Kashmir has more than 3700 hectares of land under the cultivation of saffron. The Pampore area in Pulwama is the main hub for growing saffron. However, the spice is now being cultivated across different districts of Kashmir valley as well.

"As compared to last year, the production this year is twice of what it was the previous year. Adequate rain at the proper time helped and that's why we had the best production. This is much better than the previous year. The GI tag is good for us, and will benefit us. It makes sure the purest Kashmiri saffron is sold in the market,'' said Farhad, a saffron farmer.

The tourists visiting the valley are stopping at the saffron farms to see how it is grown. A lot of tourists are buying saffron from the farms as well.

''With the grace of God, the crop is much better this year than what we had hoped for. We have been harvesting for days and you can see this farm was harvested yesterday and today. There is so much to be picked as well. This whole place is dependent on saffron as we grow most of the saffron from the Kashmir region," said Nasir Hamid, another saffron farmer.

"GI tagging is beneficial for us, but we have seen a lot of non-Kashmiri products being sold across India on Kashmir name and that needs to be stopped. Although GI tagging has not reached ground level farmers. The tourists visit our farms, and they see with their own eyes how we grow saffron. This also makes sure they believe the authenticity of the saffron from here. The world's best saffron is grown in the Kashmir valley and demand for it has been good," he added.

The tourists are appreciative of the farmers growing saffron in the valley. It is a unique experience for them to see the saffron farms.

''It is a unique experience, we come from Pune and don't get to see all this. Saffron is expensive and seeing its farming was a great experience. Kashmiri saffron is the best and is known all over the world. It provides great fragrance and taste to dishes," said Vikrant, a tourist.

Saffron is used on numerous occasions in India. The use of saffron in puja and making sweets for festivals is considered auspicious.

''We have come to see saffron farming as we use it in so many things, while making sweets, and during Puja. It is considered very auspicious. I am seeing the saffron flower for the first time. All sweets like shrikhand are made with it," said Preeti, another tourist.

The saffron farmers have been demanding that the rates of saffron should be revised. With everything becoming expensive in the market and the process involved in growing and processing the saffron becoming costlier as well, the saffron farmers say the rates need to be increased for them to sustain.

With improvement in the security situation in the Kashmir Valley, the Indian Navy has revived the Naval training for National Cadets Corps (NCC) after a gap of 33 years. Over 100 cadets of the NCC attended the training on the Manasbal Lake in central Kashmir's Ganderbal district.

The first training activity has been organised for 100 senior NCC cadets, boys and girls, from all districts of the Union territory. The camp will be running till September 26 and prepare the cadets for the forthcoming national level NCC camp at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh commencing on October 2.

''I think it's a momentous occasion that after a gap of 33 years, the NCC cadets of Kashmir region are fortunate to be part of this camp which has started, and will help them train in the naval training activities very close to their homes. Before this, they had to go to Jammu. In the late 1980s, security situation turned grim and we had to shift our training areas. Now with restarting of this exercise at Manasbal, I am sure the NCC training in the valley will get a great fillip,'' said Brigadier K S Kalsi, group commander, NCC cadets.

"The Naval training camps have a number of activities, but this one is specially preparing cadets of J&K and Ladakh for the upcoming national level NCC camp at Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh commencing on October 2. These cadets are being trained in boat pulling, sailing, ship modelling and signalling. All of them are very important naval training activities. I have no doubt that all the youth who are going to see these events upfront, or through the media in Kashmir will get motivated,'' added Brigadier Kalsi.

Kashmir is gifted with numerous water bodies and with Manasbal training facility, the NCC cadets of Kashmir will not require to travel to Jammu for training and this will be a big motivation for students to volunteer for NCC. The cadets were extremely happy that the camp is being organised in the valley after decades.

''This training camp has been organised in the valley after a long time, a lot of children from various colleges have come from various parts of the Union territory. I would want other children to come and be a part of these camps. We are being trained in boat pulling, swimming, sailing, and drills. The Navy officers motivate us to join the Indian Navy,'' said Ovais Rashid, a cadet.

The current security situation in the valley due to the target killings is impacting the Mela Kheer Bhawani annual celebration. Although all the preparations for the annual festival have been done by the government, the mood at the temple is sombre and not much activity is seen in the premises.

The Kashmiri Pandit community in various parts of South Kashmir have decided to boycott the festival. They have sent out letters to the authorities that they will boycott the annual Kheer Bhawani Yatra on the pretext that they are being attacked and they don't feel safe to attend the annual celebrations.

