Kashmir: Artisan makes traditional Namda with a new twist | India

Kashmiri artisan, Farooq Khan, has blended Kashmiri traditional art with Australia's nuno felting technique and created unique products found nowhere in the world. Khan is the only nuno felting artisan in India and has been able to unite the two crafts together to give a new life to the traditional crafts of Kashmir. Nuno felting is a technique that bonds loose fibre, usually sheep's wool, into sheer fabric like silk, etc.

It was developed in Australia decades ago and now a Kashmiri artisan has incorporated the same technique while making traditional Kashmiri Namda and silk scarves. It took Khan months to learn the craft and later make unique products now sold across the world.

''I started learning this technique four years ago and I have been selling these products for the last two years. I was helped by an organisation called Connect to Kashmir, which showed me how nuno felting was done. Then I tried mixing the two techniques for making a Kashmiri Namda. I failed the first time, tried the second time, and failed again. I knew I would be able to do it but needed time and every day after finishing my work every day, I used to sit and work on it, and finally, after two years I was able to make the products. I have made jackets, silk scarves, namdas, and shawls which are extremely light,'' said Khan.

Khan's family has been in Namda making crafts for decades, and it was his own curiosity that led to so many new designs and techniques being incorporated into the traditional art of Kashmir. He says that he doesn't sell these products at expensive prices as he loves making them.

''I have been making Namda since my childhood. I learned the craft from my Dad and uncle as they were artisans of Namda too. I was working in Kargil and saw a Namda there which led to a little curiosity about making something new. It didn't take me much time to learn, but I failed a lot of times before making it a success. I am extremely happy that I am making new things, I don't even sell these products at very expensive rates, as making them gives me the most happiness. ''said Farooq Khan, Artisan.

Khan has been working on these new additions and techniques with a private craft organization and is not happy with the government for not providing any support to further boost this craft. Khan has to travel outside Kashmir valley to get the raw material for making these products. He says that he went to the government many times asking for making the raw material available to the artisans in the valley. But no one has done anything about it.

''The main issue is the wool. They have great quality wool and yarn in a country like Nepal, but we don't have anything available in Kashmir. The government is not helping us at all. I wanted colored wool for making these products and went to the government many times to make it available to the artisans in the valley. But they have not done it. We have to go to Ludhiana to get this and that too has to be bought in bulk even when making samples. It is a very expensive deal for us, and I had requested the government to make it available so that we could buy from them. '' said Farooq Khan, Artisan.

Kashmir region was named among the most creative cities of the world by UNESCO. The valley has an abundant heritage of art and craft and one such craft is glazed pottery. The glazed tiles and other items have been made here for centuries but the art was at the verge of extinction.

There is only one Kashmiri artisan, Ghulam Mohammad Kumar, left making these glazed tiles in the valley, and to give a tribute to his rich legacy and art, A local Kashmiri architect Zoya Khan organised an exhibition in collaboration with Department of handicrafts in Srinagar's Government Arts Emporium. Zoya has been learning the craft from Kumar for the last two years and also making sure that the art doesn't die.

Kumar, lives in Srinagar's Khanyar area where he is the lone artisan still making these glazed tiles.

Now the government has promised me that they will provide me with a space where I can teach it to other children. I am sure I will take this to young people. People shifted from pottery as it wasn't that lucrative, I still live in our ancestral house as there was no help ever from anyone. '' said Ghulam Mohammad Kumar.

Zoya has been taking these pictures over the last two years that she has spent learning and preserving the art form from Kumar. She wants to reach out to as many people about this art form. And through these pictures, she is making sure to reach out to the younger generation and attract them towards this art form. While working with Kumar, she has incorporated these Kashmir tiles in various projects across the region. With only one motive, to educate the young generation about the craft so that it lives forever.

''My exhibition is called the 'Last Craftsman' because Haji saab is the last craftsman who is making these khanyari tiles in the valley. They were a very important component of our residential houses, the vernacular Architecture in the cold city, these were a very important component of that. The demand completely faded. What is most fascinating is the person who makes it, his traditional knowledge, he is such a wealth of information, and the way he describes his colors, the way he sits in his karkhana, birthing these tiles there is just the most fascinating thing. I started procuring these tiles for my project but later it was so fascinating that I learnt the craft from him. '' said Zoya Khan, architect and artist.

