only about saying, China is one of the freest societies in the world, don’t take it from me, that’s from Freedom House, it’s a strong democracy, courageous people,” said Pelosi.

Taiwanese foreign minister Joseph Wu on Tuesday accused China of using air and sea drills encircling the island to prepare for an invasion and to change the status quo in the Asia-Pacific region.

"China has used the drills and its military playbook to prepare for the invasion of Taiwan," Wu said while addressing a press conference in Taipei, reports AFP.

He added, "It is conducting large-scale military exercises and missile launches, as well as cyber-attacks, a disinformation campaign and economic coercion in order to weaken public morale in Taiwan."

The minister also condemned China of continuing with its drills on Monday despite assuring that it would end a day earlier. He said that the PLA’s military exercise hindered one of the busiest shipping and air routes in the world.

Wu's press conference came hours after the Taiwanese military held its own live-fire drill to prepare against a potential invasion of the island.

Taiwan's Eighth Army Corps spokesman Lou Woei-jye said the military exercise began in the southern county of Pingtung shortly after 0040 GMT with the firing of target flares and artillery.

The military drill is expected to end at around 0130 GMT, he added.

Taipei's drills, which will again take place on Thursday, include the deployment of hundreds of troops and about 40 howitzers, the army said.

Though Taipei’s drills came hours after China ended their war games, Lou maintained that the military exercise was taking place as scheduled and not being held in response to China's exercises.

Taiwan routinely conducts military drills simulating a Chinese invasion. Last month, the island practised repelling attacks from the sea in a "joint interception operation" as part of its largest annual exercises.

Meanwhile, it comes days after China’s People's Liberation Army (PLA) began conducting military drills encircling Taiwan last Thursday in a furious response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the island, the most high-level from the US to Taiwan in 25 years. The visit angered China as it saw the visit as a violation of the “One China Policy”.

The war games focused on six zones that essentially encircled Taiwan, restricting access to civilian ships and aircraft in the area, as forces conducted live-fire drills and missile launches.