''We will not participate in the Mata Kheer Bhawani annual celebrations, The sacrifice that our brothers and sisters have given and the atmosphere we are living in, the whole community is disturbed, and we are in mourning and we condemn these killings and have decided not to go,'' said Rekha Pandita.

The Kashmiri Pandit community has asked authorities not to make transport arrangements for them as they would not attend till their demands are fulfilled.

''If I have security issues going to work, how can I go to Mata Kheer Bhawani? We have decided that none of us will attend, and we have told them (Government) that they should not send the buses for us. It's just two days left for the annual festival and generally the temple would be visited by thousands of devotees but the mood at the temple is very sombre and not many people could be seen around the temple premises. The people visiting say ''There is no doubt that due to the current situation, the numbers have come down of the devotees visiting the temple. Every year people used to come two days before the festival and Puja's would be held, there used to be a rush all around. But due to the recent killings, the Yatris have decided to cancel. All security measures have been taken too'' said VeerJi Raina, a Kashmiri Pandit.

Some of the devotees are extremely sad to see such low turnout of devotees at the temple. ``We had booked but we also were in doubt whether we should come or not, but we did. But after coming here our hearts are sad, our heart is crying, there used to be so much rush these days and right now it is completely empty. The recent killings have affected the arrival of devotees. '' said Anjali, a Kashmiri Pandit.

In India, the political parties in the Kashmir Valley have blamed the central government for the current security situation in the Valley. Two former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, today visited the family of Kashmir actress Ambreen Bhat, who was killed by terrorists outside her house.

The political party leaders have said that the claim of normalcy in Kashmir Valley is far from reality. "Those who claim that the situation in the valley is normal need to be questioned. We have been saying for a long time that this situation is not normal. And those areas which were cleared of Militancy during our time, the militancy has propped up again. Areas around Srinagar as well as the whole of Srinagar had hardly any militant attacks," said Omar Abdullah.

Omar also said that the cycle of target killings is not stopping, and something needs to be done by the government to stop this.

PDP President Mehbooba Mufti also visited Ambreen's house and met with the family members. Mehbooba also blamed the central government for its "muscular policy" on Jammu and Kashmir.

"The central government is not taking note of the situation and its muscular policy is worsening the situation on the ground. The central government is claiming that everything is alright in Jammu and Kashmir, which is far from the truth. Innocent People are being killed on a daily basis here. Unfortunately, central government and BJP are seeing J&K through the prism of security and Muslim majority state," said Mehbooba Mufti.

Jammu and Kashmir police earlier said that they killed both the terrorists involved in the killing of actress Ambreen Bhat.

Three terror attacks in 24 hours in Kashmir Valley: 1 CRPF jawan dies, four non-locals injured

Kashmir Valley has always set exemplary examples of brotherhood between the communities.

After 75 years of taking care of the property belonging to the Hindu community, Muslims returned the land for the construction of Mata Sharda temple in Teetwal belt close to the Line of Control(LoC).

The temple is located in north Kashmir's Kupwara district and will be built to revive the centuries-old pilgrimage to Sharda Peeth in the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir(PoK). The plan for the temple has been approved by the Sringeri south matth. The temple would be made with artwork granite stones and is being carved in Karnataka.

''Mata Sharda is the goddess of knowledge and wisdom. The importance of Sharda Peeth is well known to everyone. It used to be the oldest university much older than Nalanda and Taxila. And the oldest civilization. None of the Hindus have been allowed to go to Sharda Peeth and now we have been trying our best, my committee called Save Sharda Committee (SSC) to get it revived and re-open it," Ravindra Pandita, head of Save Sharda Committee, said.

"We have a lot of researchers from PoK and here as well working on it. It's a shared heritage, the traditional routes are from places like Keran. Teetwal is the official route for the Sharda pilgrimage. We are constructing a base temple. We are quite hopeful that the LoC permit which exists between two countries, is revived so that we can travel and take the pilgrimage. The Jammu and Kashmir Hindus should be allowed to take this pilgrimage,'' Ravindra Pandita added.

The Hindu community in Kashmir wants the pilgrimage to open on the same pattern as Kartarpur. They want the PoK government to allow them to take this pilgrimage. It is the most important temple for the Kashmiri Pandit community.

