Kashmir region is witnessing a sharp rise in the cases of suicides, suicide attempts and taking extreme steps. A study done recently by one of the government agencies has reported that Post covid around 127 people died by committing suicide in the valley.

The report says more than 365 suicide attempts have been reported in the Kashmir region since Feb 2021. The data prepared by the State Disaster Response Force reveals that 365 attempts of suicide were recorded as 127 persons died after committing suicide, and 238 survived after taking extreme steps.

''We started a mental health helpline called 'Sukoon', where we did a research in the valley where we collected data of how many suicide cases were reported in the Valley, the data which we have with us suggests that since Feb 2021 to June 2022, there have been 365 suicide attempts by people during this period, 127 people died due to suicide and 238 survived these attempts. These are huge figures and post covid there is an increase in the number of suicide attempts. '' said Haseeb Ul Rahman, Commandant SDRF, Kashmir.

The Data also suggests that the highest number of suicide attempts were reported from central Kashmir's Budgam district. Budgam reported 72 suicide attempts while North Kashmir's Baramulla district reported 61. In South Kashmir's Anantnag district 55 suicide attempts were reported while 51 were reported in Kupwara in North Kashmir.

There were 34 suicide attempts reported in North Kashmir's Bandipora. In South Kashmir's Shopian district 19 such attempts were reported while 15 were reported in Pulwama. District Kulgam reported 25 suicide attempts and Srinagar city reported 17.

The data of deaths reported in various districts were also given out. In total 127 people died after taking extreme steps that include 17 in Srinagar, 11 in Ganderbal, 08 in Bandipora, 09 in Shopian, 08 in Pulwama, 11 in Budgam, 31 in Anantnag, 10 in Kulgam, 15 in Baramulla and 07 in Kupwara.

The psychologists in the valley say Post covid stress triggered by various issues like financial, relationship issues and isolation led to taking these extreme steps. The doctors feel the awareness among the youngsters needs to be increased across the Kashmir Valley. The doctors also say that there is a suicide contagion that needs to be prevented.

''There is a concept of suicide contagion, research suggests that if one person dies of suicide it affects 135 people around him. And out of those 135 people, 60 per cent are more vulnerable to thoughts of suicide. That's how we see the suicide contagion spread. Sometimes when it is localised to one particular area, we get more reported cases because of the same phenomena. It is also about treatment seeking, Srinagar has much more treatment seeking options than other places and sometimes it can be because of the lack of treatment options and definitely due to the contagion which spreads. '' said Dr Zoya Mir, Clinical Psychologist, Government of Jammu and Kashmir.

The SDRF is going to submit the report to the Chief Secretary's office in Jammu and Kashmir. And the government is expected to come out with a strategy to tackle the issue.

With improvement in the security situation in the Kashmir Valley, the Indian Navy has revived the Naval training for National Cadets Corps (NCC) after a gap of 33 years. Over 100 cadets of the NCC attended the training on the Manasbal Lake in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district.

The first training activity has been organised for 100 senior NCC cadets, boys and girls, from all districts of the Union territory. The camp will be running till September 26 and prepare the cadets for the forthcoming national level NCC camp at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh commencing on October 2.

''I think it's a momentous occasion that after a gap of 33 years, the NCC cadets of Kashmir region are fortunate to be part of this camp which has started, and will help them train in the naval training activities very close to their homes. Before this, they had to go to Jammu. In the late 1980s, security situation turned grim and we had to shift our training areas. Now with restarting of this exercise at Manasbal, I am sure the NCC training in the valley will get a great fillip,'' said Brigadier K S Kalsi, group commander, NCC cadets.

"The Naval training camps have a number of activities, but this one is specially preparing cadets of J&K and Ladakh for the upcoming national level NCC camp at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh commencing on October 2. These cadets are being trained in boat pulling, sailing, ship modelling and signalling. All of them are very important naval training activities. I have no doubt that all the youth who are going to see these events upfront, or through the media in Kashmir will get motivated,'' added Brigadier Kalsi.

Kashmir is gifted with numerous water bodies and with Manasbal training facility, the NCC cadets of Kashmir will not require to travel to Jammu for training and this will be a big motivation for students to volunteer for NCC. The cadets were extremely happy that the camp is being organised in the valley after decades.

''This training camp has been organised in the valley after a long time, a lot of children from various colleges have come from various parts of the Union territory. I would want other children to come and be a part of these camps. We are being trained in boat pulling, swimming, sailing, and drills. The Navy officers motivate us to join the Indian Navy,'' said Ovais Rashid, a cadet.

