In a significant ruling, the Karnataka High Court has quashed an FIR against three muslim accused of preaching Islam inside a Hindu temple on the grounds that sharing religious beliefs doesn't amount to conversion. The case emerged from Jamkhandi in Bagalkot district, where three Muslim men were preaching Islam and distributing religious pamphlets and leaflets, allegedly making statements about Islam in the vicinity of a temple premise. Soon after, a resident filed a complaint, accusing them of attempting conversion, with giving promises of jobs and derogatory remarks against Hinduism. The court found no merit in the FIR. In its order, the bench observed that the cases of these three particular Muslim men do not provide any concrete evidence of coercion or force. It is mere preaching and distribution of literature; it does not constitute an offence under the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, 2022. Unless there is evidence of force, fraud or inducement with the purpose of converting someone. Additionally, the High Court noticed that the complainant was neither the victim nor any relative of the victim, thus making the complaint legally unsustainable. Under section 4 of the act, only the aggrieved person or their relatives' complaints are eligible for legal implications. “The essence of a free society lies in the freedom to express, discuss, and propagate beliefs,” the court observed, adding that without coercion or allurement, the act of preaching cannot be criminalised.
Why is it Important ?
With the growing instances of islamophobia across India and the major crackdown on the freedom of religious preaching and practices of minorities especially Muslims in public places, the verdict comes as a major relief as it intends to maintain the delicate balance between religious freedom and anti-conversion laws in India. On one hand states like Karnataka have introduced stricter anti-conversion regulations, on the other hand courts continue to emphasise that propagation of faith is a fundamental right, protected under Article 25 of the Indian Constitution.

In a bold decision Karnataka High Court quashed an FIR against three muslim men who were reportedly preaching Islam in the premises of a Hindu Temple because the case did not find any evidence of coercion.

Preaching Islam in temple isn’t conversion:Bold verdict by Karnataka High Court

The Supreme Court of India on Thursday severely criticised the Karnataka High Court for its handling of the Renukaswamy murder case in which actor and prime accused Darshan Thoogudeepa was granted bail, and called it a “perverse exercise of judicial power”. The top court further vented its anger saying that a trial court judge could make such a mistake but it is not expected from a high court judge. It further questioned whether it is a common practice in the Karnataka High Court that bail orders are more like judgments of acquittal. The top court was hearing Karnataka government’s plea seeking cancellation of the bail granted to Darshan.

Actor Darshan is the prime accused in the case of kidnapping, torturing, and killing of 33-year-old Renukaswamy in June last year.
‘It is, prima facie, a perverse exercise of judicial power’
A bench of Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan said on Thursday that they would not make the same mistake as the High Court. “We will not give any judgment for conviction or acquittal. We are a little serious because it is a case of murder and conspiracy,” the bench told counsel for actor Pavithra Gowda, the primary accused, while expressing its strong displeasure.“Don’t you think the High Court declared an order of acquittal,” the Supreme Court asked, upset over the language used by the High Court in its December 2024 bail order.“The manner in which the High Court dictated the order... very sorry to say. Does the High Court dictate the same kind of order in other cases too,” Justice Pardiwala asked“What is troubling is the reasoning given... especially saying ‘grounds of arrest were not furnished’ for a murder case.”“It is, prima facie, a perverse exercise of judicial power,” the apex court said.“A trial court judge making such a mistake is acceptable... but a high court judge!”
SC questions state on why trial would be held on daily basis
The Supreme Court also posed questions to the state on being told that the trial would be held on a daily basis. Justice Pardiwala asked why this case merited so much attention when other accused had been waiting their chance for years. The top court was later informed the trial would be completed in six months. Actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and 13 others are in prison charged with the murder of Renukaswamy, who was allegedly kidnapped, tortured, and murdered by the actor’s accomplices after he apparently sent obscene messages to Pavithra Gowda, a friend of Darshan. The police believe Darshan paid Rs 50 lakh to four men involved in the planning and execution of the gruesome crime. In April, there was public fury after the actor, told to attend every court hearing as part of his bail conditions, skipped appearance citing back pain and hours later was at a movie screening. There was another row earlier when photos from inside the jail showed Darshan and other accused lounging and smoking in lawn chairs in a garden. The actor was then transferred to another facility.