''This is basically a base camp for the Sharda temple. The yatra would start from here. The pilgrimage would be taken to PoK. It's the most important temple for Kashmiri Pandits. It's what Mecca is to Muslims; Sharda is for Kashmiri Pandits. This base camp had a Gurudwara before 1947. The people called us and said this is the land that belongs to the temple and welcomed us with open arms. We have started the work,'' said Surinder Mirza a Kashmiri Pandit.

The Muslims handed over the land to the temple committee recently. And have also appealed to both India and Pakistan governments to make open the pilgrimage again so that the Kashmiri Pandit community can visit the temple in PoK.

''It was our duty, our ancestors have always told us that this land belonged to the temple, and they had told us whenever they come and want this land back, we should return it. We are hopeful that routes will be open. We want the old times to return,'' said a local Zameer Ahmad.

The temple construction committee has also kept Muslim members in the team. The temple is being built by a Kashmiri Muslim who says that this is the biggest example of brotherhood in Kashmir. He hopes that it becomes a meeting point for all the communities and an example of peace.

''It's a very old heritage and we had kept the land very safe with us. To strengthen the bond between the communities, we are making a temple, a Gurdwara already exists and we will build a Mosque too. This should be a centre for everyone to meet. We request the governments to allow this pilgrimage. We need the government from across to give us permits. People should remember that Ajaz was a Muslim who made temples, Mosques and Gurudwara,'' Ajaz Khan, member, temple construction committee, said.

The holy mace would be taken from Sharda Peeth temple to Chilhana village in PoK. The base camp would be a traditional route of the yatra.

Jammu and Kashmir has become a hub of drugs. A recent study has revealed that Jammu Kashmir has 600,000 people involved in drug-related issues which are approximately 4.6 per cent of the population of the Union Territory.

90 per cent of these drug users are in the age group of 17-33 years.

A meeting was called by the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir where the state-level committee of the narco coordination centre outlined a project for tackling the drug menace in the Union Territory.

In recent years, the number of drug abusers has increased by many folds in the UT. There is a change in the pattern of drugs used as well.

Illicit drugs like heroin, cocaine, and brown sugar are available in the drug market. 90 percent of the patients enrolling in drug de-addiction centres are using heroin.

''The number is increasing, as per our OPD's we see around 40-50 patients every day and the kind of addiction we are seeing is very dangerous. Most of them are using illicit drugs like heroin and brown sugar and that too via injections. It's very dangerous because they get infections like hepatitis c and hepatitis b and also HIV,'' said Dr Yasir Rather, Professor, Incharge drug de-addiction center, SMHS, GMC Srinagar.

In fact what we saw in our study is that there is an epidemic within an epidemic. It's become very common in these patients. And It leads to chronic liver diseases resulting in death. From last one decade the numbers are increasing and also the pattern has changed. What we are seeing is illicit drugs are being used commonly like heroin and brown sugar. Around 90 percent of our opd cases are using heroin. There are multiple factors related. '' he added.

The Psychiatric Hospital in Srinagar did a survey in two districts of Kashmir Valley. What they found was shocking and alarming. In Srinagar and Anantnag districts only, 18000 people were using illicit drugs which amounted to 3.5 crore rupees every day.

''We did a survey in two districts Srinagar and Anantnag, In that survey, we saw how much is the economic burden of addiction. We found 18000 people using these illicit drugs that are heroin and in that we found 3.5 crores rupees were spent on procuring these drugs on a daily basis. '' said Dr Yasir Rather, Professor, Incharge drug de addiction center, SMHS, GMC Srinagar.

The drug addicts who are being treated at the Government De-Addiction centre in Srinagar say that drugs are easily available across the Kashmir Valley. Once they get addicted to these substances, they go to any extent to get them. One such story is of Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, A labourer by profession, Showkat was about to sell his baby as he was falling short of money to get drugs. He even took the advance payment to sell his own baby for money so that he could get drugs.

'''It used to be cheaper earlier, but now it's become expensive. Every household has one addict and I have been on drugs for three years. I used to work as a labourer. And I used to spend all my money on drugs. During that period only my wife was pregnant. And when she delivered the baby in the hospital, I tried selling my own child to make money to get drugs,'' said former drug abuser Showkat Ahmad Sheikh.

I was in the hospital and some ladies asked me if I could find them a couple to give them a child and hearing this I decided to sell my own baby. They had offered me ten lac rupees and I had said yes. I even took 20 thousand rupees from them. I spent 15 thousand for 3 gms of substance. They later paid me 60 thousand rupees. Later I realised what I was about to do. I was thinking of stealing my own baby. I am begging people who are involved in the drugs to stay away, '' he added.