The main reason for these cadets to volunteer for the training camps is to join the Indian armed forces like Army, Navy, and Air Force.

''It's a great opportunity for us to be a part of this camp. Due to security reasons, these camps were not held in the Kashmir valley but now they have been restarted and we will get to learn a lot. I want to join the Indian Navy and that's why I have joined NCC,'' said Kiran Chaudhary, a cadet.

In the last three decades, the training was mostly provided to these cadets at Nagrota and Mansar lake in the Jammu region due to terrorist activities, causing huge inconvenience to the cadets from Kashmir Valley.

In the border village of North Kashmir's Gurez sector, close to the Line of Control, the Indian Army has set up a skill development centre to empower local women. The Indian Army has chosen the best location for the skill development centre overlooking the Habba Khatoon Peak in Gurez Valley. These women are being trained in various skills to make them independent.

Habba Khatoon known as 'The Nightingale of Kashmir' was a poet from the 16th century and holds great respect in Kashmir. And there could have been no better inspiration for these women. These women are taught various skills including computers, stitching and other skills.

The main motive of the Indian Army is to make the women independent so that they can start a business of their own. And the women attending these classes are thankful to the Indian Army for opening the skill development centre in Gurez valley.

"This is a great opportunity for us and will benefit all of us. Skill development is very important in a world, where everything is digital. Most of us had completed our studies and didn't have a job and now by this we are able to spend our time with each other and learn a skill. We are not wasting our time anymore and also becoming independent. It's a great platform provided by the Indian Army which has played a great role for the people living in far flung areas. We are highly thankful to the Indian Army," said Saima, a student.

The bordering villages of North Kashmir have faced a lot of violence due to continuous ceasefire violations from across the border for decades. Hundreds of people were killed and injured during these violations. Many houses and properties were damaged too. The local women have suffered a lot due to the volatile situation. These people are living a normal life finally after the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan last year.

The area generally gets cut off after the first snowfall in April and people, especially women, have not much to do.

"I want to thank the Indian Army for opening this centre. It gave us a great opportunity, we were sitting at home and not doing anything. We are learning various skills and the main thing is that we were not doing anything in winters and now we have a skill and an institute to come and learn and earn from," said Roshni, a student.

The Indian Army has been working hard to open such kinds of initiatives for the women living in these bordering areas. Many such centres have been opened in various sectors close to the Line of Control.

WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. ''We are making these carpets for the New Indian Parliament. It's been months since we are working on these carpets and within a few days now, we will complete them. We are working day and night and most of the people in this village are working in the craft industry. The design is very different, and it was a little difficult to make but finally, we made it. People living close to the Line of Control in India's North Kashmir region had witnessed the most horrifying cross-border shelling and ceasefire violations. Hundreds of people have been killed in the last one decade and many injured and left handicapped. A lot of people in these regions lost their limbs in the shelling and ceasefire violations. It was only after the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan in February 2021 that these people started living a normal life. To help people living in these regions, the Indian Army has started a camp in remote areas of North Kashmir's Kupwara district to help people who require an artificial limb, wheelchair or a hearing aid. ''Indian Army in coordination with Spark Minda Foundation is organising a six-day artificial limb fitment camp in Kupwara. The camp is being conducted from August 22nd to 27th, with an aim to help those needy locals not having the financial means to get an artificial limb, wheelchair & hearing aid. Photo credits: Idrees Lone There are some victims of ceasefire violations as well who are being helped with proper medical care. Artificial limbs, wheelchairs, hearing aids, auxiliary crutches and hand sticks will be given to the needy during the camp. Till now, 82 patients have been given medical care and 300 more will be benefiting from this camp in the coming days," said Brigadier Vinod Singh Negi of the Indian Army. The locals living in remote villages of this areas are extremely grateful to the Indian Army for holding the camp for them. Many victims of the ceasefire violations are being helped in the camp. ''Bashir Ahmad had lost his leg years ago in ceasefire violation, and today he was given an artificial limb by the Indian Army. Another man Yousuf Khan, who lost his hearing during shelling in the area, has been given a hearing aid. Many people who were victims of the ceasefire violations were provided medical help by the Indian Army,'' said Habib Ullah, Sarpanch of Machhil. A huge number of people came to the camp from adjoining areas also and expressed gratitude to the army for extending a helping hand to the underprivileged and organising the camp at such a large scale. ''To educate the youth about the rich heritage of Jammu and Kashmir, we started the Bait Ul Meeras art and culture centre. Under the guidance of Nighat Shafi, chairman of Help Foundation, we were able to create a space for the people to work on their creative sides. We not only display the heritage artefacts here but also showcase artisans making Kashmiri craft products like carpets, shawls and pottery. The only motive for us coming here is to make children of the valley aware about the rich heritage we have had. Our kids hardly have any idea about the history of the valley, and to show them what we were and what we had is the main focus. From our costumes to our utensils to jewellery, we have put up everything,'' said Hakim Javid, Coordinator.