It was the second time in a week that the Supreme Court has rebuked the Karnataka High Court in the Renukaswamy murder case. Last week, the High Court was told that it had failed to exercise discretion in granting bail to actor and prime accused Darshan Thoogudeepa.

A team of more than 20 researchers has unearthed various artefacts and other tools believed to be around 4000 years old during an excavation near Mallikarjuna Hill and the Anjaneya Swamy Temple in Maski town, Raichur district of Karnataka. The region once again came to the limelight, which is already known for the discovery of a famous Ashokan inscription. The archaeologists from the United States of America, Canada, and India who are currently researching in Maski have traced human activity in the area back 4000 years, uncovering signs of an early and flourishing civilisation. Findings of archaeologists indicate that a human settlement once existed here between the 11th and 14th centuries BCE, according to a report in Deccan Herald. They also hinted about a developed community with evolving cultural practices based on discovered artefacts such as clay pots, artistic pieces, tools, and cooking utensils. The excavation process is being monitored and led by Professor Dr. Andrew M. Bauer from Stanford University (USA), Dr. Peter G. Johansen from McGill University (Canada), and scholars from Shiv Nadar University (India).
What else was unearthed from the site?
They have been working in Maski town of Karnataka for the past three months and also conducting intensive fieldwork following permission from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Researchers had also spotted 271 potential sites of interest before the excavation and work around Mallikarjuna Hill and the nearby temple, which has confirmed human settlement for a long time.Multiple cooking artefacts, such as earthen pots and pans, were unearthed by the researchers. One of the lead researchers, identified as Kadambi, has confirmed that these artefacts provide clear and strong evidence of prolonged human presence in Maski around 4000 years ago. “We have found evidence that indicates that there was a human settlement in Maski around 4,000 years ago,” Kadambi confirmed.

The Karnataka government has blamed the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise RCB for the Bengaluru stampede in which 11 people lost their lives. In a status report submitted to the High Court, the Congress-led government said the IPL franchise "unilaterally" posted messages on social media calling cricket fans to join the celebratory event of its maiden IPL victory. RCB, the report said, announced that entry was free in the Chinnaswamy Stadium, resulting in the swelling of the crowd to unmanageable numbers outside the gates of the iconic cricket ground. It also pointed out that RCB also posted a video by Indian cricket star Virat Kohli to draw the fans to its festivities. "On 04.06.2025, the RCB, unilaterally and without consultation/ permission from the Bangalore City Police, posted a photo at 7: 01 a.m on the official RCB handle on social media (Instagram, Facebook, "X") informing that there is free entry for people and inviting the public to participate in the Victory Parade, which would commence at Vidhana Soudha and conclude at Chinnaswamy Stadium. Female candidates were asked to remove their mangalsutras before entering the examination hall during the Karnataka Civil Service Examination. On Sunday, the Karnataka Public Service Commission allegedly asked the examinees to remove their ornaments, including earrings, chains, and toe rings, reported India Today. Female examinees were asked to remove their mangalsutras, a holy necklace worn by Hindu women to signify that they were married. Security guards at the Government Girls' Pre-Graduation College Examination Centre, located next to the City Police Commissioner's office, allowed married women to enter the exam centre only after they removed their mangalsutras, anklets and toe rings, local media outlets reported. However, this wasn't the case at the other centres. "In Hindu culture, there's no requirement to remove the mangalsutra. We'll remove it when we have to. I removed my mangalsutra and toe ring and went in. Just like how they checked for hijab and allowed them, they should have also checked us and allowed us inside," she said. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reacted to the irregularities in the KEA examination conducted in Kalaburagi, ANI reported. He has asked the authorities to investigate the incident. A candidate who appeared for a recruitment exam conducted by the Karnataka Examination Authority was caught cheating in the competitive exam at the Sharanabasaveshwara University examination centre in Kalaburagi. Authorities arrested the accused, Trimurthy, his brother Ambarish, and three others. Examination supervisor Shilpa Channaveer Chikki has lodged an FIR against Trimurthy, Ambarish, RD Patil (kingpin in PSI recruitment scam), and three others at Ashok Nagar police station. Trimurthy is a resident of Sonna village of Afzalpur. He was wearing a Bluetooth device, and his brother, sitting in a car outside the examination centre was sending him answers via the device. RD Patil was also helping them send the answers. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE
