Dhoni's trust in Perera's abilities gave him the confidence to go after the bowlers.

“I remember a special incident with MS Dhoni for Rising Pune Supergiants, in 2016, and that is where I felt that Dhoni is like my brother. In one of the matches, we were 35-5, and I came down to bat. MS was the non-striker," Perera recalled in an interview with News9.

"He walked up to me and said, ‘Hi, TP. Let’s just bat’. I defended my first ball and he comes to me knocking the pitch – ‘Hey, TP. What are you doing?’ I said, ‘I am just watching the ball.’ The reply from him was very special, something which I didn’t expect with the sort of scorecard we were having at that time. ‘No, no. I picked you because you can hit the ball miles away. Go explode,” the former Sri Lanka all-rounder went on to reveal.

Dhoni, who retired from international cricket in 2020, continues to lead CSK in the IPL and led them to a memorable title triumph last year. Dhoni has led CSK to a stunning nine finals in just twelve seasons, a testament to his remarkable leadership qualities.

Perera said Dhoni is one of the best captains he has played under and it was special to play under his captaincy for the Pune franchise in IPL.

“And from there on, I was just hitting every ball. I got around 18-ball 40 or something, which took the momentum away from the opposition. MS played until the 20th over and we scored around 170 or 180 from 35-5. And that is why it is always special to play under MS. He is one of the best captains, I have played under in my career,” said the former Sri Lanka all-rounder.

Dhoni has been retained by CSK ahead of the IPL mega auction this year and will be back leading the franchise in the new season.

Speaking to veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on his Youtube channel, Chahal recently revealed an episode where he was thrashed left, right and centre during a India-South Africa T20I, 2018, and how Dhoni came to his rescue. He said,&nbsp;"Once, I got hit for 64 runs in a T20I against South Africa in 2018; (Heinrich) Klaasen had smashed me all over the park. Then Mahi (Dhoni) bhai had asked me to come around the wicket. I did exactly that but he hit me for a six over the biggest boundary at mid-wicket."

"Then Mahi bhai came to me and I said, ‘Yes Mahi bhai, ab kya karna hai? (What should I do now?). He said ‘Kuch nahi, mai to waisehi aagaya tere paas&nbsp;(Nothing, I just came to check upon you). Chahal bowled his most expensive spell in the shortest format, 4-0-64-0 during the second and penultimate T20I between both sides in South Africa in early 2018. The 30-year-old further asserted that had someone scolded him after leaking runs at will, it would have affected him severely but Dhoni chose to lift his spirits. "If someone scolds you at that time, your confidence goes down even further. But he told me that it's just one match as you did so well in ODIs. I also realized that in cricket sometimes you do well and sometimes you don't," he added.

Australian great Ian Chappell lauded Virat Kohli for his remarkable leadership qualities after his decision to step down as the Test captain of the Indian team earlier this month. Kohli decided o quit as India's Test captain post the team's 2-1 loss against South Africa away from home.

Comparing Kohli and Root as captains, Chappell pointed out how one has been excellent at his job while the other has been a failure. Root-led England were recently hammered by Australia in the Ashes 2021-22. England failed to win even one game in the five-match series as they lost 4-0 against the hosts.

Root has since been facing intense criticism from all corners and questions have been raised on his leadership. Pointing out the contrasts in the captaincy styles of Root and Kohli, Chappell credited the former Indian captain for leading the team to tremendous success overseas and carrying forward the legacy of both MS Dhoni and Sourav Ganguly.

"This is a tale of two cricket captains; one very good at his job and the other a failure," Chappell wrote in his column for ESPN Cricinfo.

"There's no doubt Kohli was an exception as captain; he didn't curb his enthusiasm but he was still able to lead the Indian team to a higher level. With the capable assistance of vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, he lifted India to overseas success as no other captain had done.

Ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction next month, Dorjee, a fast-bowling all-rounder shared a picture and a video of his meeting with the legendary MS Dhoni, and revealed a piece of advice from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain. Dhoni is one of the most successful captains in IPL history with four titles under his belt.

Dorji had met Dhoni during his time with the MRF Pace Foundation in Chennai. “'Keep it simple. Focus more on the process and less on the results. If you get the process right you will get the result. The forthcoming IPL 2022 edition will see two more teams join the existing eight franchises, in the form of Lucknow Super Giants and the Ahmedabad franchise. He had replaced Dhoni as the captain after the latter missed the game due to a thumb injury. However, little did Kohli know that he was destined to become India's permanent Test captain in the same series.

Kohli had recalled how he broke the news to his now better half Anushka Sharma that he will be the permanent captain of the Indian Test team as Dhoni had decided to quit. Kohli revealed he broke down that night as he had never thought he will get to lead India in the oldest format of the game one day.

"Honestly, I was not able to think that I am going to be the Test captain now," Kohli remembered of that day. "After things calmed down a bit, I went to my room.