Bait Ul Meeras has also opened doors to the locals to donate or showcase their valuable collections of old artefacts. Some of the heritage ornaments and utensils have been donated by the people, especially young students. The staff keeps looking for artefacts from across the valley that can be put on display.

''We are inviting school students to come and visit the centre and we have had a great response. Some children have donated stuff towards the centre that belonged to their grandparents or had it in the family. And that shows how much these youngsters are interested in saving the history and preserving it for the next generation to see as well. We are also holding workshops for the children, from writing to painting to showing them how artisans work on Kashmir crafts.,'' said Hakim Javid, Coordinator.

The rare artefacts on display in the museum are centuries old and hold a great historical value. Students come for workshops over the weekend and storytelling sessions are held in the centre too. When the foundation had approached the owner of the property to open such a space in this heritage house, he had shown keen interest too.

In the border villages of North Kashmir's Kupwara district, close to the Line of Control, the Indian Army has started various initiatives to empower women in the area.

Dozens of women in the remote village of Dudi Macchil in the district, are being trained to make sanitary pads. The Indian Army and an NGO have set up a sanitary pad manufacturing unit there. These sanitary pads are fully biodegradable and are made on machines with simple technology which women can learn to operate very quickly.

''A comprehensive training was organised for women from the village who were trained in manufacturing pads as well as maintenance of the machines. Women actively took part in the training and started the production of sanitary pads successfully. These pads will be used by the schoolgirls from Government Higher Secondary School, Dudi and Army Goodwill School, Raghavan, '' said Brigadier Vinod Singh Negi, Indian Army, Maccchil.

The Indian Army and the NGO also installed sanitary pad vending machines and incinerators (a furnace for burning waste) in these schools. The women of the area will make a livelihood as per the daily production. This project will promote menstrual health awareness and hygiene in the region as well.

For the first time in 30 years, India's Kashmir is all set to get a multiplex.

The construction of the multiplex is viewed as a significant step toward providing Kashmir's youth with a source of entertainment, as the boom of guns and bombs had drowned out all sounds for more than 20 years.

Due to an increase in militancy, the valley's theatres had to be shut in 1990.

This comes three years after the special status of the state was abolished by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration.

Three auditoriums totaling 520 seats will be included in the multiplex.

Businessman Vikas Dhar from Srinagar has teamed up with multiplex behemoth INOX Leisure to offer moviegoers theatres with 2K resolution, 2K laser projectors, 7.1-channel sound systems, and recliners, among other improvements to the film experience.

"The youth in this area have no entertainment options. We thus considered opening a multiplex," said Dhar.

Early September is the target date for the multiplex's grand opening.

According to officials, overall violence in Kashmir has decreased. However, there are still casualties from regular gun battles and sporadic insurgent attacks.

For the first time ever, the Indian national flag has been made on a silk wall hanging by a Kashmiri artisan Maqbool Dar in North Kashmir’s Bandipora district. Maqbool’s motive for making the Indian National Flag on a silk wall hanging is to bring the attention of government authorities towards the dying art as well as the artisans.

Maqbool hails from Ashtengoo Village of Bandipora district and runs a carpet weaving unit with over 40 women working in the unit. The carpet industry of Kashmir Valley was hit badly due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And a year ago, Maqbool had the idea of making an Indian flag by weaving a silk carpet, it took him around three months to make this art piece.

“I thought about this a year ago and I want this carpet to be put up at Red Fort in New Delhi. I wish to put it up myself there. It will be visible to everyone from there and people will notice the Kashmir craft which would help us artisans. The main idea is to bring attention of the government towards the art and artisans. I also made tiranga because I really wanted to, every office including PM Modi and all top officials have an Indian flag in the office and that’s how I got the I made it, “said Maqbool Dar, artisan.

Maqbool has been weaving carpets for over 30 years, and not only is he running his household but also employees 40 women in his village in the carpet weaving unit he runs. Maqbool says if the government doesn’t come to the rescue of the artisans, the art would die soon.

“I always wanted to help the women folk, so that they can support themselves. Around 40 girls are working with us, and I hope the government supports us otherwise it’s very difficult for us to survive. The craft is dying and if we are not helped then we will lose this art and craft.” said Maqbool Dar.

Around half a million women are associated with the craft industry in the Kashmir Valley. And those women associated with the carpet industry say that if they are not supported by the government, the art will die and that would be the end of their employment as well.

“Around 30-40 girls are here in these units. We are extremely thankful to Maqbool for helping us by starting the unit. He gave us the right way. The only issue we face is the rates that we get. Maqbool has done so much for the women of this place and selflessly he is working for Benefit to the women of this place. “, said Shahzada Begum, Artisan.

Kashmir craft Industry is one of the largest employment generators in the Valley.

Kashmir: Two newly recruited terrorists surrender in Kulgam; Explosive device diffused by security forces

Many people say that Kashmir is the most beautiful place in the world. They say if there is heaven on Earth, it is in Kashmir. But its beauty sometimes attracts people from enemy countries towards Kashmir. They came here to rule the Kashmiri Aawam, but our security forces shattered their dreams and sent them to the place where they actually belong.

The issue of Kashmir has been around since the creation of Pakistan when Jinnah demanded a separate country for the Muslim majority people. At that time, the current Governor General, Lord Mountbatten, offered princely states either to merge with India or Pakistan or to remain independent. At that time, Raja Hari Singh was trying to negotiate with India and Pakistan to have an independent status for his state. Since the majority of the population of the state was Muslim, Pakistan thought Kashmir belonged to them.

On August 15, Raja Hari Singh offers to sign a Standstill Agreement with both countries for free movement of goods and people. Pakistan signed that agreement but India didn't. This made Pakistan impatient and they started violating the agreement.

The war was initially fought between the J & K Police and tribal militants of the North-Western province. As the pressure increases, Raja Harisingh demands help from India, but India can only send its troops after the state signs a formal Instrument of Accession. On October 26, the Maharaja signed the instrument of accession, which was later corrected in 1954.

In spite of its advantageous position, India accepted the UN resolution on ceasefire and agreed to Peblicite in Kashmir under 2 conditions:

1. Pakistan should withdraw its forces from the state of Jammu and Kashmir (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir).

2. The Srinagar administration's authority over the entire state should be restored.

The Kashmir Issue is Now a Political Agenda for Pakistan's Government.

In Pakistan, political parties use the Kashmir issue to gain support from their citizens. They make false promises to their citizens by collecting heavy taxes from them in the name of development and infrastructure and using this money to fund the terrorists in the liberation war in Kashmir. In reality, Pakistan fought 3 major wars with India in 1947-48, 1965, and 1971, respectively, and an armed conflict in Kargil (1999). After a brutal defeat, they try different methods in order to achieve their agenda.

Pakistan's Modus Operandi shifted gears from conventional to non-conventional warfare. They use different techniques to cause chaos in India's North West province, like radicalisation of people, converting Sangbaaz into militants, hiring of hybrid terrorists, etc.

Some of the most famous start-ups of terrorists founded and funded by Pakistan are:

1. Jihad-e-Mohammed

2. Lashkar-e-Taiba

3. Hasqani Network, and so on.

These organisations use radical ideologies to convert young Kashmiri youth into militants, starting with stone pelting (Sangbaaz) against India's security forces. By targeting local poor families and their youth, they hope to instil resistance in security forces operations and administrative work in Kashmir.

India's counter, current situation, and future aspects

After the curious case of Burhan Wani, India's security forces and government worked on a multi-pron approach to deal with terrorist activities in Kashmir. Their primary targets are to stop illegal foreign funding from enemy countries, run awareness programmes in Kashmir and Like Operation Maa, under which they convert Sangbaaz into a normal youth with the help of their mother, so that they can come back to their families without being killed and live a new normal life. Operation All-out was also launched by our security forces in 2017 until there was complete peace in the state.

The major change came in Kashmir when Article 370 was removed in 2019. Experts believe that this will bring a major change in the development of Jammu and Kashmir and also give a massive punch in the jaw of the Pakistani government and their terrorist organisations. Many schools, colleges, research centres, malls, and hospitals are soon to be constructed in Kashmir. This will bring a massive change in the lives of Kashmiris. In his recent interview, Army General KJS Dillon Sir said that Kashmir is now changing. People have now changed their agenda from free Kashmir to infrastructure development. After all, they also want good education, better healthcare facilities, and good jobs in their areas. Their faith in India's security forces also increases now with their support. Terrorist activities in Kashmir decreased abruptly, and hopefully, in the coming future, Kashmir will become a terrorist-free state or might be the next startup hub like Bengaluru. We never know.