These artists believe that if they don't re-engage with such artisans, the art will vanish. That is one of the reasons that a 26-year-old commerce graduate from Srinagar's Nishat area, Mohamad Omar has been training with Kumar to learn the art and keep it alive. But unfortunately, this art form was not in good health due to the modern tiles in the market. By virtue of this intervention, we launched a scheme in 2020, to revive the languishing crafts. And we were very happy to connect the oldest and last surviving craftsman with a young entrepreneur who has made a successful intervention and he has revived the art form. He has repackaged it. Terrorists including LeT commander killed in twin operations in south Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir Police has said that 40 foreign terrorists have been killed in the Kashmir region in 2022 so far. Most of these terrorists belonged to either Lashkar-e-Taiba or Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfits. The director-general of Jammu and Kashmir Police said that most of the leadership of these terror outfits has been wiped out.

He also said that there has been an evident drop in the terror outfit recruitments in the Kashmir Valley. And there is a leadership crisis among these terror groups in the Valley.

"We have managed to destroy the structure of these terror outfits. Pakistan always wants foreign terrorists to hold command of outfits like Lashkar and Jaish. But we have had successful operations this year in which around 40 foreign Pakistani terrorists have been neutralised in various operations. Pakistan is still trying to infiltrate more terrorists into the region and some of these attempts have been successful and we are keeping an eye on that too and soon they will be dismantled too," said J&K DGP Dilbagh Singh.

The DGP also said that since the winter is approaching, there would be more attempts by Pakistan to send across foreign terrorists into the Kashmir Valley.

"The terrorists from across the border will try to infiltrate before the winter and snowfall. But the counter-infiltration grid has been made stronger and no such attempt would be successful," said the DGP.

According to Jammu and Kashmir Police, terror recruitment in the Valley has come down. Police say that they have managed to kill most of the top commanders of the terror outfits and it has led to the terror recruitment taking a hit.

"The youngsters of the valley are preferring to make their careers in various fields. Stone pelting has completely stopped and local terror recruitment too has dropped to almost zero," said Singh.

One of the major concerns for the security forces in the valley are Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The police are working on a strategy.

"IEDs are low cost for terrorists and are in fact part of a new strategy aimed at inflicting maximum damage to forces and less to militants. Consignments airdropped through drones were seized in Jammu," said DGP.

''Our group has done so many trips. When we were thinking about doing something different, it came to our mind to do Kashmir. Whenever we say Kashmir, we say why and the media portrays it as dangerous, but we wanted to explore it ourselves and honestly we don't regret it at all. The whole group loved it. We loved the landscape, great food and good people. You can't imagine how people helped us. We were given free food and snacks by locals in villages. Our friends from Oman are interested and they will be visiting Kashmir soon as well. Bahrain Bikers was started in 2012 and we have almost 130 members and in this trip we have only 18 of us travelling because everyone couldn't make it. We do a lot of social work as well,'' said Mehdi Hassan, Captain, Bahrain Bikers Group.

The group comprised 20 bikers, including two women, the other bikers were mostly from the Gulf and one was from Germany. The bikers took a ride on the road facing Dal Lake.

''We have come from Bahrain to India. To Leh and Kashmir, I cannot even say anything about Kashmir, it's in our hearts, we have loved Kashmir since our childhood. We never came before but always heard about it. It is for real a paradise on earth. We went to the mountains and saw four seasons in a single day. We recommend and request people from across the world to come to Kashmir. They are lovely people and have amazing food. Kashmir is the best and Kashmir is heaven,'' said Abdul Jasim, a biker from Bahrain.

The bikers expressed joy over the hospitality and welcome they received from people in Srinagar. The female bikers found the place safe and extremely challenging with regard to terrain.

