Perhaps because of the controversies around him, people may have shied from making a film. Michael comes decades after MJ’s death and caters to an audience which never grew up to his music and has only heard about his greatness and dark deeds from older siblings or parents. The film thus fails to connect with the audience, with the screenplay stating the obvious and never exploring deeper into his life or the craze around his voice. Go and watch Michael if you are a fan of his music, like me. Or go and witness a young actor like Jaafar Jackson own the screen with his performance. But be warned, the film does not leave a lasting impression like MJ’s music has done for decades."

Also Read: Michael: All that you need to know about Michael Jackson's biopic

About Michael

The biographical drama showcases Michael Jackson's journey from performing with the Jackson 5 to becoming one of the most influential entertainers in the world.

The singer's role is played by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, while Colman Domingo and Nia Long portray his parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson.

The family and the estate of Michael Jackson had struck a secret agreement whereby the family would be paid around $16 million over the course of five years. Reportedly, when the payments were halted in 2025, a round of negotiations failed, post which a lawsuit has been filed. Michael Jackson's estate response to the allegations against the singer Reportedly, a lawyer for the estate, Marty Singer, has released a statement, per the report of The Hollywood Reporter, calling it the family's efforts for a desperate money grab and stating, "The family staunchly defended Michael Jackson for more than 25 years, attesting to his innocence of inappropriate conduct. This new court filing is a transparent forum-shopping tactic in their scheme to obtain hundreds of millions of dollars from Michael's estate and companies." Michael Jackson sexual abuse allegations: Second family of late pop icon share new details

To understand the hysteria that once surrounded the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, one must be from that era. The pop legend’s biopic Michael comes nearly two decades after his passing. The man who had, in the later years, withdrawn himself from the public owing to a spate of controversies, was a conflicting personality. One that would amuse, shock and entertain in equal measure. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the biopic, which marks the acting debut of the late singer’s nephew Jaafar Jackson in the titular role, presents a very sanitised version of Michael Jackson and his rise to stardom. The film is backed by the late singer’s family and close aides, and perhaps that’s the reason that the film is so one-dimensional in its approach.

Plot of Michael

The film begins in Gary, Indiana, where Michael is a 10-year-old (Juliano Krude Valdi) practising with his brothers as part of Jackson 5. The family band was managed by the authoritarian patriarch of the family, Joe Jackson (Colman Domingo), who ran a tight rein on the boys, particularly on the young MJ. The senior Jackson wanted a way out from the ordinary life he provided his family and thus trained his gifted sons to become one of the most popular bands of the 1960s. As Michael grows up, it is obvious that he is the most talented in the family. He breaks out as a solo artist, much to the discomfort of his father.

A still from the film Michael

The film also highlights Michael Jackson’s rise to stardom in the 1970s as a solo artist and his superstardom post the mamoth success of Thriller, his comeback after a life-threatening accident during the Victory Tour in 1984.

What works and what does not

If you have followed the journey of Michael Jackson, the artist, right from his early days as part of the Jackson 5 to his early career as an independent black artist breaking the glass ceiling and emerging as a prominent name in the music world, Michael offers a good dollop of nostalgia. Jackson’s early hits have been used in dollops and the film also shows the story behind Thriller and how Michael pushed for its broadcast on MTV, breaking the white supremacy.

The film is led by debutant actor Jaafar Jackson, who nails his late uncle's mannerisms to the T, at least in the stage performances. Jaafar has an uncanny similarity with MJ, and with the help of prosthetics, looks like a young singer who had the entire world swooning over his dance moves and beats.

Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackon

Jaafar shines as Michael and makes the concert scenes come alive. I watched the film on IMAX and felt like I was watching a live concert. Playing MJ on the big screen is no mean feat, irrespective of the fact that you are related to him. But the young actor gets the voice modulations, the moon walk, and his break dancing skills accurately.

The other star who shines is child actor Juliano Krude Valdi, who plays the young MJ. The young actor is particularly good in the scenes where he is reprimanded and hit with a belt by his onscreen father. Valdi shows fear and hurt through his eyes in those scenes, which makes your heart go out for the little guy.

While performances are top-notch, the film is choppy and not well-written. It talks in great detail about Michael’s early years as part of the Jackson 5. The first half an hour of the film is a drag and fails to hold one’s attention despite Valdi’s credible performance. The second half also skims through a lot of MJ’s life and doesn't properly highlight any of the milestones well.

The biggest issue with the film is that it never addresses the controversies that haunted a greater part of MJ’s life. Neverland is shown as a magical place, he is shown as the messiah who loves and helps ailing kids by spending time with them and buying them toys, and one cannot overlook that scene without thinking of the charges of child molestation that the singer had to face. He created his Neverland, which many feel, in later years, was the hub of all notoriety. But in the film, it's a magical place, where he finds happiness.