The biggest problem is the easy availability of these illicit drugs across the UT. The drug abusers say that From cocaine to heroin to brown sugar, everything is available over a phone call. This menace has also led to an increase in crime rate in some areas.

According to former drug abuser Mohammad Umar, ''I started with cigarettes and due to unemployment I started getting involved in various drugs. I wouldnt like to reveal everything but I was addicted to F10 and F11. Drugs are available everywhere, you should just have the money. There is a chain which starts in South Kashmir's Sangam area, the government needs to take action on them. Most of the drugs are charas, cocaine, brown sugar and Heroin. Srinagar gets all its supplies from these areas.''

''I would want the Police to intervene and put the drug dealers behind the bar. We need to stop it from the very first level of the chain. I have been coming to this rehab centre for more than a year and I am thankful to Dr Yasir who has helped me a lot to deal with the addiction. Now I am etally and physically fit. I would appeal to all boys and girls to stay away from drugs. I was working and spending all the money, used to ask my parents for money then I decided either I have to steal or leave this menace. I managed to give up on drugs. Unemployment is one of the major reasons for getting into these things, '' he added.

The Jammu and Kashmir police have recovered Illicit drugs from various parts of the Union Territory worth crores of rupees. The Police also say that most of the drugs supplied come from across the border of Pakistan.

Many such consignments were recovered mostly in areas close to the Line of Control, like Kupwara and Uri. Also, a lot of these drug consignments were dropped via drones from across the International borders in different parts of Jammu.

"We test the samples that we get here. There are 8 parameters we test these samples on, which are internationally recognized. Our lab is recognised across the world. The 8 parameters include moisture, extraneous matter and foreign matter, and total ash and three main characteristics. We grade them and then we do an e-auction. The farmers get the flowers and then we do the stigma separation and then we do the vacuum drying. Traditionally, farmers used to dry the saffron under shade at home, but due to that, the saffron used to lose its main components. We save all the parameters which help us to get the best grade. Our saffron is better than Spain and Iranian saffron. " said Dr Majid Ali, Deputy Technical Manager.

The saffron flowers are sent to this laboratory where scientists with all new technology process them and can retain the finest quality. With this quality assurance and GI Tagging, the government can sell the products on all national and international platforms.

"Anytime a laboratory or institution checks the quality of a product, they have to survey the establishment. There are many procedures that ensure the quality and quantity of the product. There are many schemes and standard operating procedures.

If we want to get these products recognised on international platforms, we have to follow these steps. It's not a cumbersome process, but it's a process that ensures the quality, quantity, and income of the farmers. SOP is made for people to benefit the people, so in that way, there are many processes and camps where we are aware of the farmers, "said Baseer Ul Chaudhary, DC Pulwama.

With this step, the farmers and retailers of the Kashmir valley are extremely happy. They say it will benefit the farmers directly and they can sell the product despite lockdowns.

"It's very good for us. The farmers were not satisfied with the money they would get for their produce. If there is a good price for it, it will help. Due to COVID-19, there were problems. Now if we could sell it online, it would be a lot more beneficial. We have been personally selling it online and if the government also did the same, it would help, "said Wahid Bhat, a farmer and retailer.

Tourists coming to the Kashmir valley always buy saffron on their visit. But with initiative now, they can buy the best quality saffron online. They say it will be very helpful.

"Since childhood, we have heard about it and we get it every year. It's very good quality. If it's as good quality as we get from Kashmir, then it's very helpful. Then you don't need to wait long to get the best quality. It is good for the farmers also, as due to COVID-19, tourism has come to a halt. The farmers will not have to suffer from it. The product will not have to suffer. "said Nidhi Aggarwal, a tourist.

These new initiatives by the government of India will benefit the farmers as well as the retailers in the Kashmir valley.

''The idea was already in my mind a few years before but it came to fruition a few months back because I wanted people to ride horses. There are people who wanted to learn but didn't have enough money to buy a horse or keep one. So in order to teach them I started this school. The response has been surprising. We get 5-6 admissions everyday. We have 12 horses, eight for riding and two trainers and two helpers,'' said Ali Abbas, owner of Fazlullah farms.

Kashmir is a mountainous region and horse riding is not new. However, no one has ever taken this sport professionally. The Valley hasn't produced a good horse rider who can represent the UT or the country in competitions held across the world. But with the opening of this school, there are many who want to take this professionally.