''I have been riding with these bikers for a very long time and it's been amazing. When they said they are going to Kashmir, I said I am signing up as well. It's been fantastic. Even though I am Indian, I will go and promote it. I have seen stunning visuals of the place. I am a part of the group of Biker brothers, and it's been quite safe, and they take care of us very well. Dr Aziz has put together this whole event. He had a crew behind us. We were safe and biker brothers are extremely protective of the lady bikers, so we did not have a problem,'' said Priya Shankar, an Indian biker settled in Bahrain.

Pakistan Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa is in the last essay of his stint as the army leader. In the backdrop of the country going through its worst period, both on the economic and human front courtesy of the devastating floods, Bajwa is now batting for peace. Without naming India Bajwa called for the resolution of all bilateral ties.

“We must give peace a chance by developing a mechanism to resolve all our bilateral issues peacefully. Moreover, as opposed to fighting each other, we should collectively fight hunger, poverty, illiteracy, population explosion, climate change and disease,” said Bajwa at the passing-out parade at Pakistan Military Academy in Kakul in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province.

Bajwa, who is expected to retire after his extended six-year tenure in November, however, asserted that the desire for peace must not be construed as weakness.

“I must highlight here that our desire for peace must not be construed as our weakness. No one should make any mistake about our collective resolve to defend our core interests and every inch of our motherland,” he added.

“We are trying our best to break the political logjam which has denied the countries of South Asia to move forward and resolve all regional and bilateral issues in a peaceful and dignified manner.”

However, experts were not too amused with Bajwa's call. Indian Army's Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain stated it wasn't the first time that Bajwa had came up with such lofty statements.

"This is not the first time that General Bajwa has talked about peace with India. But the follow-up has hardly been evident," Lt Gen (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain told WION.

"Whenever you speak about these things, it must be followed with executive direction and some kind of demonstration which unfortunately has been missing," added the army veteran.

While Bajwa batted for a peaceful resolution of the relations, he didn't bring Kashmir into the conversation which experts believe was a rarity from the Pakistani army chief.

In April earlier this year, Bajwa had worked the peaceful resolution of disputes between the two neighbours into his speech but added the Kashmir caveat again.

“Pakistan continues to believe in using dialogue and diplomacy to resolve all outstanding issues including the Kashmir dispute and is ready to move forward on this front if India agrees to do so,” Bajwa said.

While Bajwa may have toned down his rhetoric, it was during his tenure that India-Pakistan had come perilously close to a war after the dastardly Pulwama attack in 2019.

Kashmir Valley has witnessed record-breaking tourist arrivals this year. Government reports say more than 2 million tourists visited the valley in the eight months of 2022. It's after decades that Kashmir is once again attracting millions of tourists and tourism stakeholders are calling it the luckiest year ever.

Over 2 million tourists including Amarnath Yatri's visited the valley in the last 8 months. All the hotels at Srinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg and Sonamarg were fully booked for months. The figures with the government are at an all-time high for tourist's arrivals in the Valley.

''Around 20 lakh tourists have come to Kashmir this year. It's wonderful that it happened. It's a collective effort and I hope it will continue for the coming days as well. 2022 has been a bumper year with regard to tourism. We are hoping the ski lift in Sonamarg will be completed within days and this time Sonamarg will be opened for skiing. We will be keeping it open this winter and promote it as a winter destination. Pahalgam would be preparing for winter as well. We are also planning for Doodhpathri as a winter destination as well. We are hoping the coming winter will see a lot of footfalls,'' said Fazl ul Haseeb, Director of Tourism, Kashmir.

The high arrivals of tourists to the valley have revived the tourism industry of Kashmir which was badly hit due to various reasons in the last few years. With combined efforts of government and tourism stakeholders, the industry has finally witnessed some record-breaking arrivals which in turn helped the economy as well as the employment for the youth of Kashmir.

''The number of tourist arrivals has been record-breaking. In my career of 12-13 years, I have witnessed such a tourist arrival for the first time. This is also the first time that I was receiving 200-300 calls from tourists from across the country every day. They wanted hotels, houseboats, taxi's and we were completely booked. Everything was booked and even this time people had to wait in a queue to get a shikara. We are expecting the number to go further up as the winter approaches. We are already planning for Christmas and New Year's.