Michael, ultimately, is a homage to a talented brother by his siblings. It's a personal film, perhaps for the family, which projects the father as the main villain in Michael’s life and no one else. The biopic whitewashes Michael’s image to a large extent. The film also fails to establish well why he became the King of Pop, why there was so much hysteria around him.

Also read: Michael Jackson biopic: Lesser-known facts about the King of Pop ahead of release

Final Verdict

A man who broke boundaries with his music and moves deserved a biopic long ago.

Michael ends with a hint of part two, and one can be hopeful that in the next part, perhaps, the writing will dig deeper into the enigma that MJ was and also address some of the controversies around him and his personal life. Go and watch Michael if you are a fan of his music, like me. Or go and witness a young actor like Jaafar Jackson own the screen with his performance. But be warned, the film does not leave a lasting impression like MJ’s music has done for decades.

From Michael Jackson's jackets to Noel Gallagher's guitars, music memorabilia will head to auction next month in a sale estimated to raise around 2 million pounds (USD 2.61 million). Entertainment memorabilia auctioneer Propstore is offering more than 350 music items used by or that once belonged to megastars at its Nov. 15 sale, as part of a four-day event that will also sell film and television props and costumes. Highlights from the music lots include a Jimi Hendrix master tape featuring four unreleased demo recordings in a box on which the musician wrote their titles. Framed "Beat It" lyrics, handwritten by Jackson, will also go under the hammer, as will some of his jackets. A black and gold military style one has a price estimate of 200,000 - 400,000 pounds (USD 261,000 – USD 522,000), while his red Thriller tour rehearsal jacket comes complete with multiple famous signatures. "It has been not only signed by Michael, but on the inside, on the back lining, it's signed by John Landis, who... directed the ‘Thriller’ video, and his wife, Deborah Landis, who designed the jacket for Michael to wear," Propstore's music specialist Mark Hochman told Reuters. "(At the) end of the day, it's a ‘Thriller’ jacket that Michael’s worn." This includes his first while with the band, a cream Hohner JT60 (estimate 25,000 - 50,000 pounds), it said. “Oasis guitars do come up for auction... primarily they’re Noel’s guitars and they're hugely sought after by collectors," Hochman said. "The (Oasis) reunion has taken that interest to a different level.”
Rahman recently took part in a fan meet and greet event where he spoke about his meeting with the legendary pop star months before his death.

In a video by Free Malaysia Today, Rahman revealed how he met Jackson shortly after winning an Oscar for Slumdog Millionaire.

Rahman revealed he was in Los Angeles, USA, in early 2009 when he met someone who managed Michael.

"I asked if I could meet him. An email was sent out but there was no response for a week. Then, I got nominated for the Oscars (for Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire). Michael’s team said he wanted to meet me. I said, I don’t want to meet him now. I’ll meet him when I’ve won an Oscar,” said Rahman.

When he did win the Oscar, he explained the feeling as ‘top of the world’. “I met him at a home in LA the day after I won it. He was very kind, we spoke about music and world peace. He said, why don’t we do the next We Are The World, introduced me to his kids. He even showed me how he dances from the heart,” Rahman said.

Rahman eventually came back to India and told filmmaker Shankar about his meeting Micheal. Shankar asked the composer if the pop legend would sing for Enthiran.

“Shankar sir asked me if he would sing for the film. I said, wow, will he sing a Tamil song? I asked. He said, whatever you say, we’ll do it together.

The plan never materialised as Michael died in June of that year. “He was sick at that time,” said Rahman.

The OST of Enthiran featured no international singers, but it went on to be a massive success. The sequel of the film 2.0, featured music by Rahman as well and was released in 2018. The film featured Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar and Amy Jackson.

Shankar on Rahman’s absence in Indian 2

Shankar and Rahman have worked on numerous projects together, including the 1996 Kamal Haasan-starrer Indian. The sequel, Indian 2, however, features music by Anirudh Ravichander. When asked about it at a recent press meeting, Shankar said that he approached Anirudh because Rahman was busy.

“When we started work on Indian 2, AR Rahman was already working on the BGM of 2.0 and I needed the songs soon. I didn’t want to overburden him with Indian 2 and I also liked Anirudh’s music. His music was really popular and I thought, why not sign him on,” explained Shankar.

Michael Jackson's production company, MJJ Productions, doesn't want his accusers, Wade Robson and James Safechuck, to access the late pop star's police records. The company filed court documents on Wednesday (April 3) in the Superior Court of Los Angeles, seeking to block Robson and Safechuck's requests, claiming they are looking to obtain "photographs of Michael Jackson’s genitalia and naked body taken by police."
